Hi every one - I am new to "root" and I have been searching for an "easy for me" way to "root" my EVO. I am not new to technology. I have taught my self how to write HTML for my gaming web site, I have designed dozens of PSP/PS3 themes, I even have 2 PSP's that run home brew on them. I'm not computer illiterate, but I am also not "l33t" either
I have been searching between a few differant forums, and have been spending most of my energy researching XDA forums and wiki's... I have found several helpful threads regarding how to "Root" my EVO, but I gotta be honest - I'm still confused on some things.
I watched EvoGamer's 3 part video on youtube several times on how to "root" my EVO using "Simple Root" and it seems simple enough (just as simple as most of the threads I have read here), but I get lost when it comes to flashing custom ROMs and this other thing about "flashing the radio"...he didnt say any thing about that in his videos... :/
1. What is all this I hear about "Flashing the Radio" I know that the EVO has 4G, 3G & wifi "radios" as they are called in the manual or antennas as I have read some of the members here call them... Which "radio" is not flashed or needs to be flashed?. Is it absolutly neccessary to "flash the radio" on every ROM or just a few that have differant ROMs? And last if I use one of the methods on here to "root" - does the flashing of the radio already happen or is it some thing I will have to do after "root"??
2. If I have a "rooted" phone and try and use the OTA update (lets say, for the sake of argument, when the next froyo update comes out) from Sprint - Will it Un-root my phone? (Just for my info) IS IT even possible to get the Over The Air Update thru the EVO when your phone is rooted? (I saw Toast said NOT to accept an OTA update from sprint because you could loose root forever...and ever)
3. I have read that some ROMs do not have 4G, is this true with ALL current ROMs as of right now? Are there any ROMs that have 4G?
4. I have read several threads on backing up your phone... Do you do this BEFORE or AFTER you have it rooted? Will all my apps still be on my phone after I root it? (i think they will be but just making sure I get the correct answer) What about pictures/videos/contacts?? (I know the data will more than likely be gone since you wipe the phone during the root process - again, just trying to get some understanding here...)
5. How do I back up the phone? How do I back up EVERYTHING?? Can I just use a blank SD card to copy the entire contents from the first card and then use that Copied SD card to do my root files and what not? Would that be too confusing? Can I just use Windows **** Tools on my PC to back up the SD card?? or is that not the same thing?
6. What exactly is a Kernel and what are the benefits in changing it? I know I can probably seach this, but I figured I would just throw it in as a last minute thought...
I have already downloaded eveything needed to get my phone rooted, but it always seems like the methods are differant. I know how to get into recovery mode and i have installed SDK and the drivers... but I also noticed there are methods that do not ask for SDK or SYNC for that matter... confused there... which one should I use? Any preferances?
I know these are pretty dumb questions to most of you reading it. I am obviously a noob to rooting... and believe me - If there was a place that I could just type in these questions to get strait answers - I would. There are entirly TOO many damn threads on how to do ONE thing here... I have used the search for several days and all I seem to do is confuse my self... Any help on any of these questions would be greatly appriciated.

toast method is great but its outdated i'll get back to you on a more updated version for your hboot. I know you don't want to us unrevoked cause you want to learn to do it the long way so i'll see what i can dig up
Very cool... looking forward to it!! Really want to just take the jump and root my phone already, but at the same time, I want to learn it as well. I have a few friends who also have EVO's and they will probably want me to root them as well. So ill get lots of practice...
Any luck?

So far no not for anything below 2.02 everyone is saying use unrevoked I guess toast's it is
Sent from my EVO at the edge of hell
if you are on the newest hboot (2.02)(which btw is achieved by vol DOWN and power) then i will DEFINATELY reccomend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
if you have the old hboot, i will reccomend a mish-mosh method i sorta stumbled upon. flash the misc with toast's mtd-eng.img to downgrade to software 1.47. from there use the adobe flash lite exploit. then i think you downgrade agian, to release date software, and root easily from there, before upgrading again. there are probably more efficiant methods than this. i just havent found them yet. maybe try going directly from the flash exploit to toast's part 2???
Thanks, for my phone, hboot is volume UP and power... So should I wait to root or what? I dont get it... What is the version you are talking about? Android Froyo? Or what?
Sent from the MATRIX... while plugged into my EVO... using the XDA app... from a galaxy far-far away.......
wow, i have never heard of hboot being vol up and power. the version we are talking about is 3.30.651.2 and 3.30.651.3. these are both froyo. htc incorperated much more security to rooting into the new hboot. the hboot is 2.02. nand lock (s) can be turned off (s-off) but it is harder to do, and downgrading hboot to an engineering build (different from rooting) is dangerous and has a high probability of bricking.
Every video/forum I have read/watched says vol up/power... Go to you tube...or google it... It all over... I guess I'll wait to root...

