[Q] Best way of updating Redux? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've installed Redux and enjoyed it on my phone for over a month now. However, I see there is a newer version out. What is the best way of updating (bearing in mind I've got quite a few apps that I don't want to install)?
TIA

You can just flash the new Redux version with the Rom Manager or with the Recovery. You dont have to wipe because you're already on Redux.
Nothing would be deleted. But it's helpfull to do a nandroid backup (a nandroid backup will backup everything on your phone (Apps, Data, Settings,...)) with Rom Manager or Recovery if something goes wrong with the update.

Which ROM with apps2sd+?

I have currently got a R1 rom with apps2sd on it but would like a ROM with apps2sd+ to save internal memory.
I have narrowed it down to 2 roms,
Pays-ROM Desire Sense v1.6 Dalvik+A2SD (RockSolid)+(BraveSoul OC)[05/19/10]
or
17/May r3 - MoDaCo Custom ROM
Im not to sure which one to go for. The requirements im after is obviously apps2sd+ and is the most similar to the standard HTD desre ROM.
Thanks,
Depending on the options you choose in the kitchen you can get the Modaco ROM to be pretty much the same as HTC Sense. I'm running a r3 MCR with A2SD+ and ADW Launcher on top and everything's running great.
Will changing the ROM wipe everything from the phone or will it still be there?
Finally, when installing the ROM with a2sd+, will it move the dalvik cache automatically to the SD or will i have to do it?
It's definetly recommended to do a FULL wipe before flashing a ROM. Just be as thorough as you can possibly be to avoid issues or even just having to flash again. Don't want to scare you but some people did brick their USB port while flashing. How this exactly happens isn't really clear but i always just do that bit extra to avoid issues.
So, you can use titanium backup to backup all your apps+appdata and also systemdata, then in recovery you can also do a nandroid backup which will backup your full system.
If flash is succesfull you can restore your backups with titanium backup again. Don't try to restore HTC stuff when it's not included in the new ROM.
If flashing is not succesful or you encounter to many issues you can always restore your nandroid backup. I tried to make a nandroid+ext partition backup but that didn't work somehow so i always just copy the whole card to my pc before doing anything.

I've tried reading but I need help. I flashed a ROM already. I want to flash another!

Okay I have flashed Calkulin's Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712695
The one without the OTA update that killed Root (I haven't updated to that yet )
I rooted using Toast's method - I did part 1 of his root. For part 2, I did this one
For part 2, I did this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705113
I'm trying to flash a new ROM now. Maybe damage protection or even FROYO (Yeah froyo sounds better)
I also want to do the NOVATEK FPS bandaide as well.
I just don't know where to start. I read somewhere someone said you just re-flash a rom again with the recovery...but I don't want to screw up.
Can someone post a very brief what I should do or lead me please?
FYI, the Rom you flashed from the first link provided is stock rooted with the latest update.
Anywho, you heard right, you flash new roms the same way you flashed that Rom. Download the Rom to your sdcard, boot into recovery, wipe data cache and dalvik, flash from sdcard, choose the Rom you put on there and confirm. That's all there is to it!
The important thing to remember is to always wipe before you flash, this will ensure no errors occur.
Hey thanks for backing up data I heard nandroid and titanium which one is better
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Two different things. You should have at least one nandroid that you know works, this is used encased you beef anything up from flashing or something and you want to return your phone to the exact state it was at when you did the backup. That's the purpose of nandroid, to backup a complete image of the state your phone is in, Rom and all (excluding radio and wimax)
Titanium is a utility you use to backup all of the apps you have installed, along with their data and market links. This is usefull when flashing a new Rom so you can easily restore all of your apps without having to download and install them again and again.
Check this, it answers quite a bit of your questions and then some.

