Wether you're on Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread or ICS.
Have you guys noticed how Google Maps on Android tends to "jump" to your current location when you're driving around, whilist iPhone users have a smooth moving gps point indicator? I've noticed out location indicator is smooth when you use "navigation" and it seems to be tied down to signal aside from obviously a gps lock.
I wish there was a modded Google Maps that has our location indicator "fluidly moving" on maps while we're moving like the iphone. Thoughts, comments, post away.

I use Telenav...super smooth. My daughter's iphone uses Telenav as well.

Yes I Noticed that right away when I got my epic.

I have noticed it before, but I haven't noticed it anytime the last dozen or so times I've used it. Maybe I've missed it, or maybe it's actually getting better?
I think noticed on my last Android but I hardly ever use good maps because I have a older Garmin nuvi that works pretty good.

I have even had the same trouble when using navigation. Mostly just recently, and when traveling in new areas. I just figured it was happening because the maps data wasn't cached and there was some delay in retrieving it.
Further, when I switch on 4g while using navigation my whole phone freezes and requires a battery pull to get back on track. Terrible.

Have u tried updating ur prl and rebooting ur phone?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Keep in mind, google maps mostly works off of "network position". So if u don't update ur prl every now and then, ur position locking proximity will and could be off.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I always keep my prl up to date. I switch to 01115 though so I don't think that's the issue. No matter how well your reception is, it seems (so far) that google maps indicator will always be jumpy.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
We'll, google is always working on improving they're products
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
It is because Maps caches the map and has to download the next section and that causes the stop and go of the flow. Telenav seems to have a better cache system and does not display this.

Just an update
I've noticed, that since Beta 1, while having the latest version of Google Apps flashed, it is MUCH smoother on MAPS! that's totally a first for me, I've always seen it jumpy, and smooth only when using Google Navigation! It's these little unimportant things i pay attention to, which I wouldn't even noticed if iPhone's version of Google Maps wasn't so smooth.. Just wanted to keep you guys who cared to post up to date. ;D
Running clean gb and applied the gps fix. Can not get gps to find me. Have let it run for hours. Prechcheed google maps so I could use it and can't get anything. Btw talkatone is great for free international calls
Search google for XDA autononymous gps

Download GPS Test by chartcross. In settings clear AGPS data then download fresh AGPS. Then go to the sat locks screen. It should pop up in a couple of minutes.

Kenny im trying your method first since its alot faster. I have gps status and the WIFI im on wont let me connect to google play. Tried installing from laptop and wont go either. GPS status has can clear agps and get new aswell so will I update the thread
It is known that the Epic must connect to a data signal to get GPS. So since you can't get to Play store I am guessing that is the real issue.

I finally found a good wifi connection and was able to get gps to lock. I then went away from the wifi and it stayed connected with no data. However when I turned gps off and tried to lock again with no data it won't lock. Very annoying. Is there any workaround aside from anynomous?
No. I believe the epic either requires a data or cell connection to enable GPS.

Ok let me clarify how to get gps when u have no service. This has been working for me for 2 days. You can not be in airplane mode. You must have airplane mode turned off and have precached map area on google maps prior. I use gps status to lock then open gmaps then ur good. Thanks all

So your status bar actually says "no signal" that circle with the line through it?

Not sure what tools you have, but here is a thread that may help:

Shut off GPS when your not using it, which is most of the time for me. Most apps ,like weather, can use the network for location based services. Unless your navigation, there's almost no need for GPS.

Will turning off GPS prevent the "NetworkLocationLocator" wakelock?
I would always find that maps had started it self and used battery.
Now I have used Rom Toolbox to stop it from auto starting and it is behaving it self.
Not to hijack the thread, but whenever someone attaches a thumbnail to a thread, all I see is "Attached Thumbnails" and there is image. Anyone know why?
Update
I use PhoneWeaver (totally underrated app!) and for poops and giggles, I added the GPS toggle in all of the profiles except car mode. Before I have always just left the GPS on and figured if nothing needed it, it wouldn't be used.
Now that the GPS is disabled, the maps process never pops in and battery life is once again back to normal.

Anyone been able to get the gps for this app to work on a rooted SGS3? I have it in system apps but notta gps, still enables wifi only. Any help or workarounds? Thanks!
I'm not having any issues with it. Can you rephrase your issue, please? The web interface won't track the phone?
It will track the phone via web, but the gps will not track, all I get is a little split second icon like the gps wants to turn on, but wont, and wifi automatically takes over the phone internet connection. Im trting to get gps to work on this thing and its not.

Mind the fact im on the stock Rom rooted only, no custom recovery.

Does the app have su access? Have you enabled Device Administration within the app?
Delete thread, problem was solved through cerberus support. Was wondering why gps icon was disappearing suddenly. Once the app enables, gps goes to ghost mode.

There are no posts in here about it, so am I the only one with issues? Signal loses lock about every 5 seconds, and bounces me all over the place in Google maps, and Navigon. I'm completely stock. I downloaded a gps app, and it's locking on to 12 or so satellites.

the google maps - it has navigation built in
try to clear data and cache settings
just a "duh" note, make sure GPS is on and not just network location, I'm sure you all have but it never hurts to triple check also check your powersave mode, not sure if they may have an effect on it.
My gps is terrible too. Not sure why... Looking for a solution.

Faster fix and top ntp do the same thing it changes the GPS server from a generic one to one to what part of the world you live in
Then use GPS status/GPS test to update agps. Bam good to go. As long as it's not a hardware problem

(sorry for bad english )my gps having fixing problem also but its irratic ...may time its dosent locate any available settalite and many times its available but cant fix it....and its happens all theway and tried many gps fix softwares.......is it my antinna problem or hardware problem? i dont see any gps hardware problems issue on foums yet....so i am so confused where is the exact problem?

Same here. I also tried bending the "leaf contacts" on the phone so the antenna makes a good connection.
My phone can see 25 satellites but it can't get a GPS lock, any ideas?
I have had serious problems with GPS on custom ROM's (among other issues). They would show the satellites, but it worked like garbage.
I did a full wipe, and ODIN'd to stock, and it's been great ever since then.
Have you tried making a nandroid, and doing a factory reset and full wipe, to see if it works well after? That should allow you to rule out if it's hardware related or software.
