I've had this phone for a about a month, and decided to get adventurous - should have left it alone.
I ran unrevoked the day I got the phone and decided to try cyanogem - it didn't work, got stuck on splash screen so I recovered my stock backup. I read in the developers forums about needing flash a new bootloader and use amon-ra instead of clockwork to load cyanogem.... I got the PC36IMG from the forum here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764062&page=2
I've been stuck in boot loop since then.
I have followed all of the suggestions for those stuck in bootloop in the thread, (including both versions of the PC36IMG and no luck...
I went as far as running unrevoked forever again, in the hopes that it would put it back to the way it was before I flashed the file from the post.
I can get into recovery, and the hboot version is 2.02
none of my backups will install ( error 7), and the cyanogem 7 nightly will not load.
I am 350 miles away from home for the next two weeks and can't call home
to recap
1) unrevoked forever - ok
2) tried to flash cyanogem7 - got stuck in bootloop
3) flashed clockwork - ok
4) recovered backup - ok
5) flashed PC36IMG from above thread - stuck in bootloop wont load rom
6) flashed alternative PC36IMG from above thread - stuck in bootloop wont load rom
7) flashed clockwork again - ok
8) tried to restore backup - error 7
9) flashed mtd-eng.zip (from xda) - hboot .76 - hboot version on phone did not change
10) flashed mtd-eng.zip (from xda) - hboot .76.200 - hboot version on phone did not change
11) unrevoked forever - completed but still stuck in bootloop/recovery
10)
7) flashed clockwork again - ok
I really don't know where to go from here, and everything I try from the xda forums doesnt work. Any help with this will be deeply appreciated..
Start fresh ,get calkulins wipe all and then flash it and then flash a rom and start from there

It is always a good idea to backup your rom, and espciallu your wimax. And using the format all won't kill your 4G keys.
wimaxx?
Again noob here... srry...
I assume backing up my roms would just be copying them from the sd card, but the wimax is something I haven't run across yet. How do you back that up?

Well you backup the rom that way, but when someone says "backup your rom" they mean you boot into recovery and select back, and it backups your system image, and you can restore it if something goes wrong.
clockwork recovery- selct backup/restore, select backup, and you're done
amon_ra- select backup/restore, select which items you want
Wimax is the official name for 4G, so if you hear wimax, they mean 4G. Clockwork backs up wimax automatically, and it can be extracted from the zip and copied if on a computer. On amon_ra 2.3 you have to physically select wimax and back it up, otherwise it can be lost.
I think I got it
so ... move calkulins to sd card
install from zip
flash backup

Format all only touches the system data, like the cache, ect. But its always handy to backup the contents every so often. And sound good, I'll be around.
didn't work
error while flashing boot image
I also tried to install CM7, that didn't go either - status 7
Awkward. let me see if I find it. But you can just click:
format data, wipe cache, and under advanced [if on clockwork] wipe dalvik, and it does the same thing. I've never used the format all zip and been just fine.
I am using clockwork, will try dalvic method

Alright, so wipe data/factory restore, wipe cache, and then under advanced, wipe dalvik cache, and you'll be all set.
I'm sorry, but still sys error while flashing boot image....
I have 3 recoveries saved... will try the other two, as well as CM7
Well apparently it doesn't like the file. What exactly are you trying to do now, flasha new rom?
just get A rom to work..
the phone won't boot, I can only get it into recovery.
I started out trying to get CM7, but now I just want it to work. lol
Well try flashing the latest CM7 nightly. And to use that [CM7] you are on the 3.0+ version of clockwork?

