Current rumor says, as opposed to the last 1 or 2 rumors that turned out incorrect and the next X when this one falls through too.
Seriously announcing a mobile platform at a Web 2.0 summit? doesn't seem to fit.

Why in the world would they release Android 2.3 on a Web 2.0 summit?
What do you guys think? will there be a new UI? Hopefully it looks like the Kite UI Although i have been searching around i have not found anything on the actual gingerbread release, yet
I think gingerbread is 3.0 not 2.3
Any word about the integration in Gingerbread of that fancy virtual keyboard Google bought a few weeks ago?

Gingerbread is likely just to be an iteration of the OS, Honeycomb or (3.0) is likely to be the reworked candidate... What they have probably done is set the base ready for UI rework which will be completed by the next release.. That's my thought anyway. So yea, expect changes, but only tweaks, just like we got in 2.2.
Either way, it'll be well worth the upgrade!

isn't there anyone on the forum, who's like an inside man and have all the inside info.. J/k keeping my fingers crossed.
The only way we'll see Gingerbread announced is if they're bundling integrated web services in a big way which would make sense what with facebook making some big pushes with single sign in and now their mail services.
But I doubt it, it's on the ticket as a "conversation" with Eric Schmidt, someone will probably ask him a question on it and that'll be about it.
But then again, he could also have a full plate of gingerbread cookies for the whole summit!!!
We had a feeling Eric Schmidt would be doing something surprising at the Web 2.0 summit, and the man didn't disappoint -- he just showed off the Nexus S, and revealed it has NFC features, a technology he thinks will eventually replace credit cards. Unfortunately, he also called it an "unannounced phone" from an "announced manufacturer," and the logo was taped over, so we're not any closer to a release date here.

I do not think it will be 3.0 but 2.3. And it is out on some development devices. Saw a graph showing the web statistics regarding Android and it showed all the versions including 2.2, 2.3 and 3.0, means that 3.0 is in an early development process. I cannot remember where i saw it.. sorry. [Update] I added the image I was talking about, it is from areamobile.de/news/16924-android-gingerbread-und-honeycomb-bereits-im-testbetrieb.
Another thing is that Alvaro Fuentes, member of the Open Handset Alliance, wrote in his twitter post:

Being frustrated after waiting for a week. Love to see the new features.
Well we will keep on waiting. Although there is a wait time till HTC releases an OTA.
heh, guess he did announce it there. Sort of anyway.

TouchXperience project progress
Written by Julien Schapman

To make you patient until the public release, I decided to give you regular news about TouchXperience project progress and to give you more details about some TouchXperience features. Don't hesitate to make suggestions in the dedicated forum.
The first public release will be (finally!) available in October (2008!), TouchXperience will be available for HTC TyTN, TyTN II, Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, and later Touch HD. Other devices may be supported in the future and non-HTC touch devices (such as Samsung Omnia/i900) are not excluded, but be aware that I need to invest in new devices to work on it, and developping for non-HTC devices may take longer because I use to develop on HTC hardware only.
Site has exceeded bandwidth... he didn't sneak a release out last night did he?
Lol it's might just be the case. Site has never been down since he took it online. I've been checking the release status frequently.

Following some site's the rom is now downloadable. But the site won't work because of the traffic. Also it's possible that some other company has bought the product from him... You never know.
So maybe it won't be downloadable at all. But ofcourse he won't sell it, will he?
Can't wait untill there is some download link available.
Ok taking this back, just read that he won't sell it. Since he said it himself. Hope there will soon be a new mirror. I really respect this

That last link is for a new item posted on 1st August
I'm sure if it was released he would have popped in to say so. Looks like something caused a traffic surge though, maybe he got slashdotted lol.
Hmm....
Yeah, that is pretty interesting... I guess we'll have to follow up over the weekend to see what the truth is!
Try clicking on the link in the Dutch forum, it sends you to the "Site has exceeded bandwidth" screen. Schaps may have released it but has been too busy to post it here. Could also just be a demo or test app...
Will keep trying and update later..
Unfortunately the recent release of the Android 1.0 source code (http://source.android.com/download) and the HTC ROMS that will surely follow may make this project moot.
Kaiser ROM Development
Hermes Android ROM Discussion
Especially considering that Windows Mobile 7 may not be out until 2010.
But so goes the software industry...
Not really as the developement of Android for the Hermes isn't exactly powering along and the general consensus is that it may not be possible to port Android to the Hermes. Something to do with the fact Hermes is a ARM4 processor and Android was made to work on ARM5.
Cheers...

You're right jstegeman... Even by myself trusting and hoping these. But I had hope in Google as well and not having any fix release date look to me unprofessionnal... the term "shortly" used by them can mean days, weeks, months... Is it so difficult to say the release date will be the xx of xx year xx and keep that date?
Sorry but this might come from my Swiss habits, having the clock's at the right time, no improvisation, organization... I hate "not knowing" and am quite impatient lol

Do you really think that Google lets HTC wait for release like the rest of us? They have been working on 2.2 from early stages too, they must if they want to release timely 2.2 devices.
Secondly, they would never ever release a froyo build before google.

