Ok, I just plugged my phone into a front USB port on my computer I havent used in forever. My PC locked up, and I had to reboot. So taking it as a bad sign, I plugged the phone into the rear port as usual, and now I get a message saying that the device I plugged in has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. Tried this on 3 different pc's. 1 Windows 7, and 2 Windows XP machines.
I have rebooted the phone several times now, but still the phone will charge through usb and wall charge, but it will not do adb commands, nor will it access the SD card when I select it in the notifications menu. It also will not sync with HTC Sync.
So im at a loss here guys, ive done some reading, but I didnt see anything that is similar with a solution. Any help?

B. Swapped to different PC, complete with different Operating system-- Fail
C. Swapped to different SD Card-- Fail
D. Double wiped all Data/Cache and tried several different roms-- Fail
E. Tried an OTA having unrevoked forever installed-- Fail
F. Pulled battery for 15+ minutes-- Fail
G. Tried the [ How-To ] Fix SD card not being detected & USB port not working Posted by Calkulin and thanks to sruon for the fix, found here-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243 But also Failed.
I will update the list and Try any other ideas as well. Just wanted it to be easier for the "Quick fix" people to get a summary. Just because these failed for me, doesnt mean they will for you.
Also, ive just found when attempting to send an MMS, my SD card is mounted read only... WTH is going on here?
Swapped out the SD card for a different one, no go still.
Double wiped factory, cache, dalvik, and EXT, reinstalled Warm 2.2, the problem persists. Fried hardware???
Here is the windows message I get when I plug the phone in.

Have you tried a different usb cable, many people that have reported problems with their phones usb connection ended up being a bad cable and not the phone.
I could try that tomorrow I guess. I have a second cable at work. Thats about the last thing I could think of to try also. Just plugged in the wife's Hero to get my files off of my SD card, and her phone works on the Windows 7 pc, but she uses a different cable.
Thanks you very much for the direction. I will update the thread tomorrow with the results in case this happens to someone else.
No go. Tried a different cable, and whole other computer and I get the same message. I even flashed a different rom before bed also. Anyone else have any idea? Anything I can do to get a diagnosis off this thing to help the troubleshooting process? Thanks in advance!
It's really starting to sound like a hardware issue. Have you had problems with anything else after using that USB port?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
No, havent used that port in a good while. It was the front port I decided to use yesterday, as my back block is full. SD card is still useable it seems. I grabbed a rom last night and had to pop my SD card in my wife's Hero to get it. But I put the SD card back in my EVO and it worked. Just no USB connectivity. I should be glad I can still charge it I guess.
On a side note, when I put my evo on the usb at work, it loaded drivers first, said the device was ready to use, then popped up with the message from the above post. What could that mean?
The same thing happened to my MyTouch3g, my motherboard blew when I plugged in the phone and it semi-fried the phone too. My sd card still worked, the phone still charged, but nothing would happen when I plugged on the phone to a computer on both ends. T-Mobile deemed it defective USB and sent me a replacement.

Until you get this all figured out, use the app "adb wireless"to do any adb commands. Also, obviously, you can plug your SD card into the computer directly.

