[Q] Manually set clock speed? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've used SetCPU in the past and have determined that my max stable clock speed is 113600; I've also read that using SetCPU to control clock speed can create some problems.
How would one go about manually overclocking the phone without using SetCPU? I was looking around in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq and it looks like there are kernel settings there, just want to make sure I don't bork anything in the process
Thanks in advance!

From my understanding is that if you get an overclock kernel it will basically run in the same fashion as your current kernel (as far as governing speed goes) except you'll have a higher max frequency.

SetCPU is the GUI to do what you are talking about... Are you looking to go past 1.113? I can only get to 1.113, but if I run Hyrda's OCOV kernel I can get to 1.15.
I would say if you don't know what you are doing, I wouldn't mess with it. Nandroid is handy if you do.

I'm running invisiblek's #16 kernel but max clock speed is showing 998. Not trying to go over 1.13 but thought I read somewhere about being able to manually change it in the system files somewhere without using SetCPU.
IIRC the idea was to use SetCPU to determine your max stable clock speed, then change it manually in a system file somewhere and then not use SetCPU.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling setCPU. I've had issues every once in a while when flashing a new ROM, then doing the app only restore from a TI backup cause issues.

Personally I can't say I've ever had any problems using SetCPU, but if there's a way to make it default to 1.13 without having another process running then I am all for it, thus my question. Just don't know where to change it

I can tell you i am 99.9% sure that you were right with the file location in your first post.
If you check chads thread SOMEWHERE in there i think its mentioned... Sorry to say but i have no idea where.

Here's a script that Ziggy wrote, you can edit it to your needs and flash it and fix permissions. Without editing it's set at 1.113GHz Interactive screen on and .384GHz Ondemand screen off if I remember correctly. It also has another tweak (memory management I believe?). But hey, it's a start.

Much appreciated guys, I will check out Chad's thread again and look at that script. I just don't see the need for SetCPU if I can just plug in my known stable values and roll it like that Thanks again!

Fixed lol sorry

LOL Blah! :-D

I have tried editing those files and it does not seem to change the clock speed. Anyone who has successfully done it manually could you please list all the specific files. Also im going to examine the script that was linked and see if i can tweak it a bit. Ill post any findings here.

I use the custom kernel #18 and setcpu, clocked to 1.115 easily with cm6.1. works awesome and smokin fast.

I edited Ziggy's script using EditPad lite (free, just Google it) since I'm on Windows so as not to change the format. Flashed from recovery then fixed permission in Root Explorer. Worked like a charm.

[Q] setcpu on baked snack question.

So I'm running baked snack here and really beginning to enjoy it and this whole root thing. I've installed setcpu but every time I back out of the interface it goes down to 691 no matter how high I set it or on any profile. Does this not work with baked snack? Am I overlooking something or did I set it up wrong(I used auto detect when I started)?
Did you flash a different kernal?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Nope I flashed kernel 3 I think or what ever came included in the baked snack.
should I DL that kernel by itself and then flash over the Baked snack with it? and whats the difference between flash over and flash ontop of?
Damn the stupidity of it all... lol. I set my profile to 691 if my battery was under 40% which it was... but now when I plug my phone in the cpu goes up to 1ghz which I have it set to but my battery keeps going down. Now this is a problem here if I'm not able to charge my phone while the setcpu is running it will get really annoying really fast. Considering the app manager that I have refuses to close it so I have to manually go to settings > applications > manage applications then go to setcup and force close it to charge my phone it seems. Do you guys think its a problem with my cpu being set to high while charging should I drop it down a whole bunch for the charge process too? That doesn't seem like a very needed thing to do I would assume it would be able to charge just fine without that. Looks like I got a lot to learn about this whole rooted phone thing.
Check your profiles in setcpu and make sure you don't have one that's at that speed with the highest priority. If that all checks out fine I would flash kernal 2 (my favorite) don't wipe just flash. And as for your question over or on top they mean the same thing and that's flashing the kernal without wiping.

Also do you have overclock widget running as well? If so they might be fighting eachother
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
not even quite sure where the overclock widget is. I looked to see if setcpu had a widget and it wasn't in the widget menu. Where as most of my other installed apps have a widget assossiated with them. I'll look into kernel #2 right now, I still have some more flashing to do.

Overclock widget is just another widget you can download that runs seperatly from SetCPU. You should have a SetCPU widget though. I would try reinstalling SetCPU also

[Q] overclock issue

I'm using the virus rom airborne rc6 and the netarchy 4.3.4 kernel. I went to the app market and downloaded the overclock widget since I had used it on another evo. Whenever I set it up or go to set it up I should say the phone locks up and requires a battery pull. Start the phone back up and it freezes again on the lock screen not allowing you to use it. A restore or wipe is required. I was thinking it was the Rom or kernel so I downloaded valpeak Rom and a kernel and it did the same thing on it. Just wondering if anyone had heard seen or experienced something like this before ? Is there another over clock program that's good and stable ?
Thanks in advance

You need to clock it at a lower maximum speed. Some chips can't handle overclocking as well as other chips can. My phone can only be overclocked to like 1.1, and anything over that, I have the same issues you are explaining. Set the maximum speed a little lower and see if that helps.
That's just it when I try to set it up it freezes. I contacted the developer of the app and they said its on my end. I used the valpak before and could clock to 1.2 I'm wondering if there isnt something wrong with the kernels lime maybe they did a software update on the app and it doesn't agree with Rom or kernel. I've heard good things about set cpu I may try it. Thanks for your help

