I have followed the steps found elsewhere on this site to allow almost any app to run from SD. I have seen cautionary notes about unmounting the SD card and the potential nasty effects it can have. (Including how touchdown even cautions against moving the DB to the SD card).
Under what conditions could I unmount my SD car. I know that connecting to my PC and choosing to connect as disk drive. What about using HTC sync?
If I do unmount the SD card is there any precautions that I can take to avoid corrupting theses apps or DB (Force close before connecting)
Next in a much more general question. Is it possible that whith a future release of Android OS that all apps, widgets and data can be run from SD card regardless of whether root access is required or not. Or is more of a core functionality that will always prevent some apps from running from the SD.
Appreciate any and all replies.
Come on guys a little help here
Please I have seen that this group is filled with Brainiacs that could answer this question in their sleep.
I know that it is a noob question but I did research it first before posting it.
Anything from anyone would be helpful
I use Froyo A2SD, and have never had a problem. I certainly don't do anything special.
On your second question, it won't be a problem in the future because the hardware is better specified. If you look at the Desire Z and HD they have way more app space in the first place, rendering any form of A2SD obsolete.

Dave
Thanks Dave!
Dave,
First off thanks for the reply.
1. Do you ever use HTC sync yourself? Also it should be noted that I ran the modification to force apps to run from the SD not just the ones that are market approved ones. Again the worrying note from Touchdown about corrupting the DB
2. Actually want I meant was will the phone we have (Desire) manage run from SD better with any future software updates. It is disappointing to have an 8Gb card and not be able to load up with tons of apps.
As much as I would like to update my phone that is not an option for me as I have had the phone less than 2 months.

Hi there everyone,
I just decided yesterday to root and flash LeeDroid 1.9a, and what a nice ROM.
Then today I was about to transfer my music, and Navigon maps wich is something
like 4 GB's of DATA. But then the trouble begins, as somewhere in the process, the
device locks up, and the only thing to do is removing the battery. I am not really
secure about this, and after the second time it happened, I am getting a little scared
about trying this again. I was trying to do the job connecting the device with the
cable, and setting the device to "diskdrive mode".
The reason I thinks it locks up, is because of the App2SD+ implementation, but as
I am not very experienced with this, I really do not have any proof.
Maybe someone has another more secure method of dealing with file transfers, or
is the only option to remove the SD card and use a cardreader?
I am sorry if anyone needs clarification of anything as english is not my native
language.

usually it is best to post questions regarding problems with individual roms in the thread specific to that rom.... (a tip for the future )
BUT - usually I prefer to move large chunks of data around by removing the sd card and using a card reader or pc slot. always seems more reliable (and faster as well).
Good luck!
I use LeeDroid as well, often plug-in the phone in data transfer mode but never once see a problem..
Do precautions though, such as both eject usb device (on windows) and change to usb charging (on the phone), before unplugging.. I feel safer when having redundancy
from my Desire + XDA App
Thats also why I am wondering why it went wrong with my device.
Are you using App2SD+ as well, or is it App2SD with Modinstalllocation?
Have you tried transferring large chunks of data, lets say 3-4 GB's?