I havent tried it in recovery. That might also be a good idea. Ive been getting used to putting my SD card in my wife's Hero in the mean time to get files on/off..... I dont have a sd card reader unfortunately. I did also find a terminal emulator probably similar to what you are talking about. It has suited my needs thus far.
I thought about a return, but its been 6 months or so, my phone is all hacked to hell, and I dont really have the means to turn it back at this point with the lacking usb. Ill just deal with it til January when the wife's phone is up for upgrade. I can snag her upgrade, hand my phone to her as she never plugs her phone into usb. She wont miss it.
LOTS of people are having this problem and I've googled it for a couple hours on two occassions with NO solution.... and I'm pretty good at finding answers... see
win7secrets.com for example...
anyway, when I first got my EVO in July I simply plugged in the usb and put on about a half dozen of my favorite mp3's ... while on christmas break I decided to add some more stuff and got that stupid malfunction error... I turned off usb debugging as some had suggested and tried other suggestions including making sure it was on disk drive... not sync or recharge... and tried on 3 separate computers... one of which it worked flawlessly before. I'm thinking this screwup was cause by updating the firmware or some other update... I suppose it could have been screwed up by installing an application but I've only put on 3 aps that I can think of... instamapper, advanced task manager and pandora. I really don't think it's going to fix the problem to unistall those aps but I removed instamapper anyway. Hopefully someone will figure out a solution because I'm deep in the woods and there is no sprint store within 2 hours.... and even if there was I doubt anyone there could tell me anything other thant he price of another phone.
I love this phone though but I can't figure out why it comes setup with all those "features" like facebook, flicker, footprints, peep, field stream, amazon and a ton of crap I don't want. WHY oh WHY can't programmers understand it's MY frigging phone? Give ME the option of what I want to drain my battery.
In all those reboots, was there ever a time where you had the battery pulled for longer than 2 minutes? Sometimes hardware does get borked but clearing voltage over time clears it up. Try that. If that doesn't work, I would recommend installing forever and then a shipped RUU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865204
Scroll down to Common Problems.
Use the directions to restore USB / SD card functionality.
If that does not work. Uninstall HTC Sync, and any ADB / HBOOT / HTC drivers. Reinstall HTC sync.

You can turn syncs to manual so you can choose when you want an update. You can flash custom ROMs to get rid of the bloatware. And I completely agree. Sprint should make it so that their software is optional as a separate download. It is something they say they are going to implement.

Show #15. Interview with Sprint's vice president of product development.
I have indeed tried pulling out the battery for a longer period than 15 minutes, no dice. I have also tried both methods in the "Restoring USB" thread. Also a no go. Ive had Forever installed on this phone for a good while, installed an RUU but this did not solve my issue, nor did Wiping windows on my pc, reinstalling all the drivers/SDK stuff. I think in my case, anyways, I just happened to fry my hardware.
On a side note, I have found an app on the market so I dont have to swap my SD card to my wifes phone to get new roms and updates. Its called Wifi File Explorer. Only works if you have a wifi connection with a computer at your disposal. Pair that with a terminal emulator, and it has been sufficient to my needs. I just try not to do anything too crazy or untested with my phone til next month, when I can grab a new one, and swap this one over to my wife.
This is the post I found btw http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
Thanks to Calk for that ray of hope!
Hope some of this experience helps others.

Sounds like you fired your board. I think you have done everything there is to do to try and fix that. I only have a suggestion for file swapping. I use DropBox for everything. I get tired of moving the cable back and forth. Also these little micro usb ports are like the hardware buttons, they have a breakdown time. The less you use it the longer it will last. I just wait till I'm at home with wifi or in 4G area before trying larger files. Plus there is an app for it
I will try dropbox, sounds good. Thank you for the info!

I am trying to upload a new ROM to my phone but i am having problems with it being recognised by my PC.
Firewall is switched off on my PC.
USB to PC settings on phone set to prompt me and default to ActiveSync.
PC not finding the Memory Card also as a drive.
Hard-Reset also performed with no joy.
Nothing is happening however other than charging. This is the same on all PC's i have tried.
Any ideas how i can get it working??

If you find a solution, tell me!
Mine won't sync either, no matter what I try, so I've resorted to using a BT USB for syncing/file transfer. I have to flash via SD card and won't be able to use Task29 until it's set up to work via SD card either.

You can enter bootloader and then plug in the usb. This way you don't need to sync with active sync Task29 runs this way.

Nope, that won't work for me. When I enter the bootloader, it says 'serial' in the white portion at the bottom instead of 'usb'. No amount of hard resets clears this up for me.
Thanks, though.

There's good news and bad...
I had this problem, the good news is that I think it's fixed now, the bad news is it involve a trip to HTC. I flashed back to stock and still had the problem, called HTC who agreed it was probably a h/w fault, they piucked it up, repaired it and it's in a UPS van on it's way back to me as I type.
Until it comes back I can't confirm they really have repaired it, or what they've done to fix it.

Thanks so much, Gordon. Please let me know how it worked out for you and what costs were involved.
I'm sure, at some point, I will have to bite the bullet and get mine fixed as well.

