So, I'm going go to Sprint to pay the 35 dollars to get my screen fixed. Would it be a big deal if they see that the phone has Cyanogen on it? Bought the phone from Radio Shack so it's not like they would tell them about it. xP
It probably depends on the store, but I took mine in the other day for a screwed up screen, and they fixed it. I know they rebooted it, because it was off when I gave it to them and on when I picked it up. So I know they saw the CyanogenMod boot screen. I'm sure other things may have tipped them off, too, but they didn't give me any trouble about it and let me sign up for their protection plan anyway.
Give it a shot. It's not like they're going to hold your phone ransom.
P.S. I did take my SD card out before I gave it to them.
As always, I recommend you unroot. We all know that rooting doesnt cause hardware malfunctions, or has nothing to do with your scratched screen. But it does void the warranty, and there is always the possibility they will catch it. I wouldnt take the chance.

Well if they do care, and they do catch it, they will permanently void your warranty, so every sprint store will see it and you will never get your phone fixed.
Maybe hold on to your battery while they fix it?
Or just take the steps to do a nandroid backup, then unroot it.
I never bother unrooting before having my phone serviced, I just do a nandroid backup and then install the RUU ROM version. Unless they boot into recovery, they can't tell and it's so much easier to restore when I get it back.
The guys at my sprint store are always fascinated with my phones when I bring them in. I had my Evo rooted before I even activated it, put CM 6.1 on it, tried to activate it but it wouldn't so I took it to the sprint store and they couldent figure it out. Brought it back home, flashed stock RUU and activated just fine, took it back and let the guys play around with CM 6.1 and they were asking how to root theirs.
I guess it just depends on the store

Don't worry, you're rooted EVO will be just fine.. Now, if it were an iPhone and you were going to the * I have Mr job's hot dog up my azz* 'Genius Bar' .. that'd be a different story..
I Called and asked if they cared that my phone was rooted and they didn't. Doesn't sound like your going in under a warranty item your paying them to fix it. They generally only care about rooted if your having software issues. Like I said call the store DON'T give them your name talk to the tech and ask him what their policy is on rooted phones. it would seem to me your paying them to fix the screen it shouldn't matter if its rooted or not. Call them and ask it wont hurt.
If you have TEP on your phone does it still cost $35 to have your screen replaced. I have a tiny scratch on mine and I'm not sure it's worth $35 but if its free I might do it.

Nope with TEP it is free. Had my cracked camera lens fixed yesterday and they new it was rooted. Free with TEP. To be totally safe just nandroid and unroot.
Sorry for the N00B question but how would I nandroid and unroot?
Any cosmetic damage will not be covered under TEP for free you will have to pay the $35 to get the screen fixed. so if the screen just has a scratch they wont replace it for free they will make you pay the $35 fee
If you are going in for a scratched screen, I doubt they would care. Just nandroid backup and flash the stock RUU. However, for software issues, the stores and refurb people are soon to be asked to check in recovery for S-OFF and void your warranty.
Half those guys in the store probably have a rooted phone themselves.
The Sprint store I go to, 2 of the guys have rooted evos and another has a rooted samsung galaxy s. Maybe go in there beforehand and talk to some of them. They dont even care about rooting necessarily; its not like it screws the sales guys or anything.

No, I'm told that if the screen isn't broken, they won't fix the screen for just scratches.

Haha thats actually not true at all. Apple replaced my iPod touch headphones 4 times while I had that device. To get them replaced they needed to see my iPod to check some setting on it. Every time I brought it in it was jailbroken, themed, and had hidden icons so I always had to help them find the settings app. Nobody ever called me out on it being jailbroken and I was never denied service or warranty coverage because of it.

My store, one rooted Evo, and one rooted Intercept. Here we don't care about it too much.... unless the customer is a straight up ass.
Store I use to work at, rooted Evo, rooted Epic, rooted Hero, but they don't do S&R there.
Hey guys.
I've been thinking if I should even keep my insurance on my EVO. If my screen breaks, it's $35 (without insurance). If it doesn't, I just spend $84 on nothing every year. I'm rooted BTW.
Can someone help me make up my mind seeing how I can't do it myself? Hahaha. Seriously, can someone who knows the insurance policy help me out?
If you plan to flash other roms, kernels, mods, etcetera, keep your insurance.

