When i go into /system/app, there's a dock.apk. its different than the car dock and it seems installed but i don't see an icon for it.
Is it hidden? Does it only activate when used with official desk dock or am i missing something?

Don't see it on my phone. OOoopppss. It IS something called "Desk Home". But I see it under task manager. USA phone. t-mo.
This nicely transitions into a question I have about these phones which I am hoping someone can answer.
While I do not have a Defy yet (ordering one soon if all goes well), I did have a Droid 2 for awhile. With the Droid 2, there was both a Car Dock and Desk Dock application; however, only the Car Dock had an icon to manually launch it.
Basically, both were setup to launch when the phone sensed a magnet...
(note: I could have this backwards)
The car docking station from Motorola had a positive magnet which would auto-magically launch the Car Dock and their desk docking stations have a positive magnet doing the same but for the Desk Dock.
Big Question: Is that the behavior of the Defy?
Someone should be able to put a small magnet and test this. The flap from a Blackberry case is enough to trigger the event on the Droid 2, so I assume it would be the same with the Defy.
Unfortunately, this just might make the phone a deal breaker with me. Problem comes in when trying to use a pouch with a magnet flap (like most Blackberry pouches). Every time you put the phone in the pouch, the magnet turns on the Desk Dock, which also keeps the screen on, and drains the battery. While there is an app that prevents this (at least for the Droid 2), once you have it installed, there is no longer a method of launching the Desk Dock. This is which unfortunate, as the ability to use a pouch with a magnet instead of velcro or a snap is important to me.
Have just tried this. One polarity of a magnet will open car dock, the other a landscape desk dock. (not sure which is which). The magnet must be placed at the front of the phone just at or below the usb port. So, if your magnetic flap hits there you are screwed
Thanks. That should answer the OP's question and most definitely answers mine (...same as the Droid 2...).
Maybe this short movie will be helpful for you too
uppss... I'm new here, and I cannot post external URL so far - please go to Youtube and
search: Motorola Defy media dock (Build it yourself)
Thanks! It definitely answered my question.

is this apk just exist for that equipment?
I‘m a chinese vegetablebird,my english is bad,I'm sorry for that,if you can't understand what I say,just ignore this message.
Yes, basically yes. That desk dock has a magnet inside which triggers the desk doc app to start (the one with the clock). If you turn that magnet by 180 degrees, the car doc application will start.
You can try with a magnet. I've sticked a HDD magnet on my cheap generic car holder and it works.
Cheers!
FWIW: I use a program called Bettercut for creating shortcuts and under the heading "All activities" it sees the "Desk Home" so you can create a functioning shortcut that loads the Desk Dock -- no magnet needed.

I am trying to find a relatively simple and cheap method to build what could be considered a night stand for my phone, and I am fairly confident that I am not the only one. Is anybody out there looking for ways to build such a device (even in passing)?
A member of the t-mobile forum recently ordered a stand from www.ezestand.com, which they are going to test out. The website mentions that the stand is not compatible with the droid incredible in horizontal mode, though. That seems like an issue that could plague the mytouch as well.
Another option I have been looking at a bit would be to use a business card stand. Something along the lines of the following stand could work...
http://www.amazon.com/Rolodex-Disti...MH/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1294169822&sr=8-13
Because the ends are open, the width of the phone would not be an issue. There is also a small base under the stand, and depending on what it is made out of, one could conceivably run a wire under the stand and cut a hole for the micro usb plug. It would be best to use a right angle micro USB, though.
Simple, cheap, and compatible with any phone.

LOL brilliant
While that is very neat, I don't like the idea of having something permanently on my bedside table that looks like garbage.
For what it's worth, I stopped by office max and they had that exact business card holder that I linked to in stock. It was cheaper there (about 6 bucks), and the bottom is made of a solid piece of some kind of particle board (as opposed to hollow plastic). That makes it a bit trickier, but I can imagine how a right angle micro usb plug could be worked in through the back piece of metal and a little shelf could be put in the bottom to hold the bottom of the phone up.
so i have been thinking of doing a car dock for the mytouch 4g, since I successfully modded the oem desk dock to use the three pins on the side..
well, I have a alpine blackbird navigation I bought awhile back and it had the car dock for it and I was thinking may be I can do something with this since I hardly use or I lost/broke the blackbird...
but I here are pics I took:

I was thinking of switching or joining the mytouch to the alpine dock:?
let me know what you all think?
Interesting idea. From the video I have seen of the official dock (primarily yours), it seems like it is quite a snug fit. I am not sure how you will be able to recreate that, but I bet that dock would work fantastically.
App Launching On Power
Im not sure if the official dock launches apps, but if you want app launching Check Out "powerwifi" from the android market, or you can go here http://sites.google.com/site/scadaguru/power-wifi

Help Us Out
I have been thinking of doing something like this myself as well... I even drew up some quick ideas and made a cardboard prototype...I tried to design it where the angle may be adjusted....idk..
hmmmm
i had a thought about this also. what if we found a case that fit the phone and cut it down to spec, mounted it, then wired it up. i was even thinking about using the case to mold some others so i could make multiple ones that i might like
I was looking through the system dump, and i found in the system/media/audio/ui folder there are two sound files for dock and undock.
My question is are these default 2.3 (gingerbread) files or dose it mean sony are going to release some kind of dock for the arc
There is a dock for the Play, it's either a shared part of the firmware or SE plans to release a dock for the Arc.
Oh ok thanks for the info, hopefully there will be a dock for this phone.

Could be from Android. There are dock and undock sounds on the Nexus One with my original "Google Desktop Dock". It's nice, it uses the friction-less contacts on the bottom. No "insert micro usb"-nonsense.
A dock for the Arc would be possible, a horizontal one that connects to the USB. Probably not from SE, but a third party producer will have one out in no time.
I'm not sure there will be a dock you can just drop the Arc into - the design really doesn't lend itself to being docked.
For example when I use the Arc in landscape mode, I do so with the buttons on the right - and I'd imagine most right-handed people do so as well.
A dock would have the buttons on the left, so 'the wrong way' as it were.

Yeah, but not a deal-breaker. On the N1, I set it up to automatically launch the clock when you connect the charger. It shows the clock with todays weather and goes into a very dim simple clock after a while. Perfect for having on the nightstand. It works in all directions so "the wrong way landscape" won't be that much of an issue.
im hoping theres a dock soon, even a third party one with no special features. Its something ive been missing since I dumped my desire
There are some third party docks on ebay but I bought one before for my x10 and they have no design and just a dock which I found it really crappy.
Yeah, the ones on Ebay now are more holders with a chargecable attached:

im surprised manufacturers havent jumped on it. It would be a similar design as the play but without the 3.5mm stero jack

Uhhh... the micro USB port for charging is on the top right side of the phone and the dock holds the bottom. That means the dock only serves the purpose to hold the phone, but not charing it?

Yeah, as I said: It's a holder with a charge-cable attached. You put the phone in the dock, then take the curly-wire and connect to you phone for charging.
I got this one from www.amazon.co.uk - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0046B7BTM/ref=oss_product
Works really well with the arc naked and also with a hard gel case. Not so well with the soft rubber cases on it though.
Speaking of which I have two gel cases spare, one clear and one black if anyone wants them then PM me.
Mark.
So, I'm still waiting for the official Samsung dock with the functional 3-pins. Until then, this is my temporary solution...
Velcro Brand Removable Picture Hangers have a unidirectional hook which makes removing the phone really easy as you just slide it upwards.
The product comes with the hook side and the loop side. The loop is supposed to go on your wall (car) and the hook is supposed to go on the object you're hanging (picture frame) or in this case, the phone. If you put the hook on the phone though, it's going to catch on your pocket, your jacket, your sweater, etc., so I reversed it and put the loop in my car and the loop on the phone.
The hook can go anywhere. I just put it over my CD player because I never use it.

If you're going to put the hook in the car, make sure you reverse the directions so Velcro is now written upside down and the arrows point down also.
Loop patch on the back of the phone.
Hang it.
Voila
To remove, just slide it straight up. Comes right off.
I've actually been using this solution for about 2 years starting with my Droid X (instead of the official car dock) and later Droid Charge. My brother has it in his WRX, my wife has it in her Outback and I've had it in a Tacoma and most currently, a 328xi.
crap...these images are way too big...
Edit: Fixed
Looks good. However with my car there will be no place for it. I'll keep looking for solutions.