Good eveneing dear community
I realize that FroYo was a major leap forward for quite a few of us, especially those limited in phone storage (I'm talking about Nexus One and Desire owners in particular). However, I think there is something seriously wrong with those App2SD capabilities.
I recently got the impression that moving applications to SD storage is killing SD cards too fast. Just after the first official FroYo OTA, I discovered and used the posibility to force move applications to SD storage using ADB shell. The result was that virtually any application could be moved out of the phone's internal storage. So far, so good.
But considering that we get updates from the market every few hours, SD cards are under much more pressure now than they were designed to, aren't they? I'm saying this, because in the exact same configuration I mentioned above, my cards keep dying. Before the OTA, I bought an expensive class 10 Kingston microSDHC card and the performance was indeed remarkable. However, after the OTA and my ADB stunt, my card would get mounted as read-only every few days now. In addition to that, I can't run any applications on the card anymore and the entire system becomes unstable. Unmounting the card using the Android system settings is not possible and neither is formatting. Instead, my phone would sometimes reboot. At first I thought this was a problem with my Kingston SD.
When I ran some tests and did the same things with the official 4 GB card that shipped with my phone as well as with another 8 GB card that came with an older Nokia phone of mine I realized that it wasn't a problem specific to my Kingston card. All of them showed the exact same behavior. This is not just annoying, it also causes data loss, which in my case is unnacceptable!
Has anybody experienced the same? Is this a problem of Android 2.2 or is it just the way microSDHC works? What, besides mounting said damaged cards in a Laptop in attempt fix, can we do about it?
Thank you for any suggestions.
My next phone must have at least 8 GB of internal storage...
Define "dying".
If by dying you mean Android reports there's something wrong with your card, then more likely the problem is software-related rather than the SD being overused.
I got the "your card is fubar" message from my phone but it was as a result of me damaging the file system with a sketchy file manager app. I put it in my computer, did a scandisk. This found the problem, fixed it, I put it back in my phone, voila, perfect again.
Or your problem might be related to the method you're forcibly moving the apps to your SD card. Since you're doing it with ADB rather than through the operating system itself, it's possible apps are corrupting your card's file system as a result of not realizing where they're located. Just a guess.
In any case, SD cards don't (and won't) die from the sort of use you're describing. What might be harmful is storing frequently-used cache on your SD card, but that's not something that you're doing.
Keep in mind that SD cards are intended to be used in cameras, camcorders, etc, and these things write a lot more frequently and aggressively to the card than a little app storage here and there.
I'm not exactly an expert but I'm definitely what I'd call an enthusiast, and let me tell you with certainty: you really have nothing to worry about. Your problem is most likely a software (or related file system issue) or else caused by a one-in-a-thousand random hardware defect. Android, or more specifically, app to SD, isn't a problem.
Maybe you've heard of solid state drives for computers, these are becoming more common. I use one in fact. They operate using technology similar to SD card storage and if ANYTHING was going to stress these things, it would be running a whole computer off them, temp files and all.
Finally, if you're still a little afraid, let me remind you that in fact your phone itself uses the same kind of flash storage as an SD card. Every phone, MP3 player, and similar device does. So in a sense, if wearing out your storage is a concern for you, isn't it better to wear out a replaceable SD card than your phone's irreplaceable internal storage?
----
So now assuming you trust me that there's nothing to worry about, I would suggest you stop forcibly moving apps to your SD card as a possible long-term solution. If you stop getting card problems, you know what the problem was. Since this means you'll run low on storage, I'd then suggest you install a custom OS that allows you to force-move apps from within Android itself, such as Cyanogenmod.
I've been using this mod since it came out and have had no problems. As mentioned above it must be software related to your phone.

Thank you so much for calming me down. I just got the impression that my cards are toast. However, as long as there is a possibility to fix this using my laptop, I'm on the good side.
I disabled that ADB stunt, let's look what the next few days bring.
Just an idea: if your phone (or the sd slot, for that matter) would be somehow messed up, wouldn't that show the same symptoms? It would even explain why _every_ card acts that way. Maybe it's a bad contact in the slot, who knows...
Can someone please point me to some info that explains why widgets break when the associated app is moved to the SD card? My company is about to release an Android app and some people in beta are complaining that we do not allow them to move it to the SD card.
I realize there are ways around this (link2sd, etc), but I don't think this is the answer I'm looking for in this situation. I have tried searching both XDA and Google and can't seem to find an explanation of what is exactly is going on that causes widgets to break.
Thanks for any help.
It's just the way it works. The short answer is that Android won't even show a widget in the list if the app has been moved to the SD.
There are a few reasons for that. For one, the home screen shows up on boot before applications that are on the SD have fully initialized. Some will be there, but some continue to load as the home screen comes up, I guess to make the phone feel like it's booting faster. Each app on the SD card is in an encrypted container that needs to be decrypted and mounted. Another factor is that the app disappears if the SD card is unmounted (either physically or by mounting it as USB storage).
Basically they would have needed to write a hook into the home screen app to handle re-initializing widgets as they become available again. They either just didn't do that, or they might have decided widgets are something that should always show up and not be subject to the state of the SD card.
It's not an ideal situation. On the one hand, there are some apps that have widgets that some users may not plan to use. In that case, I'd want the ability to move it as a user. You can certainly allow them to do that, but then the widget just disappears from the option list when they move it. It doesn't provide any warning saying "only do this if you don't plan to use the widget." So it's a catch-22 for developers. If they disable moving to SD, users who don't want to use the widget will be irritated. If the enable it, users who don't understand the ramifications will be confused and irritated. There's no ideal solution at this point.
With everything going on in the news with apps being able to read your media I was wondering how easy it is for someone to access your information from your phone.
While on the phone you can use a pin or password to prevent someone from going into your phone and I know that there are apps that will individually allow you to password protect individual apps or even "hide" your media if someone gets your phone. You can do a remote wipe of the card with some of the security software but you have be quicker than the "thief" in activating the wipe.
What I have not been able to figure out is how I would protect the SD Card on the phone if someone pulled it out before I had a chance to do a remote wipe. I have not seen anything, with a general search, that will block access on the SD Card if someone puts it in a computer. Other than not loosing my phone what options are out there?
I am running a rooted EVO 4G using the Senseless version of tommytomatoes Classic Rom.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Encrypt the card?

If I encrypt the card won't it prevent the other apps from accessing data on the card? Also what will that do to the function of the apps that have been partially moved to the SD Card?
Is there a step by step on how to encrypt?
Thanks,
Doc
What I feel we really need is an app that manages permissions instead of having to blanket allow an app it would be nice if I had another app that could block some of those permissions if I feel like it , sure it may break the app using those apps but control and security are more important, maybe a toggle feature so you can toggle permissions for various apps and sort them by permission type. I have no idea if this can be done, I'm just an end user that sees a need. What do you guys think?
As for the op , in some cases your just screwed , nothing can ever be 100% secure , who is to say even if encrypted it can't be cracked ? And encrypting the sd card but allowing apps access defeats the purpose if the thief can access the data through those apps before you can start a remote wipe.

I wish someone would solve this problem as soon as possible, looking forward to it
I realize that not everything is 100% but it seems silly that no matter what precautions I take by using a pin lock or pass-phrase, it can be circumvented just by removing the SD Card. Of course if I encrypt the card then many of the apps may not work unless they have the functionality to decrypt/encrypt on the fly.
I just need to make sure to remotely wipe the card if I ever loose the phone.
Thanks to everyone who responded.

Hello everyone,
I am contacting you because i have many issues with the blackview A7 pro phone, that i have bought a week ago.
Shortly after my purchase many of the problems arose that are closely tied with the phone software (or so I believe).
First thing that troubles me the most, is the problem that is associated with the use of the SD card storage, that cannot be used as a place to store apps from my phone, except when I format my SD card as a internal storage. And even when I format my SD card as internal storage, i cannot see the correct value or my new storage (in gigabytes) because the old value doesn't add up to the value or the formatted SD card. The only option that I can use is the root if I want to move apps to SD card (!!!!)
Other thing is that internal memory is always reporting that I have 10.7 gb of memory instead of 16 gb, and there is no mention of where could possibly those 5 GB has gone!
I cannot root my phone because if I do this i will lose my warranty, or in the worst case, my phone will be bricked and it wont be useful anymore.
And I cant find any available root/roms out there on the internet except from your company and I am using the latest one that is: A7Pro-Blackview-V0.12-20171031_000220
One of the most intolerable problem is also the problem with wifi. The situation here is that any possible wifi network that i connect my a7 pro phone to, suffers from great oscillation and network loss.
Even if i am just a room away from ANY ROUTER i will have problems with oscillation from excellent to poor in just 10 seconds.
The other problem is the camera with its awful and poor quality regardless of the settings or application that i am using. Also the insult to injury is the lack of panorama option in the phones camera application. Other google play software cannot do the panorama option so well.
One other more tolerable problem is the complete lack of "look and feel" of the phones software and the inability to change or add other wallpapers or themes except when using the other peoples software from somewhere else (google play or any other platform). The built-in launcher3 is so poorly defined and so poorly supported that users are forced to change look and feel because of the awful design of the current software.
Does anyone know how can I resolve at least two of my problems (SD card problem and WiFi problem)?
Can anybody help?
anyone, please ? any help is much appreciated
is it possibile that i am posting this in the wrong sub-forum?
About your question, the first is pretty normal, every android since 6.0 have option to apply a extra storage with sd with formatting it ( i want rembemeber you that android not allow install on sd card normally, if not via root), also about your actual storage space again is normal, some gb are for file system and recovery, variuos brand have his own reservated space, so it can be changed from phone to phone. Since january is aviable a custom TWRP that can be installated trough SP flash tool, check on google. And for your last question is possible that is just a bug, so try to format the system and/or update your phone if aviable. Extra, for customizing yuor phone change launcher. Hope that will help you or someone else, there's nothing wrong in this low budget phone, every your question are common for any adroid device.
