Copy your favorite ROM zip file to the root of the SD card; reboot your phone into recovery - either by holding VOL DOWN and selecting recovery from the HBOOT menu, or using the "adb reboot recovery" command. Once you are in recovery, select "Flash zip from SD card" option (this may vary depending on which recovery image you are using) and scroll to the zip file. Power button is used as ENTER. Good luck.

Sweet! Thanks guys! I will do this and let you know how it goes. I will be using Fresh Evo 3.4.0.1. Btw, do I need to backup anything else besides contacts which are already in my gmail account? I don't mind losing my apps because I can just reinstall the ones I actually use.

I would recommend doing a Nand backup first in Recovery.
Then after your Nand backup is done, you'll want to wipe Data/Factory Reset, Cache and Dalvik-Cache in Recovery as well then you can proceed to 'Flash ZIP from SD card'.
I never backup anything other than what my gmail saves.
EDIT: Also, your Radio and PRI are out of date. I would recommend only flashing the new Radio/PRI with Amon Ra recovery. Be very careful when flashing this. This is one true way to brick your phone(small chance but still).
I think you are supposed to flash the new Fresh 3.4.0.1 when it is done reboot the phone. Go through the whole setup process with gmail then reboot back into Recovery and flash the Radio/PRI. You might want to wait for confirmation before flashing the Radio/PRI from someone else.
Here is the link for the new ones -- http://geekfor.me/evo/radio/baseband-215000901/ (There is also a guide on there too)
EDIT2: If you don't have any problems with your phone then you can skip it if you want and wait for the next ones to come.

Okay, just to make sure, so that I dont mess this up:
Nand Backup in Recovery
wipe Data/Factory Reset
Cache and Dalvik-Cache in Recovery
Flash ZIP from SD card
I think I'll wait on flashing the radio and PRI since that part seems kind of risky for a newbie like me right now.
Thanks!

Just to confirm as well when wiping the data/factory reset...that is in Recovery...as well as Cache and Dalvik.
The two separate lines kind of threw me off, I just want to make sure you didn't think from within the phone to wipe data/factory reset.
Yeah, if you don't seem to have a problem with anything, I would hold off on flashing the Radio/PRI.
EDIT: So, pretty much...
*Do Nand backup
*Wipe data/factory, cache and dalvik-cache in Recovery
*Flash ZIP from SD card*
*Get everything setup and then make a Nand backup of Fresh 3.4.0.1
*Enjoy
Oops, yeah you meant in Recovery mode for the 2nd item right?
Unfortunately I cannot get my phone into recovery mode no matter what I do (ROM Manager or reboot with volume up + power.). My phone just sits there on the white EVO screen.
I'm thinking that the update messed up my root somehow. I can still use Wifitether just fine. I just had to find a different version. Maybe I should try the Unrevoked method again?
Okay, I got it to work. All I did was run UnRevoked again and I was able to get into recovery mode again and do what I needed to do.
Thanks eveyone!

I used toastcfh's method to get full root and nand unlock. Can someone point to me to pretty stupified tutorial that will get me from where I am to where I want to go?
I've spent a couple hours scouring the forums and trying a couple different methods, but have failed miserably.
I appreciate your help!
Since you've gone through the toastfch tutorial already I assume you will know how to do the following already:
1. Boot into recovery
2. Do a nandroid backup
3. Wipe data, cache and dalvik (wiping data may not be necessary but I always do it to be safe*)
4. flash the new rom.zip file
5. Reboot
If you want to save your settings, ect I suggest doing a titanium backup before doing any of this because *YOU WILL LOSE ALL SETTINGS AND DATA (apps, ect).
you would think so, but I don't know how to flash the rom. :S
when I select "apply sdcard:update.zip" after wiping the cache and data, I get this:
"-- Install from sdcard...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted."
I copied netarchy's rom to the sdcard (with the 2 radios) and renamed it to update.zip.
Don't rename the new rom to update.zip. Leave it as the default name and flash it.

Doesn't seem to make a difference. I tried it originally with the full filename, then tried the update.zip, and now I renamed it and tried it again with the full name, but still getting the same message.
Do I need to change my recovery version? If so, how?
What recovery are you using? If you don't know, is the font blue or yellow (maybe orange - can't remember)?
Download netarchy's rom again, you shouldn't be failing the signature. And don't rename it this time. And delete any update.zip you have on the sd card.
The menu text is blue on the recovery menu.

