Upgrading from CM 6 to CM 6.1 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to upgrade to the new CM 6.1 and want to keep all my settings, apps, etc. I tried using Titanium Backup and changing from CM 6 to Fresh EVO when I was in Chicago last weekend with no luck, I could boot and restore everything fine but then after a restart I it wouldnt load right... Any help on making this seamless? Thanks.

If its going from CM6 to Cm6.1 you should be able to flash right over your current rom without a full wipe. Try making a nand backup first of course.

What he said just update it wiping cache and dalvik and your good to go just remember to nandroid always

[Q] ROM change question from a still apparent newbie...

I've been running stock rooted 3.29 deodexed.
Finally decided to try out Myns Warm 2.2 today. Did a Titanium backup and a nand backup, flashed the new ROM. I wasn't expecting all my widgets, apps and homescreen settings to remain intact. Obviously I was pleasantly surprised when they were.
Two questions:
1) Is this normal behavior for any ROM (e.g., CM6) or just because Warm2.2 is a Sense-based ROM? How did it even know all my homescreen settings? Did Titanium restore them without my asking? (Yes I know that's three questions in one, sorry)
2) Why were all my homescreen icons/widgets doubled up on top of eachother?
I know these are probably basic questions but just based on everything I've read I was expecting to have to install Ti backup, restore my apps, and then re-setup my homescreens. So this was just really surprising to me.
Just noticed that it also retained the flash that I applied for the 4-in-1 reboot mode (hot reboot, recovery, etc). Color me confused.

Hi there...well, as a noob myself I have learned that when you flash any NEW ROMS from different developers, you MUST wipe DATA, CACHE & DAVLIK/CACHE 1st. If you are upgrading from Myn Warms 2.2 3.29 OTA to 3.30 then you usually don' have to unless they tell you to. That's why your icons/widges are doubled up. Can't go from Stock rooted ROM to Myns...different development.
It will wipe everything on your system and install the ROM brand new as if you bought your phone that way. Items in your SD card will remain there...it does not wipe that. The NAND backup is good if for some reason your EVO goes haywire you can just do the old fashion Bootloader and go into recovery and get everything back. (I actually do this once a week just incase I need to go back to a place when my EVO was perfect...I delete any old ones so that I don't get confused.)
Once you flash the new ROM then go into titanium back up and restore everything. I use Mybackup Pro (Free for 30days to try out)...it saves my home/android screen so That I don't have to reset everything I have except for login into my POP mail server. Not a fan of Titanium but a lot of people seems to like it.
You may need to restore your Evo to that NAND you just did, then WIPE...then flash Myns. Also Myns ROM has the 4-1 reboot. I hope this helps...
Well that explains the 4-in-1 but I did wipe my cache and dalvik cache twice before flashing Warm2.2. I was not on Warm2.2 so this was a change from stock to Warm2.2. So I still don't see how all my settings were retained.
I'm not looking for a "clean" install of Warm2.2 - I'm merely trying to understand why it happened this way when I thought that it wasn't supposed to, and if this behavior is normal.
And just out of curiosity why don't you like Ti backup? I've always wondered if it really serves any good purpose since it seems like Nand backups all my apps anyways....?

Unfortunately you will need to do a clean install when you go from one ROM to another. Even if the other ROM is a rooted stock ROM...still someone's ROM they created with the stock OTA.
You have to wipe DATA too, no way around it....because the system is rooted and different developers change the path to what they want to do with their ROM you can't flash MYNS on top of someone else's rooted stock ROM. It will conflict with one another (hence the overlapping of icons/widgets). That's why they created apps like Titanium and Mybackup Pro because it will be like a clean phone you just bought and instead of taking hours to set up your phone again...do a restore from one of the programs and you will be up and running with the new ROM.
I love Myn's ROM...

The way I view NAND backup is like a system restore on your PC. I don't use it unless I want to make sure there is a good location for me to go back to just in case my EVO acts up.
I tried titanium backup...visually it doesn't give me confidence as a noob...mybackup pro is very simple and does its purpose.

Yeah I think I discovered your point. Myns ROM works flawlessly going from stock to Myns without a data wipe. But I just put on CM6 and had several FC and launcher problems. For some reason I never thought that wipe also meant data wipe...I was probably just trained by all the mod flashes I've been doing....

I was always told to wipe everything when flashing one ROM to the next. But only wipe cache & Davlik/cache if your flash themes...Kernels or different MODS.
Two questions for you two since you both seem to know what you're doing
1. Did either of you use the special recovery images? (Clockwork/AmonRA)
2. I backup everything to Titanium Backup Pro...but if i wipe EVERYTHING that means Titanium Backup Pro will be gone as well...so how am I supposed to get everything restored if the app is gone?
1) Not sure, I use clockwork recovery but don't know what a special recovery image is.
2) My understanding is that you have to reinstall Ti backup, and whence forth it will find the old restore files that you can use to restore your apps.
Whenever installing a new rom it is best to do a FULL wipe meaning data, cache, and davlik. Even though there may not be any problems initially upon use, there will likely be some down the road. It's your phone though, do as you please.

So I did a full wipe last night and installed CM6. It installed just fine but my data didn't work....kept telling me that I didn't have a SIM installed. I could make phone calls though. I'll have to try again tonight but I did a restore so I had a functional phone today. Any idea why that happens?
Also I did a full backup with My Backup Pro so I'm assuming I can just reinstall My Backup Pro and it will find my backed-up data for restoration?
Could be a network problem on sprint's side.

1. Yes...AmonRA.
2. When you use an APP like Titanium and Mybackup Pro...it saves your backup to your SD card and a full wipe does not wipe external memory cards only internal system stuff. So once you wipe and flash a new ROM...you need to go to market first and foremost to download whichever backup program you used and then order it to restore your phone. It will know the path in which it used to back everything up and pull from there. Follow the prompts.

