Its your choice. I'd say go ahead and root it. But read about what your doing. Nobody can tell if you should or not. there's not a definite reason not to... that I know of.

I'd say go for it, if you're at least moderately technically inclined.
At the very least unlock the bootloader (this will wipe your phone so backup any photos etc!). Rooting can be done later if you do that first.
If you have to ask, no you probably shouldn't.
No question, definitely root without a doubt.

This.
If you don't root your phone, it's not yours. You're not responsible for it if it gets messed up, but you are limited in what you can do with it. You're a licensee, not the owner.
I am of the opinion that I should own what's mine.

I just recently rooted my phone and am relatively new to flashing ROMs but I'm totally addicted. I would agree that you should do as much research and read thoroughly through the forums. Great experience for me so far.

Same. You really do learn about your device and the way Android works. I've had some good and bad experiences with flashing, but I've learned a lot. It's fun and you can apply so many mods to make your device unique to yourself.

Her phone will not stay connected on a call for more than 5 minutes at a time. It constantly goes into Airplane mode, and she randomly has data drops.
I've put her on AOKP 4, Liquid smooth & Android Rev HD 3.0, with Stock & Franco #2 milestone. NOTHING WORKS.
It sucks because I have no problems with mine, other than a bit of lag here and there (which may have been fixed with the Trinity Kernel).
So shes done. Already up and purchased an HTC one S. I really want her to stay in the GN but I think its just left a bad taste in her mouth.
I'm just really trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with her phone.
I haven't tried the newest 4.0.4 that was released a few days ago, but I honestly doubt its gonna do anything. Suggestions???
Stock anybody? All the way stock with ugla4 or uglc1 radio? Trying to force roms perpetually in progress is a bad idea and your desire to force customization on her left her with a bad phone.

It's probably defective, especially if you've tried the plethora of software options that people are likely to suggest. Careful buying things out of frustration, though, especially things that are brand new to the market. The One S is not immune to QC defects and such. For instace:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...phones-one-day-does-htc-have-qc-problems.html
Get her GNex replaced. Or let her just go with the One S, I'm sure it's a solid phone. There are tradeoffs that she may or may not care about when one decides to use a non-Nexus phone. Just make sure she knows.
Why would you buy your wife a Galaxy Nexus and unlock it? I'm going to assume she's not Android savy or knows what you're doing, but seriously a bad idea just asking for trouble.
Just saying.
Also, that's a hard issue.
Let her keep the One S and keep it Stock. Its a good UX and won't break on her. Personally, I wouldn't recommend a Nexus phone to someone such as your wife.

He may have unlocked it just to try some different solutions to fix or alleviate the problems they were having.
But yeah, I think the more appropriate thing to have done is just take it back and get a new one. You paid for a working phone, don't ever hesitate to keep taking it back until you get one that works as it should!
I have heard that several people with that problem have had their GN replaced and fixed the problem. When I got mine, the verizon rep specifically told
me that if I had that problem to bring it back to get replaced. I think they had a bad batch of phones....

Hi I am new here and I would like to root my device to make it my own and get rid of all the apps that came with it, but I have a few questions.
1, Once I am rooted which rom is the best for my AT&T GN2?
2, Will I still be able to update my GN2?
3, What happens if I messed up during the rooting process?
4, And how often do I need to change roms?
5, Is rooting the way to go?
I am going to be dead honest here, I am a girl and some of the steps of rooting I dont quite understand, if someone can help me explain things I will be so happy.

1. Try each rom out and find out what YOU like. I personally use CleanRom 4.0.5 with no problems.
2. Why update when custom roms are better than stock roms?
3. If you mess up thats on you. But its not to hard root. I rooted and installed a custom rom before leaving the att store.
4. If you find a rom that you like you will most likely flash a new rim once its updated.
5. Yes rooting has many advantages. Ex. Wifi tethering, removing bloatware, custom roms, etc.....

No. You can be rooted using the "stock" rom you are using now out of the box. You will have the ability to delete apps using the app mentioned before.
If and when you do decide to install new roms. You will have to install a recovery. Which that exynos abuse apk does not include.
A recovery is a whole other thing.
For recovery I use twrp.

