[Q] Flashing voltage on incredikernel? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just flashed Cyanogenmod 7.0.2.1 yesterday, and then flashed chad's most recent kernel. I really want to extend my battery life, and I'm aware that voltage tweaks are the way to go to do that. Never have done that before, however, so I'm not quite sure how I'm supposed to do it. Is there a guide or some sort of simple instructions on how to do it? I'm assuming I just need to flash a file or two through ROM Manager, but I don't want to try something without knowing what I'm doing first.
Side question: With the smartass governor, I know I don't need to use SetCPU or the like, but are the any kind of CPU or performance settings I can do to push better battery life?

Just download the zip for the lower voltages and flash. Just keep in mind its not stable on all phones, resulting in reboots. And I hear people underclock to around 883MHz to save a bit more battery, but it still feels nice and snappy. I personally can't vouch for that, as I leave mine at 998MHz.

I see lots of files in the incredikernel thread. Not sure which I am supposed to flash.

I just used the one provided by Chad in the first post. My phone is one of em that handles the lower mV values.

Can't quite figure out which are the file(s) to use for the voltages. I see the setvdd_levels_signed.zip file. Not sure if its that or others which I'm supposed to try.

Thats the one. Hope your phone supports it.

but if you don't like it, be aware you have to have root explorer (or the equivalent) to remove it..

set cpu yes or no?

okay, I used to use set cpu... then I read that set cpu actually kills your batttery, so I stopped using it.
currently i'm using VirusRom anthraX RC1 with 2.6.32.15-king-havs-OcUV-aosp
should I be using set cpu?
+1. also, the first time i used it, i oc'ed all the way and instantly got a reboot. is this the starting point in the infinite reboot cycle? i had that problem happen to my last evo.... not fun

bump, help us.
I am thinking the dconfig file virus has will work on Anthrax..use it on Airborne and REVolution roms of his, along with SetCPU, and getting good results.

Its entirely up to you. If you feel you phone isn't fast enough for you then OC it. SetCPU is required to overclock. If you don't overclock then you don't need setcpu. You will most likely have better battery life if you don't overclock. I run mine both ways I oveclock for a while then run stock for a while. Battery life is better at stock speeds.
My advise when playing with setcpu is to uncheck the set on boot just encase you set it too high. Take baby steps don't just jack it up all the way. Also I think some kernels can use a configuration file, I don't know anything about that.

[Q] Manually set clock speed?

I've used SetCPU in the past and have determined that my max stable clock speed is 113600; I've also read that using SetCPU to control clock speed can create some problems.
How would one go about manually overclocking the phone without using SetCPU? I was looking around in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq and it looks like there are kernel settings there, just want to make sure I don't bork anything in the process
Thanks in advance!
From my understanding is that if you get an overclock kernel it will basically run in the same fashion as your current kernel (as far as governing speed goes) except you'll have a higher max frequency.

SetCPU is the GUI to do what you are talking about... Are you looking to go past 1.113? I can only get to 1.113, but if I run Hyrda's OCOV kernel I can get to 1.15.
I would say if you don't know what you are doing, I wouldn't mess with it. Nandroid is handy if you do.
I'm running invisiblek's #16 kernel but max clock speed is showing 998. Not trying to go over 1.13 but thought I read somewhere about being able to manually change it in the system files somewhere without using SetCPU.
IIRC the idea was to use SetCPU to determine your max stable clock speed, then change it manually in a system file somewhere and then not use SetCPU.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling setCPU. I've had issues every once in a while when flashing a new ROM, then doing the app only restore from a TI backup cause issues.
Personally I can't say I've ever had any problems using SetCPU, but if there's a way to make it default to 1.13 without having another process running then I am all for it, thus my question. Just don't know where to change it
I can tell you i am 99.9% sure that you were right with the file location in your first post.
If you check chads thread SOMEWHERE in there i think its mentioned... Sorry to say but i have no idea where.
Here's a script that Ziggy wrote, you can edit it to your needs and flash it and fix permissions. Without editing it's set at 1.113GHz Interactive screen on and .384GHz Ondemand screen off if I remember correctly. It also has another tweak (memory management I believe?). But hey, it's a start.
Much appreciated guys, I will check out Chad's thread again and look at that script. I just don't see the need for SetCPU if I can just plug in my known stable values and roll it like that Thanks again!
Fixed lol sorry

LOL Blah! :-D
I have tried editing those files and it does not seem to change the clock speed. Anyone who has successfully done it manually could you please list all the specific files. Also im going to examine the script that was linked and see if i can tweak it a bit. Ill post any findings here.
I use the custom kernel #18 and setcpu, clocked to 1.115 easily with cm6.1. works awesome and smokin fast.

I edited Ziggy's script using EditPad lite (free, just Google it) since I'm on Windows so as not to change the format. Flashed from recovery then fixed permission in Root Explorer. Worked like a charm.

[q] want a rom with overclock built in...

