Creative 2nd Uses - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I finally gave up the ghost on my 8525 a couple months back. Now, as it sits here collecting dust, I'm searching for creative solutions to a 2nd life for it. I've used it as a mini browser around the house, but that's getting stale.
Does anyone have suggestions before I turn it over to a donation?
Thoughts:
All-in-one remote: My Palm worked for years in this capacity.
BT keyboard for tivo or PS3?
Are there apps out there already?
TIA

If it has WiFi, can't you use it as a VoIP phone or run Skype on it? Otherwise you could probably experiment with the bluetooth (or the WiFi) to hook it up to some relays for home automation Depends on how skilled you are with programming, and -- I guess -- with the soldering iron
If you still feel like donating it tho I wouldn't mind getting a new toy ;D
Cheers,
Chris

haha.. i dont mind the donation too

Thanks for the offer guys, but I was meaning donation to charitable organizations where cell phones are in need.

Skype works excellent on the 8525. I used it for ages when my cellular was turned off. Just find a hotspot. (There are hotspot finding apps for the phone).
OR.
You could install a bunch of games on it and use it as a timekiller. I had lines etched into my screencover in the bejeweled layout. ALL of the popcap games are very well done on this phone. Bathroom break at work anyone??
Killer MP3 player and youtube watching machine. MP3 players are nice to have, and the Slide2Play thing is executed excellently. And for youtube, well, if you've been bored at a bar or restaurant with wifi, THIS is the thing to have with you! Don't like whats on TV? Fine i'll watch my own.
Lets see, what else has my phone done....
1. Use it as a digital camera with wifi.
2. Install the latest roms here and make people who buy NEW phones jealous.
3. Use it as a digital picture frame/clock on your desk running S2U2.
Theres a million uses. Just think about it.

I bought a Dash to use as a PDA only. Was this a good idea?

Hey,
I just bought one of these on ebay with the idea of using it as a PDA only. Can anyone tell me why this would be a bad idea? Like, ... it will still turn on and I can use it without a sim card, right?
The reason I went with the Dash was because I wanted something with:
wifi
bluetooth
skype capabilities
PIM
thumbpad
mic
stereo out
can play mp3's / video
expandable memory
cheap $$ <150
I looked at the Treo 650, the Mylo Com-1, Tungsten C, etc.
I also looked at a few without thumbpads like the TX and the dell pda and stuff.
I decided on this thing because it is really small, runs wm6.1 which seems to have an active community of developers, has an active community of users with useful forums like the one I am currently posting on.
This presents me with the obvious problem that this is not really designed to be a PDA... it is a phone, after all.
So, the question I present to you is this. Was this a good idea? Will I find the neutered phone too annoying for daily use as a PDA?

Sounds like you are getting what you want and cheap, pretty much is a personal digital assistant, you will want to put a sim in it but you can get the phone unlocked here @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355789
So as to use any network except 3.
All in all i think you will be impressed with your purchase.
My opinion.
If I were you, I would have have purchased a PPC...
Touchscreen and a better selection of programs are the benefit.
The Dash is great for a smart phone, but not so great as a plain old PDA.
Again, my opinion only.
In my opinion your a GENIOUS THE S620 IS FREAKING INCREDIBLE YOU CAN HACK THIS THING TO DO ANY DAMN THING A ppc can do PLUS ITS THE SMALLEST OUT THERE HECK AN EXTRA BATTERY IS 5 BUCKS IT RULES.....sorry for the caps I just Love THIS Smartphone
I LOVE my dell axim x51v, awesome audio, video support. skype works well, SD and CF slot, so you can get a frigging lot of memory on there. And the community "has been" pretty active and the ROM is much better then the original.
But the dash is great for what you want. however if i did use my dash for audio/ video purposes, i would be disappointed by battery life, speaker placement, and cost of microSD.
I need to find something similar to sliding panels for my x51v, and I'd be set.
Due to a shipping error my dash JUST arrived today (~$110 shipped). My accessories have been arriving slowly over the last week, so I was able to test everything pretty extensively.
I bought a 2gb microsd card ($5 shipped) to load up with roms for dual use between my homebrew wii (with microsd-> sd adapter) and my dash. I also bought an 8gb micro sdhc card(~$25 shipped) and a 3.5" headphone adapter (~$6 shipped)
I put some music on the 2gb card as I think I need an update before I use the sdhc. I played some mp3's with the WM software. Nothing fantastic - definitely not as good as a standalone mp3 player, but this could just be the software. I will try tcpmp later.
I turned the phone off in connection settings, turned the wifi on and set that up with my home router. My hope is that disabling the phone will mitigate some of the battery life problems I've read about using the wifi. I browsed around with ie a little bit. It was pretty quick. I will need to install a better web browser - i've seen a few mentioned here.
Other than that... i'm not sure where to begin. I'll need to load up one of these custom roms, install some applications, get syncing working with ubuntu, set up email, etc.
My initial impression is that this was definitely the right choice. I had never actually seen one of these until I opened my box today. I used Sizeazy.com to compare the size of the dash to other devices before I ordered, but I did not realize it was this small! The keypad is going to take a little while to get used to. But yeah, I think this is going to work pretty well as a PDA.
it was a good deal man
Seems like a great deal. The Dash is great for value, flexibility and connectivity.
A touch screen WM6 Professional with similar or more features and a slide out keypad would be better as a PDA. But it could be tough to find, especially without a contract, for the price of a Dash.
As mentioned above, you can get the Dash to do much of what a WM6 PDA can do. But I find my self wanting a WM6 PDA more and more.
And as for a browser, definitely install the Free Opera Mini. It's among the best.
i just dl it (opera). it does work a lot faster. i kept trying to log in here to reply. i would thumb in my username and password and it would say i was logged in successfully, but, when i clicked the link to redirect me back to here, i wouldn't be logged in! after 5 tries i remembered to refresh the page (it was loading from cache).
thanks for the tips!
let me know if you think of anything else that might be useful to a new dash owner.

