Rooted epic 4g? how & why? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

may i ask what a rooted epic will do? & how does it compare to an original epic?

Honestly if you don't know then you probably shouldn't be rooting or even considering rooting in the first place

seconded. this entire forum is basically about rooting and what it does/what you can do. you shouldnt have any trouble figuring it out

Thirded.
If you don't know what it is, you haven't read enough.
If after reading you don't know what it is, you still haven't read enough.
If after reading more, you still don't know what it is, you probably have some reading comprehension issues, but also search and read some more.
Starting a new post as your FIRST post on XDA asking people to explain to you what it is, UGH.

shouldn't this be in General?...But for starters, I would recommend beginning at the one-click root forum, and whatever you do, don't be scared to brick your phone, I have yet to brick mine and I am constantly flashing my phone! Good luck!

Come on guys. Really? Is this the kind of community we want to be? Everyone's gotta start somewhere. Just suggest reading up first, and point him to where he's gotta go. Remember, there was a point where you didn't know what rooting was either.

Well since no one wants to be nice...
Rooting is basically giving you root access to the phones operating system. The reason for doing this is to allow you to customize and optimize your phone for your specific needs. The two biggest reasons for rooting are the ability to remove bloatware and for flashing custom roms/kernels. Rooting also gives you access to programs in the market that require superuser permissions (root).
The difference between an unrooted epic 4g and a rooted one, unrooted is a handicaped device that is little more than a fancy toy that can browse the web and make phone calls. A rooted one is really what ever you want it to be. A cool toy or an amazing tool or both.

Thank you, holy crap so many evil people in the world why are slipping into XDA? Just answer the question, did we not all start at 1 post?
To add to that, Rooting gives you Access to tether your internet connection from your epic to a laptop wirelessly, This is the only reason i'd root the Epic.

I've looked around quite a bit for simple rooting wizards, other than visionary, I a pair of videos showing a g2 rooting wizard available from g2root.info
Is this a legitimate wizard? It seems suspicious to me.
Its a scam , it promises to root your G2 for you after you fill out some surveys, it will not root your phone. This has been posted here before and removed by forum Mods.
Thanks man, I was pretty sure this was fake, I just wanted to reassure myself lol.

I have lookd into this method before, but I don't know if I'm ready for this. I purchased my phone in late December, so it has the newest updates & many users have commented poorly on this method. Do you believe the risk is worth it? And is this method that much easier than the rage method?

If your comfortable with the rage method, then you might as well use the gfree method, by far the least amount of issues rooting, the method in the link above is how I oringinaly rooted my phone and so have many more, but if you were to get a census from the forum I think the majority of members would tell you to root using gfree. There is a way to run gfree using temp root with visionary, then use something like rootexplorer to place the needed files in data/local and use terminal emulator to run the commands. Search the threads it in here somewhere. But bottom line if your gonna mod your phone you might as well set up AndriodSDK and learn some basic ADB, never know when something might go wrong and you need it. Good Luck.

Sorry for this thread and it might be dumb to somewho are a little more savy with odin and computers. I had over 12 android phones nexus, evo, nexus s,g1 mytouch 3g n so on. Never had to root using odin it was usually unlocking bootloader or just using terminal. It would be greatly appreciated if this could happen and im sure there are many people that think same way. So please if u wanna bash me n say i shouldnt root if i cant use odin then fine but this is a new method and so would alot of other ppl cause it seems we have a good development crew popping up roms n mods n kernals right and left. If a bounty is needed i will be more than happy to donate. Ty for your time.

The odin3 method is honestly very simple. You literally can root your phone in less than 3 minutes with the click of a button. I've used terminal emulator and adb methods of rooting and I can say that the only other easier method other than odin3 that I've used was z4. You can do it. Just have faith and confidence. Terminal emulator is much more harder than using odin3.