Noob has the ROM flashing fever but has questions

Sorry for sounding like a noob….because I am … lol
I couple weeks ago I rooted Evo using the
SimpleRoot OTA 1.47.651.1 method
Then Installed Fully rooted stock 1.47.651.1 in one shot (no adb!)
Did nandroid backup
Then I installed Sprint Lovers ROM (including 2.05.00.06.01 wimax/baseband radios)
Been enjoying, installing apps, customizing.
Use Titanium Backup to backup regularly
Now I want to try some other ROMs like CyanogenMod-6!
I now have installed Rom Manager
Flashed ClokWorkMod Recovery (2.5.0.1)
And did another nandroid backup
So now can I just flash a different ROM, use Titanium restore to restore applications such as K-9 Mail and all my settings/accounts/etc and these will work on the new ROM?
Then if I want, I just use nandriod restore and Evo will be exactly where I am today (with Sprint Lovers)?
If so, does restoring applications/data also work backing up on a 2.1 ROM and restoring on 2.2 ROM?
For the most part, yes. But there may be some issues restoring EVERYTHING from Ti back to a different ROM. Start with just apps you need, then accounts, see how that goes. I haven't had issues, but it might just be cleaner that way, and if it's not that difficult to just set up your accounts again, you could avoid potential issues that way.
But, yes, Ti should give everything back to you after the flash. Even scenes!
Also don't forget to wipe before flashing!

[Q] Help Flashing Custom ROM

Hi had the official 2.3 RUU installed on my Desire, I have used Reveloutinary.io to S off my phone, i have now r0oted my phone.
I have created an ext 3 partition on the SD card and took a nandroid backup.
The info i really need is my HBOOT v is 6.93, i want to install the "[ROM][15/08][STABLE][Sense2.1+3.0 GB]InsertCoin CM7 HBOOT/STOCK 1.1.1" on my phone, the question i have is can i simply flash the ROM straight on the phone, or will i have to downgrade the ROM to an official 2.2 RUU first.....
Sorry for the noobness but this is my first post ever so please go easy on me.
If you successfully s-off'd you dont need to downgrade anything, just copy the ROM to the SD Card and for this particular ROM make sure your ext partition is atleast 1GB.
Then Full Wipe/Factory rest + Cache wipe + Dalvik Cache Wipe in recovery.
Now flash the .zip file, after turning off signature verification (should be under "install from sdcard")
Also make sure you download right version of the ROM.
Stock A2SD version if you didnt changed HBOOT, and CM7 version if you changed your HBOOT to CM7.
Also if this is your first ROM, then take a look if you have any WIFI/GSM problems after you booted up, if so it means you might need to update your radio to 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 (search forum for it, there are guides how to flash it too), if you dont have any issues then just ignore it.
Thank you so much for your help, will try it tomorrow and see how i get on.
I jumped the gun and tried it, i took an online backup using My backup pro and whe i have come to restore all of my apps and settings it has restored nothing.
Is there anything i have missed off this?
Sorry no idea i have no experience with My backup pro.. using Titanium Backup.

Updated Questions

I was running Android Revolution HD 6.1.5, updated to 6.3.1
without wiping any cache, just download 6.3.1 and
flash it into my phone, just asking is it a correct method?
And, how do i flash mod into desire hd?
Like the same as flashing rom?
Help is appreciated.
Thanks.
With ARHD (and most other ROMs), it's a good idea to wipe before flashing a major new version of the ROM.
For ARHD, this means when either of the first two digits in the version number changes. So from 6.1.x to 6.3.x, you should wipe, or from 6.x.x to 7.x.x (when it's released). Use the superwipe script provided in the ARHD first post. But from 6.3.1 to 6.3.2 you won't need to wipe anything.
The reason for this is that a change in either of the first two digits in the ARHD version number means a new version of Android or a new base firmware from HTC. Some of the key system files will be different, and you're much more likely to have problems if you just upgrade without wiping in between.
Wiping does mean you have to set up your apps again, or you can use Titanium Backup to restore them (user apps or data only, don't restore system apps or data). But wiping is worth it to avoid having any problems later on.
Most mods are in flashable zips and you can flash them in Recovery the same way as the ROM. It's always a good idea to take a backup in Recovery first, just in case something doesn't work or you decide you don't like the mod. The mods overwrite system files, so you can't uninstall them - you have to restore a backup.
Hope that helps, and happy flashing.

Power down the phone and then hold volume down while you press power on to get into recovery. When you're in recovery there should be a backup/restore menu that has everything you need.
When you backup it basically takes a snapshot of your phone and saves it with a filename that has the date & time (and for 4EXT recovery, it also has the ROM name). When you restore that backup, your phone goes back to the exact state it was when the backup was made.
So for titanium backup is to restore apps and etc
While the Recovery nanodroid is to restore back to everything + rom
i did super wipe and install 6.3.1 and install some custom mod
CRT and BlueHD, Thanks alot !

Exactly right.
Hmm, if i reformat my sd card, will the nanodroid backup
wipe out together?
Yes, but you can copy the folder to your PC and then copy it back afterwards. It's the clockworkmod/backup folder on your card.
