Kernel question. - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've stopped paying complete attention to the forum so whats the word on kernels? I'm running the new virtuous stock kernel. Has the source for this come out yet? Are ziggys kernels better then this? I get confused by the kernel number since some have newer looking number but are in fact older like kxk

[Q] Kernel help, Sense def. needed

Heres some pretty basic questions for yall:
1)
I need a AOSP kernel. No "Trickling battery" please, I don't want my battery exploding next to my head while I sleep. Needs to be stable. Needs to have HAVS. Needs to be able to run Cyangenmod7. Lastly, it needs to be CMF, or non-brain ****ing whatever.
2)
I need to know what custom ROM i should download. I'm undecided with the whole sense vs. non-sense thing. Partially because I don't know what sense is. (im assuming its some sort of UI?). Something with a different look than stock 2.2 at least. Needs to be stable. Should be Froyo-derived. Needs to be activly upgraded, but not nightly or in beta (with the exception of Cyangenmod7)
In essence, which is the best coustom rom in your opinion?
3)What is Sense? Is it what allows you to drag-n-drop icons?
4) I need a non-AOSP kernel incase the most popular ROM doesn't have support for AOSP.
Thanks.
And I did do a bit of searching in the developers section, but all I found were beta or alpha releases with trickling charges enabled.
I decided on Savaged-Zen Kernel 2.6.37-ck1 kernel and a CM7 nightly build. full-18.. I hope this works >.< All my other attemps have been faulty.

[Q] Froyo or Gingerbread

I want to start of by apologizing if this is a question that is answered somewhere else. I DID search and checked all of the 'similar threads' before posting.
I am wondering what the difference is between a froyo kernel and a gingerbread kernel. I don't really need super specific technical details, just the semi-technical general answer.
The reason I ask is because I am running the Incredibly Re-engineered (v2.3.2) with the incredikernel v2.6.32.27 and noticed that the incredikernel thread got updated.
Incredikernel Thread
In the update, there is listed a froyo and a gingerbread specific kernel. Do you have to chose a specific one for a specific rom? If so, how do you know which one to chose.
My About Phone screen shows "Android Version 2.2" so I assume that means I need the froyo kernel?
Edit: I also noticed that I didn't finish the thread title. I meant to put Froyo or Gingerbread Kernel... Can this be changed after posting? I'm not the best with forums.
You are exactly correct, you would use the Froyo kernel. Froyo is 2.2, Gingerbread is 2.3, and you need to use a kernel for whichever version of Android you are running.
Perfect. Thank you very much.
the gingerbread kernels are for gingerbread based roms like CM7 you want the froyo one if you are still running android OS 2.2 ( look in the "about phone" tab in settings to confirm. also keep in mind that there are differant froyo kernels as well there is sense based kerners and AOSP kernels.
So the sense based kernels are based off of the HTC kernel? and AOSP is the completely open source project done by the community? How do you find out which type of rom you are running, other than looking on the forum/web page? Is there a spot in your phone settings that will list this? I've never seen one that I can remember.
Well, it's a matter of what flavor of Android the kernel is made for that determines if it's a Sense kernel or an AOSP one. As far as determining the ROM type, I am not aware of anything that specifically gives it away other than the general feeling of Sense verses the general feeling of AOSP; with Sense you have all the HTC widgets and apps, unless it's a Sense-less ROM.
TL;DR, your best bet is to just note what kind of ROM it is when you download.
Ok. Thanks for all of the help.
Hopefully any other newbies out there who have the same questions might get some use from this too.
You are certainly welcome.

[Q] Gingerbread OC

Hi all. I have been looking around at the various ROMs and Have found with my DHD (out of lack of experience maybe with modding) that I can't get an overclock on Android 2.3.X ROMs. Any reason for this? I've tried a few kernels as well and some aren't compatible with the ROM so I'm not sure what to use if any.
Any knowledge out there?
The source code for gingerbread w/ sense kernels aren't released yet so there are no custom kernels thus no overclocking. The kernels used are stock ones.
Ah thanks. I wasn't sure if there was any support out there yet. I have been flashing a few roms, radios and kernels to see if anything fitted. Also why doesn't the new sense version agree with these custom ginger roms?

[Q] Nil's gingersense overclocking Q

Just tried Nil's Business gingersense rom. I like it. Doesn't seem to be as sanppy as CM 7 but maybe it will show the 3G bars correctly. I don't have enough posts to pose this question in the Nil's thread so I'll post it here. Can you overclock with this ROM? I know you can't use setcpu. If so, what is a recommended ROM?
No you cannot overclock, as it's the stock kernel. I don't understand the last part of the question, If so what is a recommended ROM...? Do you mean kernel? I know there were a couple of people in that thread the said Hydra's and someone else's kernel worked for Nils' ROM, but I haven't seen a post updating how stable/unstable it is.
Sorry, I meant kernel. I switched away from Nils' as it was missing a few features I wanted. I had CM 7 for a while but now I am back to Virtuous.
Once the GingerSense kernel source code is released, it's game on for custom kernels.

[Q] Which Kernels are really safe to use with JB leaks?

I have seen to many kernel threads and none of them seems to say that the kernels are safe to use with the JB leaks.
I really don't see why they shouldn't, but I really wanted to be sure.
have anyone used a Franco, faux or similiar present kernel with the new JB leaks from Insert Coin or ARHD?
Do we have to repack them to be fine?
I know that kernel version should not be a problem, but we only have source code for the ICS kernel based in 2.6.X and the new kernel is 3.0.X
So I wanna know real experiences if possible
Thanks,
Santroph.
Hi, i have tried repacking a few of them as im keeping a list up together for the maximus thread but none of the linux 2 kernels have worked yet, will try trips kernel when i get round to it this week but it says no support for sense so probably a no go. I havent seen anything new yet but will keep my post updated as and when (link in my sig) they should work for other jb sense 4+ roms too :good:
