[Q] Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" official, will developers bring it to Droid Incredible? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

[Q] Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" official, will developers bring it to Droid Incredible?
With Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" finally announced and rolling out to NEXUS ONE users as of today, will the XDA developer community be porting the OS to our Droid Incredible's? I wonder how long it will take HTC to roll out 2.3.
Will we see one?

I also must know. I presume that CyanogenMod will come first and that Sense with 2.3 may take longer to be ported.

If my memory serves me correctly, 2.2 was announced in May and we saw it on Droid Incredible July 31st

don't u think that's a little bit "VERY LATE" news?
It is kinda late and the new Android version will come on the Nexus One first. The HTC Desire needs to wait till next year when it will come tougher with sense 2.0.

I was under impression gingerbread was gettibg rid of sense and other such nasties. So desire owners will have to wait for gingerbread. Surely developers can port nexus obe rom to desire once its released?

The desire had Froyo way before HTC released it 'officially' with Sense UI. We should get Gingerbread as soon as the source is released.
sense roms update is allways delayed by google/htc, thats why nexus one will get update immidiately and desire will get it later.
any way hope we will get gingerbird as soon as it is released.

well. no one know how gingerbread will look. froyo changed how android look and so will gingerbread.
Hearing the Gingerbread name makes me feel tasty. and it sounded very delicious rom to cook by the devs.

Gingerbread ROM on the G2?

I am a noob to these forums and this seemed the best place to ask considering it is a Q&A forum. Considering the G2 is a stock android device how hard would it be to make a stock gingerbread ROM for it? Are any devs out there working on it? Is teamdouche working on CM v7 based on 2.3? I have been looking around for any inclination of this but have seen none whilst other devices get gingerbread ported over/compiled for them. Just want to know the status (or hopefully an ETA) on a Gingerbread ROM for the G2. If I posted this in the wrong place or this has been posted before my apologies.

I don't know if it's out yet, mang... but I'm sure that once it is, it'll be a hot commodity. The modding community is absolutely amazing and I think they seriously need to be hired by some of the mobile companies out there. Their work is fantastic.
well nobody can make a rom or anything until the source code is released...and that hasnt happend yet. as soon as the nexus s comes out (which is this week) then the source code will be extracted from gingerbread and itll be able to be used. right now we just had a SDK file, and that really isnt used for anything but looks. mainly used for themes and such.
Then why does the EVO have a full working ROM for gingerbread? I believe the DESIRE and the HD2 also have it going.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
There isn't a working gingerbread ROM for the EVO, it's just FroYo with some parts ripped from 2.3. Gingerbread will be released in a couple of days along with the Nexus S, after which the AOSP will be ported to existing devices - but it'll still be a few days, if not weeks until something stable comes out.
I wouldn't hold my breath for it.
My apologies for my ignorance. I thought they were actual 2.3 builds considering the XDA posted list says "devices running gingerbread". So absolutly nothing can happen with gingerbread until a device with gingerbread (nexus S) comes out?

Cyanogen will not port it to the G2until 2.3 is released for the G2.

Not a problem, you were just asking
All we have running Gingerbread right now is the android emulator, from which we can pull apk's and libs, but most of them need tweaking to get them to work on FroYo. Plus I don't know if the market works on Gingerbread.

Is that an actual statement from teamdouche/cyanogen or just from studying release behavior in the past? When you say release you mean T-mo pushes it as an OTA correct, I know someone on here will "release" 2.3 long before T-mo stamps it for approval.

So at the moment there is no actual gingerbread (save for the reveiw models floating around phonedog, mobileburn, etc are unboxing) out just froyo with the modified characteristics of gingerbread? Pardon the question if it seems silly, most of the comment went over my head.

I'll bet we have a ported ROM before New Years, usually a huge release like this gets all the attention of the devs. Especially since with perm-root, s-off and several stable 2.2 ROMs, the devs don't have all that much to work on atm.
Team Villain were working on one, but it became clear that there was going to be no way to make Audio work until AOSP is out so its on hold until then.
and without audio a phone is useless, no ringing, no sound in calls, no music etc etc

Highly doubt that's true. I came from a CDMA Hero running CM6 RC1 (Froyo) and as most of us know, the lower end devices (such as the Hero), never got an official 2.2, yet there was a fully functional, highly stable CM6 out for it.
Which ran magnificently BTW.
Ah yeah, those seem to be more like proof of concept. Once a retail version of handsets start coming out with Gingerbread, as well as the source code, I imagine we'll start seeing custom ROMs based off it.

[Q] Gingerbread Sense Development?

