[Q] Incredible 5-point Multitouch? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With the "amazing" touch screen sensor in the HTC Incredible. We should be able to support more than two touch-points. The HTC EVO has the same touch sensor as our incredible and there are custom kernels available that enable 5-point multitouch. (ie netarchy-toastmod)
Does anyone know if any attempt has been made to enable this for the Incredible? Searching results in basically nothing but EVO threads.
A quick note, on the netarchy-toastmod thread, it says that some EVOs have different touch sensors. Thus some only support up to 3-point multitouch. I checked my VendorID on my Incredible and it does contain the version that should support 5-point multitouch (ATMEL_x0080_x0016).
Also, everyone will ask what is the point of more that 2 touch points. I admit the usefulness is limited, but it would be nice for emulators. And also, why not?

Great question, I asked about this a while back but didn't really go anywhere. It would be great to have more than 2 point touch on the Incredible, definitely when it comes to Gameboid. Strange that HTC didn't implement this in the Incredible.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700885&highlight=Multitouch

Not strange at all and a reason why it never went anywhere. I thought it was strange myself why people ask for features that I see no point of having? I see no functional purpose of having more than 2 points, but maybe thats just me.

Its a nice thing to brag about

Some of us have 5 or more thumbs.. So great idea.

My fascinate has 5 points of touch.. allow me to explain how much I use that, only when using app that actually test multi touch, that's all I can remember.

To those that said you don't need 5 points or more, that will work for you since you guys probably don't use any Gameboy advance, PSX emulator on your phone. If you do, then you will realize how important this feature is, so please don't assume this is some kind of worthless feature.

man with 3 points is enough for the emulators, but 5 it awesome, anyway...is it gonna be possible sometime?

Yup, heck I'll settle for 3 points. It's almost impossible to play Metroid on Gameboid with only 2 points right now.

I wish people would stop to think before posting about a feature they won't use. There are thousands (millions?) of other users with vastly different needs than you. Don't presume your way of using the phone is the same way for everyone else. If you aren't interested in a feature, don't respond to the thread.
Anyway, I'd like to see this resolved for the Incredible. Emulators sorely need at least 3 inputs for full functionality.

I posted a kernel patch for up to 10-point here. Hopefully it'll make it into some kernels.

Could Someone Explain Why You Would Need More Than 3 Points?

Have you checked out:

Lou's latest Kernal utilizing the kernal patch listed earlier. I was abel to get all 10 fingers to register (not that it would do any good).
As for why would you want more than 2 point touch:
Quoted from Lou in his Kernal thread:
"This new kernel will help detect multiple touches on the touchscreen simultaneously so in essence it will help with accuracy."

Doesn't work on Desire Z based roms.

Again, you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Not to denigrate Tiad's contributions, but you should instead be giving credit to VirusCrazy and BZO instead. I also agree with the previous posters who feel this thread is useless. As anyone who has been following camera progress knows, the latest info on camera dev work can be found in the [DEV - Camera (Diamond, Blackstone, Raphael, Rhodium) ] Camera tests thread.

that's true, but you forget that some of the phones are amazing, like the touch pro 2, atm. in my eyes this is an beautifull phone, an big keyboard, 2 camera's, big touch screen (to bad its no multi touch, ah well) the htc 7 pro is also cool yeah but think about how much this phone will cost, the price of that phone will be an normal buying price (im talking about the device without an subscription) in about 2 years, and then there will be another new phone everyone wants. You can say that upgrade is probably the best option, but is it financial the best way?
In my opinion the best way for these htc phones is for some people maybe learning the development process. Being able to fix your own bugs on the android port, that way it will be easier to port android (or other new mobile operating systems even tough they wont have the same builds, you will have some basic knowledge so it will be easier) to new phones faster because more and more people have the knowledge of it.
But this is just my opinion
I recently bought an touch pro 2 and im dying to get an good android port on it.
2 weeks ago i started learning the process of how android actualy works
atm. i dont understand allot but i sure do understand allot,
And if everyone stops developing for the htc touch pro 2, i will continue learning it (i am seeing myself being 50 and finnaly having an properly ported android on this phone lol.)