I would keep it. Yeah, it's $84 a year, but I've used mine twice so far. While the issues I had probably could've been covered under warranty, I saved a lot of Excedrin by having insurance. One of the phones had a software problem on the stock not rooted rom, which I'm sure would've been a pain to get replaced without insurance.

This is my 3rd Evo. The first 2, my screen went out. Sprint replaced them because it was within 30 days. I flashed CM7, have a nandroid of the stock rom, I know how to unroot and haven't had any problems with this one. I don't know. I feel like I'm trying to convince myself because I'm cheap, but you guys do make a point. Does anyone know how much it costs if my USB goes out (without insurance)? I'm probably going to keep it, but out of curiosity.

Better Safe
Worst comes to worst and you do run into a situation its better to have it than not. I'd say keep it, if you lose or someone steals your phone atleast you won't have to come out of pocket with so much.
Insurance on ANY smartphone is a MUST these days. Too many things can go wrong and it's better to be safe than sorry

Some sprint corp stores told me to do insurance as usb and hdmi ports are not covered as it is always user damage. I called sprint customer care and got an advanced warrenty replacement from another corp. Store that does advanced warrenty replacements.

Just keep it for peace of mind, if it bricks then say you lost it. If you lose it say you lost it. Anything happens to it, you're good. Don't be cheap you bought a killer phone obviously you have some $ right.

Cracked screens are no longer repaired in Sprint repair locations at all. It is now handled by Asurion, with the $100 deductible.

I think my phone heard me threatening to take off the insurance, hahaha. It froze on the boot screen for a LONG time. This is the first time it happened to me. I just took the battery out and turned the phone back on. It's fine now, just scared me.
BTW, the $35 for screen repair I was talking about wasn't about Sprint (I don't know how much their prices are). I was talking about a cell phone repair shop in my area. Those guys told me they would do it for $35 (this includes labor).

Ok so im having the loose usb port problem with my phone and im going to be sending it in for warranty exchange. One thing is i rooted my phone and the S-off shows up if you look. Also i never installed custom roms or anything so it looks like a normal evo if you flip through the menus and stuff. Superuser is also gone and no root apps or anything is on the phone just that it shows s-off if you look. So will sprint look for the s-off when i ship it back to them a charge me or anything?? im also running the OTA 2.3.3

Different stores have different standards for root. My store here in knoxville told me, of course after I've unrooted sadly enough, that they do not check for s on. They only look to see if you have a custom Rom. And especially if it is a hardware, the rep told me they don't normally care either way. If it is software related, they will not work on a device running a custom Rom.

I'm curious as to why you are sending it? Going to the store is easier. And also, if they don't fix rooted devices, all they can do is tell you no and send you away.
But personally I don't think they will check. Especially because your issue seems to be a major hardware issue.

I also have had bad experiences at Sprint stores. They all seem to treat you like you're dumb, but soemtimes you get lucky and get to speak with a nice respectful rep.
Here is what I would say/do.
First, do you have insurance? That is very important.
If you do, try this. But proceed with caution.
Take your micro usb cord and really jam up your slot. Like, really bend the attachment piece out of place.
Go in and tell the rep that your device does not charge properly and really needs repair or replaced. Ask nicely. I'm sure those peeps deal with jerks all day long. Prolly why they dish back out to some of us nice folks.
Show the repair tech the damage.
If you have insurance they will be more than happy to help you.
If you don't have insurance please please please do not take this route!!!

