Is there anything that will stream JustinTV like Skyfire used to do? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Skyfire has stopped working on Winmo, at least for me anyway. I am a huge basketball fan, and this is the time of year it came in handy. I would bookmark channelsurfing.net, and I could get my hoops fix very easily.

Creative 2nd Uses

I finally gave up the ghost on my 8525 a couple months back. Now, as it sits here collecting dust, I'm searching for creative solutions to a 2nd life for it. I've used it as a mini browser around the house, but that's getting stale.
Does anyone have suggestions before I turn it over to a donation?
Thoughts:
All-in-one remote: My Palm worked for years in this capacity.
BT keyboard for tivo or PS3?
Are there apps out there already?
TIA

If it has WiFi, can't you use it as a VoIP phone or run Skype on it? Otherwise you could probably experiment with the bluetooth (or the WiFi) to hook it up to some relays for home automation Depends on how skilled you are with programming, and -- I guess -- with the soldering iron
If you still feel like donating it tho I wouldn't mind getting a new toy ;D
Cheers,
Chris

haha.. i dont mind the donation too
Thanks for the offer guys, but I was meaning donation to charitable organizations where cell phones are in need.
Skype works excellent on the 8525. I used it for ages when my cellular was turned off. Just find a hotspot. (There are hotspot finding apps for the phone).
OR.
You could install a bunch of games on it and use it as a timekiller. I had lines etched into my screencover in the bejeweled layout. ALL of the popcap games are very well done on this phone. Bathroom break at work anyone??
Killer MP3 player and youtube watching machine. MP3 players are nice to have, and the Slide2Play thing is executed excellently. And for youtube, well, if you've been bored at a bar or restaurant with wifi, THIS is the thing to have with you! Don't like whats on TV? Fine i'll watch my own.
Lets see, what else has my phone done....
1. Use it as a digital camera with wifi.
2. Install the latest roms here and make people who buy NEW phones jealous.
3. Use it as a digital picture frame/clock on your desk running S2U2.
Theres a million uses. Just think about it.

Remote browsing? (and other stuffs and fluffs)

Hello ladies, gents, killer droids and aliens.
A somewhat long time lurker finally decided to register myself
Anyway, it seems quite likely that I'll pull trigger on one Desirable droid in a near future.
But I have to know couple of things before I dive in head first into the world of droids.
So if any of you could answer those questions, it would be... in the word of Borat, "Very nice" Here goes nothing!
1. Is it possible to browse files in my PCs on my LAN via WLAN from desire?
2. If so, is it possible to stream files (mp3s and avi most likely) from there to be played on desire?
3. Lastly, can desire handle WPA2-PSK?
Cheers!
In answer to your first two, yes (using EStrongs File Explorer, although I'm sure other apps will do it too) and a hesitant yes. Hesitant because I use the Subsonic media server to do just that but that might not be what you're after. Not sure if anything else can do it as I haven't tried. Subsonic is incredibly easy to set up though, and a one-time donation gives you Android streaming for life.
Not sure about the third as my home uses standard WPA for legacy reasons. I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't though.
Hey thanks for a quick answer!
Hm that subsonic seems like it's only meant for music and not for movies and such hmm...
Well the reason I asked about WPA2 is that my other handhelds such as DS and PSP aren't supporting it in the first place (which is a kind of bummer, but I will never lower security for play stuff online in any case)
Yes to number 3.. i use that encryption at home and the desire connects no problem...

Ah yes, sorry, Subsonic is just for music, but it does that music very well!
Can't help with video streaming, but it wouldn't surprise me to see something that does it. There's already the Youtube and Beebplayer apps so it can't be hard to do the same for LAN based videos.
Thanks micks & Noiz!
Well, you can come quite far with couple of gigs of music (besides I already have iPod nano) but TV series and such are bit bigger than mp3s you know? So I wasn't all that sure if I wanted to transfer everything to the phone.
BTW are there any competent program which can run divx without any hitch? or is the "convert the avi file to something else" the way to go?
ATM converting to mp4 with x264 is the way to go. unfortunately.
I recall reading something about somthing, like "Divx playback out of the box" and that kind of fluff regarding Desire before...
Was it pure 100% BS then? .... sigh ....

BS? No.
Available out of the box? No.
Coming "soon" to an OTA update near you? Yes.
"soon" IE.... next year?
I've seen the slow update on the Hero, so I won't be holdning my breath on this.
(The very reason I didn't go for Hero in the first place, painfully slow updates)

I really wish I could be more specific, but "soon" is as close as it gets.. Hence putting it in quotes.
For now, I'd convert using something like Handbrake. Not an ideal solution as you always lose some of the quality when cross converting, but it's the best solution for the moment.
Yeah I understand that, that's the reason I asked "next year?"
Well, I guess the quality itself won't bother me, after all, it's just on 3.7inch screen.
The main "trouble" as I see is that, it takes such tremendious time converting files.
I mean it takes more time to convert file than show itself you know?
The reason I stopped watching stuff on my PSP, it just took way too much time.
the one worry i'd have about streaming is data usuage... if your on 3g etc.. if you have wi fi handy then great.. but i'd imagine streaming over 3g would eat data quite quickly
Oh I was talking about while I'm on my own network.
So no worries there. Thank you for your concern tho.
But your post reminds of me something, but is kinda OT, should I start a new thread about that, or should I keep going here?
Since nobody's protesting, I'll just go ahead and ask it.
I feel a bit torned about how much data plan I'll be using.
I will be checking and sending around 10 mails avg a day, maybe some net surfing (nothing heavy duty) maybe couple of youtube vids, no twitter or facebook.
Will 500mb/month suffice or will I use it up within couple of days? LOL
I srsly have no idea, so any insight will be appreciated!
well i have 50 megs per day (dont ask irish plans are $hite) actually its a pay as you go contract.. 50 megs a day for 99 cents.. never go over that to be honest.. i have email client on and browse the web a bit.. and market place.. wouldnt watch video etc or do streaming unless i'm on wireless network... i think unless your doing streaming or sending large emails you'd do well to use 500 in a month.. i know guys who are on 250mb for a month and they say it doesnt them fine..

I think it really depends on your usage. I suggest a data monitoring app such as 3G Watchdog. Run it for a few days and it'll give you a good guage as to how much data you're using.
Well micks, when you think about it you have 50mb a day!
that's total sum of 1.4 gig per month!
So it's like 3 times more than I was thinking about after all.
Fatman, true, however, the provider here are sneaky bunch who allows custmers upgrade on plan, but not downgrade!
Choises choises, just way too many choises tbh.
I have to decide if I gonna go for Legend or Desire in the first place.
I mean Legend got some seriously sexy outershell! But desire shines with raw poweeeerrr.
I'm just asking myself why HTC didn't make legend shell with desire internals!

di.fm - streaming on wp7?

My brother has shown interest in wp7, but one thing that would keep him from getting one anytime soon would be this website. This is where he streams most of his electronic music from and his iPhone can stream it fine, but none of the browsers for wp7 can as far as I've been able to figure out.
Anybody use this site? There any way to get this working on wp7? Android & iPhone have di.fm apps, but they aren't going to be doing wp7 for a bit yet it looks like (BB one currently in public beta).
ask the makers of the app if they have any plans for windows phone.
Their site states they will be looking into it after the BB app is completed. I was wondering if there is any way to stream that site on wp7 as of now.
If not, he'll just have to wait and get a phone later, which I suggested anyway.
From their site:
Nokia, WebOS, Win7, etc.
"Will re-evaluate after Blackberry is completed."
Could take a year or more from that quote.
"Tunein Radio" my friend on the marketplace and search exactly [DI] and all the playlists come up, Get yo brother on it when he gets one or show him.
But yeah, No official app yet so i still have to use laptop for the 256k feeds atm , but hell... works perfectly out and about and sounds great off the phone
*but saying that just did a test again to see how much different they really sound, and the phone does seem to give it an ample boost in the right areas. meh, still works, but cross fingers for the real app*

Getting bored of android

Im posting this here since its the phone I currently own. I used to love android but now ever since my dad gave me an iPad, I'm thinking to myself iOS is not as bad as I once thought. I've been playing games on it and iOS has far better games IMO and you can't theme android unless you know what you're doing or have a nonstock launcher. Anyway I don't wanna turn this into an iOS vs android debate. I just wanna know what I can do with my sgs3 to make it better being rooted stock (not into flashing roms anymore) would love to know to theme with touchwiz being my launcher and maybe some good apps and games? Thanks guys you all do such great work
http://www.androidpolice.com/tags/games/ You can use sites like android police which run a lot of apps/games reviews, which is what i love about the site. If you're bored with Android over games then you only have what iOS give you, what i mean to say on Android you can run emulators etc. If you really like the games on iOS then get a iPod Touch, that's one route. If you're bored of Android overall, you will get bored of iOS even sooner, the novelty runs off when you realize although the apps my look prettier essentially the functionality of their Android counterpart is the same.
edit: Also check out post like this form AP:

You mean you can't make your own themes unless you know what you're doing? Because it's fairly easy to customize it once you know how. It does take a lot of time though... but have you check out the available themes? There are many launchers to play around with. You should really explore more. Although you said you've used androids for awhile... i don't think you even scratched the surface.

Go the next chapter: LEARN ANDROID. There are endless possibilities once you've got the ins & outs of the Android platform.
Once you've done that and understood how the platform works...its time to get into development.
There are so many things you can do with Android...and no its not just theming. Lol.
Work on your app drawer

Oh trust me I've tried like almost all launchers at one point that was available at the time. I've always went back to stock which was sense at the time. I just like stock and hate how you can't theme touchwiz .i mean you can but I have no knowledge in doing so and don't have much time to sit and figure it out ATM. And you're right back when I had the touch diamond I tried the iPhone 3G and got easily bored with it. I guess eventually the iPad will have same result. Thanks for the replies.
Same boat here. I starting to get bored of android. At times I'm jealous of the apple ecosystem. I mean I don't game much but finding a decent pair of headphone that is fully conpatible with this phone is a pain in the ass

Theming isn't that hard either. I've been able to theme without even knowing much about how it even works just by changing images. The way I've sort of figured out how to do it is using root explorer. I'll download a rom that is themed and I'll unzip the systemui.apk and basically just look through the images there. Based on the locations of particular images I'll know where to put new ones. Framework-res.apk also has stuff to look thorough add well as lidroid-res.apk. It's not original stuff but I can manage to cherry pick stuff to make my phone look the way I like. Usually changing toggles and batteries. Eventually I'd like to look into how to really theme or maybe even dev, but for now I'll leave that to the experts
Funny, I've been thinking about switching it up to IOS lately as well. Except in my case, it's not so much about being bored with Android. For me it's the need to stop spending so much damn time messing with my phone. Recently I've started looking at the iPhone's inability to easily customize IOS and install other ROMs/themes as a real positive. It would be nice to once again have a phone that I just look at as a productive tool than a toy to mess with.
After being an avid Android user for the past 3 years, some days I really do miss the simplicity of my old iPhone.
I have a curiosity with the upcoming HTC 8X. I have invested quite a bit of money on Android but I like new toys too.