Done. Same error.
You have clockworkmod recovery. Install amon ra recovery and try to flash your rom.
If you don't know how to install amon ra, the easiest way would be to download rom manager from the market and there should be an option to flash amon ra from the inside the app.

Cheers, mate. Will post back with results. I'm sure I screwed things up pretty good now, though. I just did the Simpleroot OTA 1.47... lol
Ok, so I still have SU, but ROM Manager keeps giving me "An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands!"
Arghh....
update: unrevoked fixed permissions.
installed ra amon, but recovery text is still blue.
Alright the easy way might not work for you. search for a guide that will get amon ra installed for you. I think that should solve your problems once you have it installed.

Got it all sorted now.
Turned out my nand unlock wasn't successful. Went back through toastcfh's past 2 and that sorted me out.
In the processing of flashing Fresh 3.1.0.1.
Will post back with the results tomorrow.
Everything looks good. Got Fresh 3.1.0.1 up and running.
Only problem is that Titanium isn't recognizing my backup files, so now I've got to figure that out.
I appreciate your help!
You did Simpleroot which is the first step in rooting..... reverting your software to a earlier method....if you go into the boodloader screen, your hboot version should say .0.76.xxx...then you need to to toast's method part 2 to obtain full root and gain super user permission, also when you do Toast part 2..it will upgrade you to the 1.47. But in the end I guess if unrevoked is working ok for you and you can flash roms...go for it. And last, you will find you may need to switch recoveries between RA and Clockworkmod...because some roms perfer one or the other.
I just want to know if im doing this right.
I started with 3.29.651.5 and rooted with 1 click unRevoked Method.
I have 2 files Fresh Evo 3.3.0.1 and The latest Radio/PRI combo thing.
1.Go into recovery, apply zip from SD and choose the Rom.
2.reboot and go through the setup process.
3.reboot in recovery, apply zip from SD and choose the Radio/PRI zip.
4.Wait for it to finish and reboot and hope it doesnt brick .
Is that all i have to do? I am using Clockwork Recovery BTW.

Yeah everything looks good but do a nand backup first before you do anything! You can do that in the recovery. And then wipe cache and restore factory default, or something like that. Then flash your rom. I did it a couple of days ago and LOVE it!
Do i need to flash the Radio/PRI if it says i have the latest one? All i did so far was flash the rom
Nope, you're good to go.
I've had this phone for a about a month, and decided to get adventurous - should have left it alone.
I ran unrevoked the day I got the phone and decided to try cyanogem - it didn't work, got stuck on splash screen so I recovered my stock backup. I read in the developers forums about needing flash a new bootloader and use amon-ra instead of clockwork to load cyanogem.... I got the PC36IMG from the forum here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764062&page=2
I've been stuck in boot loop since then.
I have followed all of the suggestions for those stuck in bootloop in the thread, (including both versions of the PC36IMG and no luck...
I went as far as running unrevoked forever again, in the hopes that it would put it back to the way it was before I flashed the file from the post.
I can get into recovery, and the hboot version is 2.02
none of my backups will install ( error 7), and the cyanogem 7 nightly will not load.
I am 350 miles away from home for the next two weeks and can't call home
to recap
1) unrevoked forever - ok
2) tried to flash cyanogem7 - got stuck in bootloop
3) flashed clockwork - ok
4) recovered backup - ok
5) flashed PC36IMG from above thread - stuck in bootloop wont load rom
6) flashed alternative PC36IMG from above thread - stuck in bootloop wont load rom
7) flashed clockwork again - ok
8) tried to restore backup - error 7
9) flashed mtd-eng.zip (from xda) - hboot .76 - hboot version on phone did not change
10) flashed mtd-eng.zip (from xda) - hboot .76.200 - hboot version on phone did not change
11) unrevoked forever - completed but still stuck in bootloop/recovery
10)
7) flashed clockwork again - ok
I really don't know where to go from here, and everything I try from the xda forums doesnt work. Any help with this will be deeply appreciated..

It is always a good idea to backup your rom, and espciallu your wimax. And using the format all won't kill your 4G keys.
wimaxx?
Again noob here... srry...
I assume backing up my roms would just be copying them from the sd card, but the wimax is something I haven't run across yet. How do you back that up?

