[Q] Make phone work on different data band - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I purchased a T-Mobile G2 on ebay and had it shipped to Panama. The phone works on edge, and in one point in particular I get a G on the screen, but no 3G. I'm guessing this has to do with the data band. Is it possible to crack the phone to force it to recognize other data frequencies?

Only if you crack open the case and change the phsyical antenna. Else your stuck on edge.

I think it's a little more than the antenna that would need to be replaced, but yes, you can't change the 3g bands.

Question about EDGE and 3G on GNEX

I just pulled the trigger and ordered a GSM unlocked galaxy nexus from handtec in the UK. I currently have a T-Mobile nexus s. I get awesome 3g coverage all over NYC. My main issue is inside of some buildings and in particular my work I only get edge as tmobiles high frequency bands are notorious for poor building penetration. Will the GNex switch to an at&t 3g band before kicking over to T-Mobile edge? If I set the option to use wcdma only will that do the trick? I'd imagine that I won't get dropped by T-Mobile for "roaming" on at&ts frequencies every now and again! Thoughts?

Don't think you're allowed to choose to roam on AT&T unless there is no T-mobile service present at all. Might have to just deal with EDGE or if you're at work surely there's WiFi available. Guess it really depends how the roaming agreements are set up between T-mo and AT&T.
Correct me if I'm wrong I don't have much experience roaming, I've usually got good T-mo signal.

Last time I checked there's no data roaming agreements between AT&T and T-Mobile so this won't work at all.

I'm sure this will change once the deal falls through.

There is talk of a network sharing arrangement if and when the deal falls through. What exactly that means is unclear at this point but could be exactly what the OP is looking for.
There may be no data agreement but if I have the correct bands I should be able to force my way on to the network, no?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
No.
The network has to recognise the SIM. That means either a roaming agreement or an account with both and two SIMs.
Can you easily toggle between 2g/3g in the settings and in the power widget (or something like tasker)?

Any way to force LTE only on Samsung Galaxy S III i747?

Hi Guys,
I have LTE coverage where I am, but phone keeps going to 4G.
Is there any way to force it so it stays on LTE?
I have tried the following app but no luck. Once I select the LTE Only mode it switches to WCDMA Preferred mode some how.
LTE OnOFF - HTC Thunderbolt, https://play.google.com/store/search?q=lte+on+off
Any way, any idea any one??
Thanks
If it keeps dropping back to 4G then the LTE service probably isn't strong enough where you are. You can't just force it on either. That's like forcing any service at all in the middle of the ocean.

Previous poster is right.
But u can play around. Reboot to recovery, wipe cache, reboot. Flash different ROMs, usually one Stock based, another AOKP - I believe modems are vastly different there.
The only way to fix this is make a new APN there's a post on skyrocket fourms that shows you how

I have done forcing on other devices such as Galaxy Nexus, currently using Sierra 754S that has feature where you can force it to stay on LTE, and it stays put.. Only problem it gets WICKED HOT if I pump a lot of data
Assuming you subscribed with your provider for LTE-service, then definitely it's because your LTE coverage is not great.
If you've never seen your phone connect to LTE before, I suggest you contact your provider and make sure you are on their LTE-network.
LTE-device doesn't automatically mean you're getting LTE service. I've seen people make that incorrect assumption.
Well, all you really need is LTE Sim card for AT&T, it works awesome ... as I said it works great with Sierra 754S air card.
So any device that has LTE capability it works perfect with that.

No voice coverage on Lte so the phone still needs hspa to make and Recieve calls and text messages. Until all the voice over Lte and hand off standards are in place Lte is a data only feature.
On a data stick it makes sense to allow an Lte only mode but on a phone it would not be a good idea.

AT&T G PRO E980 on T-Mobile

E980 from eBay; unlocked with number code (no data service on T-Mobile at this point-only phone); rooted with XDA instructions-verified with Joey Krim’s Root Checker basic; installed SuperSU; installed ASTRO file manager pro (had it from prior phone) - could not access Build Prop file so installed Joey Krim’s Build Prop Editor; as per XDA instructions changed ro.radio.networkmode=disable to ro.radio.networkmode=enable (and SAVED!!!). Opened “Settings”; “Networks”; “Tethering and Networks”; “Mobile Networks” (which now shows “Network Mode” which I entered and selected “GSM/WCMDMA/LTE auto”; then went down to “Network Operators” and opened and checked “automatic”. After booting there was no change in data access and I figured out problem was with APN (“Access Point Names”) settings - went to uTube for "MMS/APN settings for HTC Inspire T-MOBILE " and using pause button got the APN data needed. Went back to “Mobile Networks” page and clicked on “Access Point Names” which opens a blank page. Clicked on the lower right “Menu” button which opens small window at bottom with two options-pick the “New APN” which opens the full page for entry of the uTube data (I did not find on this E980 a place to enter “MMS Protocol:WAP 2.0"). Rebooted and data service appeared. The data service was “E” (Edge apparently) but I live on Mexican border and no LTE yet nor has T-Mobile apparently switched their “4G” to 1900 band. I will investigate with T-Mobile support how, if possible in this market, to move up the data food chain. My prior phones were Palm Treos then HTC G2 and RAZORs for landline replacement with PhoneLynx devices.
LG says without hardware flash no possibility (if at all) of 4g operation and not sure will work now with LTE from T-Mobile (not in my area yet). T-Mobile support says G Pro is not in their system yet. Amazing to me that all phone manufacturers do not have frequency agile products - my 12 year old RTI TV remote handles multiple frequencies and IR. LG support would not comment on Key Lime Pie . . .
I feel bad for users of other carriers who can't get the G Pro. Its stupid how LG makes it exclusive on AT&T than does little to nothing to market it. LG is just hurting the sales potential of the device by not making it more available in the US market.
I agree. Although it has been confirmed that this device will work and get T-Mobile 4G and LTE. I dont understand why T-Mobile won't market this phone. Its clearly a Note 2 beater in every aspect.