Thanks. Out of curiosity, what kind of car do you have? All you need is a few inches of flat real estate somewhere on the dash within your arms reach.
So does this leave sticky residue on the back of my phone? So everytime I take my phone off and want to make a call everyone will see a huge sticky pad?
Nope, removable silicone adhesive. Won't damage painted drywall either.
not bad at all... I need to figure out something, I'm really shocked that they were able to build such a beautiful phone but can't release a decent dock for either desk or vehicle that easily allows us to charge our phone and plug in a audio cable... They need to get it together and provide some accessories so i can give them more of my money!
I couldn't find a car mount for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I actually liked, so I just threw this together in my shop. I think it's almost done, just gotta grind down the weld points, and repaint. Btw, this setup dosen't require any mod to the car.
(Yes, I know I need to clean the screen).
Okay, It's not letting me put an image code in.

While we are sharing, I was pretty pleased with this setup I built for my car. The US version of the BMW Z4 has a removable cup holder that plugs into the side of the center console. I purchased a spare cup holder from BMW, took it and the Samsung car windshield mount apart, and then screwed a couple brackets onto the cup holder so I could mount the Samsung windshield mount. The cool thing is that the mount is interchangeable with the phone dock and the 10.1 dock, so I can use the same cup holder-based mount for both tablets and my phone and just switch between cradles. I've even found that the LG Nitro HD (which I upgraded to from the Galaxy S2) fits in the same car dock.

(You can actually see in the reflection of the 7" tab that I am taking this photo with the 10.1, and my GS2 is sitting in the little tray in the center console...)
All the mounts I could find were.........I don't know how to describe it. I wanted something set in the same area of my stereo so I could skip songs, etc. I ended up building an all steel setup that would fit in most cars, that will hold most full size tablets.
I'm just gonna put the pics in my album on here.
Yours looks awsome, btw.

It's not clear from your pictures how did you attached it to the car.
The "legs" on the side of the frame extended down to both sides of the console, and the leg on the right has and adjustable screw piece to adjust the size abit. It also has a little 2 sided tape on the back of the frame to keep it from flying toward you.(yes, that happened once, the car is a Challenger RT, so it's got a bit of take off speed).
I'm a long time lurker on XDA and appreciate all the work the developers have done on all the great ROMs. I recently dropped my SGS II and decided to replace it with a GSM Galaxy Nexus and must say I love it.
My son decided to use the damaged SGS II and no longer needed his Nexus S. I noticed the desktop dock he had looked close to the curvature of the GNex. The micro USB connector was about an 1/8" low and needed to move back about the same. I went to work on dis-assembling the dock to make the modifications. Below I have a few pics but I didn't document the actual mod process, if there are any questions let me know.
The back cover of the dock will pull off with work and there are a few screws holding everything together. Once these are removed the dock will pop apart at the seam on the front of the dock. Modding the micro USB is actually pretty easy. A larger opening will be needed to move the connection towards the back and top of the dock.
The GNex will fit in the dock without any other modifications but there will be a small gap between the dock and the phone on the connector side. I wanted a more factory look and decided to thin the plastic a little so the GNex would fit snuggly next to the dock with no gaps. I did this with a fin grit sand paper and a buffing wheel on a dremel tool.
These docks can be found as cheap as $5.00 on Amazon. I purchased this dock at Best Buy for $20.
Hope these help explain what I did.

Shot of how nicely the GNex fits in the dock.
You can see that the phone is charging in the dock.
Modded the opening for the micro USB connector.
A little more sanding and the dock would look factory.
These were taken with the phone while working on the dock.
The bracket at the top holds the micro USB connector in place. A few mods were needed to make it fit the GNex.
Nice!
i just ordered one of these docks from amazon for 7 bucks used. hopefully i can mod it successfully so i can dock my galaxy nexus like u did. very good job though modding it.
Edit: I screwed up my dock bad so it no longer works lol. Oh well. Now I know why I don't do stuff myself lol. Plus I didn't have the drill thing u had.