Hi all. I am a noob at this rooting and flashing business, and I probably did something stupid so bear with me.
The other night I rooted my Evo with Unrevoked. That same night I flashed Baked Snack 1.9 using ROM Manager. Prior to the flash, I backed up my phone using ROM Manager. It was fast and everything but I decided I wanted Gingerbread (a la Salvagemod). I backed up my phone in a similar fashion, and flashed the ROM once using ROM Manager. When rebooting, my phone became caught in a boot loop. After searching through Google for a few minutes, I learned that I simply needed to clear my cache and my dalvik cache. After clearing cache, flashing, and attempting to boot several times (all in clockworkmod... or recovery... or whatever it is called (yeah i suck)...or whichever one is orange!), I gave up and decided to restore to my second ROM Manager backup - that of Baked Snack. Error! "No files found!" I tried my previous backup. Same message.
Looking back on that, I chose "install zip from sdcard" instead of "nandroid". That was a fail.
So I decided to re-use unrevoked. Everything went fine on the PC end, but the only thing that changed on my phone, is that when it boots, it gets stuck on "htc evo" in the white screen. That and clockworkmod is now teal. I disovered the nandroid option on the recovery menu. I navigate to that, then to restore, then to my Baked Snack backup. This gave me the message "Error while flashing boot image". I tried it one more time, except instead of picking recover, I accidentally picked backup (stupid stupid careless, i know). It failed and said "Can't mount /data/!".
Then I decided to go onto xda-developers and here I am now. If you are through facepalming, I would appreciate it if anybody could help me recover my data. I believe I can still flash a completely new ROM (But what do I know? I haven't proven to be the smartest Android guy), and I don't know about you guys, but I like keeping my data.
So, uh, yeah. That's that. Help please.
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your phone. It looks like you still have a nandroid backup, unless you formated your SDcard. Clear data, dalvik cache, and cache then run do a restore. When using clockworks recovery clear out the data, dalvik, and cache three times.
Hope this helps.
I have performed all three wipes. After that it reads
Code:
Checking MD5 sums...
Erasing boot before restore...
Restoring boot image...
Error while flashing boot image!
Same as before... Any thoughts? Could the boot.img file be corrupted?
***bump***
Edit: Ive read around some more and heard 2 things. 1) If I just try recovering over and over again, nandroid will eventually give in. 2) the battery has to be 70% or higher or nandroid will just keep giving error messages.
Either way, I'll juice up my battery and report back later.
Have you tried to just do a wipe and reflash the ROM.
Have you tried to use Amon recovery? That seems to work better than clockworks. You can get that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026

Yes. I tried it again just now because I was feeling lucky. Salvage Mod went smoothly, except it got stuck on the white htc screen when I rebooted. Baked Snack gave me an error message:

I'll try that tomorrow morning. Right now I'm gonna get some sleep before I do any more damage to my phone lol. Expect more questions from me about WiMAX and what to do with that .img file (if anything at all).

It says S-OFF, so that's good news.
And as to Amon_RA, because I'm doing "the bootloader way", then I don't need the recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img file?
When I try to recover, it givese me an error saying that the nandroid directory could not be found. I have my backups in a folder called /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/NameOfTheRecoveryFolder/. Should I just copy the files in the backup folder to a folder on the root of the card called "nandroid"?

Yep...just need the PC36IMG.zip and boot to the bootloader.
Since you got your phone last December I think you need to run a rom that is based off the latest code. If you are running htc sense it should be based off 3.70.651.1. For ASOP run the lastest ones.
Here is a nice wiki of the ROMs for the EVO http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs
Forgot to mention for the zip files you place on your sdcard for flashing check the MD5 hash before flashing your phone.
When I got my EVO the SD card went bad in about 2 months. Fortunately for me Sprint was nice enough to replace my sdcard. Since, then I have upgraded my sdcard to a 32GB sandisk.

