Hello all... Recently my girlfriend and I had purchased the Epic Touch 4g for her. She absolutely loves the phone but the signal strength isn't the best. I have had a Droid 1 for 2 years now and have flashed roms/kernels on a weekly basis for the past year and a half. Can anyone recommend a good starter Rom/Kernel? Is flashing a rom/kernel for the Epic Touch just as easy as flashing for the Droid? I've done some research and I am a bit overwelmed. It seems like clockworkmod recovery is being ran on the Epic Touch but the process for flashing is different? (maybe not, but like I said, I'm a tad overwelmed ).. Also, are there any tweaks after root that would improve signal strength? If anyone can help me out to get us started I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
-Mike
I recommend starburst rom v1.6.. it comes with LostKernel which is a good kernel to use.. for root though, there are dif. methods, i originally rooted mine with Zedomax Kernel through Odin.. fairly easy .. so get it rooted, and i'd go with starburst v1.6 which when flashing it through CWM once you have root, also flashes the lostkernel
I recommend Starburst. Runs sooo smooth and its the only ROM that I see being actively updated. Viper just got into the game so if you don't like touchwiz, you can flash his ROM too which uses another launcher but i would say equally great. Comes down to preference and what works best.
And to get root and clockwork, I followed bubbys
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287776
It seems to get root you have to use odin, but once thats done you can use clockwork to flash ROMs. If you get issues Odin is there for support.
Thanks! Too bad my girlfriend starts work in an hour
Take a look at this thread Id really recommend to check the links I have linked to save you some pain....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309078
So wait... after reading that thread it says that the bootloader keeps a record of everytime you flash with Odin? So if something happens to her phone and we need to take it in, they will know we rooted it?
A good reason to use starbursts rom is because its just way smoother some how and he stream lined the rom and did a bunch of tweaks that make noticably fast/smoother. That's the reason most are using it

Yes, but you can reset the counter some how. Just do a search for reset counter and you should find the thread

Cool, thanks, I got worried for a little bit there... I mean, we got it rooted and everything just fine, but I failed to mention to my girlfriend that there might be a slight problem if we tried to take the phone in ... I figured that problem would get solved eventually but it's good to know I'm in the clear
yeah I wouldn't worry about it, chances are if you flash everything stock theres still a counter chances are they wont notice or pay it much attention. its possible but, I've had friends take their evo in with security off and everything else flashed stock and it was ok.
Bring her to me I will root her. Don't bring your cable I will use mine to plug in her smoothly in order to root through odin.

You can use a jig, it will get rid of the yellow triangle on bootscreen and bring the counter down to zero.
The jig costs $7 MAX, all you do is plug it into microusb while phone is on, and the phone reboots automatically, and everything is back to normal. Process takes about 30 seconds max, and you can use the jig multiple times, with how many ever samsung phones, it is NOT a one time use deal.

Every night before I go to bed I turn off my phone and put it into the charger. But since i'm using custom roms the phone turns itself on while it's charging.
It is somehow a rare issue since i've only managed to find one person with same problem. Not a real big of deal, but I wanted to find out how come. The phone only got a custom rom (ARHD) and CWM recovery everything else is stock.
Could this be CWM related? And what are possible options to fix this?
sounds like you have the exact same issue as I had/have

Allright!
Can you give more information about your phone?
Like what ROM and kernel you on, which CWM. Did you always had this problem or after a period of time?
Atleast then we can compare what we have the same.
Ill post mine in about 6 hours (need to go to work right now).
Ok my ROM and phone details are as follows:
ROM-> ARHD 6.0
Recovery -> CWM 5.8.3.1
Kernal -> 2.6.39.4 (Stock)
Build -> 1.29.401.11
Basband -> 1.1204.105.14
Thanks! I also got the same configuration as you do. Tomorrow I will do some tests like flashing other ROM and recovery, will let you know if I find anything useful.

Solved!
I finally managed to fix this rare problem. The problem is inside the ClockWorkRecovery. 3 days ago I flashed the TeamWin Recovery and since then the phone won't boot when it's off.

Thank you very much for letting us know! I had been keeping an eye on the CWM thread but had not seen many people mention this. Perhaps most people charge while there phones are on but I shall now give this a try.
Hopefully the problem gets sorted as I do really like CWM recovery!
I had the same problem. Hmm. I updated clockwork today. I'll ser if it still turns on.

