[Q] Trobs: Won't Load ROM/ PC Won't Recognize - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long time lurker, first time I found myself with a problem I couldn’t just search the site to fix. I’m trying to flash a new ROM/ hard reset but encountering a couple of problems.
First, my computer refuses to recognize my Evo. Whenever I plug it in, as Disk drive, Charge Only, or HBOOT USB, I get a “device not recognized message.”
Second, and more significant, but not unrelated, I’m having no luck flashing a new ROM. I want to install RUU_SuperSonic_3.29.651.5_OTA_Rooted_Deodexed_baap786.zip. I saved it to the root of my SD card as pc36img.zip.
So far, I did a hard reset from within the Evo, which was successful and rerooted, but, since my computer won’t recognize the Evo, I can’t reroot using unrevoked in order to install Titanium and restore everything back, which isn’t acceptable.
So, I Volume Down+ Power boot, and it says that it is loading [PC36IMG.zip] with a bar up the side, but doesn’t load the new ROM. When I select Recovery, it reboots and then goes to a screen with Andy and a red triangle and an exclamation point that goes away with a battery pull.
My menu looks like this:
SUPERSONTIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT 0.97.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.09.01

Any suggestions for either of these problems? If I could get my PC to recognize my Evo, I wouldn’t worry about loading the ROM I want because I could re-root and restore from there, but ideally I’d like to fix both problems.

Wow, not everyone at once. Well, I think I figured out that I need to be rooted in order to load a ZIP recovery.
Unfortunately, I hven't had any luck at getting a PC to recognize the Evo. I tried with 2 PCs and two different Micro SD cards with no luck, so I took it Sprint and the idiot there said he was able to get it to work by enabling USB Debug, but I took my cable into the adjacent Best Buy and tried it on their PCs and it wouldn't recognize my Evo.
I'm gonna try again with a competent tech.

If you have s-off you should be currently rooted. Try using an sd card adapter to get around your connection issues for now. What is your overall goal here? To flash a stock rooted rom?

USB error, cant do nothing with it

This is a strange problem, I cant tell when it started but it did all of a sudden. When I try to connect my phone to my computer it all of a sudden does not recognize the device (it shows under USB in device manager as unknown device). This happens on my laptop and stationary one (XP and Windows Home Server). On my work computer and my girlfriends laptop (Windows vista) nothing happens at all. The only thing happens is my phone shows notification about HTC Sync (doesnt show the "mount SD card" option). I cant install modaco 2.x since it says it isnt signed when I try to run update.zip from "home+power" mode.
Anyone knows a solution? I really want to flash either modaco or the official HTC rom.

have you instaled HTC Sync + the Android SDK? Drivers are included, also ensure you have gone to settings > Application Settings > Development.. and selected USB Debugging in the handset
if you have done the above you should be able to...
Sync your device
Do a nandroid backup
Root your device
and flash, flash, flash
hope this helps
Thing is, all those stuff is checked. The strangest thing is that the phone doesnt even ask me if I want to mount the SD card (to make the phone like a card reader). I successfully flashed the generic rom again (so my phone is not rooted etc etc) but it still cant connect to any computer through USB (except from when in bootloader (back+power). Its really starting to bugging me since I cant transfer music to the phone anymore I tried a hard-reset, flashed a generic rom (the new one) and formatted the SD card (the phone can read and write to/from it without problems).
I've got the same problem for quite some time now and still no answers...! :-(
It seems very few people on these boards know of our exact problem and i've never seen a solution. Also not from the many people on these boards I consider guru's. :-(
I'm at a total loss here...
I will call HTC Sweden today and see if they can help me solve this issue. I will get back to this thread as soon as Ive been speaking to them. This is starting to really bugging me.
First of all, I would try reformatting your SD card on the phone itself via Menu-> SD card & Phone Storage. If you need anything on the card, you'll have to stick the SD card in adaptor and attach it to your PC directly.
Secondly, by the sounds of it you haven't flashed Cyanogens recovery image, or your HBOOT is wrong, if you are getting a problem with the signature on Modacos image. Either flash Cyanogen recovery, or follow the instructions found on another thread for restoring your HBOOT to an earlier version.
Regards,
Dave

I have tried to format the SD card already, didnt help.
What would the hboot have to do with the SD card mounting? I got the original hboot .0004 or somehting like that (never touched it).
This is the complete infor from my HBOOT screen (power+back).