Custom Car Mount

Update: 2011062601 Basically my car doesn't really have anywhere that looks nice to mount this thing. I just ordered some HDPE bar stock from McMaster Carr after completely redesigning my approach. I'll update Tuesday when my shipment arrives. Ugh... what a pain in the ass.
I know this will be disappointing for you to read right this moment as nothing is done, but I just got off work and I'm about to start making my custom fiberglass dash mount kit. Since CM7 hasn't gotten official GPS kernel modules yet for the LG G2x, I'm using my Tab10.1 as my navigation unit. Here is what I plan on doing, maybe not all this weekend but it will be a work in progress. If you want to get an idea, check it out here http://forum.androidcentral.com/motorola-xoom/67247-car-dock.html
Here is what will happen to my 09 Chevy HHR:
Custom made mold, bracket and swivel stand to hold tablet
Hide-away hinge that will allow me to fold it down and in when not in use
Wireless router and ethernet web cam for use with IP Cam Viewer as a rearview camera.
If any one would like to chime in on good ideas, please let me know. As I said, I'm starting right now making the fiberglass mold so you can expect pictures up by the end of the night. My only design concern is accommodating a TPU case down the road, so I might build it big.
I love this kind of stuff... Looking forward to it!

I heard if you input from a place with wifi such as home, gps will still lock while driving, even without a connection. Also, people load the maps into the devuce to use it without connections

Depends on the map program. Google Maps (and therefore Google Navigation), the default map and navigation program, does not allow you to load maps. At best, it will pre-cache your directions if you input your route while using wifi. This is useful only if you (a) stay exactly on course (i.e., never require a re-route), and (b) don't use any real-time features like POI, traffic, etc. Hence my question.
Sorry for the late response... to be honest I've had a whole weekend of fail with this...
To answer the questions about GPS... look at your application data size for Google Maps after a week of use. I do intend to tether from my phone but mostly because of Google Music, Pandora, GroVeIP and porn...
There is a substantial ammount of map cache and when not using wifi I am able to get a decent resolution of my route, however, I haven't tried veerinng off course to test whether it actually caches roads... We'll see. I've heard through forums before though that Google had planned on implementing this fully specifically because of WiFi only Android devices
why not just buy the multimedia dock and fit it somewhere around the dashboard? personally I'm gonna wait for Brodit to release a mount

HTC Media Link HD quick review

The medialink HD arrived this morning, as it was a free gift courtesy of phones4u. I played around with it for 2 hours, and this is what I think:
It was incredibly easy to set up and use, it even came with a stand so you can stick it on top of your HDTV. So that is a nice little bonus!
The actual product itself is MUCH smaller than I thought it would be, I thought it would be at least the size of the One X, but no, it's pretty damn small!
One thing I noticed, is that when playing an intense game like Blood and glory, it stutters for the for 2 minutes of gameplay, then it seems to run like a hot knife through butter, I found this was the same with web browsing too!
HD content and games overall look amazing, HTC actually got something right first time for once! I really recommend this product to ANYONE with a One X! Any questions more than welcome of course
First question, can I buy yours off you? £20 delivered?