Sorry Swissman,
but a new release of a OS is NOT a FIX as you defined it.
There have been fixes available on the air, and - afaik - no other os-manufacturer does release on-the-air fixes like Google does.
Moreover, you bought a mobile phone with a working os, and - always afaik - you cannot blame Google in being supposedly in delay for a new release of an OS.
What should you think then about Microsoft for Windows 7 or Apple for OS 4????? Not to talk about Meego or else.....
Please have a cup of tea and try and have a different opiniono about "unprofessionality"....

Is there a stable Froyo with Sense out there, one based on the Evo's ROM cause I did flash a rom by avalaunch. But it was based on the desire. I didn't like that and it didn't seem as fluid. So my question is... Is there a Froyo with Sense ROM out there thats stable and based on the Evo? and if there is what features are not working (if any) thank you
So far, all the FroYo roms are missing ( at the very least ) the back camera & 4G. However DamageControl & Cyanogen should have working ROM's within the next few days. Cyanogen will be AOSP, but i think DC might be Sense UI.
I initially thought I'd want an AOSP rom but after trying them I much prefer Sense, mainly for the widgets. Lets hope DC has sense! Wouldnt that be a slap in the face to HTC devs who need until December to complete it.. and DC does it with 2 devs in their spare time?

From what I understand Google will not let anyone release 2.2 until N1 has it for a while. HTC has no control over it. It is google's way of keeping the N1 atop of the phone ladder. The same will happen with the next version. Its google's game, we have to play by their rules.

Well, not entirely. When Google is finished testing on their "standard" hardware (in this case, the Nexus One) they will designate a final version. Then, HTC needs to get hold of this final version and add support for any unique hardware or software that their devices have. Think of it like release candidates and RTM versions of Windows. PC manufacturers get hold of the release candidates and test versions so that they can develop drivers and make sure their devices all work with the new OS. Then they get the final version, tweak what needs to be tweaked, run it through bug testing, and then pass it along.
In this case, HTC has to get the final version, make sure all of their apps and drivers work, make sure it works on their phones, and then pass it to Sprint for *more* testing to make sure it plays nice with the network and performs well.

Woo! More unsubstantiated rumors.
With each failed attempt at guessing a release date, our chances of being correct on the next guess improve, right guys? Guys?
So EA17 means that it was completed on the 17th of January. So either they are clueless how to release this OTA without bricking devices or they are really testing the **** out of this one then. I hope its the latter case.
I feel like Charlie Brown going to kick the football. Surely Lucy won't pull it away again this time...
I think this one will actually be the one, theres already proof with that picture. Now Now, I know that it can be edited, but still, it seems like this date will be the one we were actually waiting for.
I just don't get it.
EA17... so it's already done.
It's not out because it's being tested.
So why is there a release date?
- If they know it's fine, it should be out already.
- If they expect it to fail, then how do they know it will be ready by a certain date?
If I had my way a lot would be different... but I don't understand how/why the final release will not be a build dated maybe a week before the actual release date, a date we will not know until it happens.

It makes perfect sense. They are going to test whatever they release for a while to make sure its polished. The rumor that AC received was probably that IF they dont find any major bugs in this version, it will be released on the 21st.
If they are so sure it's fine, they should release it now...
And if they DO find an issue, they'll disappoint everyone AGAIN.
This is nothing more than predicting the future, and they've been doing it poorly for 6mos now, why does Sprint think they'll get it right this time?
Releasing it at such-and-such date assuming all's well is what they have been doing since August.

It's individuals that work for Sprint who want to give us an idea of when we might expect it (then they find some bugs)... or just douchebags that want to throw out rumors for laughs. Again, Sprint doesn't say when they are releasing updates because that makes them look worse if it's buggy or they don't follow through.

I am running 2.2, it has some issues, but works remarkably well. No FC's, and only slight screen rotation lag. So I can wait for Froyo... I am willing to wait because I want them to fix any and all bugs... Whether that be GPS, keyboard misses, screen rotation, whatever..
I am not a Sprint Lacky, have no stock in the company, but how people can get so emotionally attached to a software upgrade is beyond me. I can only imagine what people will be saying if they released a rushed buggy version.
Those of us that flashed the FroYo DK28 will still get this OTA if/when it comes out, right?
Still getting used to this phone. The Nexus One I used to have was a lot different.
I'd be happy with a new leak that's better than DK28 instead of "release dates" for froyo.

I feel like Charlie Brown going to kick the football. Surely Lucy won't pull it away again this time...

Not exactly. You will have to flash stock DI18 for the OTA to come through and install. But I recommend waiting for our dev teams to get hold of it first to tweak it.