This would be the file called "nandroid.md5"? I'm confused.
OK so I boot into recovery, go to Nandroid restore > BackupName
I am presented with a list of options:
boot.img
recovery.img
wimax.HT0CRHL08393.img
system.img
data.img
cache.img
nandroid.md5
Do I just run each of these individually or am I doin it wrong?
Don't do a nandroid restore. Flash a ROM onto your phone.Fresh EVO or Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo are good ones to try.
Works great! I lost all my data but I'd rather have a wiped phone than a dead one!
Thanks!
When you used Unrevoked to root your phone it also downloaded Clockwork Mod recovery v. 2.6.0.1. This is what you probably used to do your original backup right after you rooted your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895208). You need to go back to this version so you can restore any backups you may have made right after you rooted your phone. Here is an article by Koush explaining why you may be having problems. At the bottom he has v.2.6.0.1. Install it on your phone and then proceed restoring your backup.
Also, I'm going to suggest to you that you read the articles below to get you familiar with rooting, and then I suggest you read some more on these and other forums. Learn the rooting vocabulary and processes involved (rooting, nandroid backup, recoveries, flashing ROMs, kernels, etc.). Also, try and read up on problems people have rooting, flashing ROMs, and troubleshooting should something go wrong. You want to be able to get yourself out of a mess should problems arise. Most importantly, you want to know what you're doing so you don't brick your phone.

So my phone now will only reboot up to the HTC Incredible white screen. I'm not even sure what the issue is, all i did last before it got stuck was erase data on an old sd card i had in the phone. Then I just did a reboot and it froze on the white screen.
I'm running GB evervolv 2.3.2 with 2.6.37.4 incredikernel.
I can get into HBOOT but when i click on recovery it takes me into fastboot everytime.
What can i do to fix this????
Sorry please move this thread to the Q&A section, i thought that's where I was posting it, my bad.
Go to the Clockwork Recovery thread and download the update for a different version and try getting that to flash via bootloader. That way you can at least get into recovery if you need to flash new. Just to clear it up, did you use your phone to delete stuff off the old card, by using Astro or ES file explorer? I know ES file explorer has root access so is there a chance you could've deleted a system file on accident? All it takes is a click of the SD card icon and you're in root instead of SDcard. Also this is probably a thread more for the Q&A subforum, just an fyi
i deleted an old sd card that i don't even use for my phone, i was just putting it in there to clear out whatever was left on it. so i could use it new.
And it still bootloops even when you put your normal SD card back in?
yup, i dunno what it's deal is.
I remember an older version of cm7 on the nook color warned against formating sd cards because it accidentaly formats the boot partition, this may be a bug that exists in the rom your using.
at least you can get into hboot, you should be able to download ruu image and flash it in hboot. this would get you back to stock, then root and install clockwork, and then restore your latest nandroid.
Flash this recovery in hboot
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/recovery/clockworkmod/PB31IMG.ZIP
It should at least give you a working recovery.
i have to rename things as update.zip in order for hboot to flash them right??

NO leave it PB31IMG.ZIP.
hboot can only see that name. if you rename it hboot will not see it at all.
also make sure your card is formatted as FAT32
got it into recovery so i'm just wiping and restoring, thanks for the help!
ok now i'm getting a bootloop on the cm7 boot screen...i just went to flash that new instead of my nandroid because the nandroid was from an older rom.
Did you wipe everything? Davik, Cache, Data, etc?
wiped data and cache...didn't do davik because i've never had to in the past. but i'll give it a try.
would i need to update CMW from version 2.0+ to 3 in order for cm7 to work? because it's still bootlooping
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO ME!
i was on MIUI 1.3.25 (the newest GB release) and i was formatting an sd card and when i restarted my phone i got stuck at the splash screen! i have been able to boot back into cwm recovery but even when i wipe and flash, nothing works.
i booted into recovery and tried to restart from there - failed
i reflashed 3.18 (wiped cache/dalvik) - failed
i wiped all data and reflashed 3.18 - failed
wiped all, flashed 3.25, fixed permissions - stuck at splash screen again
restored an old MIUI (v1.1.15) - stuck at splash screen
pleaseee let me know if you figure this out

This tends to be things go as far as ROMs partitioning my sd, always back it up externally and format/partition before transferring stuck back over to it while in phone.
Some background:
-This is my 4th Evo. Previous 3 were all rooted.
-Rec'd the new Evo last Thursday, rooted it immediately using the Auto Root method.
-Everything was successful, and Sprint Lover's ROM was automatically flashed on my phone, until I tried flashing a new rom.
Roms I tried flashing:
-MIUI
-BOS "Royal Liquid"
What happens:
-With MIUI, it flashes, restarts and then boots up all the way and then freezes after 20 secs and restarts, EVERY TIME.
-With BOS, stuck in bootloop. Keeps restarting at the white "htc EVO 4g" screen.
Tried both recoveries, Amon_RA AND Clockword Mod(CWM).
Yes, wiped every time. Even d/led "Calkulin's Format ALL" and flashed it (in Amon RA, it wouldn't let me in CWM.)
Please help, and ask me any questions you may need. I'll do my best to provide every answer.