Neither to my knowledge, but then again have not tried it with wifi off, does not use bluetooth. and I can be a good 6 metres away before it stutters
Hi, Got mine this morning so thought I would add my own review.
Agree with OP, much smaller than I expected, making it very portable. Will upload some pictures shortly. Its made of plastic, but has a good weight to it, to make it not feel cheap. The box it came in was rubbish though!
To clarify questions I originally had -
It needs a WiFi connection to work
It needs to be plugged in to a power supply. Cable Provided
It uses HDMI. Cable provided
Minor lag after initial start up, but then ok.
Quick Buffer rates.
At the minute (I've only played around with it for an hour or so) but my feelings are its OK. I'm not blown away by it just yet and here is why.
Didn't want to connect initially despite me following the 5 simple steps to the letter. They really are simple so might say something about me! To the point I was going to send it back. Eventually though it worked, although i did exactly what I had originally. (Thinking it through it may be due to me having several broadband connections in my house, it may have switched midway through pairing)
As OP said, the first minute or 2 you experience random lag for 1, maybe 2 seconds at a time, after that its all good.
If I am playing a video, i cant see it on the phone as the image freezes on the first film image, although it plays fine on the TV.
It didn't want to work with MX PLayer, so had to use stock for viewing recordings and downloaded videos.
I don't have any "True" HD content on my phone yet (700mb stuff ;P), but this highlights the lack of quality that you don't originally see on the phones screen. Netflix for example, although picture is good on the phone, it is clearly a "stream" on the TV as the image is pixelated slightly. ESPN goals is the same (although on phone its not great, on TV is clearly worst).
If the phone content is in HD, games etc (I assume same with films), it looks sweet, and ignoring the start up lag it works really well for games.
In summary (and I don't want this to sound like im knocking it), I think it is more of a party piece, rather than a day to day item you would use. Great for sharing pictures or videos you have taken with family/friends rather than them passing your phone around the room.
Its very quick, images/video buffer very fast and play within seconds. Apart from MX Player, everything I have asked it to display on the TV it has, so there are no copyright restrictions that I can see at this stage, unlike AppleTV.
A perfect accessory for those that travel alot or spend a lot of time in hotel rooms.

There is about 0.2 second lag if you are using it for hardcore gaming. I just thought I would point that out.
It is a fantastic concept and well executed....other than the horrible shiny black casing that comes slightly marked and gets further marked by breathing on it.
It uses your Wi-Fi network. The phone somehow informs the media link of your WiFi network and password. I am not sure how it achieves this. After doing so, the Media link has an IP address. It will automatically update its firmware when you are not using it. So further improvements for some of the hesitancy that some of reported may come.
But it truly is plug and play.

And it knows your WiFi password and stuff due to the fact it is only transmitting the One X display to the TV, if it did need a password you would surely need a HDTV with internet capabilities too.
Received mine from dialaphone today. Very easy to set up but seems to be quite laggy for me, might experiment with different frequencies in case its interfering with my WiFi.
The problem i seem to have with this is that when i am playing a movie i am supposed to be able to leave the movie running and use my phone as normal,
This does not happen it justs says screen locked on my phone any button i press like home or running apps stops the movie playing

What do you do with your Nexus 7?

Hey guys,
Since I got my Nexus 5 (9 months ago),
I'm having hard time to find any use case for the N7 - the N5 does everything I need!
I want to revive my N7 usage and looking for some nice ideas -
what do you do with your N7?
do you carry it around with you?
what do you do with it that you don't do with your smartphone?
Cheers
Reading books, Facebook, little email, games for kids... I split the time between N7 and N10 depending on battery status and kids' needs.
I have a Sony Xperia M as a main phone and I rarely take the tablets out of house...

wow, you really carry the N7 with you everyday, along with your smartphone?
I use it to travel (replaced a bigger, thicker, much heavier HP TouchPad). Read books on the plane, read emails, browse, watch videos in the hotel. I also bring it in my work bag and use it if I go to lunch at a place with free wifi. Even as small as the 7 inc screen seems compared to larger tablets, my phone's screen (S3) is even smaller and I much prefer to use the N7 for the above usecases. I think that would even be true with a larger phone (phablet).

Depends. I don't have an unlimited data plan anymore, so depending on how much data I have used I will use my personal phone as a hot spot on weekends on the rare occasion I can't access a free hotspot and I need to be connected. If I am at work and at lunch, I might use my work phone (a S4) as a hot spot, but only if I am working through lunch.
I was on vacation a few months ago in an area with very limited wifi (none in the condo unit), so I used my personal phone as a hot spot but again I tried to limit usage (heck... I was on vacation, and didn't really need to be connected that much). Even with that in mind, I hit my limit when I had to download a new ROM on my phone to resolve an issue.

