I know that Verizon phones come unlocked but how hard would it be to pop a T-Mobile SIM in the phone and get it running on T-Mobile? This is just a quick favor for a friend while he waits on a repair, so it doesn't need to have LTE even, just work. I have the phone S-Off and rooted
It will work for being a phone and WiFi device (edge speeds are laughable). You will only get edge.

Text and voice will work fine, as far as data you will stuck with EDGE.

You can unlock an at&t phone to use on TMo, my brother does it all the time. But you will only get Edge data speeds which are incredibly slow... slower then 3G. Voice will work and data will work albiet very slow data.... like do a load of laundry slow.. if you are just looking for calls then unlock away.

Get 4g on a unlocked phone. There has to be someway to do it.
The title reads like your asking if an unlocked tmobile 4g phone will get 4g on att. Then no. Different radio frequencies. If I am mistaken the reword your question so I understand.

Nope you got it. I'm surprised no one figured it out yet. Edge sucks.

Hey all, been lurking for a while and found that many of you have unlocked Note 2's running on AT&T. I bought my unlock code and all is well on the voice front, I just can't seem to get data working (not edge, not 3G, not HSPA+, nothing). I've tried the various APN's floating around, I've tried selecting CDMA ALL for the frequency band, and I've selected AT&T and "registered on the network" using the automated feature of the phone itself. Still nothing.
When the AT&T version is released, will I be able to flash the ROM and make it work as if I bought it from them?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Thats weird. I unlocked mine and got tge cingular apn automatically .

Do you have the right sim and have you got at&t to update their system so it can work? Tell them you have a Note 1.
That's what Indie. I have data (but not LTE)

This is the answer I needed. Thank you! I ended up going to the AT&T store today. They said that for some reason I didn't have a data plan anymore (weird because I traded my iPhone 5 for this phone! They subsidized it.) They couldn't get my IMEI to work in their system so the saleswoman used her own IMEI to get me going.
I had been to the AT&T Store once before to trade my nanosim for a microsim, but the phone wasn't unlocked at the time so I couldn't test it out. They scanned in my phone but I guess it didn't take. All is well now, I have 4G (but not LTE, but it doesn't matter because I'm moving to a non-LTE city in less than a month).
It works perfectly, I put in the APNs from the Galaxy S3 on display that the AT&T Store. Decent speeds, awesome phone. Thanks everyone!

That's what I get. And honestly, 3-6Mb/s is perfectly fine for me. I'd like to get LTE for the time I'm here but it doesn't bother me that I don't. At some point one has to question that value of 100Mb internet on a 3GB data plan.
LTE is locked as of right now on the tmobile GN2

I know it isn't AT&T but it took a while to get Solavei APN working on my phone. I played with the settings forever with a customer service rep before I finally got it to work. MMS & internet work great now! Can't wait for LTE to launch!
i got my tmo verion unlocked. I purchased a 50/mo at&t go prepaid, and I can see 4G in the status bar.
Hope this helps
Just started a new thread about this...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971879...then I found this one.
I understand that this phone has the same hardware and supports the ATT LTE bands. I am done with locked bootloaders, I need confirmation someone is using this phone on ATT Network w LTE successfully without any hacks..
Any other feedback will be great (call quality, radio performance on ATT network)
Seriously pondering getting the T-MO version. I am hoping I can get one off contract.
TIA
I am currently using the phone on at&t. LTE works. Just make sure you set your APN right. I just disabled WiFi calling because it is not supported.

Yes I am. I had to add the apn and then choose lte in the network section. Works great though.

Just need to get a case for it.

what is the apn setting bc im looking to switch to t mobile with the s3 att
I am NOT able to get this to work at all on mine. I am unlocked, rooted and I am using a red pocket sim that uses AT&T towers.
Any suggestions?
Did you get an unlock code from tmo, a 3rd party, or some sort of debug method a la s3 and note 2?

I'm considering buying the TMO variant to use on AT&T as well and I have a few questions related to this topic:
Would service reception be restricted to just LTE or can the T-Mobile S4 still receive AT&T's E, 3G, etc as well when used on AT&T's network?
Also, and I'm sure this is dependent on the answer to my first question, would the T-Mobile S4 work with the AT&T 3G Microcell?
Whos Lte is faster tmobiles or att.

hard to answer; it really depends on the area, but for the most part im pretty confident in saying t-mobiles LTE is faster.
see attached photo
I've been using the T-Mobile version on AT&T for a few days. I unlocked using the debug menu instructions in this forum, setup the AT&T LTE APN and set the preferred network to LTE. It works fine on LTE, hspa, etc.
Speed test results were 53Mb down, 19Mb up, 66ms ping in Raleigh, NC.
I gave away my microcell with my POS iPhone because the Samsung phones performed OK without it. So, I can't answer whether the T-Mobile version will work correctly with a microcell.