I think AT&T has put a stranglehold on LG just like VZW does with some of their partner manufactures. You can bet there were some back room deals going on prior to release.

Maybe, but LG has many phones for T-Mobile as well, i think more even. But the exclusives have been AT&T only, like the 3D LG Thrill, the "first" HD screen and LTE Nitro HD...............yeah you might be right.....
where did you buy your unlock code? which selleR?

LG reminds me of Commodore back in the 1980s: GREAT products, but not a clue how to market them. The OG Pro has a big H/W advantage over the Galaxy Note II and a larger screen (with less bloatware) than either the HTC One or S4; LG should be running comparison ads non-stop. What do we get instead? Almost nothing.

Bought on Ebay from salvatoregm - UNLOCKED. Unlocked many phones in past with various unlocker sites without problems.
tmobile
Okay I understand that the bootloader is currently locke but assuming it gets unlocked would it be possible to flash a custom modem to create support for tmobile 4g in un-refarmed areas? something like they did for the note one?
How does The LG Pro G work on T-Mobile? I live in a re-farmed area and am thinking of switching to the T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan.I have the chance to get a Pro G for $49,my plan was to get it,unlock it and use it on T-Mobile.

Probably not. What helped the Note in this regard was it's similarity to the Galaxy S2 hardware, and then T-Mobile release the Note on their network. T-Mobile doesn't carry any LG devices with even remotely similar hardware.
Have people been able to unlock phones that were previously locked? I'm assuming so, since I have seen unlocked ATT Phones. I want to buy one on eBay and then get an unlock code, but wanted to make sure it was possible first. I'm switching from the Note II. I love Samsung, but hate the Camera...
4G and LTE Works on T-Mobile
I was digging around in the not so secret.....secret menu and experimenting with options and found that you can simply activate the 4G and LTE on the Optimus G Pro. I will post a few screenshots of the home screen and of some speed tests for your amazement.......
You can access the LG menu by entering 3845#*980#
I'm not responsible if you blow your phone up....please be careful.
I'm using the ATT Lg Optimus G Pro here in Canada with my Rogers carrier and get full LTE speeds just by adding Rogers LTE APN settings. this would be the same for Bell or Telus. I have to say trading my s4 for this device was a smart move! Ya sure no dev support because of locked bootloader, I'm sure eventually that will change

According to a few people I've seen on here with mobile, you should get full LTE speeds on T-Mobile.

What I don't see is the support for t-mobile AWS bands for 4g....just LTE and Edge....
No need to activate LTE,should work out of the box as long as the APN settings are correct.

And I don't have LTE but HSDPA+
Does the icon change from just the E?
Where are you using it and what carrier? It may be your APN settings.
I'm pretty sure it's not the APN, used the same settings on another phone, just switched sims.
My location is Trinidad, and my carrier is bMobile (Cable&Wireless)
And 4G still works when I put the sim back in the other phone ( A Samsung Galaxy Note)
edit: I tried wiping, rebooting, switching the data on and off.....even flashed over the stock ROM, still no go. Just edge.
I'm bumping this cuz I installed CM10 and still no dice.
Forgot to mention that my SIM was cut to fit the phone.
Don't know if that would affect my 4g?
Ok so I am not getting 4G because the phone isn't detecting WCDMA.
Anyone have a fix for this?
Can I flash E980 on my phone?
So here's the deal, E988 does not work on 4G in my country, but the E980 would.
Carrier Digicel:
Customers must have a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) or High Speed Pocket Access (HSPA) or High Speed Pocket Access Plus (HSPA+) handset capable of a 1900 megahertz frequency (“4G Compatible Handset”) to subscribe to a Standard Data Plan or a 4G compatible BlackBerry handset to subscribe to a BB Data Plan.

Carrier bMobile/TSTT/C&W:
You can use a UMTS, HSPA or HSPA+ device operating at 1900MHz, but to get the best experience we recommend HSPA+. You will also need a 4G data plan, and you must be within a bMobile 4G coverage area to experience 4G speeds.

According to LG website their handset E988 works on 1800/2600 MHz for 4g.
I returned the phone and got a Samsung S4 instead.
Extremely disappointed cuz the LG was a superior experience to me.

Will this phone work on T-Mobile?

I know that Verizon phones come unlocked but how hard would it be to pop a T-Mobile SIM in the phone and get it running on T-Mobile? This is just a quick favor for a friend while he waits on a repair, so it doesn't need to have LTE even, just work. I have the phone S-Off and rooted
It will work for being a phone and WiFi device (edge speeds are laughable). You will only get edge.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using XDA Free mobile app
Text and voice will work fine, as far as data you will stuck with EDGE.