Can anyone tell me the best rom that comes with an overclocked kernal built in? Looking for a kernal that has killer battery life also. I've been looking but i'm new to the dinc and am not sure what the best one is. I tried to install a custom ziggy kernal with incredibly re-engineered installed but it started rebooting every time it started up... Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Did you read everything before flashing ziggy's kernel? this is quoted from his site. did you have setcpu installed before you flashed?
NOTE1: If you’re having problems, please uninstall/disable SetCPU and any init scripts first. A lot of the issues are OC related. If everything works fine after doing that, slowly start over-clocking, if not, please post. Once the problem speed is found, report it, but most likely, it’s a voltage issue, not all phones/processors are equal. Since these kernels have snq-’s VDD sysfs interface, you can modify the VDD levels yourself. If there are any Java developers that would like to tackle the task of writing a program to assist, please do, I’ll help as much as I can
oh and make sure you dl the right kernel its the bottom 2 on his page. i made that mistake earlier today. tryed loading a bravo kernel and my phone got stuck in the splash screen

Incredibly re-engineered comes with Lou's #8 kernel, which is my understanding that it already has pre-configured screen off speeds, governor etc. It could be as simple as a wipe cache/dalvik that would solve your problem.
Other than that, i'm curious as to why you are looking into OC when you want killer battery? Those don't go together
Ok. I missed the setcpu statement. Ill try that... and I want to oc because this inc wont play the only game I play worth a crap compared to my old x... homerun battle 3d... im hoping that will help...

hmmm homerun battle 3d plays fine on my end. Check my sig for my rom and kernel, stock speeds.
chads incredikernel is probably the best for gaming, its oc-able..i actually run it some days on 1075 mhz performance, and get great batt life

[Q] Help with overclocking.

newbie member here needing help with overclocking my evo. i am very familiar with loading custom roms but for some reason i can not find any step by step guides to overclocking. i am running the fresh evo rom with king kernel 9. i downloaded the supersonic zip and tried installing it from recovery, and my phone wouldnt reboot past the first "htc evo4g" screen. just kept rebooting into that screen. any help would be appreciated. and if i posted this in the wrong place there is no need for assholes telling me. im new here.
What was in the supersonic zip? What exactly were you trying to flash?
The easiest way would be to get setcpu, and then adjst the values.
Just get setcpu from the market. Overclock away.

As teh roxx asked, what was the 'supersonic zip' that you flashed? I am not familiar with it. Is it something specific to fresh's rom? From the point you're at now, your best bet will be to restore a nandroid backup (if you have one) to get you back to where you were before you flashed the 'supersonic.zip'. If you don't have a nandroid backup to restore, you're most likely going to have to re flash your rom, if you are indeed completely stuck at the splash screen. Have you tried wiping cache and dalvik cache, then rebooting agaain? If it just hangs at the splash, restore nandroid or reflash the rom. Thats basically the only option to ge t you up again.
And I don't really overclock at all, but I believe you just need a kernel that supports overclocking, and use an app like SetCpu or OS monitor to change the clock speed. Never check the setting 'set on boot' until you're sure that the changes you've made are running stable.
Just flash cm7 it has cpu governor built in

Why do you want to overclock your device?
In all likelihood, you should expect only an improvement in CPU frequency of about 12%.
However, you should consider what the potential consequences of that could be. Although there are certain tolerances included, you should consider that consistently operating at higher frequencies could negatively affect the durability and/or longevity of your device's CPU. If additional cooling were something that you could add, then perhaps thermal thresholds would not be an issue. Because smearing thermal paste everywhere is not an option, you should consider another option.
The advantage of a custom ROM is that in some cases it's designed with profiled-governors and absent bloatware that tends to prematurely drain your battery and decrease overall performance.
I am not convinced an increase from 984 MHz to 1113 MHz is worth being tethered to an AC outlet.

overclocking epic 4g

What is the safest speed you can overclock the samsung epic 4g? I am using the Tegrak overclock right now, and I found out the ultimate can run up to 2ghz.
That doesn't work. You have to be using a custom kernel to overclock the Epic and it is only safe up to 1.4ghz.

FYI, complete newb to this stuff, so please bear with me. Are you saying that it takes a custom kernal for the Tegrak Ulitimate, or the the version I have right now? With the Tegrak Overclock, I put it at 1.3 and it seems noticably faster.
Tegrak ultimate shouldn't work at all, and you're lucky it didn't royally screw up your phone without a kernel with support for overclocking. Look in development and select a custom kernel to fit your tastes then download either SetCPU or OverClock widget and use one of them to raise the clock speed on your phone. I recommend either of those because they are tried and tested methods.

Weird, on the android market it says that it (the standard Tegrak) works with stock kernels, custom kernels, and custom roms. I checked before installing it and I just double checked it now
For the record, it has been a while since I played with my phone, but it's kernel right now is 2.6.32.9

Another thought; I've had setcpu for a while, but didn't find much use for it as the phone is already operating at 1GHZ, which is the max SetCPU will allow the phone to work.
Because there isn't a kernel that support OverClocking installed.Once you have an overclock-compatible kernel installed SetCPU can raise the CPU speed.

I see. Thanks for the info
Also, while tegrak may work I strongly recommend a custom kernel for added stability, along with overclock capabilities up to 1.4ghz (depending on if your phone can handle it) undervolting and other useful features.
Each phone is different. Some phones can handle 1.4ghz, others can't even handle 1.2ghz. You just have to test it out and see what your phone can handle.

Thank you
After reading the link to Twilite, I am interested in running the SyndicateROM Frozen. Any chance someone could walk me through the steps? I'm not being lazy and am doing research, just want to make sure I don't screw up my phone. I am at work right now, so I haven't even attempted to get Twilite yet. Perhaps getting the new rom would accomplish two things at once??
Edit: After some reading I think I will be ok, but if anyone wants to chime in then feel free.

I made this video and it should help you out. The twilight kernel comes with the syndicate rom so you don't need to flash it since it already comes with the rom.
Is there any truth to a post I read stating some kernels support Wifi Tether and others don't?