Try MIUI Launcher.. See what that does for you...
As far as time spent on Android modding and so on. I agree. Apple does tout productive. And it is, to a point. My father in law is a wedding photographer. He uses Apple computers when he needs to edit some. Though he does not need an iPhone for that, it is nice to have most of your hardware from the same company so that the eco system feels complete.
To those on Android that feel like it consumes to much time in doing so. My suggestion is to use a little self control with your devices. I will attest to that being harder than said. But, it is doable. If you need to mod, then do only necessary or central things such as rooting to get useful apps to work. Some home replacement apps have the ability to save the state of setup. Technically this does not have to be such a daunting task, take a couple of days to do this. It doesn't have to be a one day consuming event.
Nowm the one thing that thw iPhone lines have over Android phones is the super wicked frikking awsome accessories hands down. Actually infuriates me at times. The SGS3 should have the same by now. It is on almost all carriers. Oh well, regardless Android rocks. And that is because the Devs that support our phones kick but. You want to talk about time consuming? Devs spend uber amounts of it on thesenphones for us. And the don't ask to get paid for it. And they have jobs and family's like we do.
Also, the act of even having thus tech no matter it be Android, Apple or any other. That in it self is time consuming. I say lets shut down the whole computing and electrical industries and start from scratch. Just live off the land. Essentially, we do things to stay alive. So get rid of all unnecessary things. You will save a bunch of time. Time is only relative to how you spend it. If you live your life to truly better others and your own lives. Then you will not waste any time. Time is only wasted when you and those around you are unhappy.
Ok I'm done, I just went into this long dissertation on life relatively. Sorry.
I just flashed the latest ROM five minuets ago and am finally getting thirty hours of battery time! This is sick!!
So this might be a short story
Back in 2010 I got into android,I wanted to save money left att and got me android phone (htc hero )I actually really like it , 2 months later the evo was announced and I got it the day it came out,now the phone changed everything love the big screen, éclair was good but froyo came out a few months later(yeah the update only took htc few months) and since I had rooted my hero I decided to give it a try on htc evo 4G, rooted and started flashing away, sometimes as bad as 3-4 roms a day. Only rom the would last me a week would be warm 2.2(myn recognized developer) and I got tired of it, didn't have more problems with money I got an iPhone 4 like it but hate it the notifications, switch around 4-5 android phones and by the end of 2011 I was tired of flashing and looking at xda every minute of my life, on October 14 last year I got my 32gb iPhone 4S, got rid of my gs2 (hated the slow camera) And evo 3D. The iPhone last it me a while, when out the country, love the app selection and the pic quality, nothing IMO was better, but htc releases the one x and I like the phone a lot but is on att exclusive so I didn't get it, the gs3 gets announce and I didn't like the whole nature UX crap, plus I was worried about the camera. Sprint gets the Galaxy Nexus and I went to check it out, I ended up buying it, love the phone but hate it the network and the camera... Evo LTE comes out and I got it as well, I took it to Mexico for vacations love the pictures and the screen is just amazing, but sprint here in vegas got overload, speeds sucks... Decided that I wanted to switch networks, I decided to get tmobile a try and get the one s, really slim and nice looking phone but storage sucks and screen was crap compare to 4s and the evo lte, I decided to switch to the gs3(even tho I didn't like it at first) because of the screen resolution and the extra memory, one month ago I was in the same spot as you, the new iPhone was about to get announced I wanted something that was useful and I didn't want to mess anymore, decide to go back to stock(not root). Really like the speed of the phone, great camera, etc. But I couldn't find apps, the play store sucks at that sometimes, on launch day I got me an iPhone 5 and is the best looking phone I ever seen. Not matter what anyone says the phone just look stunning, once I set up my iPhone from icloud I get all my apps and settings back to how I used to have on my 4s it amazes me how good apple could be with some stuff. Didn't like the OS same row of icons from 2007 :/ returned the phone and decided to keep my gs3, plus all my apps had black bars because it hasn't been optimize for the new display. Going back to the gs3 I'm still dealing with apps problem, I asked in the forums and people gave me some good responses, i started using app Aware and looking around the web. Now I have a lot good apps and games that I thought android just didn't have I'm happy with the phone and enjoy it, I think one of the biggest problems with xda members is that we keep flashing the phone too much and it feels more like a task then enjoyment. That's my point of view just enjoy your phone. You can go ahead try iPhone, trust me you going to be excited but who wouldn't is a new phone but at the end I decided to stick up with Android. Google ics changed a lot of the bad things and jellybean as well, I'm excited to see what the next update will have
Sorry for the long post... I might have some mistakes, kind of sleepy when I wrote this...