I have the same problem.
After all, I find that the USB port of the phone is bad, i.e. some pins are brocken.
After changing the USB port, I solved the problem.

Just to make sure, did you set Activesync to use the slower method? When I upgraded my ROM I had to use the slow method in order for my Windows 7 to see the new ROM.
guys i have the same prob and i bought it from USA unlocked Stock Asian Rom and Now i am in Pakistan.I had some major issues with it.It just stopped syncing one day.Have tried everything. The battery usage also increased dramatically(it dies in 10 hrs after a full recharge)I thought it was a virus but now i think its hardware.I think i'll send it for warranty claim.
I just went through this on my VZW TP2. A month ago it began syncing slowly or not at all, very sporadic, and after messing with it for two hours it began working again. I tried everything except a hard-reset, including reinstalling ActiveSync, changing cables, etc. It happened again earlier in the week and an hour with HTC on the phone couldn't revive it. I called VZW and had a new phone in two days, and we're now up and running again.
I tried BT sync at one time but didn't like having to click multiple times to get it going every time I got within range. There doesn't seem to be a way to have it sync automatically or with one button.
I have the Tmo TP2 and SAME issue, I luckily am getting a new one from Tmo, but I am really starting to think something more is going on here........... I am not convinced ALL OF US, even a lot on PPC geeks, same exact issue? different carriers? come on........... I am glad I am getting a new one, but I would really love to know the root cause of this. IT SEEMS VERY VERY VERY MUCH LIKE THE "TRANSFER DATA" option if "turned off" (if you will), not a physical hardware failure. Kinda like you can turn that option off in windows to not allow USB storage devices to connect, you can still connect other devices (mice, keyboards) or charge things (like our phone) but the computer will NOT see it there at all!!! I really think something like that is happening IN our phones!!! hundreds of us bend the same pin(s). Too wierd.
I hade the same problem!
After trying everything I finally opened up the phone. In the phone I found some dust particles on the usb pins on the board, I cleaned it up and now the sync works again.
NO Sync with Windows 7
I have the same issue with my Win 7 machine...... PC does not even see the Phone at all. Plug it into my Windows XP machine and it's perfect, connects everytime, using the same cable. i have tried everything i can find on the internet and multipal forums, still no Joy! Works great on Win xp, so i think it is a problem with win 7 drivers.....
Still searching for an answer........
Oh, by the way it was working for months, just stopped one day....i even wiped out my pc and reloaded it, no Joy!
I'm starting to have the same issues on my AT&T Tilt 2 but sporadically. Every now and then I lose the phone in MS activesync. I have to delicately place the phone on the table and gently insert the USB cable into the back of the phone in order for it to sync up with my PC. If I move any of the cables or phone, it will drop the connection. I tied several different cables and PC's so I ruled that out. The problem seems to be the USB port on the phone.
Its been almost a year since I've had this phone so I want to get that fixed. If I were to call AT&T and inform them of this would they replace the phone or would they fix the problem with the port and send me the phone back?

I'm not sure what your warranty is from AT&T, but HTC normally has a 15 month warranty on the device. Go through AT&T if you can first. The carriers will normally ship you a replacement device before you send yours in. HTC's repair process is generally very lengthy as they actually repair your device and then send it back to you rather than shipping you a refurbished unit like carriers normally do.
As far as it not connecting, try a different connection method like BirdieSync and Thunderbird. I use this combo on my PC (W7 Pro x64), and it works wonderfully every time.
I'd love to know if there's a fix for the following that a simple git like me can apply.
This has happened more than once to me, normally when I can get to my home and fix the problem. Not so this time: I'm away from home this weekend, that, as they say, is that.
This evening, the card got corrupted somehow as I tried to play some music to a freind, effectivly bricking most of the aps I use on the damn phone (I run them from the card to preserve available memory for use on the phone). I'm not at all happy, and it would appear to be a fault with the filing system under winmob.
The phone's running WM6.1 as I'm NOT able or competent to change/flash the OS (I'm a basic user, not a whizz kid). 16 gigs of card just went. that's ALL my music, two GPS survey applications, two SATNAV applications, all my reference documentation in PDF format, and so on. Thank God I've backed the damn thing up at home.
Unless someone can show me a definitive and permenant fix for this FUBAR, it's definate that the next phone I get will therefore NOT use WinMob, it'll use Linux or something similar.
I am NOT impressed.
the last time i had winmo corrupt an SD card was back in 2003 when it was windows mobile 2003 SE. I was using a torrent app and running multiple downloads at the same time.
So i'd suspect several read/writes happening at the same time to cause it being currupted.
I currently install the majority of my apps on SD and have all my navigation maps on it as well and haven't had an issue.
What kind of SD card to you have? maybe its at fault.
Thanks for the reply.
I was only trying to access a single music track on the card at the time, so multiple accesses shouldn't be an issue. It's a SanDisk 16 Gig MicroSD card. My previous phone was a Sable (hw6915), and I never once had any form of ram card problems with that.
Any ideas?