Yeah I know what you mean, you just gotta hurry and get into the app and lower the max speed before the app gets superuser permission and freezes again. Or if you have the SDK on your pc and know how to use adb, you could remove the app from the phone while connected to a pc in recovery. Also, I use setCPU, and I've had nothing but good experiences with it. I've never used Overclock widget so I can say anything about it.
try flashing a different kernel its happened to me before and thats what i had to do then i changed the max and flashed back to the other kernel

Thats how i fixed it. I ended up using the computer to remove the app and used setcpu. I normally dont care about the over clocking ability but the battery life sucks on the virus Rom. The roms great just crappy battery life. Thankfully that worked we will see if by underclocking it helps if not ill have to look for a different Rom. Thanks for your help man.

[Q] Flashing voltage on incredikernel?

I just flashed Cyanogenmod 7.0.2.1 yesterday, and then flashed chad's most recent kernel. I really want to extend my battery life, and I'm aware that voltage tweaks are the way to go to do that. Never have done that before, however, so I'm not quite sure how I'm supposed to do it. Is there a guide or some sort of simple instructions on how to do it? I'm assuming I just need to flash a file or two through ROM Manager, but I don't want to try something without knowing what I'm doing first.
Side question: With the smartass governor, I know I don't need to use SetCPU or the like, but are the any kind of CPU or performance settings I can do to push better battery life?
Just download the zip for the lower voltages and flash. Just keep in mind its not stable on all phones, resulting in reboots. And I hear people underclock to around 883MHz to save a bit more battery, but it still feels nice and snappy. I personally can't vouch for that, as I leave mine at 998MHz.

I see lots of files in the incredikernel thread. Not sure which I am supposed to flash.

I just used the one provided by Chad in the first post. My phone is one of em that handles the lower mV values.

Can't quite figure out which are the file(s) to use for the voltages. I see the setvdd_levels_signed.zip file. Not sure if its that or others which I'm supposed to try.

Thats the one. Hope your phone supports it.

but if you don't like it, be aware you have to have root explorer (or the equivalent) to remove it..

[Q] Using init.d scripts

I keep reading a lot of about how people use scripts to change their governor, CPU, voltage, and other settings.
Where are these scripts located? Is there one in the phone already? What program do I use to modify it? Also, are there scripts that will work on other phones but not our T989?
What I'm essentially asking for is to be pointed in the right direction to learn how to use these scripts.
I've been using System Tuner and I don't like how it maxes out the CPU every time I use it. Also, even when I fix it back to the correct CPU settings, the phone would refuse to go into Deep Sleep mode. My main goal right now is to use the script to undervolt my phone.
Bump. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Hey I'm waiting on a response as well...
I know you probably got all excited that someone responded to your thread dry but maybe another post will help bring attention to it.

the script usually applies if the kernel developer wrote an easy enough script for us to change the values to our liking. The general population does not know how to write our own so I wouldn't bother.
I know TDJ's darkside kernel has a section in his script that allows you change somethings
gideon's script is also straight forward, it is found at the bottom where you can change the max and min and the voltages.
gideon's script apparently works on any kernels but I would advise not flashing it on every kernel possible because it will overwrite what the developers wrote in themselves such as the darkside kernel.
You guys should check out faux's thread and tdj's thread, I think there are instructions floating around there somewhere.
gideon's script is in faux's thread too I believe.. haven't used it in forever.
I was hoping to learn how to change the CPU settings. Sure I can do it in sys tuner which I do but that's after the phone boots with the CPU set at 1.78 which is a battery killer for me. If I can learn how to simply change it in the script like say the resolution from 240 to 200 for example then I'm all good. That way I never have to **** with it again and I learn something along the way. Problem is I have no idea where to look for this.

[Q] Over/Under clocking

I was wondering on how exactly I do this? I looked through and seen people talking about it, but not how to do it. Can someone explain to me what it does, and how to do it?

There are actually several ways to do this. The most popular of which are to have a rooted rom, install a separate application and use that application to modify your cpu speed. The more popular applications to do this are:
SetCPU
ROM Toolbox
ROM Toolbox light
I've used all of these and if I could suggest one to you, I would say ROM Toolbox, because it gives you a lot of other tools that SetCPU does not. HOWEVER, I find that in regards to overclocking/underclocking and setting profiles, SetCPU is much more handy and offers more customization.

Is there any certain configuration that you find best? Thanks for all the links and suggestions also!
System tuner pro is also nice. There is no " right" settings. Your phone might not like my settings profile. They are all different. I do however under clock. I see no lag on cm9 beta1. I use a Max CPU of 1ghz. I also under volt everything by -25 because -50 on Evert step crashes my phone. Yours may like it. Just remember do not push the set on boot button until you are sure your phone can handle the new setting.

It is pretty much a try what works. I find that over clocking is nice for certain things, but I like to have a long battery life as well, so I have mine set up so that the CPU is usually running ondemand 800-200 and for certain programs, ondemand 1200-500 and when the screen is turned off it is ondemand 500-200. I haven't had any problems and my battery life is generally very nice. Everyone's phone is different though.
