[Q] How to change ROMs - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

have found several pages with info but none for the HTC slide. So I don't know if it is recommended to follow any of those.
I installed the CM 6 on my slide and I don't really like it. I found another ROM that I would like to try but have NO CLUE how to do it.
Can someone point me in the right direction; either via a website or a step by step guide here?
Thanks a million

download ROM to your computer and put it on your SD card without unzipping it. go to market and download ROM Manager > open app > select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and tap myTouch Slide > select "Reboot into Recovery". phone will power down and boot itself in to recovery. select wipe data/factory reset > under "advanced" select "wipe Dalvik Cache" > go back to main menu > select "install zip from sdcard" > select "choose zip from sdcard" > scroll through list till you find your ROM and select it > after it is done installing go back to main menu and select "reboot system now" > enjoy new ROM
edit 1 : when in recovery use volume button to scroll up and down, trackpad is enter and back arrow is back.
edit 2 : you can also flash Overclock Kernels the same way... just skip ALL of the wipes

You are one in a million!!
Doing this now ... will report once done
Edit - what do you mean by Overclock kernels?

CM 6 does not have market ....=/ how do I get the app now?!?!

Here is link to post to get latest Gapps (for market) you will have to get into recovery the way you did to flash CM6)
As far overclock click link in my sig for more info
edit : the GApps link will auto download when you click it

A couple notes on switching between ROMs:
1: when going from one ROM to another, very few allow you to simply install on top of an existing ROM, thus requiring you to wipe the phone from recovery
2: When you do a wipe, you will also need to remember to install the Google Applications ("gapps"). Link for gapps is in the post above me.

Thank you fermunky and raven!! =D I'll look into that in a second.
OK so I booted into recovery and selected "wipe data/factory reset " but the screen has been black for about 5 min now =/ is that normal?
Edit - I went the "brave path" and simply lightly pushed the power button and the screen came up. OK, so I am continuing the process =)
Edit 2 - does the update.zip need to be applied at all?

ROM manager recovery
I have gotten through to trying to reboot in recovery mode through the rom manager. However, when I press the choice to reboot in recovery through the program, nothing happens. Any suggestions?

nope don't need update.zip if you have ROM Manager. what did you press when selecting? power or the track pad? just asking because the track pad is enter/select, power turns off screen.

Good to know I didn't need to do the update.zip =)
I think I might have have used the power as I had done so through the root process but when I touched the power key again the screen came back up instantly and used the track pad from there on.
Raven I OWE you big time!!!!! You have been EXTREMELY helpful. The instructions you gave me were to a T and easy to follow. I found that the Rom Manager was already loaded on the CM 6.
I think this is a great easy to follow post for other noobs and or anyone wanting to change roms with no previous experience!
I just broke down your initial post line by line as it was easier to my eyes/brain lol
1. download ROM to your computer and put it on your SD card without unzipping it.
2. go to market and download ROM Manager
3. open app
4. select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and tap myTouch Slide
5. select "Reboot into Recovery".
Phone will power down and boot itself in to recovery.
(when in recovery use volume button to scroll up and down, trackpad is enter and back arrow is back.)
6. select wipe data/factory reset
7. under "advanced" select "wipe Dalvik Cache"
8. go back to main menu
9. select "install zip from sdcard"
10. select "choose zip from sdcard"
11. scroll through list till you find your ROM and select it

I'll ask the same thing Raven asked me; did you use the track pad to do the selection or did you use the power key?
If you used the power then I think that could be it. Try the track pad as it is what worked for me

The only ROMs that will work are the ones in the "Development" section for the myTouch Slide, ROMs for any other phone will crash your phone.

Poop. I didn't think so... thanks.