Well you backup the rom that way, but when someone says "backup your rom" they mean you boot into recovery and select back, and it backups your system image, and you can restore it if something goes wrong.
clockwork recovery- selct backup/restore, select backup, and you're done
amon_ra- select backup/restore, select which items you want
Wimax is the official name for 4G, so if you hear wimax, they mean 4G. Clockwork backs up wimax automatically, and it can be extracted from the zip and copied if on a computer. On amon_ra 2.3 you have to physically select wimax and back it up, otherwise it can be lost.
I think I got it
so ... move calkulins to sd card
install from zip
flash backup

Format all only touches the system data, like the cache, ect. But its always handy to backup the contents every so often. And sound good, I'll be around.
didn't work
error while flashing boot image
I also tried to install CM7, that didn't go either - status 7
Awkward. let me see if I find it. But you can just click:
format data, wipe cache, and under advanced [if on clockwork] wipe dalvik, and it does the same thing. I've never used the format all zip and been just fine.
I am using clockwork, will try dalvic method

Well apparently it doesn't like the file. What exactly are you trying to do now, flasha new rom?
just get A rom to work..
the phone won't boot, I can only get it into recovery.
I started out trying to get CM7, but now I just want it to work. lol
Well try flashing the latest CM7 nightly. And to use that [CM7] you are on the 3.0+ version of clockwork?

I'm wanting to upgrade to gingerbread, and also stay stock with sense. I found the following thread with a gingerbread rooted rom and the radios:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379
Is this as simple as placing the Odexed/De-Odexed zip in the root folder, going into recovery, and selecting "flash zip from sdcard"?
Of course I'd do a nandroid backup prior and then wipe data/cache/dalvik. (Would I need to wipe data in my case?)
I'd also like to upgrade the radios too. The rooted gingerbread thread states that must be flashed through hBoot/Fastboot, and not recovery. In this case do I just place the radio zip on the root directory, then go into fastboot->bootloader, and have the phone flash that way?
It's seems pretty simple, that's why I'm questioning it. Thanks for any help!
It is that simple. In your instance going from a stock sense ROM to another stock ROM, you won't need to wipe, sort of,
you need to flash the same type of ROM you are running (odexed or de-odexed) if you are not going to wipe.
After you flash your new ROM, place the update PC36IMG on the SD card and then load into recovery, it will see the file and ask if you want to update. That's it, just take the PC36IMG off the SD card (or rename it) after it installs.

Thanks for the reply! I'm guessing the rom I loaded was odexed (it doesnt state in that thread). So I could load the de-odexed version, I'd just have to wipe data/cache/dalvik.
So I was able to flash the rooted gingerbread rom. I was going to then flash the radio, but can no longer enter the bootloader by holding volume down + power. Any ideas? Am I in fastboot mode?

I have gingerbread on my evo 4g....
I'm in the process of trying to root my EVO solely to gain WIFI tethering access for my new TV.
I've read tutorials about rooting here and there over the past year but never felt like i quite got it, so i didn't do it. Well I decided to try it out with this guide:
it won't let me post the url, but it's the one on goodandevo for gingerbread
Everything went well with this process up until the Nandroid backup. I backed up I guess my current stock ROM?(although I don't know where to find it??) I then downloaded the "Wireless-N bug fix" rom and stuck it on my SD card. I then flashed it through my boot screen, then selected the zip......
and here is where i'm at:
1. booted into my phone, it looks completely unchanged(stock rom). HOWEVER, wifi antenna quit working.
2. i went into the boot screen and "s-off" shows so something worked?
3. when i try to install the wifi tethering, it says i'm not rooted.
OBVIOUSLY i'm doing something wrong. the article mentions Amon Ra Recovery as well as PC36IMG.zip and being the noob that i am as it relates to rooting, these mean nothing to me. any help is appreciated.
If you boot into recovery from the bootloader, do you see clockwork or a triangle and red ! ? If you see the latter, you have no recovery, and the amon_ra recovery can be found in the the development section [type it in the search], where you will get the PC36IMG and instructions on how to flash it. Then you can flash the zip in recovery. Also, if you download wireless tether from the market [free] you'll be set to tether.
i went into my bootloader and then recovery. the screen went to the "white HTC EVO" screen, then it loaded into a REVOLUTIONARY screen with this menu
-reboot system now
-apply update from sd card
-wipe data/factory reset
etc.
so you're saying a need the amon-RA and the pc36img.zip? will this fix the wifi antenna problem too? thx again for your help.

