Using Launcher Pro and trying to modify the dock background and icons with custom. This thing is pissing me off and I can't find the answer anywhere.
I know how to add these but the problem is this:
1) No one will ever give an answer on what file formats are compatible with LP....jpg, png, ico, etc
2) I have a lot of graphic files on the root of my sd card. However, when trying to pick a custom one from LP, it opens the crappy HTC gallery app every time (even though I have a better one supposedly set as default in settings) and it only shows some jpg wallpapers. No way to browse or try to find additional graphics that I know for a fact are compatible with LP. If I use my other picture program it shows all the graphics but no way to get them to LP.
How can something that should be so simple be such a pain in my rear? Any suggestions?
Here's what little I know from my own experimentation...
For the dock, you can use .png files for icons.
If you want to use custom icons for your applications, they seem to need to be in .jpg format.
The .png files I have on my phone show up as blank photos in the gallery app, you have to guess which one is which, but they are there.
No doubt somebody else has a better grasp of how to make this work smoothly, but that's what I've found.
I have both jpegs and png files and none of them are showing up in the gallery for some reason, not even as a blank file. Just the wallpapers and have no idea why.
Ok...nm....mounted my phone and removed some pictures, then didn't really do anything else and now they show up in gallery.
Buggy deal but seems fixed now.

Hi - I tried out the 3d gallery but found it rather sluggish, so i'm sticking with the normal htc gallery - problem is that this is quite slow too!
e.g. in grid mode when you scroll you get a load of grey boxes which take a while to fill in with respective thumbnails. even if you scroll down then back up it loses the thumbnails at the top and does this...
anyone else seeing this? the iphone doesn't have this issue in grid mode.
Surely a 1ghz processor should be able to display a thumbnail grid with ease?
i'm using leedroid 1.6 with original sd card (maybe too slow?)
This happens if I take a bunch of new pictures then go to the gallery. It takes a second to render the thumbnails of the new pictures. Once they are though, they usually load pretty fast. It just takes a little bit of time to read the information from the SD card. That's all.
Still shouldnt happen at all - why cant it cache thumbnails on the phone itself?
When you scroll the app drawer for example you dont have to wait for icons to load - it should be the same.
Also if you use the people widget & have a picture for every contact it doesnt struggle when you scroll through them....
I just tried floating image - it doesnt have this issue either - there must be a gridview gallery that works properly?

Well that's the thing, imagine your phone, already with limited space mind, now having to have a cached thumbnail of every picture and video on your SD card. If the space on the phone was limited before it will be even more so.

So how does the people's widget do it? Or the app drawer?
Even the resource intensive floating image app doesn't lag when showing thumbnails.
Surely the sdcard isnt that slow is it? Even if you did do phone based caching - you could probably get 1000 per 10mb...

Surely you don't expect relatively static elements like widgets and the app drawer to behave the same as something that's constantly changing like the pictures on your SD card? What happens when you swap out your card? Should the cached photos remain or be deleted? Then when you put said card back? Re-create all the images again on the fly?
You have to be a little more sensible and think these things through. Simplistic "I wish X happened" is just naive.
You'd be able to check for changes on load - I'm not saying it has to be loading instantly but when it does it should be smooth like any other app. The people app also uses the SD card - if you remove it the images disappear - if that can show smooth image grid then so should the gallery. I don't think that it naive at all. I think even the 3d gallery does this when it eventually loads.

I am dealing with a slow gallery too, after it created ALL thumbnails gallery was still slow to me, so I connected Desire to usb, copied ALL thumbnails to my HDD, optimized all those pics with FastStone and the result?
Gallery deleted all those thumbnails(even though they were exactly same name and content except they were smaller) and cached all over again
Glad to see it isn't just me! Not sure why it is recreating the thumbnails - maybe a reason for it being slow - at any rate it once it has loaded it shouldnt revert back to grey boxes when you scroll up/down...
I've been trying to replace the Gallery app with Just Pictures.
However I use LauncherPro and when using it to change the default icons in the dock, LauncherPro defaults to the Gallery app.
When the Gallery app is not installed, it claims there are no pictures on the phone at all.
Anyone know a solution?
I was wondering about this also... but about Picture Folder, so I've contacted the developer if he could somehow add an option to set default wallpaper or that is shown in this menu, but didn't get an answer.
It's related to the framework of SGS i guess, but i'm pretty sure someone knows something about this and i've already used the search button and couldn't get an answer.
So if maybe somebody knows anything about this, could you please share the info, or at least point us to the right direction
EDIT:
Picture Folder has been updated and is now called QuickPic and it has an option to set wallpaper, but it's still not shown in LP for icon selection...
I switched over to Cyanogenmod, and am looking for a resizable photo frame widget similar to the stock touchwiz one. I am preferably looking for one that does not have any unneeded permissions (Although I can find ways around that if need be)
I would like this because I like to keep a picture of my cat and my best friend on one of my homescreens.