I'll be honest, this smells of a "phone won't turn on" thread in the near future. You're not ready to root your phone and go playing around in recovery. You might be ready to root once you'd studied up on exanose abuse and the rooting concept in general. But right now I would hold off if I were you. TBO the Gn2 runs so well out of the box that you're almost there anyway. Make sure you are confident that you will know how to do each step BEFORE you attempt to root, and are sure you have another web-enabled device so that you can come here for questions while your Gn2 is down.

I know I'm late to the party, but here's my two cents:
As far as I'm aware, all of the various guides (and toolkits) actually use the same method (although, the toolkit does have a tendency to bork the wifi). It's just really the packaging they come in. Whenever I recommend a guide to people, I always link this guide by Skunk Ape. It's intuitive and explains each step quite well, with pictures and clear instructions. I've never had someone come back to me asking for clarification after reading that guide.
Hope you enjoy your rooted phone!

Welcome to the Sprint forums! We're generally nice people. The only time you really see the ugly side is if you flash an international Rom to your phone (which bricks it, btw). That's when the sarcasm comes out.
Just stick to Roms made for our phones (d2spr, not i9300) and you'll be fine!
So after researching roms and reading/.watching reviews, it seems that blazer is closest to stock minus all the bloat/samsung stuff that is loaded by default. Is this correct, or would u guys recommend a different rom for a STOCK experience +tweaks/-bloat.
I swear if I bought an htc phone I wouldn't be quite as clueless.

Everyone on here would probably recommend a different rom. I'm currently running msg&chubbz rom. It's pretty stock, does have a lot of features from gs4. Does have "minit settings" which allow you to change battery icon/color, clock color/location, and some others, but besides these changes its pretty stock. I was clueless to s-offing my brothers evo lte, but I got it eventually. HTC phones are a little more confusing to most people.

I dunno. @thecubed doesn't own this phone and @designgears mentioned that he bought it because of the locked bootloader, implying be didn't want to flash stuff. Then again, he essentially let cubed brick his phone so apparently his addiction still had him in a strangle hold.
It will happen, but how long and when it does how many roms will we see.

Not yet. Hopefully soon, but who knows. Htc is getting better at finding exploits and fixing them. I have a fear that pretty soon no phones will be able to get s-off.

as long as someone offers a Java card their will be s-off but you're right, the new exploits are few and far between.

i guess there is a way to gain root access from the SIM card and from there you can load the unsecured boot.img and click the S-on flag to off.
Are you on 4.4 or 4.4.2? If 4.4 you can use firewater to unlock tour phone

Yup, 4.4.2....sorry about that. ::crosses fingers for a breakthrough in rooting 4.4.2::
I'm crossing my fingers as well. I just recently switched back to Android from iOS and I would love to clean up this bloatware.
I'm also on 4.4.2 and I wanna root my phone. Is there a way to downgrade to an older android like a factory reset? I want to try all these custom Roms its killing me lol

Nope you need to be s off to downgrade. If it makes you feel better you are not missing much on the Roms. Lol
I am sure he will come out with a root for the phone.

Are you serious? You just took a huge shot at the devs that generously donate their time to give us some very awesome roms. I can't really even believe you just said that. Why are you here? What a joke.

The addition of "lol" only makes it look like you're bashing the roms we have even more. Maybe next time just proofread what you type so you don't accidentally come off like a **** or call people idiots in a poorly constructed post.

If I was bashing the devs work I surely wouldn't be laughing about it now would I? I would be serious. In all the years on different android forums I never once saw a person bashing a devs work end it in lol. I have supported many devs over the years and with the HTC one recommended many Roms to members on here. I just tested a fix for data drops on the latest viper one Rom for a dev. Anyone that knows me can say I don't bash a devs work unless they steal from another dev and try to pass it off as their own work.
So next time when you can't understand a post ask the person what they meant or just ignore the post all together. Instead of attacking the person blindly.

Thanks for the post and kind words. I have always tried to help where I can.
Your right neo has been dragging his feet far to long. We need to drag him kicking and screaming over to the One side lol. If I had the money I would buy him a One just so he could dev over here. Not saying viper one or any of the other Roms are bot good enough. Just the more the merrier and more options for us users. I have been rocking viper one one since release and has been a beast for me.
