Given Google's vast resources, this could blow away Siri.
Although I'll never understand the obsession with these type of applications.
They seem to be more of a novelty.
No, no, no.
Google's actual answer to Siri is:
"HAHAHAHAHAHA... You think that's actually useful?!?
Okay, well in that case, we've had that kind of thing for years.
Not that it matters..."
F%#$ marketing.

I just really don't find it practical at all.
Let's see... I could either...
A) hit search and type what I want real quick and hit enter
or
B) load up an app, talk to it, have it take a second to figure out what I'm saying, then it searches and, assuming it understood me correctly (and don't give me the BS that Siri always does I tried it and it doesn't), get what I could have spent half the time looking for handed to me....and look like a weirdo in public doing it.
Yeah, no thanks, I'll choose A.
I just don't understand the fascination with this recent crop of voice-recognition software. I get the "natural language interpretation" angle. That is exactly what needs to be enhanced...but...aside from that (and procession power, sampling ability and storage capacity) I have been doing command and action oriented voice recognition since, what, 1992? 1993? It was an addon pack to OS/2 v3.0 Warp. I think Dragon Naturally Speaking came out shortly thereafter....I could be wrong, It's been a while and I was a teenager back then.
Sure, the response is quicker...some times, we are network bound now....and it is a slight bit more accurate, they used to be trained to you....and thank GOD it doesn't require the training sessions it used to, though that reduces flexibility for accents and dialects....but...it's the same god-damned trick. Siri is no different, it's just a slightly (very slightly) more thoughtful implementation of the same 20+ year old technology except now we are server bound which, on Sprint, can be a horrifying experience at times.
I do think this is one of the many "next steps", but, it still hasn't gone gold yet. I'm a little surprised that Apple put out beta software. Especially given that it's been beta for 20 years now. There is no end game. It's infinitely incremental improvement....perhaps that is why. Though I think it is more telling that Apple felt they needed something ostensibly "this big" to compete that they were willing to put out beta software.
Interesting times....
I'm not gonna lie I love Siri for things like setting alarms, meetings, reminders, and calendar events. Stuff like that is helpful and quick but I don't need it to text for me or read me texts or search for me.
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but "Majel" could refer to Majel Barrett Roddenberry, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. She was and still often is the voice of Starfleet's computers.
its funny we look schizo talking into our PHONES... I think its the note-passing tween girl 'social' networking market that keeps not talking on our phones alive... imagine if people were on an old corded phone talking to all their friends as much as people text now... I know I would throw that person out if my house... anyways... I like voice recognition for driving... and I talk texts all the time in my work van... dreaming of sideswiping the idiots texting while driving... seriously... doing makeup/shaving while driving is bad enough... but texting is just silly... youre not that important, get over yourself... I dont care who you are. Heres an idea... here in WA state, we have a distracted driving law... poorly enforced... it would be AWESOME if those who got caught texting while driving had the transcripts of the conversation read aloud in court... and hopefully published if funny enough.
grrrr... phones are for hacking not idle conversation!
I still don't understand why Siri is even this big of a discussion like Matty said, it'd be much faster to do it manually then to wait on a robot.

Ways for this to blow Siri out of the water:
Use Majel Roddenbury's voice from Star Trek licensed from her son
Integrate Siri-like voice commands to an API for IP-remote applications for Google TV and other Smart TVs
This would pretty much steal the thunder away from any Apple TV rumor
its gonna be tuff apple fanboys stick around no matter how much better google shows it is

Hey guys I want to know your opinion. I'm due for an upgrade on my line. I already have a galaxy S3 and love it. I was holding out for whatever Samsung puts out next like the note. With the piss ants win this could possibly lead to there phones being banned in the U. S. Watching the news they were saying the judge in around 3 weeks from now can possibly stop all sales on galaxy devices in the U.S. Should I run out and use my upgrade or is this highly unlikely and the cry baby's won't get there way again. Maybe I'm being paranoid but the way they made it sound on the news made it seem like it's possible. It's a shame apple wins and we all loose, however this is just going to make them out innovate apple that much faster. As they said on XDA TV they may have awaken the sleeping giant. Long live Google and Samsung. I'm such a fan boy lol.. But at least I'm not a I phone user who lies to themselves. Take care community
How old are you?
71
Look man I'm a bitter android enthusiasts who sick of seeing apple trying to sue Samsung in every country for the past couple years. This screws the U.S consumer. Maybe I've got issues but I won't be the only bitter person if they stop sales on galaxy devices in the U.S. And yes this possible can happen the judge will rule on it in 3 weeks

I think the ban would be for older phone's so don't worry.
It would take an entirely new case stretched over months before a ban of current devices would take effect. No need to worry yet but the fact that this sets a precedent it pretty unsettling.

Yes the average person trying to do the jobs of actually engineers. They have no idea what they were talking about. This is just a proxy war against Google. They didn't find the tab infringed but the phone did? Also they didn't find apple guilty for anything when they clearly were. O well like I said before it's just going to make Samsung out innovate them that much quicker. Let the truth be told, we need them to compete against each other so we have more innovation. This Leeds to super computers in your pocket for under 200$.

