Why don't you just reboot into recovery and flash the zip?
I wonder as well how to do this. What if my SD card takes a crap and I don't have another. How to install a custom kernel via ADB ?

I an building a rom and want to scrap the stock kernel and replace it with a custom kernel. In other words, I want to pre load a custom kernel into a stock based rom. I want to do this from my pc. Any idea how to do this?

Compile the kernel then use koushes "any kernel flasher" to flash the kernel through recovery

Yesterday I installed a ROM for the first time. Today I would like to try a different Kernel. How do I just install JUST the kernel ?

Kernels are flashed same way you flashed the ROM. Put it on your SD card, boot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvix x2, and install from SD card.
will i have to install the rom also all over again ?
No. You wont have to reinstall the ROM.

perhaps this will be of help. this is for CM6, but the steps are the same for Sense ROMs.

Make sure that if u have a sense rom, u have a sense kernel.. if u ever get bootloops just reflash the rom and the kernel will be replaced

Most roms include the kernal, if they need something they will let you know generally.

Assuming you're just trying to revert to a previous kernel...you'll have to re-flash your kernel of choice.

Install another one, if its a bonsai based rom you'll have to flash the whole rom over again. If you want the stock kernel same thing, flash the whole rom.
My Sg2 won't let me back up rom's on rom manager. And I can flash rom's. Any tips?

I personally don't like ROM manager. If you are rooted I would say flash a custom recovery and back up ROMs from there. If you ever brick your phone you can still access recovery while you can't access ROM manager.
About the not being able to back up ROMs, check the backup location or your settings. The rom might not also include that feature. CWM recovery is the way to go for all of that.
OK thanks will try soon.

ROM manager does not play nice with our phones. Look for sfhub's auto root sticky, in there you will find an option to add CWM. Backup from there

If you flashed the latest Samsung Touchwiz 4.2.2 UVUAMDL stock firmware and replaced
the kernel with a modified or custom one then you are surely going to loose root access
and you will need to re-root the phone.
Good luck!

There's not an easier way?
I'm just trying to get the stock kernel on, instead of my current custom kernel

Generally speaking, flash, clear both caches and reboot. Some say fix permissions also. Either way should work.