Hi all,
I have a Galaxy S4 I9500, I keep my brightness at full all the time. When I finish playing games even "subway surfer" for 10 minutes, and exit to the desktop, I find that brightness is lowered alittle bit & increase gradually to the previous state which is full brightness (from 5 to 10 seconds). Could this be a result of that when playing games, the device uses the 1.6 quad core CPU and upon exit it takes alittle time (those 5 to 10 seconds) to shift to the 1.2 quad core CPU?
Really need your help.
Thanks alot.
So it seems this is the perfect phone to use on AT&T due to all that bootloader problems and crap on the AT&T version.
So folks still running fine without issues with this device on AT&T's network? I know LTE bands over lap so those are fine and the specs for the other frequencies all line up too but any problems with any data or voice stuff at this point after more time has passed? Including text and media messaging?

I had left an area with LTE coverage before I was able to network unlock, so I can't comment as to how LTE is working... but I've had no problems using it on Edge or 3G, texting/mms, etc. It even works flawlessly on my Microcell with no modifications other than the network unlock.

Mohan,
Which phone are you getting? The T-mobile version or the Google S4? I read online that the Google version of S4 is the same as the T-mobile version. I'm a T-mobile customer but I want to follow you using the Embryo rom on your new phone selection and hopefully get wifi-calling feature. I'm currently using the Embryo rom on my T989. Thanks.
adding an APN ... issues
lemme ask what will undoubtedly be a noob question. i've unlocked my T-Mo S4. confirmed. i popped in my AT&T iPhone 5's SIM card and boot up. i see that i have a signal, am able to make and receive phone calls. but no data. when i look at the APN, i'm seeing Cingular APN. what gives? i thought the phone would auto-detect and attach to the correct APN and i'd be good-to-go. thoughts? do i need to manually add the APN? I have all of the info necessary. when i try to add the APN, i am able to get to the proper menu, add all of the info. however, when i try to "save" the info, it never shows up as an APN for me to select. so whatever info i've just entered was never saved.
help!
I feel dumb for even asking such a rudimentary question, but here's the situation.
I bought an S4 from someone. There's an AT&T logo on the back (cover theoretically could have been replaced, who knows). He had Wicked v5 ROM on it when I bought it. The ROM said the phone was an SGH-M919 so that's what I've assumed. It was a T-Mobile ROM (had WiFi calling option etc). He was on AT&T Straight Talk, gave the phone to me, I popped in my AT&T SIM card and was ready to roll. That initially tells me the phone's SIM-unlocked.
Now I ditched AT&T and switched to Metro PCS. It wouldn't take the SIM until I unlocked the phone. (Metro PCS is on T-Mobile network now, so if the phone WAS a T-Mobile phone, it should have taken the SIM naturally with no problem). Also ODIN recognises it as a SGH-i337, which is the AT&T version and it refuses to flash the T-Mobile stock firmware tar.md5 file to the device.
So it seems I have the AT&T version after all.
Basically..... can the firmware lie and tell me anything it wants to? Which device do I actually have? I'm having trouble connecting to the Metro PCS 4G network locally and can only pick up Edge, so that's why I need to get the right ROM on my phone (to rule out all other possible problems of why it's not working.)
Thanks.
Sounds like an att phone unlocked to t mobile. Pretty sure you could use t mobile firmware

I've figured out it's the SGH-i337 just as you predicted. The T-Mo firmware ran just fine up until I popped the Metro SIM in... unlocked it, worked fine. I wouldn't be complaining one bit.. BUT.... now I can't access the 4G network, only Edge. Running off T-Mobile's towers. I was 30 miles from home last weekend and picked it up for a little while so I know I *can* get it, but not around my home. Other Metro users are getting it. Strangest thing.
I'm in the process o getting a i337 (heh) ROM on it right now and maybe with the Metro SIM in it will properly pick up the 4G around here.
Thanks though, you were right about the model
Take the battery cover off and look for m919 or i337 on the back of the phone, indented or outdented on or in the plastic somewhere.

Have you tried this rom for metro pcs?
Would using the unlocked AT&T model on T-Mobile network result in any loss of quality in voice and/or data? I know that sometimes, the radio in one phone is not always compatible, especially when it comes to LTE.
Anyone have an idea?
I have an unlocked atnt note 4 n i am using it on t mobile. I have not noticed any problem. I get LTE n 4g on it. But think I lose the ability to make calls on wifi.
Thanks. For me, that is a deal breaker because wifi calling is right up there with the camera and music. Guess I'll just stick with it as is for now.