Appeals are in the works and they are planning for multiple scenarios. This won't go down easy. There was an article somewhere saying that this was the best exposure for Samsung in terms of advertising because people are able to see that if the Samsung and iPhone products are the same and they can get the Samsung for cheaper, they will opt for cheaper.

What I don't understand is how the Jury was so proud that they did not read the instructions from the judge and went ahead to fill out 700 questions is less than 2.5 days,
I thought the entire point of a jury was to deliberate and come to a conclusion based on the evidence presented. The jury also stated they wanted to set a precedent and make an example of out Samsung, I wonder ho many of the use Ipads and Iphones...a Jury's job isn't to make an example but be fair and unbiased.
Sounds like the jury was pretty damn biased to me, there are a lot of legal experts saying that this will be overturned maybe even in this trial based on the jury's behavior. If not this trial, then most definitely the appeals court should overturn their verdict.
Essentially everything Lucky Koh does, the appeals court overturns.
I think Samsung should sue the US Patent Office, clearly they didn't check anything before granting useless patent after patent.
Probably some idiot working there who just check to see if all the boxes were checked and the paperwork was their, then they granted based on that.
How else can anyone say a rectangle with curved corners is patent-able
Alright enough with the rant.
Long Live Samsung and Android.
I love android and all products associated but I hate to say it, it's pretty obvious Samsung used many elements from ios to skin android with touchwiz. If you can't see the obvious you're delusional at best.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment:
One could argue that the way Apple made their iPhone is really the best way a phone could be made. Therefore, Samsung had no choice but to make it look and sound the best, it just happened to come out looking like the iPhone... but with a totally different operating system, and much more improved IMHO.

I've been an Apple user since my parent's bought the first Mac when it debuted; sure I was like 5 but I grew up on Macs.
I've never owned an iPhone but have seriously considered it, researched it and chose Android for a number of reasons. I upgraded to the E4GT last year, most of my friends and family worship at the church of the iPhone and upon seeing the E4GT every single iPhonatic was blown away by how much better it is than their device.
Which brings me to today's announcement: I couldn't be less impressed-- the days of Apple innovation seem like a distant memory. The most impressive thing that Apple showcased today is that it has the world's greatest public relations team; I couldn't be more impressed by their PR machine.
Also, in reading many mainstream news articles about the new iPhone I've seen a plethora of quotes from stock analysts about the device's hardware and design but only a few quotes from tech experts; it's very telling that the only people raving about it are those with a vested interest in seeing the stock price go up.

Exactly right about Apple "getting up to par" with current Android devices, but IMO I think they failed to do that today. I think the S3 is a better device.
I'd choose my current E4GT running JB with Google Now over the new iPhone and Siri (leaving the 4G LTE out if the evaluation).
Like I said in my OP I've been an Apple fan/user my whole life and don't want this thread to focus on bashing Apple rather look at the real facts beyond the world's best hype machine.

I'm still not convinced that Google Now is a match for Siri, to me it's comparing Kiwi and lemons. What makes the iPhone stand out is what has always made it standout, the how noob friendly it is, to us geeks who hack our phones it seems outdated and almost childish, but to users like my mom who just want a simple non-customizable phone that does what they tell it too every time the iPhone is perfect. That's always been what Apple is, magnificent hardware(If slightly behind the curve), dumbed down UI, and the sole focus being user experience out of the box.

I agree that the hardware is impressive but the integration you mention is only fully realized if you're using a Mac; the majority of customers are Windows users and the integration isn't as seamless- if you've ever run iTunes on a Mac and then used it in a Windows OS you know exactly what I mean. Whereas innovations like Play Music and almost every Google/Android gapps is seamlessly integrated and able to be accessed anywhere.
I am most impressed by Apple's incredible PR team and wonder why Google or Samsung isn't trying to hire every member of Apple's PR staff. A good example of the skills of their team: the same megapixel camera we have had on the E4GT for a year (including our panoramic capabilities) is being hyped as an innovative wow factor.
Wait, i have a question since you wanted a discussion.
How can you say blah when you said you have never owned one and what you know is by paper only?
Take this phone for example. How many people are so impressed by white papers but once they get the phone they then say "blah"?...

You're absolutely right about it being noob friendly (just wait until they allow the Jitterbug as a provider offering it LOL).

No it doesn't.
How are you going about classifying them all as "hipsters"? Just by how they dress?
Absolutely, thats 90% of what hipsteresis is......wearing ugly clothes and being unproductive (unless your a hipster and consider building a junk fish tank productive in this case)

Yeah, how about a little truth in advertising- they should be commercials about pale-skinned kids complaining about not getting a good signal because they are living in their parent's basement. Geesh- move to the attic already! Perhaps it's not a coincidence that the iphone is 23% slimmer and skinny jeans are in vogue?
I guess that's why I don't watch too much TV. If they replaced all the hipsters with regular nerds, I would be complaining because none of the nerds were using linux.
So to answer your question, I didn't see the commercials of which you speak, but that won't prevent me from opining about them in a public forum.

I also don't really find sarah silverman hot, but to each their own.