Should I update something? And how would that help me get USB connection to work outside fastboot? Since its only working in fastboot and not in the android system itself?
Answer from HTC:
If you are getting the 'USB Device not recognized' error in XP, then your device has a faulty USB port. You need to call our repair line to gte it booked in for repair. That really is all there is, once the hardware dies and starts giving that error, there generally is no hope apart from replacing the USB socket or the whole motherboard. best regards, HTC Europe Support
Would have been nice if they could include in this message where I should turn etc?
I had the same error when I flashed my unit with wrong radio image (newer version) without flashing system and boot images. Then I reflashed those as well and everything worked ok.

Is there any update.zip containing all those updates? and would it void my warranty? ex, would HTC be able to see any difference to the hboot etc?
Any guide you could point me to on how to update all those things?
See the following threads with people who have the same problems:

[Fixed]No SD card and no USB access - How to recover?

I have a new Evo and it came with the latest radio installed. Because of that I did the unrevoked3 root process. While trying to get Fresh Evo in place I have really knackered this phone.
After it has booted it no longer sees the SD card. It also doesn't charge over USB unless I have it plugged into a wall socket. The PC doesn't detect the phone at all.
I've tried other SD cards and it doesn't fix the problem. I have also tried other Android phones and cables and it is only this phone that no longer works.
Any suggestions on how to recover? Any recovery that requires that I go into recovery will not work. (Did I mention that I can boot into hboot, etc, but not recovery?) Anything that might try to use USB won't work either. I can put a PC36IMG type file in place and fastboot will scan it. However the few I've tried haven't got me anywhere.
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
I lost my SD and USB after I rooted, but that got me back on track
Success! Or at least in part.
Thanks mistersquirrle.
The USB still doesn't work but I'll try it again and see if that fixes things. These things often take a few tries...

I think that my USB took more than one try, not sure. Glad I could help though, I keep that link on my bookmarks, just incase
BTW, edit the post if you can and put [FIXED] if you get it all good, so it's not misleading
I did it a couple more times and it finally took. Thanks!

Problem with computer not recognizing phone properly

Here's the issue for me. My computer is not recognizing my properly, or it could be the only way around. The phone only charges, and is never picked up as a usb disk drive. I have confirmed that it's a problem with my phone itself, as my friend's EVO 4G, hooked up to my computer using the same cable, connects and is recognized as a disk drive just fine. We tried swapping out microSD cards to see if it could be something with that, and his phone was still picked up fine with my microSD in it. I think my phone may be partially rooted.
I tried SimpleRoot 1.47.651.1 on my phone at my friend's house a few days ago (4-click method), and for some reason, it never completed. His computer would pick up my phone as a disk drive perfectly fine, but on the last step (reboot and scan) it would never finish, even after letting it sit for a few hours; step 3 was saying something about not being able to identify the correct cache from the browser or something like that. I'm thinking that the partial root may've flubbed up the phone?
Right now, I'm trying to look up which root method my friend tried to work on my phone. It involved PC36IMG.zip and an update named s-u-*something*. I'm still new to the EVO, not like the Droid. Anyway, that root method failed for some reason (no errors in HBOOT, but never asked if I wanted to reboot). I've tried to factory reset, and nothing. I got my phone sitting here while I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what to do. I'm well-versed in ADB, but if my computer can't pick up my phone properly, it's all for naught. Anyone have any ideas to get me on the right foot? I can still pop out the microSD and put it into the computer directly, too. Sorry for the tl;dr candidate.
Quick update/bump.
I upgraded my phone to OTA Froyo, and now USB debugging shows up, but I don't get the "Connect to PC" menu still. Is this phone fubared?
HTC Sync not recognizing phone
I was having the same problem with 2 Evos. The phone would accept a charge from the USB port and the computer would even install the driver sometimes. Then nothing. I tried again last night after I pulled the 2.2 update and it worked! I think HTC might not have had Windows 7 Starter edition covered until this update.
Here's the thing, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I'm having this problem on 2 EVOs, also. I've updated them both to stock 2.2 OTA, and still nothing. =/
I did just read on here somewhere that a fix was to delete the drivers for the phone and sd card and reinstall them.

