[Q] Unroot Bell Desire Z for Warranty; is this right? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone!
I regret to say that my touchscreen has become unresponsive in an area. Bad times.
The Good and Bad Round 1.
The good news is that I'll get it repaired/replaced by Bell. Woot. The bad news is that, of course, I need to have all my software elements back to stock.
BTW, I purchased the phone in January 2011, the box says it was shipped out on Nov. 29th, 2010
The Good and Bad Round 2.
The good news is that I have managed an Unrooted Stock ROM, HBOOT? (not 100% sure the RUU updated this one...), Radio, and Recovery, CID Lock, and S-On. The bad news is I'm not sure what came on my phone and if it's actually the right configuration...Here is what I have:
Build 1.34.666.1 CL273326 release keys (and the kernel, and recovery from that RUU)
VISION PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT 0.85.0005
Radio 26.03.02.18_M3
Is this all correct/did I miss anything?
Thanks so much if you can help me out!! Even just saying that you sent your phone in for warranty after rooting/unrooting successfully will put my mind more at ease lol.
Cheers!

bell software is usually build verison 1.84. also i think the hboot should be 0.84 for bell desire z's

thanks for the quick reply. If I'm not mistaken, the rom I would have had mine shipped with would have been 1.34.666.1 or 1.34.666.5...I think the 1.84.666.x was the OTA update given in the spring, and I'm not sure whether I would have received that or not...
regardless, I figured it would be playing it safe by going with what was the most "original" since if I had an older, shipped rom, they wouldn't bat an eye at it, since it would seem as though I simply declined the OTA update.
I guess what I really need to know is when the 1.34.666.5 build was released/shipped. I know that's a pretty arcane piece of knowledge...
Anyone out there buy a Desire Z from Bell in late 2010/early 2011 that can check their software versions? and hasn't rooted it? (and thus pointlessly frequents xda...?) ((perhaps i should try to ask in some other forum))

Thanks for the input guys.
When i get my phone back i'll post a thorough guide for the squeamish/noobs to doing this with the right files etc. I found a way to do it that only takes about 20 minutes once you are set up. Finding all the right stuff was the hardest part

Hi I need to unroot my desire z for the same reasons as you, I rooted it using the cyanogen guide here (wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting)
What guides did you use to unroot as I have no idea what to do and all I can find are warnings about how much more dangerous it is to do.
Thanks!

FYI the guide to do this is up now:

Froyo update for Asia/Singapore?

Bros,
All I heard so far is the Froyo update will roll out in Europe this weekend. So how about Asia/Singapore area? Is there anyone here from Singapore? and any news about it?
My phone is not lock, will I get the OTA update?
Hope to hear from you guys.
Still undisclosed
I tried contacting HTC regarding this a few days ago, you can read their reply here:
www[dot]jatyap[dot]com/2010/08/froyo-release-date-for-htc-desire-in-asia-still-undisclosed/
Sorry I can't post links yet...
SEA have yet to receive an OTA update (1.21.xxx.x) that Europe received prior to this 2.2 update...not sure if hTC will release it all at once, but i'm afraid that it will take some time before SEA receive the 2.2 OTA...but i do hope i'm wrong...
I think the SEA codes are
1.19.707.7 and 8
Sorry, misread your post.
However, most Desire users currently already run Eclair (Android 2.1 update 1).
I think this was the latest release prior to FroYo.
Are you talking about the build numbers?
1.21.x.x - Europe
1.19.707.x - Asia
is what I read... There are a few other numbers if you care to look them up.
You can do a manual update if you like. I did last night and took me 1.5 hrs. It doesn't require a genius to do it.
There's another thread, I just followed it and now enjoys froyo.

flightposite, where are you located? Is this possible without rooting the phone? Can you give us the location of that thread?
I'm located in Simei.
Go to below and follow the instructions.