I like it because it allows me to set a certain folder as the album source to have on slideshow.
I checked that one out. One of the permissions concerns me though, namely
READ PHONE STATUS AND IDENTITY
Allows the app to access the phone features of the device. This permission allows the app to determine the phone number and device IDs, whether a call is active, and the remote number connected by a call.
Why would it need this? It seems unwarranted for a Picture Frame to know my phone number and device ID's. I suppose with some sort of Permissions-Denied Esque app I could change this or deny that permission though.
Yea not too sure about that permission, but Ive been using it for a while without any problems
Does it come in multiple sizes. I mean Nova Launcher can resize them and all, but I was just curious if it did. I also found a Gridlike one somewhat like the HTC which needs very few permissions, and thats only for some features on it I will never actually use.
Either way, Permissions Denied can solve this problem
So I whipped up some neat icons for a custom theme I'm working on and found to my horror that Zooper Widget seems to not support importing .png files as static images? Perhaps I'm wrong and this is a bug but if it's not then It's a feature that I highly desire to have, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I looked around for ages to see if there was anyone else who might have mentioned this but I've seen nothing, aside from .svg support.
I do have the paid version of Zooper and do enjoy using it immensely. I loathe having to return to UCCW just to make a couple of folder widgets to use my icons on so if that tells you anything about how much I enjoy Zooper.
----
If nothing else, where do I go from here? I'm using a gradient as a background for my folder bar so the icon images I'm using absolutely have to have transparency and I already exported them all in .png format. I have around 25 and I still have yet to figure out how to load an alpha channel from my transparent background in photoshop (because apparently you can't, you have to manually do it).
Best wishes and thanks for the great app devs! Keep up the hard work!
Png works man...We are using since ages
Must be a bug then.
On my app if I choose "Bitmap: Add a static bitmap from your Device Gallery" and then select the .png image then nothing happens. I've left it there for a few hours to see if it would just load up in time, even rebooted to check and see if that might be a bug as well. No dice either way, just the default folder icon sitting there mocking me.
Is there a size requirement to the images that I wasn't aware of? I was using 640x640 images... which is a little on the large size so if that's it then it's totally my fault. If not then I need to go and find a place to submit a bug report because it's not working properly for anything other than .bmp and .jpg files on my end it seems.
From what I've found you have to select always on the open with dialog, and only gallery. No idea why.

I rooted my phone and the issue appears to have been resolved.
Whether that was due to the rooting or an update I'm not sure. Either ways your solution is extremely helpful. Thank you.
Hi, I was wondering if anybody here could give me some advice. Using my Zooper widget Pro, I made my own template with Bitmaps and all. It works great on my phone so I decided I would share the template and had it uploaded in my google drive so I could just share a download link. Now I did a test run and downloaded the template using my other phone (also has zooper widget pro) and used the template. To my surprise, the bitmaps don't show. They only appear as folder icons. All the other parts of the template such as text and weather icons work fine.
I recently installed google play store and started installing apps and noticed the icons in the fire phone carousel aren't high quality. I read about using APK Icon Editor and tried using it to repack apk's with a higher resolution icon but for one the device selection doesn't even list the fire phone and 2nd i tried repacking apk's a few times by clicking on different icons sizes like 624X624 and installed but still the icon is blurry. I have even re-sized the icon in the program and tried that way and when installed still doesn't work. Does anyone know of a way to do this on the fire phone so Google apps look like they belong on the phone?
I second this request.
blurry icons
Those blurry icons are driving me nuts!! I have playing around with apk icon editor and have been able to get youtube and the playstore to display a high quality icon but now they crash when I try to open them. I chose All Models under the device menu and then the xhdpi (624x624). All the rest don't do anything to the icon in the carousel. It's a start!
That's better than nothing. I'm going to try that too
i hate the low res icons
amazon dev sucks
Have you tried this method?:

I definitely haven't. Interesting. I'm going to try it out. Did you do this and it worked?
No I haven't, but seems to make sense and should work as far as I can tell