[Q] No hboot usb plug via bootloader, or via OS under windows. Rooted.

Rooted about 10 days back. Unrevoked 3.32. Has been working fine.
Was trying to do appinventor. I couldn't get it to detect under PC. Then tried to see it just as an E:\ drive. Tried USB debugging setting both checked and unchecked. "Connect to pc" set to disk and to ask on each connect.
So tried the drivers again,
Tried HTC sync 2.40,
Tried the 3.0 even though it's for other versions of HTC phones.
Tried the Hboot android custom driver which worked the 1st time. Made sure to remove drivers from prior installs with pnputil -f -d. Still won't detect and show up as a mass storage device.
Tried freezing sd related apps and re-enabling the sprint apps that I'd frozen. Disabled no-lock, watchdog, juice defender and app2sd in case they had an effect.
Still not working on usb.
So drop into bootloader. Hboot 2.10, S-off
I go into to bootloader both via quickboot or via power/vol down. On hboot after the flicker of checks it goes to hboot usb, but never shows hboot usb plug.
I've tried 2 cables, Different ports. 30 second battery pull.
Do have a 1st nandroid.
Stock rom, removed sprint apps via titanium backup pro. Have a copy of the applist saved. Have a few titanium backups.
I do have a question before I start down the path of hard resets, factory resets, titanium restores, app restores or unrooting .I'd suspect OS is confused somewhere since it charges on usb. But it doesn't detect usb either in bootloader?
Could it be a bad evo usb plug? I've read about this as an Evo issue. It charges but never connects. Another unrooted evo in the house does show as a mass storage device using these same cables.
Do I restore, reset etc?
Do I unroot via the sdcard and go see sprint? I downloaded pc36img for the 3.70.651 that I could restore via clockworkmod.
I did see some references to copying flash_image to fix usb that won't detect.
What have I left out?
Now realize I may have USB-Brick condition.
Will start reading that trail tomorrow.
This sounds very similar to a problem i had a while back. I rooted, put on a fresh ROM, and then i wanted to update my radios. So i flash the radios, reboot and it gets stuck at the htc screen. I pull the battery and put it back in and now the phone is stuck in a permanent boot loop and even worse its not being detected by usb. So my only option was hboot, in which my battery died while researching the problem. Now the phone wont do anything, so i had to order a spare battery charger from amazon. Which took 5 days!....So i get my battery charged...i put my sdcard in my digital picture frame to access my sdcard and flashed my radios and ROM by renaming them to PC36IMG.zip......Put the sdcard back in phone, fired it up in hboot, flashed the two zips separately and my usb worked again
this could of been something wierd with my hard reset and could have nothing to do with the radios but its worth a shot.

Do I have a bricked usb card?...HELP!!!!!