I may sound dumb, but I have no idea if It's rooted or not. I got my phone one month ago and have no background whatsoever.
But hey, at least I'm smart enough to follow the instructions and upgrade to froyo. : -)

yup, that that's the number i'm talking about...
IIRC, europe devices receive an update before 2.2 update...this update includes an updated radio which is required for the 2.2 update, but SEA has yet to receive this update, thus making me feel that the 2.2 update for SEA will take some time...
honestly i feel like flashing the 2.2 update using the methods described in xda, if it doesnt arrive anytime soon...
i would suggest you go ahead and do the manual flashing of the ROM and updating if you can stomach the Goldcard creation. Its considerably complicated and enough things can go wrong for the risk to be there.
I believe the official update for asia is at least one month away. In europe even the operator-locked handsets will take a couple of weeks to get their 2.2
I did mine and took less than 2 hours.
It isnt rooted at all. Just using a different original HTC ROM.

are we able to flash back to the Asia ROM when froyo is made available for Asia ROM to get back the warranty? I don't think HTC will know about it.
Stan79 : htc will know about it. Happened to a friend who is using the nexus one. He had to send a few e-mails and make 2 trips down to the service centre in harbour front to get it sorted. Oh by the way the service centre sucks big time. I have been there twice and have been trading e-mails with them for the last 2 months to get my phone sorted out. Till now i still have a buggered phone.
latest news from HTC Malaysia's facebook:
Froyo for asia will be coming late Q3. Sept maybe?

I like how HTC is an asian company and the users in asia are always one of the last to get any updates. Happen when i was using the touch pro 2 as well, waited forever for wm6.5 update.

[Q] Can you use a stock sprint RUU to down grade to 2.2 after ota update?

So I just bought Evo's for both me and the wife. I watched the sales girl take them both out of the box and she did NOT do any updates to either of them, but I seem to have the famed OTA upgrade done on both... I was wondering, on Cyanogen's forum, someone posted the official RUU for sprints 2.2. Could I drop this onto my phone and run it to downgrade so that I can root?
No it won't work unless you have rooted the phones before and the hboot OS set to S-off your stuck waiting for them to crack the OTA like so many of the rest of us. Sorry
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
ok. glad I asked first then. Thanks for bursting my bubble.

Can sprint techs do this...

well i recently received a refubed evo 4g with 2.3. my question is, can the techs at sprint downgrade my evo back to 2.2 or to a lower hboot ?
They may downgrade you to 2.2 if you complain about gingerbread..but if you ask about downgrading the hboot, I think it'll tip them off you're trying to root it / had it rooted before.
ok cool, funny thing is the techs at my sprint store have all there phone rooted LOL
call asurion and tell them the screen and battery is overheating and that you want a brand new evo and not a refurb, they will send it to you no charge.

They may or may not do that, but the new one could have GB on it too. So no point.
Right now they can't do it, unless Sprint/HTC give them a tool to do so. If they were to do so, it'd probably leak here pretty quick. My understanding is that they have the same RUU we do, which was specifically coded not to allow downgrading. That's no accident, by the way...they plugged the old root holes and didn't want to let people downgrade and root.

The only good that will really come of that is the source, so they can start making custom kernels for GB, like synergy, kingdom, ect; but yes, bring on the root.

No, that's how long they are supposed to have to release the kernel source code to comply with GPL.
As far as unlocking bootloaders, HTC said they were changing their policy, but haven't made commitments to how soon it will happen or how whether it'll apply to current devices.
I'm also not totally convinced that the carriers won't try and succeed in vetoing this new policy. Granted, they've allowed the Nexus, but they haven't promoted that device either. Hopefully they will get the message though and not stand in the way.
if a sprint store can downgrade a phone. why can't we do it as easily? I want to know exactly how they do it so we can spread the word. :-D

Seconded. The only way to rollback 2.3 is to remove the chips and force flash them via a programmer. I have done this ONCE just to see if it could be done. To be honest, no customer would ever pay the cost of having it done and even if they would I can't tie up the service center that long for one customer.

[Q] Evo 4G Gingerbread 2.3.3 Root?

Okay, so I ordered my Evo 4G back in June right before Sprint emailed me about the Evo 3D coming in 12 days from that date. When my Evo arrived, I activated it by calling sprint, made a test call, checked the software (2.2.1 I believe), threw the phone in my pocket and drove to soccer practice. When I got back home from practice, my phone had updated to 2.3.3. I suppose autoupdating was on or something and it ran the OTA itself while I was at practice. So now I am trapped with a 2.3.3 Evo with S-ON and I am furious. I am sure that there are others like me with a never rooted Evo dying to get theirs rooted as well. If anyone has any information as to the progress of either a real TEMP ROOT or FULL ROOT then don't hesitate to post it in this thread. I don't want this to be a discussion thread; just a simple "Post What You Know" sort of thing.

The best place for you to get information at this point is following some devs on twitter: alpharevx,Agraben,Unrevoked. I'm sure others can add to this list.
They seem to be making the most progress.
And sorry to hear about your phone updating itself. That sucks.