Oh.......
Here is the deal. I've asked several different sprint reps about this over the phone as well as in the store.
Once you purhase your Evo, sprint gives you a 30 day warranty. Within 30 days, you are eligible to return phone, trade phones, or replace phone with a brand new one if there are manufacture defects.
After 30 days, your Sprint purchase warranty ends. But HTC also has a warranty. It is a one year limited warranty. It is mainly for defects and other various issues. Basically, you send your phone ($6 shipping handling) to HTC and they diagnose it. If it is manufacture defect, they either repair or send you a refurbished device without charge. If they decide it is user error or you damaged phone, they call or email you to inform you that you have two options. A. pay full price for repair and shipping back home. B. Pay 35$ fee to get phone back unrepaired.
The deal is this. Sprint offers you the service and guarantees you service and only the service. Your device was not made by sprint but by HTC, and being so, issues must be dealt with through HTC...unless you purchase insurance.
This is my advice to you. Call sprint. Ask them about insurance. It is $7 a month. Ask them how soon it takes affect after you purchase it. Usually is immediate. Then, in the next week or so, go to sprint store. Now you have insurance and they will deal with you and repair your phone right there and then. And if you want, later after your device is fixed, you cancel insurance.

So i have a ET with a terribly cracked screen and cannot use TEP because they want an affedavid and i do not have a proper ID. Ive already made a claim before i realized i neeed such but im not sure if the system has it recognized that the ET is what i was clamining. Im wondering , if i put the ET on someone else account , wait a few hours , and then make a claim , have the phone sent , and then put on my account wit a couple hours after that. Would this pluasibly work? Any one else do any sort of "trick" like this? Its not really a scam or any thing , lol . I just dont have an ID. Will they know theres already a claim on the specific phone or even notice?
do you have a repair center near you
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
There are so many repair centers that can fix screens, why take the chance on your account being shut off, and oh yeah Sprint can tell the difference, so why risk a possible arrest for fraud. Find the repair center, cost maybe under 120.00 if there no internal damage.
Go pay the $20 to your state for a I.D. Card. They will issue a Temp I.D. that is a acceptable form of I.D. for the next 3 or 4 weeks, until real one arrives.
Ive abandoned the idea and am waiting for an ID in the mail , lol. Patience pays. What a Stupid thread I made. My apologies. Thanks for the responses though.
Cant wait to be able to complete the claim and get my beast of a phone back. Until then , stuck with the original Epic. O and for some reason the lcd+digitizer for the ET is absolutley impossible to find any where. Ive tried all over google , and every repair center in my area.
Yeah, I think you would have to wait 30 days if you switched phone to someone else's account. At least, I know you have to wait if you add it to existing account.

The phone does not boot. I plug it in without a battery and it shows the red LED, but that is the only response I can get from it.
I'm not sure where to go from here and that's why I'm wondering what to do from the wonderful members over here.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

This happened to me couple of weeks ago. JTAG is your only option. I used another guy who was cheaper ($25 for JTAG + $5 for shipping and $5 for me to ship the phone over to him). I mailed him the my phone on Friday and it was back in my hand the next Thursday. If your phone is not under warranty, that's your best option. Here's one of his eBay listings: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unbrick-Sam...653?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item417592da4d
Just bite the bullet and use an old flip phone for one week

:/ I've tried tons of ways to try and get into download mode. I read that if you are hard bricked, a jig wont work. Odin doesn't want to pick anything up.
I'm heading to ATT in about an hour when they open and hopefully something good comes out of it. I'll be sure to update you guys on what happens.
To every story there is an ending, and here is mine.
I went to the ATT store and played dumb, I tripped when walking into the store and pretended to hurt my leg.
Ok, not really. I walked in, talked to a nice lady and explained how the recent update to 4.1.2 made my phone stop working. Perfect timing, I know, haha. She tried the usual, removing battery, plugging it in and putting in a new battery. Didn't work.
She was very nice and basically said, well, we'll replace it for you for free. I was ecstatic(on the inside). She called up some higher power from the phone and talked to them for a bit. She explained the situation to them and then to me. The device was still under the 1 year warranty from Samsung and they'll replace it for me. I should be getting my new phone in the mail in a few days and just have to mail the bricked one back to them. So happy!
Thank's for the everyone and if anyone finds this story later on, this method works. It's not the most morally acceptable method, but if you look at the big picture, we should technically shouldn't be paying hundreds for a phone plan anyways.
Thanks again, cheers.