ever actually tried it? in the origonal software that got u into recovery, but not anynmore. 3-vibrations now mostly. u r special if it does do something
Not trying to a smarta$$ but yes I have tried it, not only tried it but did it, how do you think I got the info off the hboot screen to post into this forum?? lol

Ok... I stand corrected, kinda! Holding Vol down + power takes you to "hboot"... Holding vol UP + power takes you to "fastboot" which you can also access hboot from... Try them both, youll see what I am talking about... Sorry for the confusion...

1) a radio is the radios the they put out for the phone different radios work diffident for your phone in different areas. a new radio does not have to be flashed it is optional. new rom do not affect your radio.
2)i have never received an ota updates while rooted but most of the roms you will find are out with the ota updates as soon as or before they are sent ota
3)that is true some do not work with 4G to find out witch ones don't you have to look in the opening post and it should be listed there.
4) when root is achieved and a recovery image is flash you will be able to back up your phone. it will back up everything . it is a good idea to get in the habit of backing up your phone before you make any changes like new roms, themes, or any mods.after root your apps will most like be going after root, in some cases if you go directly into the market the will show up under your downloaded apps and you can re download them from there. after root you can download titanum backup from the market and it will backup your apps for you so you can use it to get your apps back after flashing a new rom
5)your sd card should not be touched in the process. if you want to back up your sdcard easiest thing to do is just copy everything on to your computer this will not back up your phone only sdcard files
6) a kernel is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. The kernel's responsibilities include managing the system's resources (the communication between hardware and software components) flash different kernels give you different operating speeds, better battery life, overclock, and more
well, i guess all that's worked out. does it take you to fastboot? i will need to try that. seems helpful. dont have to wait for all that sd scanning and stuff.

Yes, when I held vol. Down + power at the same time it took me to hboot with an option to go to fastboot...then when I selected fastboot, it took me to tha same screen that I get when I hit vol up + power...cool lil shortcut I suppose... Im still trying to figure out if I can even root my phone with the firmware I have... Im running 2.2 froyo but some thing keeps being said about my 3.29 software... Or what ever...

Sorry to jump in, I have been following this thread since it seemed to be the most similar to my situation and had been pretty much the most informative. I was just curious to know can this phone be rooted with the currently 2.2 android and 3.29 software. I have Identical stats and would like to get a understanding. I read and read and there are so many versions floating around its hard to get a grasp.

Hi, Well I'm trying to finally root my EVO before updating to 2.2 and put a custom ROM on. I can't seem to get past the first part. After entering the bootloader, it checks PC36img.zip...I'm not given the option to flash, immediately after it checks it I am prompted with the following:
Main Version is older?
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<Vol UP> Yes
<Vol Down> No
I even tried the simplerootfull.2 and got the same error. Can anyone point me in the right direction...would really like to get this rooted and a Non-Sense 2.2 ROM on it. Thanks.

Your answer is in the Answer Forum.
I can't get anywhere with this damn thing....I've flashed my devices a million times before and this is just buggin the **** out of me. Heck, I got froyo on my HD2 in 30 minutes. This is just not going anywhere!!!
Tried the resolution to the Main Version is Older, and I can't even get the RUU to flash to the phone. It doesn't see it when connected to my computer and errors out, nothing happens on the phone. Tried while connected to HTC Sync, Disk Drive, Charge Only with Debug enabled. RUU won't work.
It's just irritating I can't get anywhere with this POS.

You got main older version because the PC36IMG is a older hboot for 2.1 (hboot 0.79.000). You got now 2.2 and the hboot is 0.93.000
Try flash the 3.26.651.6 stock root posted to see if work for you
I'm still on 2.1, I haven't accepted the update to Foryo 2.2

Does what you say still apply...I'm just lost, which I very unusual, I'm an engineer and ususally get this right off the bat, but this is just not going well. I just want to get it rooted and get a nice Froyo 2.2 without sense build on it. Thanks.