Wht is your Hboot version?
well it does not really matter the hboot. i can tell you, it is hboot 2.16. all gingerbread 2.3.3 regardless of software version (4.22.651.2 and 4.24.651.1) will have that hboot.
and unfortunately the devs will not post any progress. they may or may not post when an exploit is found. they may just post only when a temp root is available. it is all hush hush for fear of htc or even sprint releasing a silent ota that can close the exploit. so for now if you do not see any threads about an exploit or an ability to root your evo, then you should just wait. there will be posts (more like thousands, lol) about it.

I just bought my Evo 4G (RadioShack is having a sale on them now that the 3D is out) It also self-updated. I would really like to get it rooted. It comes with so much Sprint Bloatware I can only download a few apps before getting the "low space" warning.
Any help is appreciated.
Well... Is nothing you can do for now... Just waiting with all of us.
Unfortunately I received a new Evo from repair center with Hboot 2.16.0001 and last OTA included. I miss my rooted EVO...
Hope devs find a solution soon, thanks to everyone working on it.
I doubt very seriously its an auto ota update. If that was the case no one in the evo threads would still have root. It would've auto dated every evo still with 2.2, besides it says make sure the battery is full before u take it. #justsaying

Ill live since I like the sprint themes and functionality better than CM since my GPS stopped working on CM7 but i want to root so i can get wireless tether and whatnot.
in the mean time can anyone tell me how to shut the phone off all the way without pulling the battery. power off by pressing power button pretty much just puts it to sleep you cant get to recovery or hboot when powering back on.

in the mean time can anyone tell me how to shut the phone off all the way without pulling the battery. power off by pressing power button pretty much just puts it to sleep you cant get to recovery or hboot when powering back on.

Not Eligible For Update Due To Old Software

So, me and my brother live in the same town. Obviously both are on Verizon and have HTC One's. But my phone is on 1.10605.2 whereas his was on 1.10.605.8 and got the update. Im not necessarily worried about taking the update, I just dont know why my phone cant find it. And even though I'm on pre-release software, HTCDev unlock still doesn't work. ???

The software doesn't have anything to do with HTC Dev unfortunately. Verizon locked all HTC ones out after day one.

Thanks, but Im trying to upgrade to .8. You missed the intent of my post. Since I have pre-software I was hoping it would allow me an exploit. But it didnt. So now I just wanna catch up to everybody else. This is my sixth Android phone, Im not a retard.Im fully caught up on CID and MID's.

I thought the question marks after Dev unlocked denoted a question....

is your phone an s off test phone if youve got pre-release software? unfortunately, thats typically how OTAs work. only specific builds will OTA. leaks and pre-release builds often will not.
youll need to manually update to .8
if your s off,you can prolly run the de-crypted ruu,or you could install recovery.
if your s on,and got the phone legitimately, contact vzw and see if they can do anyting for you. otherwise your stuck until an ruu is released,or until you root, install a custom recovery and flash a rom.
Can't you do a factory reset back to the original .8 software version? (It sounded like you went back a version to try to get it unlocked)

no. factory reset only erases user data. it does not restore any firmware or software.
There was a major delay on the Verizon version, they had to open all the phones and relash the software, that's another reason they had a extra month delay. It looks like you are on a old software. Unless you s-off you might be stuck on that that without an ruu to flash

@OP,
If you are not unlocked/rooted, I'd go to Verizon and ask them to give you a NEW phone, not a refurb.

You really think that'd work? I had thought about sending it to Sonic as the only alternative.

I had my first One blow the earpiece speaker (ok, it got dropped ) and I went to several Verizon stores to get try and get a warranty replacement. All of the stores would warranty it no problem but because I was out of the 14 day purchase window, I had to have them ship me one. I got a returned unit, not a refurb that is perfect. They overnighted me the phone but would not replace in-store because of the elapsed time.
So, a heads up to you: You could find a cool rep at the store but be prepared to have one shipped to you. Just find a reason to warranty it (like camera issues or a blown earpiece) and you will probably get a new or returned unit. No refurbs yet.
Or, wait for s-off/send to sonic and load updated, better custom ROMs.

Well actually I'd call the 1-800-922-0204 press #0, then 0, until it asks for you account password, then wait for a rep. then explain your issue, and tell them because of the way the phone is meant to stay together you don't want a refurb not too mention this is not your fault, it's theirs, if you get a crappy rep, hang up and try again.
I called back 4 times once and finally got the nicest lady and solved my issue.