Next time just update your same post or make a thread of your own. No sense of posting your problems in someone's else's problems thread. But I'm glad it's working for you now.
[Update]
Just d/led and flashed CM7 using ClockwordMod. Everything seems to be working fine.
I don't know what's going on anymore.
I am going to try to flash BOS Royal Liquid again and see what happens.
Make sure your device still displays "S-OFF" in the bootloader screen. Reflash amon RA or flash amon RA v2.3 and then go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it except the SD card itself. Now flash the rom you want to flash.

In the bootloader, my info reads:
SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19
Oct 15 2010, 12:07:00
Not sure if any of that means anything.
Also, I tried that, and nothing! =[
-D/led Amon_RA v2.3 from his post. Flashed it using Terminal Emulator.
-Flashed Calkulin's Format ALL
-Wiped everything but "SDCARD" and "SDCard:.android_secure"
-Flashed ROM BOS.. and same thing; bootloop...
One thing I noticed is that when I try to Wipe Dalvik Cache in Amon-RA, it says:
"Formatting DATA: dalvik-cache...
Formatting CACHE: calvik-cache...
Skipping format SDEXT:dalvik-cache...
DALVIK-CACHE: wipe complete!"
That 3rd line kinda has me worried.. I don't think I ever seen that before.
And when I try to Wipe Dalvik-Cache in CWM, it gives me:
"E: unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]"
even BEFORE I select "yes" from the menu.
Once I select "yes".. IMMEDIATELY it says "Dalvik Cache wiped."
I don't remember that either from my previous phones.
ALSO TRIED..
I just Flashed an older version of CWM(v2.5.0.7) that allows to flash Amend zips.
-Then tried wiping, and when I tried wiping "Dalvik-cache" this is what I got:
"E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(File exists)"
Could that be the problem?
[Another update..]
When I try to flash the Royal Liquid ROMS in CWM, it gives me an error saying something like:
"Cannot install because of Android 1.5 or something.
It was necessary to something something Android 3.0 Gingerbread" or something like that.
Does this mean I can only flash Gingerbread ROMS.. which is CM7 is the only one that works?
The error when trying to flash the BOS rom is because of how it is packed. A lot of people still like to packages their ROMs using an older way that I guess google and Kush are wanting to phase out. It should flash ok with clockwork 2.5 or Amon RA's.
With the reboot issue it sounds like something may have gotten corrupted on your phone. If you still have the autoroot folder on your computer try making a backup on just your Data and .android partitions, and then run the FlashZip script that comes with autoroot and use it to flash the PC36IMG_SprintLovers...zip. That one should give you a clean flash that you can work from. It may be a good idea to mount your sd card as a disk drive and scan it for errors too, a corrupt sd card can do all sorts of weird stuff.

What I did:

-Backed up data and .android partitions in recovery
-Restarted phone and ran "FlashZip", chose Option 1 "SPrintLover....zip"
-Flashed it successfully.
-Restarted phone to make sure it works. Went back into recovery and wiped everthing (factory reset, cache, dalvik cache and data), also flashed "Format All"
-Tried flashing BOS and bootloop again.

I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean by "pulling the sd card". Care to elaborate?
Also an update:
While trying to get BOS to work, I was stuck in bootloop.
So I reflashed it again without wiping anything.
It bootlooped 4 times and then PHONE TURNED ON!! Using BOS rom.
However, same as MIUI, about 10 secs into it, the phone freezes and restarts.
What do you think it could be?
MIUI does the same thing, except the whole bootloop trial.