One of the great things about XDA is you dont have to be all that tech saavy and there are plenty of people to help with questions.
However, one should make an honest attempt to familiarize themselves with all of the tools available.
You have nothing to lose and you just might learn a lot from the experience. Then it might be your turn to help someone else

I'd say go for it, if you're at least moderately technically inclined.
At the very least unlock the bootloader (this will wipe your phone so backup any photos etc!). Rooting can be done later if you do that first.
If you have to ask, no you probably shouldn't.
No question, definitely root without a doubt.

If you don't root your phone, it's not yours. You're not responsible for it if it gets messed up, but you are limited in what you can do with it. You're a licensee, not the owner.
I am of the opinion that I should own what's mine.

Help Wanna Root

Ok so I have a AT&T Galaxy note and I want to root it so I can get faster speeds. I have T-mobile service... Can I still root using AT&T stuff even though I have T-Mobile? It is also unlocked. Can someone guide me on what to do. I know how to do it just want to make sure Im doing the right thing though.
Thanks in advance
Herr is the easiest way to root without tripping you counter. Find the latest for your provider then flash it using Odin. Then you decide from there if you wanna flash any custom rom after.

Whoah! First off dont send the guy off to root his phone first thing! He doesnt have clue!
First off you can NOT flash tmobile roms onto att phone or wind mobile on rogers etc.
Secondly root does not give you faster speeds!
Rooting is great but do your self a favor and read first or your gonna end up like this guy
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2229965
I guess he finally realized he had flashed the wrong rom...amoung other things.
:banghead:
For now im telling ya, read up before you use odin and go flash crazy or youll be crying that kies ain't working. (When youre doing it wrong it never does)
Yes you can get your note2 to work on tmobile but dontvexpectvit to work like a note2 from tmobile.
My advice if your on tmo, sell it and by the tmo n2.
Rooting is great but trust me if it made your phone faster the phone companies would not be happy.
Now... there are tricks to TRY to get fastest speeds and you do need root for this.
But you need to apply these hacks in addition to rooting.
Check out the stickies and also click the thread I linked its got a link to a gn2
Its a great tool not just for noobs

Well, just for clarification, rooting can make your phone faster. It can make your phone faster by removing unnecessary apps that could be running in the background. It also allows you to tweak settings and config files, though not recommended for a newbie. You may also use custom roms that could provide serious performance improvements.
So it is inaccurate to say rooting cannot increase the speed of your device. There have even been some cases of gaining networking speed improvements by changing settings in the build.prop file on some AT&T devices.
Rooting is the typical gateway to these other options.

Did you read mine? You cant do any of the things to increase your devices performance without root. So, this means rooting is part of the process. This also means rooting is part of speeding up your device. We can play tit for tat and mince words all day. The point is the original post wanting root for the purpose od speeding up a device is valid.

I know I'm late to the party, but here's my two cents:
As far as I'm aware, all of the various guides (and toolkits) actually use the same method (although, the toolkit does have a tendency to bork the wifi). It's just really the packaging they come in. Whenever I recommend a guide to people, I always link this guide by Skunk Ape. It's intuitive and explains each step quite well, with pictures and clear instructions. I've never had someone come back to me asking for clarification after reading that guide.
Hope you enjoy your rooted phone!

Welcome to the Sprint forums! We're generally nice people. The only time you really see the ugly side is if you flash an international Rom to your phone (which bricks it, btw). That's when the sarcasm comes out.
Just stick to Roms made for our phones (d2spr, not i9300) and you'll be fine!
So after researching roms and reading/.watching reviews, it seems that blazer is closest to stock minus all the bloat/samsung stuff that is loaded by default. Is this correct, or would u guys recommend a different rom for a STOCK experience +tweaks/-bloat.
I swear if I bought an htc phone I wouldn't be quite as clueless.

Everyone on here would probably recommend a different rom. I'm currently running msg&chubbz rom. It's pretty stock, does have a lot of features from gs4. Does have "minit settings" which allow you to change battery icon/color, clock color/location, and some others, but besides these changes its pretty stock. I was clueless to s-offing my brothers evo lte, but I got it eventually. HTC phones are a little more confusing to most people.