I believe the original hipsters where greasers from the 50's, with the jeans and leather jackets...think its just mutated since then...also hipsters have a know it all arrogance, like if you don't know about a certain book, they are too cool to tell you about it.

As a rule, American mainstream chocolates are disgustingly sugary confections designed to make you gag.
Please don't break me off a piece of that KitKat Bar. :silly:
How about Android Diabetes Type 1, six months later to be followed by Diabetes Type 2?

And why not?
It is an extremely cynical move by two massive megacorp companies (both with troubled ethical histories) betting LOTS of money on people being brainless stupid herdable sheep. Instead of calling me cynical, you should feel a bit affronted at Google....because both these corps are saying very blatantly that they think we consumers are brainless programmable robots who will jump when asked.
Google and Nestle can claim no money was traded hands all they want...but there was quid pro quo, you can bet your entire lifetime earnings and savings there was.
I don't like eating chocolates now a days but Kit Kat is very relatable and very marketable.

That statement is crap and heres why everyone has a choice to do or in this case eat whatever or however much of somthing too much water is harmful to your health. So please stop saying americans cause like I said everyone has a choice. And for the fact I was born in Jamaica and live in America

Honestly great marketing ploy. Hope it works out well for both products. I'm not a fan of KitKat. I don't like the crunchy center crap. But hey, why not.
Now if it were Reese's peanut butter cups, now those I love. And it's not even the chocolate of it. It's their peanut butter that I like.

Ohhh just like Apple, INC. Put it in colors, change a letter and sell another billion of them. Brainless programmable robots will line up for days. If you can't beat them, join them.
Haven't seen a single one yet. All normal kit kat bars in stores.
With the horrible Halloween coming up, all the candy is starting to have a halloween theme. A good idea on google's part, but perhaps poorly timed.
i really hate people using the word "sheep" like they're not one also. we're all sheep, and choose which flock to run with. saying that, real sheep actually care what they call the new os. tech guys shouldn't give a crap what they call it as long as it's offers improvements.
Yeah cause Hershey would just promote android on all of their packages for free...

Agree and disagree:
I disagree with you about the sheep analogy. We are not all sheep choosing flocks to follow. Sheep are herd animals and humans are pack animals (at least this used to be true). The iSheep represent the ever growing part of humanity that has made the transformation into herd animals. I, and many of us here, refuse to be transformed by media/advertizing/image consultants into a bleating wooly douchebag. The analogy for those like me would be that of the wolf; a pack animal who, whether alone or with his pack, will divide the herd and eventually bite and eat one of them.
I agree that it doesn't matter what branding Android 4.4 has...I've always referred to version anyway

Is this REALLY worth debating?

Like CHZECK said, version and improvements are all that matter. They can call it ANDROID VERSION CRAP 2.0 for all I care, as long as they fix the bugs, improve the user experience and put APPLE out of business, I am happy!

Lol yea if apple went out of business I probably would smile. But I doubt it. Unless all android phone make you feel like your apart of a society than its not happening. The only manufacturer that makes you feel as though your part of a society like apple is Samsung. Which is why I like their phones. People see Iphone. And think upper class, sophistication, and belonging. Which gives them a sense of belonging to a group of elite. I mean who dont want to walk around feeling like their worth a million bucks with year old tech smh. We look at Samsung and see innovation, future, and a sense of belonging to a group of intellectual individuals even though on xda some people make me wonder with questions like whats rooting or a kernel, But they have a profile lol. Since Samsung set a stepping stone on what sales and devices should look like htc, lg and everyone else is really stepping it up. So apple may be in trouble in the future but as of right now. There to many zombies for them to sell to.... my bad for the essay

I personally don't want to see Apple go out of business. I like competition. I think it actually benefits us consumers.
Personally, I don't think Samsung is the bee's knees or anything, but they do make a few products I enjoy, such as the Galaxy Note series smartphone. My enjoy derives nothing from Apple's products. I like they're Android, are rootable with fair ease, have SD card slots, pullable batteries, and actually make the phablet one of the flagship phones, instead of an after though like many other companies.
I'm not an Apple fan. I don't know about the company now with CEO Cook, but under Jobs reign, they were able to make things people found useful and wanted. I don't think they really came up with many ideas that were original, but found the right delivery of it. Plus, since Apple tries to just make everything work, that's that many less people who's electronics I ultimately end up fixing; it gets irritating always fixing other people's crap because they don't have a clue.

Yea the competition is fun. I use to be an apple fan but I've always been more of a fan of customizations. When android came out I was torn because I mean you could customize a iphone 3g and 3gs at the time when jail broken. But android had launchers icons. Colors, mp3 ringtone makers. Rooting, and constantly adding more features. I actually waited for apples response. Now so many years later. Their finally responding with a more customizable ui its to late. Im done with them. Plus I saw people happy as **** that they could swipe their Iphone cross registers and pay for gas all with nfc enabled I laughed. Only because my S3 was doing that while the Iphone 4 was still on 3g like its 3g/s predecessor. Lol or my e4gt was rocking 4g wimax. It's kinda crazy though because in the tortoise and hare race. Apple the tortoise was winning the race with out dated tech smh. Apple is a cult lol