And what about the updated CWM Recovery, does this one still boot on charge?
I had my htc one replaced under warranty for battery issues and purple camera issue.
My new one is running latest nusense rom but i had the same issue on stock debloated/deodexed rom.
Sometimes the screen just won't turn on. It appears that issue is only present when charging. Last time it happened i was tethering and internet connection was fine even though the phone was unresponsive.
The only solution is reset by holding the power button.
Any ideas?

Is the USB OEM, ive had cheap cables from china do this to me in the past.
I've tried both the original and a knock off cable but there is no difference. Today I realized that it happens even when the phone is not charging. So I guess I can rule out bad charging and cables.
I will try to keep it in the daydream mode today just to see if that makes any difference. I'm not having much hope though, I'll probably have to get another replacement.

sorry to hear that, are you getting replacement from VZW or HTC?
Verizon. I replaced my original phone through them, it was easy and free. It sucks that i will have to pay for the sunshine root again.
I might try flashing new firmware first just to see if that makes any difference but i'm afraid it's hardware issue

I remember there was an issue like this with other older HTC models, like the Rezound... Try, if you can, upping the min frequency up one notch. Synisterwolf remembers this old issue.
That can be a temp fix until you get your replacement.

i would take your Paypal statement and pm jcase and tell him whats going on. maybe he can work something out with you.
Ive had my share of lemons from VZW. i hope you have better luck with the next one.
So far daydream mode seems to be preventing screen from freezing. i will try upping the frequency.
is it possible that this is software issue if it works?
thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated!
Also does anyone know what stock default frequency is? I'm pretty sure that i selected default upon installation but i'm wondering if i might have accidentally underclocked. My default was 384, i upped it to 486.
I'm just hoping that this is just a kernel issue i guess lol
Even though i had it happen on stock deodexed rom too. I'm not sure about full stock because i rooted and flashed immediatelly lol

When it does it freezing thing and you reboot into android pull a last kernel message like this ...
Code:
adb pull /proc/last_kmsg
Upload it as a .txt file to xda so we can take a look...
Thx Josh
Looks like frequency change did the trick. It's been working fine since i change it.
When I get a chance, I'll try to set it back to 384 and pull the kernel message. Thanks Josh.

is there any way i can pull last_kmsg without adb and save it on my phone, download it later? this damn thing just won't freeze now when I'm home and I won't have access to my computer with adb later so I wonder if I could just pull it through root explorer. I located the file but can't figure out how to open it from my phone.

Last_kmsg is the kernel log from last boot. Just go into any file explorer that has root permissions and go to /proc folder. Copy the last_kmsg file to your SD card

I kinda hope you're right because the phone works great when I upped the minimum frequency and I don't feel like dealing with another warranty replacement, returning this one to stock and rooting my new phone.
What worries me is that it first happened on santods stock deodexed rom with stock kernel, now it's happening with santods nusense six with kernel that came with that rom.
I'm thinking about returning it to full stock but I really need tethering to work. maybe I'll just try stock rooted with wifi tether.
thanks for all your help guys!

Welcome dear
So i tried new lunar kernel on default settings, it froze again 10 minutes after i left home. Once again i couldn't pull last_kmsg. At this point i'm pretty sure it's a hardware defect. I guess another trip to Verizon store is in order
Yesterday i returned the phone to stock, leaving it rooted and s-off. No freezing at all so far. So i guess it's not a hardware issue. I'll try installing older version of TWRP recovery and try to do fresh flash of nusense.
flashed back nusense with an older recovery with all stock settings last night, this morning the phone wouldn't wake up.
finally managed to pull last_kmsg. (i had to upload it as zip file, it wouldn't allow me to upload the file with no extension)

Hello,
i have the same issue as described in the thread below and shown in this video ==> https://vid.me/NGc5
== > http://www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=41205&extra=page=1&page=1
i have been suffering from same issue since the .90 update, i tried flashing the 1.1GB file using adb which didn't solve the issue along with the yesterday update
anyone having the same problem?
i want to flash the older .63 version, but using adb it says that it can't flash older version than the current version , anyone can help with that ?
@Asus_USA
any info please
I downgraded the rom to a version from July, yet the same issue persist
Seems like a member mentioned somewhere else that the. 90 update might have broken some hardware using code that is not reversible
Waiting for any feedback from Asus

@ASUS_Khang
can you please confirm that this is a software issue that will be solved through an update and not a hardware failure ?