Definatly sounds like you just got a bad SD card... especially if it happens often.
On a side note. The available memory is there TOO install the aps to your device. What's the point in having its stay available. Dont confused available memory with available ram which will dictate how quick/smooth your phone runs. The only times I've had issues with available program memory is when I have my phone loaded up with tons of aps and go to install something crazy big.
Also, aps tend to run quicker off your device as opposed to the SD card. If I'm wrong on that someone else can chime in.
Obviously you'll want to keep all your music and pdf and gps maps and such on the SD card. But... yeah.. sounds like you just got a bad card. In no way is it normal to have a card corrupt more then a few times over the life span. Hell I've had an 8 gig card for a few years now and I've not had one issue with it.
My advice, purchase a new card and bring all your backups to the new card.
edit: On a side note... can you put your card in someone else phone and see if their phone is able to read it in the condition it is in? Or when you do put it into a computer if it just simply says it needs to be formated.
You're the only person I have ever really heard that has this issue. Sorry I do hope it works out for you!
It can be read by the PC no problems, I just read it in there an hour ago or so after getting back home again (I try to drive long distances at night, when the roads here in the UK are quieter!).
Yeah, I was afraid someone was going to comment on it being a duff card. Oh, well. Guess it's time to shell out for another card, this time, I think, from a different manufacturer, if there is one.
Got any recommendations?
If its a legit sandisk you shouldn't be having issues with it. Did you buy it off ebay or a chinese site? they're known to sell fake SD cards and i think sandisk has a page on their site about how to spot fakes.
Maybe try getting everything off the card, check it for bad clusters and re-format it (not the quick format). Meineyss (sp?) has a guide written somewhere on xda-devs about the preferred format for winmo sd cards. ( i think its fat32, someone correct me if i'm wrong.)
Should be a legit one - I bought it from the same bricks and mortar shop that I bought the phone from.
I've reformatted the damn thing at least three times in the six months I've had it, each time using Fat32; Never checked for bad clusters (and don't know how either - any help appreciated, thanks). I'll look up that guide, again, thanks.
OK, searched extensively, even looked for the member id, no joy - any ideas where that article is?
I'm sure you formatted your card by now. I used to have a problem with my Tilt where it would appear all of the programs vanished from my card but really they were still there. If I checked the memory left on the card I would see the card was not empty.
I found out the problem occured if there was a reset while the phone was accessing the card. If I went to the program that was last accessing the card it would somehow restore everything. Mostly this would happen if I was istening to music or using TomTom. I don't know if something similar happened to you.
OK, over a year on, but here's the update/closure posting.
The card in question locked itself into read only, somehow; Over the last year, while awaiting my upgrade to mature (there another phrase for this?

