[Q] Restore to factory Rom? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My dad got a desire z like a week ago and the screen needs to be replaced because its blotchy. He flashed what I understand to be a generic Nordic Rom to it (he lives 3 hours away so I haven't seen it). He didn't know to do a nandroid backup so that's out of the question.
He's tech savvy but new to the platform, is there any easy way for him to revert back?

I think more people could help if you tell us what was his original ROM
BTW that "generic nordic ROM" phrase sounds sooo x10

He can flash a RUU into it to revert it back to the state when it was shipped. Also he needs to reverse it back to S-ON.

What version of ROM is he trying to go back to ? And how is his phone S-OFF'd, does it have radio S-OFF or just the engineering hboot ?

Nope. It can't be done currently.
I know how you feel.. Thankfully I got lucky in that my screen started coming up in the corners like adhesive wasn't working -- and when they swapped me out with another new unit (had been 10 out of 30 days) it had 2.1
My evo replacement came with 2.1 but when I rooted my phone, my nandroid would not restore.
I tried to format my sdcard but to no avail so I just did the OTA. Waiting on root just like you, brother.

I just got my replacement yesterday. I had waited 19 days! I booted up the phone in the sprint store, took a peak in software, and saw "2.1 update 1". I smiled and said "Thank you, sir".
Got my replacement today and it was of course a refurbed unit, but had 2.2 on it, so im in the same boat as the rest of you OTA'd guys lol. Sucks, as im impatient, but ill wait, dont think ill lose too much more of my mind between now and then
Two things you can do:
1) Start another thread asking if you can root 2.2. Those are SO in right now. Don't bother searching first, you'll just get confused by all the results.
2) Start another BOUNTY thread offering money you never intend to pay to the first dev who roots 2.2 for you.
That seems to be the route people are taking these days.

[Q] Taking rooted EVO in for service

I have an EVO with a cracked screen that's running one of the CM7 nightlies. I need to take it in for service, but I was wondering if I should flash back to some stock ROM first. If I do, what should I download that will allow me to re-root the phone? If I understand things correctly here, the current Sprint image has not been rooted yet, so I want to make sure that I don't wind up locking myself out of my phone.
Flash the ruu for 2.2 and make sure when you take it in you make sure to tell the tech not to update your phone cause they will do it out of habit.

Any idea where I might find the specific RUU that I will be able to root my way out of?
last time I took my Evo for service I was running Mik3D... they replace the kickstand without any questions.. also tech guy was looking at different setting in my phone and didn't said a word to me..

I get the impression that they mostly don't care. I originally took it in last month and the guy first asked if it was rooted (the lock screen was different), to which I replied yes, and he said something along the lines of "cool I rooted mine too". He then asked if I had insurance, and when I said no, he told me to sign up for insurance and come back in a month. Yet another reason I'm happy with Sprint
Eh, it is a hardware issue, cracked screen. You should be able to leave it as is. If you want, put a PC36IMG.zip of stock Froyo on your SD card in case they are ridiculous and insist on unrooting. Never S-On, they rarely ever check for it

[Q] Unroot Bell Desire Z for Warranty; is this right?

Hey Everyone!
I regret to say that my touchscreen has become unresponsive in an area. Bad times.
The Good and Bad Round 1.
The good news is that I'll get it repaired/replaced by Bell. Woot. The bad news is that, of course, I need to have all my software elements back to stock.
BTW, I purchased the phone in January 2011, the box says it was shipped out on Nov. 29th, 2010
The Good and Bad Round 2.
The good news is that I have managed an Unrooted Stock ROM, HBOOT? (not 100% sure the RUU updated this one...), Radio, and Recovery, CID Lock, and S-On. The bad news is I'm not sure what came on my phone and if it's actually the right configuration...Here is what I have:
Build 1.34.666.1 CL273326 release keys (and the kernel, and recovery from that RUU)
VISION PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT 0.85.0005
Radio 26.03.02.18_M3
Is this all correct/did I miss anything?
Thanks so much if you can help me out!! Even just saying that you sent your phone in for warranty after rooting/unrooting successfully will put my mind more at ease lol.
Cheers!