I am also having this SAME issue ! I have unlocked my bootloader, root access, and flashed the 2.40.97 update again, I tried downgrading, it won't let me install and lower update over an higher one. and I can't get twrp recrovery to stay after the flash, it always goes back to the stock recovery. Also I know whats causing the problem. it's the Auss / powered by intel animated screen , First you have the Asus splash screen, Then the Animated Asus / Intel animation Then the boot animation screen. after unocking my bootloader, and changing the boot animation. I can tell you for sure, the Asus / Intel animation that is causing the issue !. I don't know where this animation is stored on the phone, if anyone knows. maybe we can restore of get rid of it. Anyway my phone is pretty much useless right now, can't use the keypad on the call screen, and can't even see the bottom half of the phone, IT's NOT a hardware problem. like some people have said. it's that dam Asus / Intel animation at starup.
I tried downgrading (using fastboot and abd) to every available firmware and nothing solved this problem
IMHO I think that the 90 upgrade triggered a bug while flashing boot partition

My phone (ZE551ML) developed the same issue. When flashing back to stock didn't work, I sent it in for an warranty RMA. A part was replaced and the phone sent immediately back. Not a word to me about the unlocked bootloader. Just make sure if you send it in, that you state you did flash attempt flashing to stock, and make sure the phone is as close to stock as you can get. Factory reset the phone and go.
I tried last week 3 times I got an RMA & then an advanced RMA and i'm getting the run around from them. they even had the hold of 344.00 on my checkings account to the advanced RMA and then THEY canceled the RMA and everytime I talked to them 3 different customer support people then said " sorry we're updating our systems call back tomorrow. " I got told that 3 times and I've called 4 times. the phone is pretty much useless at the moment.
If they send the phone back to you, the part that was replaced on mine is "90AZ00A1-M02610". Dunno if you can get that part yourself and have it repaired by a third party, but other than that I wouldn't know what to do in your situation.

...This is the Hardware model# of the whole device, not just a part inside , buy a new phone and you have this yourself !
At least for those in Canada, here a short review for my "advanced replacement" experience:
I used the Chat on their website to get a RMA#, then got a confirmation email with a sort of howto. They mentioned to use Fedex or UPS to send the defective device in and noted not to long to wait to do this otherwise the hold on my creditcard... you know! So i sent the package 3 days later with UPS, cost me a bit over CA$60 with insurance and tracking.
Just the other day i got email from Purolator (a Canada only parcel service) to print a return sticker. No one from ASUS mentioned this to me - $60 wasted
The replacement phone came also with Purolator, ASUS emailed me a tracking# but NOT wich carrier they used. Cost me a few hours and a couple phone calls to find out and re-route the package to my workplace.
ASUS did not use a original case, just a folded carton as they stated the replacement would be a new device. In case i decide to sell the phone i don't have original carton
Start to install all my usual App's etc. found that the phone does not receive any GPS signals, so it seems i changed a not usable screen into a not working GPS
For me, this was my last ASUS for a very long time!
Finally got my Advanced RMA going. can't wait to get a working phone, as soon as I do. Going root & unlock bootloader and install CM 12.1 I'm DONE with ASUS's bloatware ! ~ T

I think so, I tried to fix it, flash with 2.20.40.97 Four times now, the problem is still there, rooted, unlocked bootloader, and installed CM 12.1 thinking it would get rid of the problem, it didn't. I think the problem is in the boot partition now. I also flashed the splash screen, and the boot animation. the problem is still there, EVEN after returning this phone back to stock to RMA it. the problem is still there.

Phone: LG G3 D855 FW Update: V30C-EUR-XX
First things first... I know that there are other threads but
I haven't seen that somebody else is experiencing NO bootlooops WHILE charging.
A friend had a problem with this phone and asked for help so I said I'd try.
I turned it on and it randomly shutdowns now and then and the bootloops when not connected with the usb cable.
I read a lot of info about this problem and thought that it has been fixed in the time of two years but doesn't seem so. And I already have the latest update
What I already had done:
1) Uninstalled any apps and deleted all the files to make it empty as possible.
2) Flashed with stock FW using LG Flash Tools 2014 (x2 times)
What I want to ask/know if maybe:
1) There's a custom ROM which fixes this issue?!?
2) Maybe my battery's faulty and how can I test it?!?
3) Could Underclocking help and how to?!?
4) Should I give a try downgrading to KitKat/Lollipop?!?
4) Some other fixes I haven't seen?!?
Looking forward for your help. This forum is the best :good:
