Hi there,
I was porting some VB code, perfectly working in VS 2008 for both Framework and Compact Framework that cannot work in WP7...
Here are some very basic functions that apparently are not part of the new VB assembly (latest RTW bits)
Int
Fix
Hex
Asc
Does anyone outh there where are those missing functions or what to do?
Honestly I caanot understand why they are not available and less how can I replace them!
I think VB has the Convert class. Type Convert. and intellisense should show you the available conversions.
For example Int should be Convert.ToInt32(). Hex should be Convert.ToUint32().
Hope this helps.

Ren13B,
Thanks for your reply. I'll try with that and hopefully will work.
However, if you can help me a little bit more, I do not fully understand the differences between the posted functions. Not very clear, aren't they?
Thanks!

Another interesting issue...
Math.Truncate does NOT exists for WP7 assemblies...
Honestly, why to modify the System.Math class from the previous frameworks?
What issue could be there to leave us our code rendered obsolete?
IMHO, this is a MAJOR bug and/or stepback...

Thanks a lot for that link. Very useful!
Sorry for asking, but given your experience with XML on WP7, please could you check this post?

So far, nobody gave a possible answer...and the issue is still there.
Thanks!

@swtaltima: [HINT] Do you see that blue text underneath his invitation? Try clicking it with your mouse. It's really neat. In the Internet world, it's called a "Link", and it'll make your browser go somewhere else. Maybe ... just maybe, the article he's talking about is there.[/HINT]

@geraldo3: This is a nice attempt, but IMO, it really doesn't talk about WM6. It talks about other apps that can be installed on any WMx OS. It doesn't bring up many of the differences between WM5 and 6, and while it talks about how powerful the OS is, I find you're really not using any of the native apps that it includes (no problem, neither am I), so how "powerful" is THAT?
When you named your device "dopey" (a common synonym for "stupid"), I thought you were going to be detailing how the changes between WM5 and WM6 are only minor ... no real modifications to the OS programs, outside of some very minor aesthetics. No enhancement of the calendar, contacts, pie, task management, basic ui, media player, etc. Many of the "bugs" that were in WM5 still exist in WM6. But your article is mostly complimentary, instead. Left me a bit puzzled.
Yes, IMO, there are many reasons to call WM6 "dopey". The only things I really find are some slight speed improvements, and few UI changes (that some people like and some hate), and, depending on the ROM, a bit more stability. It's the ROM cookers here that have made the OS CONSIDERABLY faster, and have given us back some storage and program space, to boot. IMO, WM6 really should have been called WM5.1.
On an editorial side, you've written pretty well, but you do need to check some of your grammar, sentence structure, etc, if professional writing is your goal. If not, don't worry about it ... you have gotten your points across well enough. One thing you might consider (if you haven't already), is removal of the personal details in your screen shots. The Internet can be a nasty place at times, and you need to be careful (but maybe you made sure all the data shown is false).
Anyway, that's it for my comments. Thanks for sharing!

Good for a Blogger. I would say battery drain comes from SPB and the Radio you are using as you made it sound like wm 6 is the problem.
thanks for the inputs guys really appreciate it.
Hi,
I've been searching for this for some time now, but is there an API (C# and Visual studio preferred) that allows the identification of the GSM-masts that are within my range?
I know it is possible, since google-maps is also able to use this info to determine location.
Probably I'm using the incorrect terminology, since all my search-queries come up empty or with useless info.
Is there someone that has a link/answer/document explaining this in somewhat more detail?
PS: I'm new at this, so be gentle

You can either, create a referrals URL, so that you give this to your friends, and they join via the URL and you get a referral.
Or
When registering (I'm told) there is a field to enter the name of an existing member who referred you to this site.
Dave
I've wondered about that too.
Thanks for clearing it up.

You'd be surprised I tend to be less helpful when I try to be, so maybe I should just flame my way to the big 1000
PS: If you're not too busy, can you mention to the powers that be the idea of having your phone, ROM and radio in your username bar (the thing to the left of each post - don't know what it's called...). It was mentioned in this thread as it went a little off topic in the second page, but it seems to have fizzled out a bit.
I think it would be a very useful idea as a lot of support threads ask for such information and quite a lot of users would rather not keep it in their signatures. It also standardises the layout of such things so you can quickly check which phone/ROM/whatever the user is talking about.
I suppose the issues would arise when someone has more than two or three phones as it would make the posts longer, but even then it wouldn't get so bad until it hit around five devices, as it's just two or three lines for each one. Maybe a drop-down box could be used for the device and we could recommend only including primary devices in that, while keeping older ones for your signature only.

I could have sworn that at one point I'd been able to see who my referred sign-ups were, but I can't for the life of me find it now.
I've got 24, and although that's not a lot I'm a bit stumped as to how!
Is there a way to see who has signed up due to my referrals?