[Q] Best way of updating Redux?

I've installed Redux and enjoyed it on my phone for over a month now. However, I see there is a newer version out. What is the best way of updating (bearing in mind I've got quite a few apps that I don't want to install)?
TIA
You can just flash the new Redux version with the Rom Manager or with the Recovery. You dont have to wipe because you're already on Redux.
Nothing would be deleted. But it's helpfull to do a nandroid backup (a nandroid backup will backup everything on your phone (Apps, Data, Settings,...)) with Rom Manager or Recovery if something goes wrong with the update.

Nandroid backup rebboting after udating to clockwork recovery 3?

Hello,
I just got back my desire from repair and have rooted it again using unrevoked, my main rom i flashed was cyanogen 7, i made a backup and then i thought i would s-off and update to clockwork recovery 3....everything was successful.
But when i try out other roms then decide to restore my nandroid back up of cyanogen 7 messeges pop up quickly saying all the apps and stuff have stopped unexpectedly and then the phone reboots again and again.
Can some one help please.
Cheers.
Just do a full wipe and fresh install then backup again.

Hi,
I have done this 3 times and the nandroid backup still reboots, only way to fix it is to install cyanogen on top of it and it fixes it.
I think i will need to try with a sense rom and see if it happens too.
Thanks.
Your tryings to restore the same backup? I said wipe, install fresh then backup that rom, not restore the old one.

And if you did some fancy formatting to your SD card. Well, Might think about that also....

Upgrading Leedroid HD from 3.0.1 to 3.0.3?

I installed Leedroid 3.0.1 last week, but wish to upgrade to the latest version.
On past occasions, I've wiped all user data and partitions using ClockWorkMod before upgrading the OS, but it's very time-consuming having to re-enter my user settings every time.
Is there a way to upgrade and still keep my settings?
Is 3.0.1 based on the same source?
I'm sure you should be able to just flash over the current ROM without wiping. I used to do this when I was LeeDroid and still do with CM7.
Yes, don't wipe the data. But if you want ext4 you will have to. Otherwise don't. Just wipe the cache.
Or use something like Titanium or MyBackUp Pro to back it all up.
thank you
same questions here, but been answered though, thanks guys

question for the pros

guys i have a question for you .i flash my evo with new roms and all i wipe is factory.data catche and davik catche is this correct ? ive seen ppl wipe data /boots/ whats safe to wipe when flashing a rom and not loosing your contacts
As long as you are backed up to gmail with your contacts it is safe to wipe every option but sdcard and don't wipe batt stats unless u are charged to 100% if your SD is partitioned make sure you wipe sdext. If u don't save your contacts to gmail go to the contacts app and export to sdcard b4 wiping and you can wipe everything and import your contacts after the flash

like what he said its all to do with your gmail, because I pretty much go down the list on ra's recovery 3 times plus run a wipe all zip.
You can find a format all zip I'm the link below and it wipes your whole rom off. So if you use it, you will HAVE to flash a rom or else your phone will not even boot

If you are flashing a new ROM..wipe everything except SD card...And to be honest I always wipe SD card also...Simply back up your apps with Titanium Backup...and backup your entire SD card to your computer. This is called a complete wipe and will always give best results.

Correct, you can backup your current MIUI, and delete the older backup. Also when backing up, you don't need to delete anything. You only need to wipe the data, ect upon flashing a new rom.
thanks a lot man .now do you know whats the latest miui rom . i go to update and it says i have the latest one
MIUI is released every Friday, so the newest one would be 1.12.2 as in 2011, December (12th month) 2nd (day).
And I will always, always, always, no matter what the argument is, wipe everything in Amon Ra, except SD Card: and never use Wipe Scripts, and I can say I have very few issues that a lot of people report having
Don't forget about backing up your .android folder too. That's where all your apps are stored on your sd card and occasionally they can get corrupted or lost when switching ROMs.
im a person who likes to learn so sorry for the noob questions .lets say i want to update to the newest update on miui ,do i have to save this rom and wipe catche and davilik catche. i have the miui rom backed up but i have not backed up the miui rom that i have added all the tweaks to so will i have to back up the tweaked miui and than zipp the new update or will it just update on its own

If you're not going to return to your current rom, no need to back up, though you may want to in case it doesn't flash.
Simply backup your launcher settings, backup all you apps with titanium backup , boot to recovery, do a full wipe, except for sd card, then flash you MIUI rom, boot up, restore apps and re-set up.
the miui rom i am using right now is backed up and i restored it and its in use ,however, i have added alot of apps and have everything good on this one .my question is i want to upgrade to the latest miui update do i have to save this rom and just flash the new update
Even easier, use the Back Up app to back up your theme, desktop settings, messages and WiFi settings so you don't have to reset all that manually.
Stuck
I just received a notification from sprint of an update for the evo4g, when I try to apply it the phone started to do it and then 15 secs later it is stock on a exclamation mark and a lil drawing of a little android under it.... now is not even doing anything.
What did I do wrong?
BTW the evo is rooted and backed up with clockworkmod, so I guess I will have to reflash the backup on it.

Your NEVER SUPPOSED TO ACCEPT OTAs. !!!!!!!!
from my miui evo 4g
OK, so no OTA, but isn't this update supposed to fix some issues with their service? since I'm having many of them atm... like my 3g data connection keeps on shutting itself up and leaving me without service whenever it pleases.
I just hope removing the IQ and the loggers of the phone is not what is affecting my service that bad. Because it actually sucks right now, without wifi Pandora will not play 1 song without getting service problems, can't do a search on the internet without lossing the net. GRRRR