I know this has been asked in the past and the answer was no since HTC hadn't released any 2.3 based updates.. but now there has been one outside of N.America, I was curious to know if anyone had taken up the cause for our phone? I know somethings would be missing for our device, but couldn't they be adopted/edited from the HD or froyo Sense Like previous ROMs?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
The answer still would be no.
I was hoping for a more defined answer.. possibly with a little explanation?
We see Roms ported from other devices constantly.. hell that's where half the Roms start.. as a port from another phone.. HD Sense (or new sense depending on Rom) is a port from another phone.. and iirc the phone that got the 2.3 sense was a foreign version of the HTC HD2 which would make it even easier wouldn't it
Edit: see http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-huashan-gingerbread-dump-with-sense/ for more info
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Devs only port roms if there is a massive cry out for them. Also, I more or less read the whole thread and it seems that devs are having trouble with porting it. HD2 is WM 6.5 so it already is completely different. I don't know. Ask a dev why. Just wait till q2 when Desire gets official update.
Sense would have to be re-written to work with 2.3 and it's far too much of a ballache, it's not as simple as taking 2.3 and putting Sense from 2.2 on top of it. Better to wait on the Desire S ROMs to leak and just port it to the Desire
I think you guys are understanding this wrong... THERE IS a gingerbread official release with Sense according to the XDA news story. There is even a full dump of it in that thread.. I was asking if anyone had looked into building a desire Rom based on it.

When you say there should be an update in the next 2-3 days, there is no way HTC will release Gingerbread with Sense 2.3 to the HTC Desire, HD and Z before the Desire S is released in the UK. And after that it will still be some time to let the exclusive features of the new Incredible, Desire S and Wildfire S to take off? Otherwise what would be the point in the new phones, everyone would just wait for a software update right? Personally i'm still running a branded Orange Froyo ROM, the second an official build of Gingerbread with Sense 2.3 is released i'll de-brand and jump on that.

Google announced 2.4 at Google I/O 2011 the other day, but didn't say that 2.4 was Ice Cream. I think 2.4 is just an updated Gingerbread, sort of like 2.0 to 2.1 was still Eclair, and 3.0 to 3.1 is still Honeycomb. I have a feeling Ice Cream will be something more like 3.2 or higher, since it's supposed to be the fusion of Honeycomb and Gingerbread and cover all devices.
That being said, I'm hopeful that Google will cover us with the update, since HTC is one of their 18 partners that promises to give quick OS updates within 18 months of the device releasing, of which the end of this year still would cover us.

Most refs on the 'net state the next version's number to be 3.4. They certainly won't be naming is 2.4 since 2.4<3.0. You simply don't go backwards in versioning.

Yeah, Google will announce the updates. What about the carriers and manufacturers who like to skin their Android builds with buggy-at-best themes like Sense and Blur?

To elaborate a little more on what Gawantu said, at io, Google said they partnered with the manufacturers and carriers, including HTC and Motorola, to bring out updates for up to 18 months after a device is released. But how quickly hasn't been said.
Honestly though, if it took the CM team just 4 months to bring CM7 stable to 20 something devices including a couple tablets, with different hardware, while doing it in their spare time all the while having to reverse engineer and hack their way through it. It shouldn't take any longer for the professional developers at say, HTC, to bring an update to a few that are similarly spec'd and have all the resources to do so even while making a new version of Sense.

So now that we have that super important technicality out of the way, any speculation as to whether or not we'll see ICS as an OTA update? I'm hesitant to assume that we will. I think CM8 is our best hope. Or CMwhatever.
CM9, lol
but HTC is really debating on relasing or not because of something to do with sense and they want to figure out which direction today... best bet is going to have to wait for CM9 like all of us are doing so impatiently haha

Will virtuous sense 2.0.0 be updated in future?

Hey guys,
I'm not allowed to post in the development forum yet. So putting my question here.
I've been using the virtuous sense Rom on my desire z since past couple of months and just love it. No other rom has come close to its smoothness and usability. I wanted to know whether the development on this rom has been stopped or is the team planning to update it anytime soon.
Will really appreciate if someone has any info.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I'm not affiliated with the virtuous team, but I don't think there will be any relevant updates in the foreseeable future. The rom is based on official ota updates for the desire z, similar to g-lite. It's, as I understand it, basically only a stripped down and optimized version of the last ota update, with things such as 4-way reboot options added.
So any future updates first require a new ota update, which I'm unsure if we'll ever see. Since we finally got the gingerbread update and at least as far as I know there haven't been any announcements concerning a possible Sense/ICS update.
Thanks. Well I was kinda hoping they put in some bits and pieces of sense 3.0 or make it even more faster.