I'll double check the thread, but I don't believe it specifies folders that need to be used. Everything else worked. And the fxcamera didn't crash. It simply didn't show any image on the screen. [Q] Best Incredible rom (stability is key)

A friend has had the Incredible since release. I have the EVO (also since release) and I rooted mine the day I got it. Since that time I've been attempting to convince my buddy to root his phone. I've almost got him to agree to do it (actually, I'll be doing it for him) so I've been doing a bit of research on the Incredible. I got the root method down http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-incredible-hacks/102748-how-root-stock-2-2-using-unrevoked-3-3-a.html if anyone has a different suggestion, please let me know.
I've also looked through the roms available and there is a very good selection but I think that SkyRaider Sense 3.5 probably looks like the best option for him. I know the suggestion of "try a few and see what you like" but the problem with that is that he just wants something that works and he doesn't have to mess with. His biggest complaint is battery life and I'm sure, just as with my EVO, that any rom would be an improvement over stock in that respect.
What I'm looking for is the closest to the stock experience with a focus on stability. For anyone familiar with the EVO roms, I've been primarily using Fresh (although, currently running CM7 )since I got my phone and I'd like to find something along the same lines.
I know this was long, I hate reading long posts, but thank you in advance to whomever could give a bit of advice.
P.S. He was all excited with the iPhone announcement and I'm doing my best to show him the benefits of Android over iOS.
Edit: I also noticed that there is a leaked kernel running around. I noticed that the most recent OTA was in November and I was thinking that there might be another fairly soon. Considering that he doesn't want to have to mess with things and update things, I was thinking that it might be better to wait till after the roms get updated to the next OTA before flashing one for him. Does anyone have any information on if and when a new OTA for the Incredible might be released?
In my opinion, you're right. SkyRaider Sense 3.5 would be great, that's what I'm running and it is unbelievably stable.

Thanks for the reply. 2 questions: 1) how's the battery life? 2) I noticed in the screen shots that the 3G Mobile Hotspot app was still in there. Did he mod it to work without any extra fees? Is there a benefit to using it over using Wireless Tether (which is what I use on my EVO)? I noticed that as late as v3.3 he included Wireless Tether.

This is pretty good too. It gets pretty good battery life (although I am on an extended battery so your results may vary)
The main draw there is all the optimizations on it, the thing is fast.
It's also been very stable for me.
I haven't really liked the built in 3g hotspot, Wireless Tether has been faster and more reliable for me
Battery life is very good, and it actually doesn't include mobile hotspot. He includes WiFi tether, but it has the mobile hotspot icon.

Thanks. I know someone on the EVO section cracked the Sprint hotspot app so I wasn't sure if it was the same deal. Personally, I think wireless tether is better anyway.
Yeah, there's a work around for the Verizon Mobile Hotspot. However, wifi tether works great and I'd rather just avoid verizon all together.
It always starts out peaceful enough....
@ OP: The reason we close what's referred to as "Best ROM Threads" is because the vast majority of the type end up a nasty flame fest. The reasons should be obvious. It's really a matter of opinion, and then you get the fanboys of certain devs chiming in, and well, you get it. You did nothing wrong. My advice is to read, try a few, then make that decision for yourself. It's easy to find the most popular ATM, because they stay on page 1 of the dev sub. That doesn't necessarily make it the best, however. Give some a shot and see what's best for you. Enjoy the forums.
@ OPX2: Got your PM. I'll reopen and give it a chance. Let this serve as a warning as to the future of this thread.

I actually really do like that, very nicely done. Still has that stock feel but just tastefully modified. First thing I noticed was the Gingerbread feel to the status bar and then I read the OP and saw that's what you were going for. I'm currently using CM7 on my EVO and one of the things I really like about it are the green accents.
Question though: I know the power control widgets in the notification tray can be modified, would it still keep the same theme if I were to change them up? (something like the orientation button, I think a flashlight or bluetooth button might be more useful in that spot)

yeah, I definitely might be leaning more toward that. 2 questions though:
1) Do you know if the 2.6.32.17 kernel is the latest official? I was looking at the list of kernels and it was dated from October. I know there was an Incredible OTA in November, just wondering if you knew if that was the same kernel in that OTA. Just wondering in case I want to revert to stock from the modified version that's included with the ROM.
2) I noticed in the screen shots there was a notification bar power and control widget with a planet for it's icon, is that mobile data? From left to right they are WiFi, Bluetooth, I believe mobile data, GPS, screen brightness, and sound control.
Not sure about the first one but the second is correct

The reason behind me not releasing a GSM version of anything...
I dont own a GSM tablet. I dont have the funds to buy a GSM tablet, and I own CDMA tablets.
Plus, lets be honest here, there are enough GSM dev's out there to choke a horse, to stab each other in the back and steal stuff, lie , and generally BS others.
But, it comes down to me not having a GSM tablet.