Lol. Wow bro, way to put it like that and make me feel silly.
I thought maybe "pulling the battery" has a different means in terms of rooting.
And yes, I re-flashed BOS and powered the phone off,
-removed SD card
-Restarted and again, stuck in bootloop.
Btw, did you see my update in my previous post?
Also, I thank you VERY much for taking your time to try and help me.
Seems like only Gingerbread based roms (like CM7) are working. I haven't tried any other ones, other than Sprint Lovers and CM7, but they seem to work perfectly fine without ANY problems.
Have you tried:
Pulling the battery, going back to recovery and wiping dalvik and cache again then rebooting (sorry if I missed you doing this)
or
Re-downloading the BOS ROM, could be a bad download, esp if downloaded from your phone
or
Flashing a completely different ROM like Unleashed, Myn, EViO or MikFroyo?
Sorry, didn't mean for it to come across like that. It's possible there is just something about that ron that doesn't want to work with your phone.

Yes. Just tried that brother and doesn't work. (referring to 1&2)
I will try downloading another rom now.
Hopefully BOS and MIUI are just having their own problems, as CM7 works just fine.

Sorry, didn't mean for it to come across like that. It's possible there is just something about that ron that doesn't want to work with your phone.
If you want to send me the logcat I can take a look at it for ya.

Where do I find the logcat? Sorry.. just don't to send you the wrong one.

Option #1
1. Download aLogcat from the market
2. Launch the aLogcat
3. Go launch the program thats crashing, allow it to crash
4. Go back to aLogcat
5. Menu -> Send
6. Email it to yourself, then post it on here for shinzul/toast + thread
Option #2
1. Hook your phone to your computer with the usb cable
2. With your fav CLI type: "adb shell logcat > crashlog.txt" (w/o the " ")
3. On the EVO launch the program that's causing problems, allow it to crash
4. In the CLI hit "crtl+c" (to stop the logging process)
5. In the same folder as adb will be a text file called "crashlog.txt"
6. Post it on here so that shinzul/toast + thread can take a look at it
Option #3
1. open terminal on your phone
2. if the character showing is a '$' type "su"
3. type "locat > /sdcard/logcat.txt"
4. post the logcat.txt file on your SD card on here so that shinzul/toast + thread can take a look at it

Instructions on how get a logcat
I am fully rooted had VR KINGDOM BETA 1 did a nand backup tried to save some space on my phone using Calkulins (Firerat) custom recovery mtd and boot custom mtd follolwed all instructions went to reboot now phone hangs on splash screen. Tried to restore a previous backup of Mikfroyo 4.62 using same procedure it hangs on boot anim...I still have access to recovery amon ra 2.3 on phone but I am lost as to how to get my phone up and running again...was at work all day sick to stomach thinking I have f-d my phone up...PLEASE PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME
What you can do is a clean wipe, then restore the backup, flash the rom over itself, or do a clean wipe, and then flash a new rom. Did you rename the backup?
Here are my thoughts, you probably wiped the ROM when you modified your partitions and you never flashed a new ROM so you have nothing to boot into. Another thought is maybe the nandroid you are restoring has partitions that are too big/small for your new partition sizes and they can't be restored and/or nandroids are not compatible once you modify the partition sizes. I would just try to flash a new ROM image and see if it boots.
Boot into recovery, wipe data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache , and sdext. Then restore your backup of mikfroyo and reboot. Let it sit and be... patient

I would assume that since he's not getting an error when restoring, that he didn't improperly rename it.
OK GUYS first off HUGE THANKS for quick reply !!!! I have done complete wipes, flashed Kingdom backup...nothing... I even had the PC36IMG.zip of Sprint lovers Rom and tried that cuz it has saved my EVO before but when I tried the update it unzipped all but system update ...said "fail uz" on bootloader screen. Is there any way to get that calkulins off my phone. Oh and at one point when I booted into recovery from bootloader it said at bottom E:/ Can't open cache. Only Mik backup is named...Kingdom is named what amon ra put ( date time)...PLEASE HELP ABOUT TO CRY!!!!
Did you try to flash a new ROM via recovery?
When I tried to restore Mik backup it got as far as the boot anim then screen times out. Only Rom I have on my phone to flash is the VR KINGDOM BETA. I am using my gf EVO shift to post guys please be patient with me...just want my EVO back!!!!
Is it possible to download a Rom to gf phone and put on sdcard to flash to my phone or will I lose recovery without MY EVO sdcard...she is not rooted
When I flash a new Rom do I have to do all the steps for the calkulins recovery and boot custom mtd...I would like to just get rid of it. I have used calkulins method in the past with no probs...so why now and why can't I even use the PC36IMG.zip Sprint lovers !!!!! I figured if I still had access to recovery my phone is still savable...??? Is it???
You can flash from her card. Your recovery is not stored on your sd card
If you go to your amon, and choose the usb option, second choice I believe, it will mount your phone to your computer as disk drive and you can transfer a ROM from your computer.
Will download a Rom now and try...will let you know....BIG THANKS!!!
Are you familiar/comfortable with amon_ra? If not, i can give you more detailed instructions... let me know

Yea its not hard, as some users have issues with clockwork. Just be sure to make a backup immediately as your can't restore CWM, and make a wimax backup.
Pretty comfortable with amon been using since Dec.'10 when I got EVO and root. Downloading Mik 4.62 now...wish me luck guys...will let you know.!!!
Ok good, you're welcome and good luck, post any problems... but remember, be patient... if it isn't bootlooping, it means is working! ( Assuming it gets to the bootanimation)

Did I say voodoo...I meant jazz interpretive dance.
I have gingerbread on my evo 4g....
I'm in the process of trying to root my EVO solely to gain WIFI tethering access for my new TV.
I've read tutorials about rooting here and there over the past year but never felt like i quite got it, so i didn't do it. Well I decided to try it out with this guide:
it won't let me post the url, but it's the one on goodandevo for gingerbread
Everything went well with this process up until the Nandroid backup. I backed up I guess my current stock ROM?(although I don't know where to find it??) I then downloaded the "Wireless-N bug fix" rom and stuck it on my SD card. I then flashed it through my boot screen, then selected the zip......
and here is where i'm at:
1. booted into my phone, it looks completely unchanged(stock rom). HOWEVER, wifi antenna quit working.
2. i went into the boot screen and "s-off" shows so something worked?
3. when i try to install the wifi tethering, it says i'm not rooted.
OBVIOUSLY i'm doing something wrong. the article mentions Amon Ra Recovery as well as PC36IMG.zip and being the noob that i am as it relates to rooting, these mean nothing to me. any help is appreciated.
If you boot into recovery from the bootloader, do you see clockwork or a triangle and red ! ? If you see the latter, you have no recovery, and the amon_ra recovery can be found in the the development section [type it in the search], where you will get the PC36IMG and instructions on how to flash it. Then you can flash the zip in recovery. Also, if you download wireless tether from the market [free] you'll be set to tether.
i went into my bootloader and then recovery. the screen went to the "white HTC EVO" screen, then it loaded into a REVOLUTIONARY screen with this menu
-reboot system now
-apply update from sd card
-wipe data/factory reset
etc.
so you're saying a need the amon-RA and the pc36img.zip? will this fix the wifi antenna problem too? thx again for your help.

I believe the revolutionary is a form a clockwork and you CAN flash your wifi zip now, but you may get an error about amend scripting, ect. And amon_ra will be in the PC36IMG that you flash in the bootloader. From there, you will flash your zip, and you should be good.
i have now flashed 4.24.651.1-802.11n-fix-signed.zip twice from my REVOLUTIONARY recovery screen and it says it loaded successfully, but still won't load apps requiring root, AND wifi is still broken =(

The first part sounds like you don't have superuser installed, or the binaries didn't flash; it happened while I rooted a friend's thunderbolt.
1. download and install superuser from the market
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828 < download and flash the second zip in recovery [the froyo/eclair]
3. go into the superuser app, tap settings, then hit update, and it should be working
And the wifi broke after you flashed the zip?
ok. i flashed the pc36img.zip file and updated. also then reflashed the 4.24.651.1-802.11n-fix-signed.zip and WIFI radio still isn't working??
super bummer