I have the same issue, I used the unrevoked download just the root part, I didn't do anything else and my evo is rooted but I tried other methods because I didn't know if it was rooted, my friend downloaded a few apps and we found out my evo was rooted, it was a trip, we still haven't found out how to get pass the old version stuff, just try the unrevoked download, just hit start and your done. Your evo won't be fully rooted but you will have root access. Try it

Guys if this doesn't work for you nothing will. Seriously, slow way down, read very carefully and this will take a whole 7 minutes to accomplish. If you don't want to use the computer to enter adb shell just download terminal emulator from the market and enter the commands through that. easy cheesy. OP feel free to send me a PM if you need additional help, ill try to answer back in a timely manner
I'm just gonna wait until 2.2 is rooted and all the bugs are fixed, I'm happy with this unrevoked root, but I will read it

simple root also just came out with a one click root, i have used it on friends phones with excellent success, takes maybe 10 minutes total. Probably teither of the above methods will be MUCH easier than a froyo root ... but who knows, good luck whichever method you decide to go with
i did download that, and that took many moons to download haha, well i did try to run it but i got the old version crap,
but then i that realized i was rooted!! i just unrooted, i think i just did haha i had to run the ruu 1.47 and it was quick
I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

So if I follow the method you posted earlier, I'll have stock 2.2?

Ok I will check those out. Thanks
And thanks spalding for starting this thread. I think it helped me in my decision to root!

No problem! I'm glad it wasn't a waste of time for people! By the way, wifi tether works like a champ! not sure if I can post the how to for that on here or not, so I will leave it up to a senior/admin to post if it's allowed.
Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.

Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.
I downloaded unrevoked 3 ive rooted mine and my girlfriends phone with no issues. However we have had our evos since the 1st day they came out. Will unrevoked work for 3.3 on the evo? If not is there a simple way someone who isnt to good with computers like myself can root these phones?

If your HBOOT version is 2.02 or 2.10, then no, unrevoked will not work.
From what I am reading... if you say you got your EVO from day 1, I assume that is June 4th, all EVOs from that date are from 0.87 HBOOT so yes, unrevoked would work for you.
Check your HBOOT version just in case.

I think what you want to know, is how to update to a 3.30.651.3 rom and keep root?
If that is what you are asking, then yes, you can look for one like in this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836728
You can download it and follow the directions, its easy. You should already be rooted, so if you install a rooted rom you should be OK.
If you are still on 3.29, make sure that you have S-OFF and ran Unrevoked Forever.
BASICALLY YES I BOUGHT MY EVOS THE 1ST FRIDAY THEY CAME OUT JUNE 4TH I BELIEVE. IVE NEVER DID ANYTHING TO IT EXCEPTH DOWNLOAD UPDATES SENT BY SPRINT. I FPUND OUT ABOUT ROOTING FOR FREE WIFI. DOWNLOADED UNREVOKED. DOWNLOADED THE ANDROID DRIVERS I GUESS BC IM USING WINDOWS 7 I NEEDED THEM. PLUGGED MINE AND MY GFS PHONE IN AND BAM! UNREVOKED HAD ME ROOTED IN MINUTES. SO I START GETTING A LITTLE COCKY AND GET ON THIS FORUM AND SEE IM WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE. IM TRYING MY BEST TO SOAK IN AS MUCH INFO BY READING ALOT OF THE INFO IN THE Q&A FORUMS. NOT EXZACTLY SURE WHAT FLASHING ROM IS NOT SURE WHAT A KERNEL IS. FROM READING WHAT EVERYONE ON HERE IS DOING IAM WAYYYY BEHIND THE EIGHTBALL LOL. SO WHATS A EASY WAY FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME TO ROOT THE NEW EVOS. WILL UNREVOKED WORK? ALSO WHAT DO YOU RECCOMEND SOMEONE LIKE ME DO TO AN EVO THAT HASNT REALLY BEEN MODIFIED EXCEPT UNREVOKED?

I'm not entirely sure what you are really asking because if you already obtained root, why would you need to root it again?
No i havent lost root. My phone is rooted. My friends have the new evo with the 3.3 software. Before i tell em to drive up to baltimore from richmond i wanna make sure it will work. Thre reason i posted the info about my phone is i guess it would just be useful for people to see what exzactly i have and would need