I believe the revolutionary is a form a clockwork and you CAN flash your wifi zip now, but you may get an error about amend scripting, ect. And amon_ra will be in the PC36IMG that you flash in the bootloader. From there, you will flash your zip, and you should be good.
i have now flashed 4.24.651.1-802.11n-fix-signed.zip twice from my REVOLUTIONARY recovery screen and it says it loaded successfully, but still won't load apps requiring root, AND wifi is still broken =(

The first part sounds like you don't have superuser installed, or the binaries didn't flash; it happened while I rooted a friend's thunderbolt.
1. download and install superuser from the market
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828 < download and flash the second zip in recovery [the froyo/eclair]
3. go into the superuser app, tap settings, then hit update, and it should be working
And the wifi broke after you flashed the zip?
ok. i flashed the pc36img.zip file and updated. also then reflashed the 4.24.651.1-802.11n-fix-signed.zip and WIFI radio still isn't working??

I would recommend restoring your original backup, because it seems that the zip file broke your wifi, that's when it stopped working correct? Or try flashing a new stock rooted rom of that same firmware and try it again, because I'm sure the wifi driver was under attack.

ok tech roxxx. thx. can i restore to my original rom after being rooted? i've never restored, how is that done? i went into bootloader and then recovery, then restore and chose nandroid restore. it said it couldn't find the file?
stuff is confusing sometimes.
also, now that i placed the pc36img.zip on sd root file, everytime i go into bootloader it ask's if i want to update. is it okay to move that file? delete it? what's the way of handing it, and any other zip files for that matter in the root sd?

Sorry, I had to run out. That would be he correct method to restore. Though to handle the PC36IMG, you can delete it, or rename it to somethign else like PC36IMG_amon, so you know what it is for future use, if you ever had to flash the recovery again.
still no wifi? i tried restoring but it said it couldn't find the file?
tried flashing a new radio, but it still won't start up the wifi?
You should have a folder on your sdcard for backup... Not sure what revolutionary calls it... But it has to be there unless you moved it or anything. The recovery looks for an exact folder with exact file names so if anything changed it won't work.
On the wireless n fix, you shouldn't have flashed that as I believe wireless n is already a part of gingerbread... May be wrong but I never had to flash it. All you will need is wifi tether app from market.
At this point you may have to do a full wipe and flash a new ROM, granted you will lose all your data. However you can flash the new Sprint update, which I am on now and it is quite smooth.
Be sure your contacts are backed up to Google. If you have apps you want backed up get Titanium backup. Emails and texts will be gone, though i'm sure there is a way i've never really cared.

You will still have a mostly stock Evo but it's rooted with superuser already installed. Then get wireless tether app from the market.

thank you i'm her old man. i'm going to try what you've said now. i'll post back with results. as for my back up? i'm not sure where it went, and as long as it doesn't mess my phone up, i'm going to clean up my sd card a tad too. i don't think it will harm anything. never should have flashed that rom, goodandevo made it sound benign.
thanks again tho.
**UPDATE**
i downloaded titanium backup and i get an error that "superuser" has forced closed. something is a miss? i'm more than frustrated. i'm really not concerned with email's/contacts since they're all cloud based. what's the easiest way to get a clean root like what you have?? at this point i'd probably drive over my phone if someone said that's what it took....=/
in recovery it says:
wipe ALL usuerdata/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik-cache
wipe SDCARD (don't wipe this i right)
wipe boot
wipe system
wipe SDCARD (don't wipe this)
wipe SDEXT
wipe DATA: batttery
wipe DATA: rotate settings
i'm afraid to wipe "boot" and "system" those sound important. but i'm just doing what you've mentioned.

Yea you need those to boot into the system. Did you flash the rooted stock rom he linked you to, as that would be a quick fix.
Do wipe those they will be replaced when you flash the new ROM

i wiped them and it bricked my phone. luckily the manager at sprint was uber nice and gave me a replacement since i'd been a longtime customer.
i guess i have no business rooting my phone if i don't understand the process. i figured i'd root it now since evo 4g probably won't be getting anymore MAJOR android updates? but....maybe i should leave this one be.
are there any close to fail safe guides for "rooting for dummies?"
Revolutionary error message
Hello, I am new to the this forum. I did as the best I could to find a relevant forum to post this.
When I run revolutionary to root my HTC Evo 4G I get an error message that reads.
"Failed to communicate with existing ADB (Android Debugging Bridge) service"
I have the lastest SDK and everything downloaded.
Can anyone explain why this keeps happening? (Note: I am running this through vitualbox for windows 7 because my current OS is the windows 8 Developer preview and doesn't install the HTC drivers.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time

Happened to me. Had to go run revolutionary manually.
