What's the best os that can be ran in live mode to compile a kernel with? I don't want to install linux over my windows installation.

Grab virtual box. And virtualize Ubuntu. No. Need to mess with your main system. Are also compiling the OS.

Why don't you just reboot into recovery and flash the zip?
I wonder as well how to do this. What if my SD card takes a crap and I don't have another. How to install a custom kernel via ADB ?

I an building a rom and want to scrap the stock kernel and replace it with a custom kernel. In other words, I want to pre load a custom kernel into a stock based rom. I want to do this from my pc. Any idea how to do this?

How do I root the SGS2 on Linux?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D using XDA Premium App
I believe people have used odin on linux using a windows emulator.
I found this post that talks about running odin in linux via virtual box. U can give that a shot.

This wont root the phone for him. He will have to run Odin to install cwm & flash a rooted rom or run zergrush on the stock 2.3.5 rom

Yes I know. It a program so he can do it on a mac
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Not sure that alone will do, he needs the Samsung drivers. To avoid issues just bootcamp windows and root there, that's how I did mine

This has been asked and answered here previously, (1,2).
The file mentioned in the post above is a Wineskin wrapper for the Windows Odin program to run on Mac OSX. In other words it's the Windows Odin program running on Wine, on Mac OSX. However, the person that developed it posted this thread over on the android forums and the folks there that tried it, state that it didn't work. (Probably because the Wine emulation doesn't provide correct access to the USB ports).
To the OP, currently the only way to root the SGH-T989 is by using the Windows only program Odin. (The cross platform program Heimdall may be able to in the future, but right now there's this bug that keeps it from correctly accessing the SGH-T989). So this means if you have a Mac OSX computer, you need to install a full Windows OS. Either a multiboot installation of OSX and Windows using Boot Camp, or a full Windows OS, running in a Virtual Machine, like Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox. In terms of running Odin in Windows VM, this post describes success using Parallels, this post success using VMWare Fusion, and I posted here, that I successfully rooted my SGH-T989 using VirtualBox on Linux, (it should work similarly on OSX).
Good Luck..

I have a Win7 virtual machine installed on my Mac using VMware just for my occasional need for windows only apps, I booted into the VM and rooted 3 SGSII using that method. Virtualbox(free) should also work, but I haven't tried it.
Have yet to delve into installing different kernels, and any options on best ones and anyone know any walk thru for kernel install using mac?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Kt747 kernel is the best option. Either that or lean kernel.
How to install with a Mac:
1. Don't
How to install with your phone:
1. Download kernel to phone.
2. Boot to recovery
3. Flash the kernel
4. Wipe cache
5. Fix permissions
6. Reboot
7. ...
8. Profit

Pretty new at all this android stuff (hence the mac usage, had every iPhone except the 5 cause let's face it.... Iphones suck) do you have a link for the lean kernel?

I'm trying to use the online CWM builder from this site http://builder.clockworkmod.com to port CWM to a new device
I already have my recovery.img and recovery.fstab files
I still need the graphics.c and post-recovery.sh files but I can't seem to find them, any ideas where to look?

You don't need Graphics and post-recovery files to compile

Thanks, i just needed some extra peace of mind to make sure i didn't break anything. I can't even flash it anyway since my device is running a production build. I think i need to compile a user-debug or engineering build from source to be able to flash cwm. Linux is a whole new world to me though, i'm getting so lost loll

The graphics file is needed. Our device uses a non-standard graphics format.
To OP: You can find that file in KB's PAC-Man repo or in the official CM repo of i9103.

I think i need some help here
Device has root access in UI and terminal.
Entering adb root from my computer spits out an error about not having root access in production builds.
If i enter adb shell, then su-l, i get root, but when mounting any of the read only filesystems i get the same error as above.
Trying to apply any update.zip from sd card(even a signed one) fails due to signature checks(i think i need the oem Hp signature).
Android recovery 3a version 4.1
Bootloader is locked and fastboot devices lists nothing.
What should i do from here?
