[Q] Can you secure Photos on SDCARD? - General Accessories

With everything going on in the news with apps being able to read your media I was wondering how easy it is for someone to access your information from your phone.
While on the phone you can use a pin or password to prevent someone from going into your phone and I know that there are apps that will individually allow you to password protect individual apps or even "hide" your media if someone gets your phone. You can do a remote wipe of the card with some of the security software but you have be quicker than the "thief" in activating the wipe.
What I have not been able to figure out is how I would protect the SD Card on the phone if someone pulled it out before I had a chance to do a remote wipe. I have not seen anything, with a general search, that will block access on the SD Card if someone puts it in a computer. Other than not loosing my phone what options are out there?
I am running a rooted EVO 4G using the Senseless version of tommytomatoes Classic Rom.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Encrypt the card?

If I encrypt the card won't it prevent the other apps from accessing data on the card? Also what will that do to the function of the apps that have been partially moved to the SD Card?
Is there a step by step on how to encrypt?
Thanks,
Doc

What I feel we really need is an app that manages permissions instead of having to blanket allow an app it would be nice if I had another app that could block some of those permissions if I feel like it , sure it may break the app using those apps but control and security are more important, maybe a toggle feature so you can toggle permissions for various apps and sort them by permission type. I have no idea if this can be done, I'm just an end user that sees a need. What do you guys think?
As for the op , in some cases your just screwed , nothing can ever be 100% secure , who is to say even if encrypted it can't be cracked ? And encrypting the sd card but allowing apps access defeats the purpose if the thief can access the data through those apps before you can start a remote wipe.

I wish someone would solve this problem as soon as possible, looking forward to it

I realize that not everything is 100% but it seems silly that no matter what precautions I take by using a pin lock or pass-phrase, it can be circumvented just by removing the SD Card. Of course if I encrypt the card then many of the apps may not work unless they have the functionality to decrypt/encrypt on the fly.
I just need to make sure to remotely wipe the card if I ever loose the phone.
Thanks to everyone who responded.

How to keep your device secure?

Hi folks!
I am a little bit scared that one day my Hermes will fall into wrong hands... loosing it or getting it stolen. First of all, its important for me that a thief cant access my data (calendar, emails, files on storage card) - and a second goal would be to get the device back / know WHO took it.
Therefore I would like to know which kind of security-strategy you professional WM6 users are following?
What do you do to maintain physical security (like IIWPO or Ultimate Theft Alert) and what for information security (tools like Trust Digital or Utimaco Safeguard PDA)?
Lets ignore antivirus software for this thread - but dont forget about WM6 and please report about stability, performance and necessary changes in your workflow (like for backups, file recovery)
connected to exchange.. so pin number on wakeup, auto wipe if fail 4 times or something.
memory card data encrypted with built in encryption.
what more do you need?
i keep my hermes on me at all times.. no one is allowed to touch it.. if im not using it in my hands its in a case (the wizard case) and on my pants.. if a ***** gets to close ill straight up cut him/her

Autowipe... well - this is a critical feature... but not standard on any rom, is it?
I guess if some idiot just "tries" logging in and destroys your important data you didnt backup for a day... i guess this will end up in jacob-mda's solution
Unfortunatley killing each and everybody is not accepted by society here...
And for the encrypted storage card: What if you need to hardreset? Then you cant access this card anymore... correct?
**** if someone runs up on me to snatch my 600$ phone they are getting a knife in their stomach as we say around the way.. homie dont play that ..........lol jk
any more ideas?
I found a suitable, easy solution which doesnt change daily workflow. A request to the CHEFs is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315747

[Q] Run from SD / Non Rooted Desire

I have followed the steps found elsewhere on this site to allow almost any app to run from SD. I have seen cautionary notes about unmounting the SD card and the potential nasty effects it can have. (Including how touchdown even cautions against moving the DB to the SD card).
Under what conditions could I unmount my SD car. I know that connecting to my PC and choosing to connect as disk drive. What about using HTC sync?
If I do unmount the SD card is there any precautions that I can take to avoid corrupting theses apps or DB (Force close before connecting)
Next in a much more general question. Is it possible that whith a future release of Android OS that all apps, widgets and data can be run from SD card regardless of whether root access is required or not. Or is more of a core functionality that will always prevent some apps from running from the SD.
Appreciate any and all replies.
Come on guys a little help here
Please I have seen that this group is filled with Brainiacs that could answer this question in their sleep.
I know that it is a noob question but I did research it first before posting it.
Anything from anyone would be helpful
I use Froyo A2SD, and have never had a problem. I certainly don't do anything special.
On your second question, it won't be a problem in the future because the hardware is better specified. If you look at the Desire Z and HD they have way more app space in the first place, rendering any form of A2SD obsolete.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave!
Dave,
First off thanks for the reply.
1. Do you ever use HTC sync yourself? Also it should be noted that I ran the modification to force apps to run from the SD not just the ones that are market approved ones. Again the worrying note from Touchdown about corrupting the DB
2. Actually want I meant was will the phone we have (Desire) manage run from SD better with any future software updates. It is disappointing to have an 8Gb card and not be able to load up with tons of apps.
As much as I would like to update my phone that is not an option for me as I have had the phone less than 2 months.