No problem. I am very happy with the N7 (2013, Flo model) running SlimKat 8.0. Sure, it would be great if it was a tad larger (screen diameter) without making the tablet too much larger (less bezel). Battery length is fine, speed is fine, and so far everything app I need works well on the N7.
And... getting access to free wifi is getting easier and easier. I tend to choose places that offer it (hopefully if more people do, more businesses will offer wifi). Near my office I have a Taco Cabana, a Panda Express, and a McDonalds (all McD's offer great wifi). Airports are hit and miss still it seems... I hate the ones that use wifi businesses that push you to buy wifi. Most hotels offer at least basic wifi.
As my eyes get progressively worse with age (and I have both a strabisnus prob and nearsightedness) the cell phone screen just isn't large enough for extended use. So a tablet I can easily put in my pocket is a great tool. And... it doesn't bend.

And... getting access to free wifi is getting easier and easier.
And... it doesn't bend.

hahah! not willing to try to bend it though
My LTE N7 is basically an alternate to my Note 2; anything "tablety" I want to do I do on my Note 8.0. I like the N7 but I love my big Note!
My phone (S3) is used for all above things outside of the house. As soon as I get home, phone gets put away and N7 comes out.
Youtube reading books. and fb
btw there is a good drift race i often play it:good:
Just bought a nexus 7 for work, I use it with Nethunter for penetration testing
I use mine around the home mostly, or while on holiday. Saves having to rape the battery on my phone.

Sure do! I use hotspot from m7 for data. I have unlimited sprint plan so I have no barriers! As I said, it is a multimedia device for me. At home I am casting and when traveling watching movies. This tab handles all of it. With the help of clean rom of course, which is far and away the best for me!!

I use mine for candy crush.

[Q] Link Multiple Nexus 7's Car Install

So I am about to start my install in a 08 Chrysler Aspen. I have everything I need to swap the stock radio for a Nexus 7, I have been messing around with all the software and hardware for a week or so and think that most issues are worked out. I am running CM12 nightlies just because I am a bleeding edge type of guy and I like Cyangoenmod's implementation of extra features. They run on the ElementalX Kernel so that OTG charging and deep sleep are possible. Now the fun part that I have not seen anyone else do, that I can find anyway. I have two outdated, barely working, please replace me 7" no name linked DVD players in the headrests. Honestly, the market for those is utterly pitiful and overpriced, full of hardware that is practically obsolete, and runs on proprietary software. No thank you. Luckily I have two Nexus 7's, soon to be three.
I am software engineering student, so I have skills in that department, and I dabble in all things electronic. I can usually find a way to make anything work. So far on first thought I have successfully set up Nexus2 to wake from deep sleep when power connects, then via Tasker open Allcast Receiver. Which I can then cast media from Nexus1 to be viewed on Nexus2, then to Nexus3 via Koush's Mirror Beta. The great thing about Allcast and Allcast Receiver is that only a WiFi connection is needed, no need to have internet access. This setup works better than I expected, with very minimal lag on the Mirror( I tested this using my Gs3 as the third device). Ultimately I would like to pass video through hardware instead of software. Herein lies my question. I can accept a video stream, but I have been unable to find any examples of sending media to essentially a second monitor through hardware alone. I am sure there is a way through SSH, similar to this, but I would like 2 and 3 to be able to be used independently as I am going to make them easily removable. For example if my kids want to play a game , they can just take it out and it is back to normal tablet form.
If there is nothing available, the casting/mirroring route will suffice for the time being. I would just like something a little less vulnerable. Casting/Mirroring are relatively new and there are occasional crashes. Anyone who has young children knows that patience is not a word in their vocabulary. Plug and play, no crashes is my optimal goal.
Sorry for the essay, I hope that someone can help. I will post pictures of the install process here, and I'll start a new thread for a complete DIY.
One more thing, has anyone seen headrests made specifically to mount a Nexus 7? I can modify my current ones, but a prefabbed like this for iPad mini would be ideal.
I can't advise on the mirroring of the screens, but mounting the nexus in the headrests is something I can help with. Head over to my website www.rtafabrication.com
If your fabrication is up to scratch you could get a few Dash Panels and mount them yourself or I could do the fabrication for you. Location doesn't matter as I ship worldwide.
Just thought it might be something you're looking for.