I've been meaning to make this for a while, so here goes:
If you do have a ROM installed now that's working:
If you can, connect to a high-speed connection via WiFi, or make sure you have a good 3G signal.
If it's not included in your ROM, install ROM Manager
Open ROM Manager, and give it su access when asked.
Tap on "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Tap on "HTC Evo (CDMA)" when you get the pop-up to confirm the model
Wait for the success message, and tap OK.
Tap on "Download ROM"
Scroll down to the bottom, and tap on "EVO Stock and Radios"
Tap on "Stock 3.70.651.1 Deodexed"
Tap on "Download"
Wait for the download to complete. It's 200MB, so it'll take a while (thus why I told you to get on WiFi earlier).
Tap on "Backup Existing ROM"
Tap on "Wipe Data and Cache"
Tap "OK"
Tap "OK"
Wait for ClockworkMod to Nandroid backup your current ROM, wipe your data and cache, and then flash the new ROM.
Wait for the new stock ROM to boot.
Enjoy!
If you don't have a working ROM, and your currently installed Recovery is Amon_RA (yellow text on black background with HTC logo):
Turn off phone.
Power on phone by holding Volume Down and Power.
Use the volume buttons to highlight RECOVERY, then Power to select it.
When in Recovery, enable USB-MS.
Download 3.70.651.1-rooted-deodexed-signed-teshxx.zip from goo-inside.me/supersonic/stock
Copy the ZIP file to your SD card.
Disable USB-MS
Go to the Wipe menu
Select "Wipe ALL userdata/factory reset"
Select "Wipe SYSTEM:"
Select "Wipe SDCARD:.android_secure"
Go to "Flash zip from sdcard"
Choose the 3.70.651.1-rooted-deodexed-signed-teshxx.zip file. Confirm.
Reboot once the flashing is complete.
If you don't have a working ROM, and your currently installed Recovery is ClockworkMod (orange or blue text on black background with ClockworkMod logo):
Turn off phone.
Power on phone by holding Volume Down and Power.
Use the volume buttons to highlight RECOVERY, then Power to select it.
When in Recovery, go to the Mounts and Storage menu, then select "mount USB storage".
Download 3.70.651.1-rooted-deodexed-signed-teshxx.zip from goo-inside.me/supersonic/stock
Copy the ZIP file to your SD card.
Delete the .android_secure folder on your SD card if it's there.
Unmount USB storage
Select "format system"
Select "format data"
Select "format cache"
Go to "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Choose the 3.70.651.1-rooted-deodexed-signed-teshxx.zip file. Confirm.

[1.3] Installing Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0
(Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0 zip and Gapps zip files required)
You will need to download Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0 and Gapps. Put these on your MicroSD card. Now you need to boot into 2nd init recovery. Do this by turning on your phone and pressing the Volume down button when you see the blue status LED light.
Once inside, use the volume up and down buttons to navigate, and the power button to select. Firstly, you can backup here by going to "Backup and restore" and selecting "Backup (all)". Then "go back" to the main menu and select "Wipe data/factory reset". Once this is successful, select "Wipe cache partition". Now you select "Install zip from sdcard" and install Cyanogen first by selecting the file. After this, install Gapps.
Your phone should now start with a red Motorola icon with a wasp stating cyanogen defy 7.1-11 with the LEDs flashing blue and then green before displaying a blue cyanogen mod logo with the swirling animation. This will then lead into setup, meaning your install was successful!
[Note: CM 7.1.0 comes with the latest version of 2nd init recovery]
[1.4] Soft unlocking your Defy
(bp_ptc file and Root Browser Lite required)
Firstly, you will want to backup your system again. To do this, turn off your phone and when it's on the first Motorola logo, press Volume down when the blue LED light flashes. Then select "Backup and restore" and select "Backup (all)".
Then boot back normally and download the bp_unlock file and extract the file and copy the file "bp_ptc" to your MicroSD card and ignore all the other folders and files. Now search for Root Browser Lite in the Market and open it and enable the root features when it asks by pressing "Yes" and allow SuperUser access. Press the Home button on the top left and select "SD card" and look for bp_ptc and highlight it by holding your finger on it and selecting "Copy". Now press on the Home button again at the top and select "Home" and scroll down to system > bin and press "Paste". Now go back to the previous parent folder by pressing the green arrow and select bootmenu > 2nd-init.
Here, look for the file init.mapphone_umts.rc and long press on it and select "Open in text editor" Scroll down until you get to "service usbd /system/bin/usbd" (about 10 medium flicks) and just after it, enter "service bp-ptc /system/bin/bp.ptc user root group root user root" on a line underneath it. Now press the "Save" button.
Bro i Reboot phone and in boot i Choose to install from SDcard with Gapps.zip AND when i see only logo in device, can you see in youtube video.
I hope to have understood
Download one of the latest CM7 nightlys, put out on your sd, go to custom recovery (vol down on let...). There, wipe data/cache and flash the zip. Reboot (if you get stuck for more than 10 min on the turning boot logo, press both volume buttons + power = hot reboot). If you can't boot the second time, just tell. Normally you don't have to do anything to softunlock in CM7.

I followed the inscrutions to soft unlock my defy, but there are a couple of typos in the post on hotukdeals (. instead of _ in the file name):
you need to edit the file to look like this:
service usbd /system/bin/usbd
user root
service bp-ptc /system/bin/bp_ptc
user root
group root
service nvm-daemon /system/bin/nvm_daemon
user root
group radio
Thanks
thank you very much my problem is solved
but I have a question
how tu unlock all networks
Thanks labsin
Have you installed a recent nightly? I thought you didn't have to do anything else. I could be wrong (don't have a locket one).