Widgets breaking help

Can someone please point me to some info that explains why widgets break when the associated app is moved to the SD card? My company is about to release an Android app and some people in beta are complaining that we do not allow them to move it to the SD card.
I realize there are ways around this (link2sd, etc), but I don't think this is the answer I'm looking for in this situation. I have tried searching both XDA and Google and can't seem to find an explanation of what is exactly is going on that causes widgets to break.
Thanks for any help.
It's just the way it works. The short answer is that Android won't even show a widget in the list if the app has been moved to the SD.
There are a few reasons for that. For one, the home screen shows up on boot before applications that are on the SD have fully initialized. Some will be there, but some continue to load as the home screen comes up, I guess to make the phone feel like it's booting faster. Each app on the SD card is in an encrypted container that needs to be decrypted and mounted. Another factor is that the app disappears if the SD card is unmounted (either physically or by mounting it as USB storage).
Basically they would have needed to write a hook into the home screen app to handle re-initializing widgets as they become available again. They either just didn't do that, or they might have decided widgets are something that should always show up and not be subject to the state of the SD card.
It's not an ideal situation. On the one hand, there are some apps that have widgets that some users may not plan to use. In that case, I'd want the ability to move it as a user. You can certainly allow them to do that, but then the widget just disappears from the option list when they move it. It doesn't provide any warning saying "only do this if you don't plan to use the widget." So it's a catch-22 for developers. If they disable moving to SD, users who don't want to use the widget will be irritated. If the enable it, users who don't understand the ramifications will be confused and irritated. There's no ideal solution at this point.

[Q] Security

I'm interested in hearing about the security that other Android users employ on their devices. I don't ever have anything particularly sensitive on my device, but certainly data and images that I wouldn't want other people to have access to should my device be lost or stolen.
Obviously the first starting point is a lock screen code which I already have in place. I use a four digit pin code, and realise from playing around with it that after five incorrect attempts the device will make you wait 30 seconds before trying again. Is this the only restriction, or does the time get longer, or trigger something else after more attempts?
Secondly, I have a number of photographs stored on the SD card. Thinking about it this is a big security issue as someone could simply take it out of the phone and plug it straight into a laptop and go through the data.
The next issue is the encryption of the phone itself. I know that there is an encryption option built in, but I'm of the understanding that the password has to be the same as the lockscreen code. Which seems far from ideal as a 4 digit pin for the lockscreen code is convenient, but probably not strong enough if you're encryping data.
Finally, the option of a remote wipe. I've used a variety of apps in the past, but haven't installed any since installing my latest ROM. What do people use?
I'm interested to hear any input about what people use on the device, or what ways I could increase the security of my device.
Anyone getting hold of your phone can easily get to your data unless you encrypt them.
The best bet I think would be to install the EDS app or the Cryptonite app (both available on the Play). The latter has the capability to open and mount a Truecrypt container.
(I think you have to create the container first on a PC, but since I don't use Cryptonite, I can't be sure of it).
For remotely wiping your phone, I heard Avast! Antivirus app has the best reviews; and it's free.

Why do you favour EDS/Cryptonite over the built in Android encryption method. They seem to offer more flexibility to me. Will they encrypt the whole phone, or just a new, special folder? Like an encrypted zip file in a way.
I've installed Avast and am in the process of setting it all up.

I prefer not all of my SD Card to be encrypted, since encryption is taxing to the CPU. Truecrypt containers will be mounted as a folder, so it's what I wanted: a space to store files which will be encrypted, without needing to encrypt the whole phone.
TrueCrypt also needs to be manually mounted; Android encfs gets automatically mounted on boot.
Plus, TrueCrypt containers have been known to stump even three-letter organizations.

Thanks for sharing you knowledge with me.
I'm going to give the TrueCrypt approach a go. I'll probably set up a small area on the SD card first with some documents and photos and see how that works out.
There are other areas though that I wouldn't want a thief to have access to, such as my messages or perhaps my recent photos? I assume these can't be stored in the TrueCrypt container, but would be protected by encrypting the whole phone with Android's method.

A5 2017 - Issue when SIM and SD card removed - Your device was reset

Hello,
As the title says, I have an issue with A5 2017 that has Android 8? and current software is A520FXXUGCTKA.
Girlfriend used it before the new phone she got, transferred most of the data, SIM and SD card but A5 suddenly went into some kind of lock.
"Your device was reset recently and it needs PIN to be unlocked. You can't use fingerprint until you unlock it with PIN" - something along those lines.
Is it possible to unlock or flash some recovery to bypass that lock? She already tried a ton of different pins and still can't unlock it - only makes the timer go up.
The phone is not stolen or anything like that. My girlfriend genuinely needs leftover data from there to transfer to new phone.
Hope I am not breaking any rules and if you have any more questions or need more info, feel free to ask me.
Someone may have a better Plan.
The data may be lost if not.
Meh... always redundantly backup critical data to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.

Your backup plan is easier said then done when a person is not that knowledgeable in tech realm.
She didn't care about backups but she always kept pictures and small amounts of data on a laptop.
Anyway, would you recommend any of the "unlocker apps" you linked?

I was completely computer illiterate in 2004.
Completely Android stupid in 2014. You identify what you need to do and go from there. If you play with what you need to learn, you will learn it.
One needs to learn about hardware as well to make good choices.
There are no shortcuts, it takes time.
One of the first priorities should be data backup. That's one of the main reasons to use a computer, to catalog and store data.
There are only two types of computer users, ones that have lost data, and those that will.
Being of the former group I can safely say that you can never have too many backup hdds and drives.
As for unlocker apps, no clue. I have done everything I can to avoid that unpleasant situation.

You are completely lost in helping people aren't you?
The point and main question of the post was "(if possible) how to recover data or remove pin lock from [model] phone".
If you wish to reply, please keep on the subject and main question as I am not interested in how YOU got literate in computers.

Really? I think the data is already lost.
The reason you're in this situation is because you choose to be. Actions or lack of, have consequences.
Most things can't be fixed after they're broke.
Was trying to show you how not to become the definition of insane. Past vs future.
Sound familiar?