Is this thread serious?
The beauty of Android is not in simplicity, it's in the ability to choose simplicity if you so desire.. without being forced to.
Perhaps some people can't help themselves and spend hours every week customizing their phone. But that in itself is not an OS issue, it's a self control issue.
Saying that the iOS's restriction on customization would make you more productive is the equivalent to thinking that being in a straight jacket would keep you from using drugs. Of course it would, but it does not address your specific personal issue.
Don't blame Android for your own lack of discipline. Seriously, that is one of the funniest/saddest things I have read on this forum.
I have spent countless hours playing around with customization. When I got bored of it, I simply set up my phone to be the productive tool that some are claiming makes iOS better. Eco system? I have multiple devices from different manufacturers and everything works seamlessly. Yes, it takes more intellect to figure out everything since you pretty much don't have to do anything to make iOS products interact. In fact, they do all the thinking for you. You and your wife have iPhones? And an iPad, and Mac? Great! When those pictures you took automatically sync to every device you own, you can share everything you have in your phone with everyone in your household.. whether you want to or not. Of course, there are safeguards you can set up to prevent certain things from happening, but OH NO - you would have to learn something and spend some time customizing your setup.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. I have a 55" LG 3D Cinema Smart TV. A Phillips Bluetooth/Android docking stereo. A PC running Windows XP. I can stream my entire music collection through my TV's wireless Bluetooth surround sound system. Or I can stream my Google Music collection through my Phillips Bluetooth stereo/dock, wirelessly or plugged in. I can control my TV from my Galaxy S3, just like a remote control with the LG Smart Remote app from the Play Store. I can stream locally stored music and videos from my S3 to my TV. I watch Hulu/Netflix on my phone, my TV, my PC. I can plug in my phone to my TV via HDMI adapter to watch my Google movies. Or I can watch my Vudu movie collection through my TV. I've barely scratched the surface.
My phone is running Jellybean (CM10), Google Wallet, and Apex. I have no icons anywhere on my home screens. I pinch my home screen and I'm taken to my text messages. I double tap it, file browser. One finger swipe up? App drawer opens. One finger swipe down, status bar. Two finger swipe down, camera. Two fingers up, Quickpic gallery. I pay for stuff by putting my phone against a paypass terminal everywhere. Grocery stores, 7-11, multiple fast food joints, Macy's, CVS, soda machines, gas stations, etc. My facebook feed and news both on separate full screen scrollable widgets. I talk to Google to find out what's going on with the Chargers/Dodgers. I tell it I'm hungry for a specific type of food and it shows me exactly where I can go and which one's the closest. The weather is in my status bar. My phone tells me how long it will take to get home from work, what kind of traffic there is, how many minutes to my favorite lunch spot - without even asking it.
Please tell me what is more productive than that. And I haven't even listed all the things I do with my phone, not even close.
Oh and as for games, I'm sorry.. did we forget about Grand Theft Auto 3? Modern Combat? NBA Jam? I could list another 20 bad ass games on Android, but I'm actually getting tired of typing. Maybe I should have just swyped this all on my phone's keyboard, since Android can do that...
Have fun with your iOS.
IOS is for the small dogs! Android is for the big dogs!!!!" Its that simply!!!!! Who agrees?!

Is Win Mobile worth moving to?

yea , I know Microsoft abandoned it (like most things they do , win mobile 2005) but Im sick google /android , not an itrash fanboi , had the samsung focus years back helped with interop unlock , just thinking if the x3 or 950xl or even the alcatal are still any good, seems like the specs are still fine for todays smartphones? Anyone want to tell me yea or nay?
It depends on what you need from the smartphone.
To me it seems it would be flawless in my work as a Desktop Support Analyst
support ends end of year, so nearly all apps will go away so stay at Android
Well , ill stay for now, but google cant be trusted , android is dying a d they dont even know it, just like iphone
I would love nothing more than to go back to my WP, but honestly, it's just not worth the hassle. I used my Icon for about a week recently, and it was just an exercise in frustation. Windows 10 mobile is still slow, buggy, and most apps haven't been updated forever so a lot of them just plain don't work. If you only text and call, it might be worth it, but it's really up to how much you can tolerate. I gave up on it because mine kept rebooting in the middle of calls. It got to a point that i had to change because my boss wasn't too happy with me. I've tried about everything i can to stay away from google and apple, but at the end of the day, nothing is supported enough to really be usable otherwise. I've got my eye on postmarketOS, but development is early days so it will be a while before it will be usable.
In the past 3 years, i've been through android, webos (i tried to go back to a pre and veer for a while), symbian (bought an 808), wp, KaiOS (nokia 8110 4g), and i'm on iPhone now. Webos and Symbian were great in their heyday, but they are VERY painful to use now. It's a chore to even browse the web. KaiOS has potential, but it's still pretty rough around the edges. Google invested pretty heavily into them as well, so whether that bothers you or not is something to consider. I swore I'd never use an iPhone, but it's been the most reliable out of all of them I've had and has lasted me the longest. My brother is running lineageOS without google apps, so if google is your problem like it is with us, that might be an option for you. You will make compromises with whatever you choose.
I agree, you sound like me , i just dont trust google or apple , if the iphone was straight unix not associated with apple it would more be more worthy .
Yes, i think ill try lineage if i can on my Moto z3 play , i never really cared for googles or the carriers updates, always rooting , unlocking etc and running custom roms. But i havent had the time, would really be nice to have a windows phone that compliments my work station, not sure Microsoft cares , i know apple and google dont care