), I tried many different ways to fix the issue, and none worked. I even tried reformatting the card several times - no joy.
So, the card had to be written off, which was a hell of a shame, but at least I had the contents backed up.
I am now convinced that this was an issue to do with the way that Windows Mobile addressed data on memory cards; I just don't know how to go about proving it.
So, when upgrade time arrived, I decided that it was time to bin the issue, and change OS. Don't get me wrong: The Touch Pro 2 is an excellent phone, and did me proud in its performance over the two years I used it; however, with the lack of - and how I hate this word - new applications (why can't they be called Software packages, it's what they are, after all?) being developed for WinMob 6.x, it was time for a change.
As you can see from the updated signature below, I'm now the proud new owner of an HTC Sensation Z710e Android phone - which came with an 8 Gig card in it, ready to go
And very happy with my new acquisition I am too
Hey all,
So I've had my Tilt2 for a couple months now, and I've been flashing it almost as long but recently I've run into the problem that from searching (WOO!) I can see a lot of other people have had: ActiveSync will not connect with my phone. It charges via the computer but WMDC/ActiveSync do not detect any phone is connected. I've tried two cords on three computers but have had no luck. Unfortunately, I hard reset (in an effort to fix this) the phone and all my contacts are of course gone and thanks to the fact that I only back up messages/call history with PIM backup, the only back up of my contacts is on my computer in Outlook. I can function without being able to resync outlook calendar/tasks/notes to my phone, but I have way too many contacts to add by hand so I need another solution. In addition, I bought the phone refurbed from AT&T as my upgrade, and I think the refurb warranty has ended and I'm leaving the country for the summer in two weeks so I'd rather not spend those two weeks waiting for an HTC engineer to replace the USB port (which from searching, seems to be the issue). Please help me find some other way to get my contacts from Outlook to my phone. THANKS

wiggy-wiggy-wiggy-wassup beatmaster?
I think the easiest solution in your case right now, is to setup phone-to-PC syncing via bluetooth. If your PC doesn't already have bluetooth built-in, you can get an adapter for $15 or less that will be all you need. Once you have that, your phone can connect to the PC that way, and do all the regular sync functions (like restoring your contacts!) that you could do through the USB connection.
Let us know (or PM me) if you need help finding an adapter or getting it setup.

Two things: 1) will syncing that way work if I don't have an already established partnership with my PC? I uninstalled & reinstalled WMDC & tried to remove all possible partnerships because those were suggestions on other threads.
2) somewhat unrelated I just found out that I bought the phone 83 days ago, which puts it within ATT's refurb warranty period (by a week) so I am considering trying to get it replaced, but do I need to reflash it to ATT's rom in order to do so? I.e.: does having a different ROM on the device violate the TOS?
Did you try a different rom? Task 29 and then flash another rom. Then you can make sure its not rom related.

Double Edit: If you CAN flash it via your PC then it is connecting and maybe you just dont have a setting set up right on your phone to synce when active sync is on. When you connect it to your computer does that screen come on asking if you want to use activesync, hard drive or internet sharing?
All in all.. bluetooth might be your best bet instead of ripping apart the phone to replace the usb port. Especially if you cant do anything else. Try a hard resetting AGAIN first though and see if it syncs after that

1) That's a good question...I believe it will, but haven't tested it that way myself
2) Yes, flashing a custom ROM technically voids the warranty, but flashing back to the stock rom AND a stock SPL should get around that no problem (many have reported they still received warranty service by doing that)

I did flash from my SD card, but can I run Task 29 from it & then subsequently flash from it?
In response to the bluetooth suggestions, that isn't working either because from what I can tell, I do in fact, need to have an already established wired connection to make it work. So at this point I need to flash stock roms/radio/SPL to return this puppy to ATT. on that note: I found the stock ROM at http://www.htc.com/us/support/tilt-2-att/downloads/ but where do I get the normal SPL/which radio came with it (or does that part not even matter)?

Nevermind, turns out you can find the SPL to use in the file I downloaded from the HTC website above. Problem solved, calling ATT today to get this replaced. Just thought I'd write my solution down here so that anyone else with a similar problem can see how I figured it out. THANKS FOR THE HELP!
Hi guys - long time lurker, first time poster.
My question is, does anyone have any little grievances with the stock note II software? I've owned android devices before, but ditched them for iOS a year or so ago, back when android was still a hot mess. I definitely believe it's caught up to iOS in terms of stability, performance, and smoothness. I finally feel like android is finally finished enough where I'm ready to take the plunge and pick up a note II.
Things that have driven me mad from previous android phones: audio lag / stuttering, stock software crashing/stuttering, the phone not stopping your music when you pull the headphone plug and blasting audio (even for a half second) through the speaker, stupid pop-up boxes that inform you you've either started or completed charging, etc. etc. etc.
Lazy, stupid developer decisions like this drive me absolutely mad and make me leave a platform that I otherwise consider superior. I want to be happy with stock until a stable CM10 comes out.
Therefore, is there anything like this that happens with the stock note II at all? Thanks - on the fence!
You no longer get a pop up window verifying charging is complete, you do get a notification in the Status Bar though - either connected or finsed.
Audio Lag / stuttering hasnt been around for a while, I remember that in the OG Droid but havnt seen it in along time, I guarantee you that you wont find anything to stutter up the note.
Depending on the application, audio will stop when headphones are removed. Pandora / Stock Music Player / Netflix.. HBO Go - Xfinity - CineM all continue to play when unplugged. " hope that helps"
Battery Life on the Note 2 will blow away any other device out there outside possibly the Razr Maxx "Havnt compared"
Random System crashes are non existent on this device, especialy if you stay stock. Of course going with any customer ROM you can expect something .. I devvelop roms and I promise you, there is ALWAYS room for error, however with that being said, there is always room for error on stock as well.
Overall, I can see why you may have left Android in the beggining, however I will say that Android 4.1 is buttery smooth and I have not experienced any issues as of yet. I am a power user from he** and cant throw enouhg at my phone yet.
oddly enough my biggest complaint with the note II is that it is harder to "share" stuff than on the S3.
on the S3 you have a little SHARE symbol and next to it you have a "default" service that takes you directly into that (and its separate for different media types so youtube is default for example for sharing video)
just tap that and boom your sharing. but on the note II this is gone. you have to tap the share icon and OF COURSE the ones I use imgur and youtube are all the way at the bottom so I have to scroll down and THEN select where I want to share it too. this is surprisingly annoying now that I know "IT CAN" be much easier.
I REALLY want that quick access default icon from the S3 on my Note II. badly.
Here is the Note II see where it says Share Via - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - but on the S3 it looks like this

Video calling seems to be broken
I have noticed that I cannot make video calls with the apps that I've tried. Neither Skype or Fring work on the Note 2. By work I mean I can see the video from the other person, but they cannot see me. Interestingly Google+ hangouts did work, and I have yet to try tango.
I did reproduce the error on an in store Note 2, so I don't think it's just my phone. I'm just running stock rom, not even rooted. It doesn't work over 3g or wifi. I tried connecting to an iphone 4s and a galaxy s III, I could see both of them they could not see me.
I would also like to gripe about the "buddy" pages. I want to be able to edit the icons in that bottom row to be more useful for my purposes. In the headphones buddy page I want to add my video apps, and they do show up over time but it varies based on what I'm using most often. I want to choose to set them.
I have been able to run Skype. I did it as a test as I don't normally and all was fine.

Did you do a video call on skype? I can voice chat fine, it's the video that doesn't work.
2 grievancies that have been noted but no solutions that I'm aware of!
First is the poor commumication between the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (AFTER ROOT) and my PC. I always get Hardware ID Missing which in turn makes it hard to transfer files from my computer to my phone and vice versa since the PC won't recgnize the phone,
and,
Second, is that I can't view my photos as photos from my phone on my PC. My PC goes into the DCIM or photo folders but can't just load the pictures. I must click on each JPG icon to see what the picture is.
I wish that someone would come up with a program that can be a mass storage transfer instead of the MTP.
So far, everything I have seen with this MTP is not good at all.
THOSE are MY grievences!
its worse that that wascapsfan
first your root issue is a new one. I rooted mine ZERO issues with hardware id stuff ?? so something is hinky on your end
back to the pictures YES the MTP protocol is truly horrible. you have ZERO file access on the device. NONE. 100% of all actions result in the file having to be COPIED to the PC first before you can even so much as look at it. no thumbnails no live view NOTHING
this is not a note II issues its a samsung issue with Jellybean and its horrible.
You can't even MOVE files on the SD card. it has to copy them to the PC and then copy them back to the card. takes a freaking eternity and it hard core sucks. big time.

I initially had the Hardware ID error when connecting my phone to my Windows 7 PC as well. I am not rooted, for the record. As odd as this sounds, I solved the problem by removing the drivers for the phone from the PC. After that, it connected fine.
I will add, though, that the drivers are still installed on my work laptop (because I need adb drivers to tether) and it connects just fine to that. All this combined leads me to believe that it is a driver conflict error with some of the other drivers/files on my home PC. I could probably narrow down where the exact cause is, but I just don't care enough to do it since I have found a usable workaround for my situation.
If you still need ADB drivers, I would still suggest uninstalling and seeing if the phone is recognized without the drivers. Could just be a bad install of the drivers, which is something that happens when you use Windows.
On the subject of MTP, I have to agree that I would like to be able to preview photos as well. While I can move them freely (not sure why you wouldn't be able to), not having previews is mildly annoying. It isn't as convenient as seeing the previews in Explorer, but going to the folder, hitting Ctrl-A, and selecting Preview from the context menu at least lets me see the pictures without having to copy them to the computer.

I'm still not understanding the Hardware ID missing thing. I had my first SGN2 for 13 days and it had this trouble only AFTER I rooted. It was fine and had not one issue prior. I gave it back and Sprint gave me another one. No issues UNTIL I rooted.
Install the drivers, then remove the drivers, then reinstall the drivers, etc..... It's not me, I know that is for sure.
Trust me you CAN NOT move them "freely" you just THINK you are moving them.
when you move a few photo's you don't even notice. trying moving 9gigs of photo's and let me know how it goes.
when you MOVE a file in MTP you not MOVING it. the process is like this.
it copies the file from the phone to your computer.
Deletes the file on the phone.
Copies the file from the computer back to the phone
deletes the file on the computer.
this is why MOVING 9 gigs from one folder to another (which should take 1-5 seconds tops) takes the same time as copying 18gigs. because it has to do it TWICE. so in essence it really IS moving 18 gigs. (same files twice)
this means you CAN NOT "access" any files ON the MTP device "live" it has to copy them to the PC first before you can "interact" with them beyond properties or renaming.
its an absolutely HORRID interface.
you can not even LOOK at a picture on the device you have to COPY it to the PC first. when you access a file its just DOING this for you in the background without you knowing it.
you finally "know it" when you try to perform an operation that should take 5 second and it takes 41 minutes. (move mp3's from one folder to another)
this also means using the phone as a drive is no longer feasible. I used to plug the phone into the computer and PLAY a video from the phone on my laptop screen (using the phone as a usb drive) and at the same time I get a charge.
now I can't even do that I have to COPY the file TO the computer first and THEN watch it.
At least you Windows people can somewhat access your files. On both my Macs neither my SIII or NoteII are recognized in any shape or form. I have to use a wifi explorer app, or unmount and stick my sd directly in the comp. Dunno why they changed from Universal Mass Storage which worked completely fine...
cause they are MORONS. no other reason is valid in my book. morons.
I have the hardware ID error too. From what I've read about it, people are seeing that after installing the Samsung drivers from ToolKit prior to rooting.

Not to derail the thread, but aren't there two easy potential workarounds for this?
1. Use Dropbox/Goggle+, enable automatic upload of camera shots. Photos will be available instantly on home computer. Yes, you're not manipulating the phone images directly, but you've got direct access to copies of the files.
2. Save photos to SD card, pull card and put in card reader. Direct access to files.
True, accessing via USB cable would be nice alternative to have, but it's not like we don't have options.
Grievances with the stock OS ROM/software:
-Intentional gimping of the multiwindow menu by Samsung. Damn it I should be able to put any app I want to in that menu. Plain and simple. Most work in multiwindow just fine. Further, that damn toggle should have transparency be default...NOTHING more annoying than reading something and having text obscured due to idiotic UI.
-Intentional gimping of stock Touchwiz to forbid any selection/addition/subtraction of quick controls in the status bar. NO reason for it. Zero zip nada.
-Kies software. Neat idea. Works pretty well...but gawd, why did they have to build it on the steaming pile of insecure poo known as Java? I would love to permanently delete Java off my computer and Kies is the one reason I have to keep it.
-Gimping of AllShare etc to prevent non-stock ROMs from using media hubs etc. No reason for it. I don't have a hub or use one...but I hate gimping by design.
-Sammy Appstore is all but pointless as of now...there's nothing on it worth it eating space on my device.
-Sprint Connection Optimizer is also crap IMHO.
In the grand scheme of things these are somewhat minor complaints.
Well, lets see?, .....no, no grievances.
For those having issues with the Hardware ID error, I did thread on a partial solution: Linky. Unfortunately, it doesn't give access for ADB, but good enough to access the microSD for file transfers
I haven't had any OS crashes or random reboots. I think I had one boot loop. I did have an issue with the 4-1 power menu with a reboot, but it was a known issue
Overall, the stock firmware is very stable and solid.
I don't have any complaints. Although, S-pen applications are quite limited. Not surprising since this is only the second device with it. Throw in that styluses aren't exactly common in use on the Android platform, or mobile in general. I assume more will come later.
Battery life is good considering the screen size. The only time I'm burning through battery is when I use an MHL adapter, which is a lot at work.
The nice thing, since this phone is on all the major carriers, plus an international version, we'll probably see quite a bit from the developer community.
So I don't get my note 2 until January, but regarding the inability to see files when connected with USB... had anybody tried the app Software Data Cable?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lyy.softdatacable
I haven't had to connect either my phone (OG Evo) or my wife's (galaxy s2) in months.
Grievances? Yes, R.I.P. Apple.
Hello everyone!
So every month when Google releases their security updates, I usually flash-all with the "-w" intact. I just like to get a fresh start once a month and don't mind setting a few things up again.
One strange thing I noticed is USB file transfer doesn't work as intended once I flash-all and get back into the OS.
When I connect my Pixel 2 XL to my iMac, the connection is constantly disconnecting and reconnecting every second.
I use an app called "Handshaker" for file transfers, and my device in this app shows up and disappears every second. Transfer speeds are also about half the speed they normally are as well.
Thinking it could be the third-party app Handshaker itself, I went into Terminal and typed "adb devices" to see if my device shows up. One second it will, another it won't. "adb push" will also fail halfway. My USB debugging notification also appears and disappears every second or so as well, so that tells me it isn't the Handshaker file transfer app.
Sometimes it will stay connected for a couple of minutes and then will disconnect. This is extremely frustrating as I'm basically praying files transfer before the device disconnects lol.
I am aware USB cables and the Pixel 2 XL don't get along very well, and I have tried a couple different ones with no luck.
The strange part is, after a day or so, (maybe once the OS "settles in"?) File transfer is back to being rock solid, and transfer speeds go back to being blazing fast again.
Apart from trying different cables, I've tried this on a couple different monthly updates (as the issue has been ongoing for some time now). I've also tried custom kernels and ROMs to see if that helps, with no luck.
The only "fix" is just to wait a day or two and try again (which always works). It's only when I try transferring files immediately after flashing-all.
Simply waiting, although, is technically a fix, it's still very strange and doesn't seem normal. I'd like to hear from anyone else who's experienced this and can explain what's going on.
Sorry for the lengthy explanation but I like to be thorough so it helps you guys help me better
Thanks in advance!
Bump
Many people are reporting various USB issues everywhere with the Pixel 2 XL. Mine isn't even recognized by Windows anymore, and ADB now doesn't work at all...
One day it works, the next day it doesn't anymore
On mine ADB works fine but when I switch the usb settings over to file transfer my laptop doesn't recognize the phone. Drivers are installed properly, tried many usb cables, usb ports, but file transfer doesn't work. Thank God I have good internet connection, so I have a full backup of the whole device on my Google drive. ?? However I didn't need to reflash the phone just yet. I'm still new in the game with this phone. ? No mistakes have been made... Well, not yet... ?
Interesting, seems like (from what I know) I'm the only person who has USB issues right after flashing factory images and no issues otherwise.
That's the part that has me scratching my head the most, because I don't make any changes, I just wait it out and everything starts working perfectly fine again :/