Hi all...bare with me here, I posted this earlier, but in the wrong forum section so I am going to start over here.....thanks for your patience....
Hi everyone...I have a problem..I tried to use the Firerat zips to increase my internal storage, and during the flash of the zip file the phone hung and I had to pull the battery out.....since then the usb wont mount.
I am using a Tmobile mytouch slide 3g.
I tried using the sdk and running the fastboot commands etc to get the sd card to mount...no go.
I have tried the fastboot oem enableqxdm 0 command and no go....
Note:..My sd card works fine in a card reader on my computer, I can drag and drop anything to it etc. etc.
Finally i downloaded the stock rom, and i was able to put it on the card, and rename it ESPRIMG.zip and installed it through recovery...My phone was rooted and S-off running ginger, but now back to stock...S-on, and hating the phone now...lol.....
I have been all over the web and I am so confused...everywhere you search there is something different, I just dont know what to do, Windows doesnt recognize the phone when plugged in so I cant load custom rom etc back on....AARGH!!!..I am so frustrated, and have a migraine messing with this damn thing.....lol...
Someone here suggested the MISC is bad and that a binary flash_img would fix it, but honestly, I have no idea what any of that means...all that means to me is confusion, and I have that already.....lol
Can someone please suggest what I may try doing?I am pretty savvy with computers but some of the adb/shell stuff is very confusing to me, I dont like cmd prompts...so maybe a detailed explanation?..
Thank you so much for taking your time to read my problem, I really appreciate it very much.....Dirtylarry
"Kharma...It's a good thing"
ok man im gonna try to understand the problem... you say your usb mount doesnt work but the sdcard works with the adapter, then you went back to stock and un-rooted and the pc doesnt recognize your phone? right?
So it looks to me (just an idea) that the problem is your cable or the port on your pc... just beacuse your sdcard IS working in your phone as well since you used the ESPRIMG.zip(wich was really unnecessary) and you flashed it using the sdcard obviously.
Now you need to find a way to root it again just like you did the first time... dont mess with the drivers since you havent changed them in your pc (i guess) and try this guide....
http://richard.gluga.com/2010/08/complete-guide-to-rooting-and-hacking.html
Now all i can say is ALWAYS DO A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE MESSING WITH YOUR PHONE. And check the cable/ports... thats the only problem i can think of...
well the fact that I have 3 computers that all used to recoginize the phone just fine is what's weird....none of them do, nor does my usb connection on my car stereo...the computers all say "USb not recognized" etc. etc. and the car stereo says USB N/A .......So i'm just at a loss as to what is going on here....Any ideas????? Thanks much ....Dirtylarry
Try installing PDA Net. It installs USB Drivers and resets the registry. One day it would work, then the next day it didn't work, reinstalling PDA Net worked every time.
Thanks Wave_Sailor, I tried the pda net install but it wont work....Everytime I try it says that it can't handshake to the phone, and then gives me an error code 103, I have tried many many times....also, in the device manager for computer it shows a yellow Exclamation mark everytime I plug the phone in listed at "Other Devices", and says Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM....So I googled, and found another thread saying Install Windows mobile 6 center, so I did, and nothing changed.......ARGH....DIrtylarry
Do part III, but while the phone is unplugged, download and install HTC Sync, and then plug the phone back in.

Ok...I did EXACTLY what you have suggested, and in the driver information box this is what I got after the install....
USB Composite device installed successfully
USB Mass Storage Device Failed
Mytouch slide tmobil installed successful
Still a no go on the Mass storage device......hmmm.....so weird of a problem to have....I would have thought that clearing everything on the phone and going back to stock would have done the trick......any more ideas?...Thanks so much for your help.....Dirty
Have you checked in device manager on your computer to see if the mass storage device has a yellow triangle? I just went through the same thing but in reverse. My pc would see the sd card while in my phone but not through the reader. I still haven't gotten it straightened out either, just learned to live with it.

Make sure you don't have any drivers disabled. Ran into that problem with a different phone. I had one driver disabled so it wouldn't install some of the other drivers.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using Tapatalk
Ok...just checked,...no drivers disabled in device manager...has to be something wrong with phone...its a/most like the driver is missing from within the phone or something...isn't there some way to get this back to where I could root it and install a custom rom again without the USB to phone connectivity and use my card reader to get some sort of files back onto phone that way?
ok....well I re-did the whole flash process over, and I am now rooted again once more.....I dont know how or why or what...but I am now going strong again.....lol thanks for the help everyone,