bell software is usually build verison 1.84. also i think the hboot should be 0.84 for bell desire z's
thanks for the quick reply. If I'm not mistaken, the rom I would have had mine shipped with would have been 1.34.666.1 or 1.34.666.5...I think the 1.84.666.x was the OTA update given in the spring, and I'm not sure whether I would have received that or not...
regardless, I figured it would be playing it safe by going with what was the most "original" since if I had an older, shipped rom, they wouldn't bat an eye at it, since it would seem as though I simply declined the OTA update.
I guess what I really need to know is when the 1.34.666.5 build was released/shipped. I know that's a pretty arcane piece of knowledge...
Anyone out there buy a Desire Z from Bell in late 2010/early 2011 that can check their software versions? and hasn't rooted it? (and thus pointlessly frequents xda...?) ((perhaps i should try to ask in some other forum))

Thanks for the input guys.
When i get my phone back i'll post a thorough guide for the squeamish/noobs to doing this with the right files etc. I found a way to do it that only takes about 20 minutes once you are set up. Finding all the right stuff was the hardest part
Hi I need to unroot my desire z for the same reasons as you, I rooted it using the cyanogen guide here (wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting)
What guides did you use to unroot as I have no idea what to do and all I can find are warnings about how much more dangerous it is to do.
Thanks!
FYI the guide to do this is up now:

2 years down, My play is jus a psp

Hi all, Its been almost 2 years since i did an OTA update on my play and bricked it. Using the first patch that came out to fix this problem of phone not booting, i "destroyed" the bootloader or something or RadioRom and my phone does not accept any sim. it was originally unlocked.
Has anyone come up with a way to revive the play to make calls or something. cos its really depressing having a phone jus lying there wasting away, only to be brought out when needed for navigation or games.
Someone please helppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
Again, not development related

Surely, if your phone is unlocked you can flash a new firmware, and get back onto a kernel and custom ROM, right?
If it was an OTA update that destroyed the phone, they should have replaced it or offered you a discount on a replacement, too; unless it was a custom ROM OTA like CyanogenMod offers.
dont know how to move post, but reposted in QA section... so help pls

Bro, find the appropriate FTF files, download Flashtool, plug up your phone and revert back to stock.
BTW, if you bricked it 2 years ago, you could have gotten it replaced for free by you service provider (at least you can do that with Verizon here in the US)

Keyboard Fix?

Since i updated to my wifes and eldest daughters Xperia S to the latest UK SIM free firmware (.200 i think it is) the phone refuses to stick with the keyboard you choose which is a bit annoying given they have both purchased Swype, any solutions on how to stop it reverting to the Xperia keyboard.
(they wont let me root them so thats not an option)

Did you try setting the default input method in "Languages and input" under settings? I've that option on my phone
yeah and before you know it both phones have reverted to the Xperia keyboard.
Unfortunately that was a known issue with the .200 firmware. I think paid widgets would also disappear from the home screen after a reboot in this firmware.
The latest firmware available for the Xperia S is 6.2.B.1.96. This update doesn't have those issues anymore. I am on O2 UK and the latest update shown for me was .200. I used flashtool to flash a ftf file of the latest. 96 update on to my phone. I do not have these issues with the keyboard or widgets disappearing.
Your best bet is to flash the .96 firmware on to these phones. It is like doing an official update and doesn't invalidate any warranties you may have on your devices.

Tar mate, i might have to go down that road (if i can persuade them) because its driving them a bit mental.
I noticed yesterday on my daughters Xperia S it refuses to let you use icon packs with Nova Launcher as well, well i lie, it will let you pick them and kid you in to thinking they are there and before you know it the phone has reverted back to stock.
Sony should have shot the Xperia S at birth, its not been right or perfectly usable in stock form since it was released.
just flash the latest firmware with flashtool, it's not unofficial or voids any warranty or anything like that. it's fine and good to use

As i said in my original post the phones belong to my wife and my eldest daughter, im not sure if you have ever tried to convince a female family member that flashing their phone via a non standard method is a good idea but if you have you will understand that your testicles are under threat of being separated from your corduroysack unfortunately.