Poo. Ah well, cheers mate
Old thread, but wanted to post the method for creating a referrals URL since Dave's link above did not work..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/register.php?referrerid=4238197 <- replace this number with your user ID number
To find your user ID number, click on your user name in the upper right hand corner and see the new URL change in your location bar. Here is mine. Note the u= on the end.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4238197
Referrals doesn't seem to do anything, but it is nice to know that I inspired someone to join up and hopefully contribute.
Here are the algorithms:
Points Plus = protein/10.94 + carbs/9.17 + fat/3.89 - fiber/12.49
Points Regular = calories/50 + fat/3.89 - fiber/5
can you post printscreen of the others applications ?
just to know if it's only a "basic" formula calc or not
Here ya go mate, here's the old app from 2004:
invalid attachment...
by the way, is it only a calculator ?
OK, this is really rough and ready. My first WM app so be gentle. Just a plain exe file, copy to device and run.
If it works I will try and "tart" it up a wee bit.
Wow, thank you. It works very well. Would you be willing to share your work/source code so i can learn what you did?
Here's a slightly prettier version.
I'll put the code etc up sometime tomorrow, but it basically is four text boxes with a button that converts each to numeric, applies the formula and shows it in the fifth text box.
This is all that I need. Thank you very much for your work.
I can't wait to take a look at the source ^>^
So you have to type this all in, before you can eat it? Or do you need this the calculate a total per day?

I suppose one could do it this way but what I do is write the food i eat down as i eat it, then i calculate all the ponts later.
If i have too many points then i know to get rid of the foods with exessive points for the next day.
My particular goal is to eat well without tracking points - to train my mind to want healthy food choices.
Yup, the initial request was for a calculator to use on an item by item basis, which is what I have done.
The delay in releasing anything is that I got distracted by making it also do the old points scheme as well, which is nearly done. Hope to have a new exe file later tonight.
Are there any differences I should be aware of with regards to US and UK calculations?
OK, here's the latest version.
Does both old and new systems
maybe need to change name
WW are very strick on anything named with Weight Watchers. But this app is so great and I thank you so much.

Interesting hypothesis: Letting users feel free to track the old way and the new way.
Also, the US way to calculate was the formula I gave on the first post.. Not sure what the UK way would be..
Would you still be willing to upload your source for the second and third .exe you created, out of the three you have ? ^>^
EDIT: How about the name WW4WM? Also, I think you should make this 'prettier' and try to get it sponsored by Omarket and XDA Marketplace.
I've created a place for this on SourceForge
Link here.
When I can work out how to post the code there I will do so, in the meantime here's a zip of the entire DotNet tree. Only includes the latest version.
good job.
hope you will not have any probs with WW !
I've begin to do one too, but as you're the first releaser I give you the hand
;-)
i've included a possibility to have an .xml file in which you can add foods with some numbers and you can select this food in a droplist and then all fileds are prefilled.
maybe you can do something like that.
keep up this good job !
Thanks for the support, unfortunately I have sort of reached my developers skill limit for the moment.
Currently trying to work out how to do rounded buttons so the app looks nicer!
I can't wait to try your release too, corwin. I will try it s soon as released.
I plan on learning from your code too, dee.
Thank you both for all your work for my request.
if anyone is interested i'll keep making, but i don't want to steal jobs from deedee !
can you give me some more infos ? like what is in the "options" menu ?
and if you can give me a list of some predefined foods with already some values in "calories", "fat" and "fibers"...

Feel free to carry on, it sounds like your skills are much better than mine. This was my first WM program and so is very "simplistic".
I'd like to see how other things are done as it progresses.
Hi All, I'm a long standing Windows developer who is dipping his toes into mobile development and Android, what is the preferred method of creating a form ( in Windows speak ) to enter / edit data. For example I have a database of contacts and I want to be able to create / edit them in a separate window. I know I can create a separate activity to do the work there but that seems overkill and also if I'm only editing three or four fields it would look ridiculous on a 10 inch tablet. I've looked at alertdialog and DialogFragment but I don't think they are meant for what I'm trying to do.

To be specific, are you asking how to make it look or how to code it?
From what I'm understanding, you're doing a DialogFragment as you've spoken--try customizing it.
Maybe if you mock up what you are trying to do we could give you a better option.

What I'm asking is what class should I use that resembles a Windows form, I'm OK coding ( I do it for a living ) I keep reading about Fragments and the like but can't find an example that doesn't take up the whole screen, is there such an animal in Android ? Maybe I'm looking for something that doesn't exist, thanks for your interest

I would take a stab at an Alert Dialog. It sounds like you just want a new window/modal/form to pop up and have editable characteristics. I believe the alert dialog is the closest you will get without hand coding. You can always fake it by creating an animation that gives the appearance of a form.
Youu can always fake it by creating an animation that gives the appearance of a form.

The most simple way for me to explain would be to point you towards the 2D Graphics section of the Android Developers documentation. This is the best starting point.