Paranoid Android for our GS3(Will it be ported)

I was watching a review today of Paranoid Android for the i9300 & it looked amazing! I've been enjoying the new TW ui, much to my surprise, so I've been taking advantage of its many new features, but tablet mode was looking so great on the 4.8 inch screen! I've only ever really tested it much on my old Sensation, but the smaller screen with the lesser resolution made it seem not so ideal. I really think it could take advantage of the beautiful bigger screen of the T999! It's so unique and it would give us a whole new way to use our phone. Does anyone know how to port this to our phone? Maybe someone here is friendly with the Paranoid Roms development team? Any ideas or insight?
PS: I've tried playing around with the dpi without much success . I couldn't seem to get the phone to behave as a tablet like with some other devices, and it didn't seem to be very stable after modifying it...
Hello, I too have a sensation and have just ordered the s3. It it a big improvement over the sensation?

Oh God yes, lol! I was using the Sensation quite a bit before the gs3 was released because there's a lot of development & it can be a fun device to play with, but it's not worth comparing to the gs3. I'll probably always keep my sensation because I don't like to get rid of any of my phones, and I'm kind of a phone junkie, but it's been on loan to a friend for a few weeks now. The Gs3 will be a huge upgrade if the Sensation is the only phone you've been using.
It probably will get ported I also can't wait I used it on my galaxy nexus and love the Rom, the tablet ui is amazing and makes thin easier IMO

From what I have heard it should be a pretty easy port seeing as it's based off of cm9/10. I 'll probably give it a try tomorrow and upload a test build for you to try out, but im not making any promises because this week is busy for me.
EDIT: what one would you like me to try JB or ICS?

Well, if your asking what I personally would like, then you freakin" rock sir! I suppose if I were to choose which I'd like to see first it would be a cm9 base, simply because odds are it would be the most stable. A jb build would be incredible, but I generally only flash roms that are fully functional & can be used as a daily driver. I'm not the flashaholic I once was mostly because I don't have the time to be. If your able to get it booting & its stable that would be fantastic! I've personally always looked at PA as a rom that's more for something like the Note, but I think the gs3 is just large enough that I want to run with it & reinvent how I use my primary phone. If we get a 100% functional build, I may never look back, but like I said above, I've never really driven it hard before?
I got it booting but I have no signal wifi works though. I'm no dev so maybe someone can help me.
I have no signal cause it made me lose my IMEI
OK so I restored my Nandroid and I have my IMEI back. My IMEI said unknown in phone settings so im guessing that it was just the roms fault not a wiped IMEI? anyway here are some pics and I will upload the build. Root doesn't work as well as pad control but it's a start. Any dev is welcome to take this and use it to try and make it more functional.

Im pretty sure it's because the permissions aren't properly set for the pad.prop among others. I will have a look at the updater script tomorrow.

Wow Bro, that was fast! I know nothing about developing or porting, but I've just been starting to look into a few threads on the 101. It's definitely nothing that I'll pick up overnight, lol! Maybe if you post the build in development someone will work on it with you? I never thought I'd say this, but TW is running so smooth & has so many nice touches on FreeGS3 that I probably won't flash anything until this is running strong or a super stable Jellybean Rom of any flavor drops.

Ya I'm kind of a noob myself learning as I go.
I love PA! Hope you get some other devs to help you get this fully functional.
Once they finalize CM10, a port of JB PA would be awesome!

+1! When we get PA stable, that will get me away from FreeGS3 to check it out. Every day that I use FreeGS3 I fall more I think love with Red's tweaked TW build! I would run this on any device, there are alot of great features in TW now, & Red added even more. I love the tablet style apps though, they are so much more funtional. If I could keep a TW base, but get tablet mode for all my apps then that would be the perfect rom for me. I don't think that'll ever happen, so I'll have to run PA for a week once it's finished & see which I prefer.

Yes! Please keep working on this! I've been waiting for this ROM I used it on my vibrant before and loved it even on a small screen. This would be so much better! Thanks

I see a few things that aren't perfect just looking through the zip. Wont know more until i get it flashed but this shouldn't be too difficult.
I fixed ril. But it broke boot.
Ril paths in build.prop should be
rild.libpath=/system/lib/libril-qc-qmi-1.so
rild.libargs=-d /dev/smd0
But somehow that breaks boot.