So this spec is his phone or yours? If this is his phone, then you can use unrevoked3 (I assume since the build is 3.29, the HBOOT is 0.97 or so).
No this is my phone
He just bought his from radioshack 4 days ago so im assuming he has all the newest software. Also thanks for explaining the difference in unrevoked 3 and forever on my other thread. Im assuming i need to save any info on my phone before running unrevoked forever. Sorry to be bouncing around so much but im just so anxious to learn so heres 2 questions
1) when flashing roms, is unrevoked 3 a tool i can use. Can i just click custom then select the rom i want to flash?
2) for my buddys phone, what is the simplest way to root his phone since unrevoked will not work. Im reading the tjread everyone is referring to as 'like a boss" but its not making much sense
1. I assume from you asking about unrevoked forever, you are still S-ON and trying to get S-OFF? When you ran unrevoked3, it should've installed a custom recovery (ClockworkMOD is what unrevoked uses I believe). That's where you flash unrevoked forever and any custom ROMs later (the files need to be on the root of your SDcard - meaning not in any folders).
To get to recovery: power off, then when you turn it back on, hold down VOL DOWN and POWER and that will put you into bootloader. It may attempt to locate PC36IMG.zip/etc files but you prob won't have them which is fine, after that, select Recovery and hit Power and you should be booting into recovery.
If you can, I would suggest doing a nandroid backup of your phone so in case anything does get messed up while flashing, you can restore back. To do this, go to backup or something like that (sorry, I use Amon_RA's recovery so the wording is most likely different). Once you are backed up, go to 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard', and then pick the file you want to flash. After that, reboot and you should be good to go.
Some custom ROMs require you to do a full wipe (data/cache/dalvik-cache - wipe each one twice) before you flash, so to do that you go to recovery and choose the wipe option. Stuff like radios, kernels, themes, you only need to wipe the cache and dalvik-cache.
2. As for your buddy's phone....I am not too familiar with the new EVO root methods but I think the "like a boss" edition which is now updated to "Yea, I'm On Top" edition seems to be the new way to root the new EVOs until unrevoked or someone else comes out with another way. You can check out these threads to get a better understand and post in them too if you have any questions and the guys with experience when those methods should be able to help. Sorry, I can't be of too much help here.

After having looked at the EVO threads for the last 3 days, I cannot figure out how to root my friends Evo. I have an Epic 4G and have previously worked upon the Incredible and HTC Hero. I have never had any issues rooting and or installing CWM or custom ROMs. I am beginning to think the Evo is a POS but I know that not to be true. Maybe I am just becoming frustrated with trying numerous methods including xHausx’s auto root method and having nothing work. Currently SetCPU is working with root rights but no other application that needs root rights including ROM manager will work. I can’t even install Clockwork Mod let alone find the correct thread so that I can install it. Next, there are no backups for this phone and my friend never backed up his RSA or Wimax keys. Basically, here is where the phones stands as of now… can anyone tell step by step of how to get back to stock 2.2 aka Froyo with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G working?

Not sure what you've been reading, but I had no problems rooting following this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
It is more involved than any of the 'auto' methods, but you also learn a great deal along the way.
What have you tried and what issues have you run into?
At this point, it may be a good idea to run RUU to bring it back to 100% stock before trying the method above.
what happened when you tried unrevoked or did you try that method?
From my understanding CWM sucks (sorry koush). Get Amon-Ra for recovery.
Can't think of a witty tag line. . . Swyped from my Warm Evo.
It's not that hard if you know what you're doing. The fact that it still has S-On means it's not rooted.
Before you root this phone update all the radios first. Go to Menu > Settings > System Updates and update the Profile, PRL, and HTC Software. From there read the following articles before you attempt to root again and possibly brick your friend's phone.

For the last, i heard i can Go back to 2.2 so i can root it, but idk how and if i can do it. I know you guys get all of this alot, i'm sorry to be another noob u.u
Thanks for the replies and the help!
No you can't root it. Yet.

You can get to hboot by going into settings, not sure where, applications I think, and disable fastboot
We're comin from a pure power source.
I have my evo 3d on a temp perm root on 2.3.3. I wonder did why theres no root for the evo 4g.
The newest OTA update changed the bootloader (if I'm using the wrong term, please correct me) which has not been cracked yet. People are working on it, however, more people are working on the EVO3d - it may be a while before stock 2.3.3 can be rooted. Sorry.
well i also hear that since theyve acheived temp/perma root (might be wrong terminology lol) on the sensation that the evo 4g and sensations bootloaders are so similar that MAYBE there might be an exploit around the corner for us Evo 4g users....God i hope im right lmao

The videos describe a method to downgrade to 2.2 IF you have previously been rooted (S-Off in hboot) so basically we're hoping and waiting for a method to become available. There's talk of Unrevoked teaming up with a group of Devs who've found an exploit that might work.
The Evo 3D temp root wont work because the 3D uses different drivers and has some other differences that cannot be carried over to the Evo. Thanks much HTC...