I would recommend restoring your original backup, because it seems that the zip file broke your wifi, that's when it stopped working correct? Or try flashing a new stock rooted rom of that same firmware and try it again, because I'm sure the wifi driver was under attack.

ok tech roxxx. thx. can i restore to my original rom after being rooted? i've never restored, how is that done? i went into bootloader and then recovery, then restore and chose nandroid restore. it said it couldn't find the file?
stuff is confusing sometimes.
also, now that i placed the pc36img.zip on sd root file, everytime i go into bootloader it ask's if i want to update. is it okay to move that file? delete it? what's the way of handing it, and any other zip files for that matter in the root sd?

Sorry, I had to run out. That would be he correct method to restore. Though to handle the PC36IMG, you can delete it, or rename it to somethign else like PC36IMG_amon, so you know what it is for future use, if you ever had to flash the recovery again.
still no wifi? i tried restoring but it said it couldn't find the file?
tried flashing a new radio, but it still won't start up the wifi?
You should have a folder on your sdcard for backup... Not sure what revolutionary calls it... But it has to be there unless you moved it or anything. The recovery looks for an exact folder with exact file names so if anything changed it won't work.
On the wireless n fix, you shouldn't have flashed that as I believe wireless n is already a part of gingerbread... May be wrong but I never had to flash it. All you will need is wifi tether app from market.
At this point you may have to do a full wipe and flash a new ROM, granted you will lose all your data. However you can flash the new Sprint update, which I am on now and it is quite smooth.
Be sure your contacts are backed up to Google. If you have apps you want backed up get Titanium backup. Emails and texts will be gone, though i'm sure there is a way i've never really cared.
Grab this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1243320
Wipe everything in recovery except sdcard then flash the .zip you download from that link.
You will still have a mostly stock Evo but it's rooted with superuser already installed. Then get wireless tether app from the market.

thank you i'm her old man. i'm going to try what you've said now. i'll post back with results. as for my back up? i'm not sure where it went, and as long as it doesn't mess my phone up, i'm going to clean up my sd card a tad too. i don't think it will harm anything. never should have flashed that rom, goodandevo made it sound benign.
thanks again tho.
**UPDATE**
i downloaded titanium backup and i get an error that "superuser" has forced closed. something is a miss? i'm more than frustrated. i'm really not concerned with email's/contacts since they're all cloud based. what's the easiest way to get a clean root like what you have?? at this point i'd probably drive over my phone if someone said that's what it took....=/
in recovery it says:
wipe ALL usuerdata/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik-cache
wipe SDCARD (don't wipe this i right)
wipe boot
wipe system
wipe SDCARD (don't wipe this)
wipe SDEXT
wipe DATA: batttery
wipe DATA: rotate settings
i'm afraid to wipe "boot" and "system" those sound important. but i'm just doing what you've mentioned.

Yea you need those to boot into the system. Did you flash the rooted stock rom he linked you to, as that would be a quick fix.
Do wipe those they will be replaced when you flash the new ROM

i wiped them and it bricked my phone. luckily the manager at sprint was uber nice and gave me a replacement since i'd been a longtime customer.
i guess i have no business rooting my phone if i don't understand the process. i figured i'd root it now since evo 4g probably won't be getting anymore MAJOR android updates? but....maybe i should leave this one be.
are there any close to fail safe guides for "rooting for dummies?"
Revolutionary error message
Hello, I am new to the this forum. I did as the best I could to find a relevant forum to post this.
When I run revolutionary to root my HTC Evo 4G I get an error message that reads.
"Failed to communicate with existing ADB (Android Debugging Bridge) service"
I have the lastest SDK and everything downloaded.
Can anyone explain why this keeps happening? (Note: I am running this through vitualbox for windows 7 because my current OS is the windows 8 Developer preview and doesn't install the HTC drivers.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time
