Thanks for your opinion. I didnt mean to post this as a question for say. Just wanted to hear from some of the rom experts if there was anything in this update that is worth updating for. I think that qualifies as for "android development". Its not like i asked "hey when is this coming out?" Or "do i have to reroot if i update to this?, can i even update to this?"...
This is a great community and i usually get great opinions and answers...

I have been building ROM's with the leaked version and so far it is pretty solid and seems to fix atleast the charging speed and the 3G problem.
...
and the radio still isn't moving to 9.01; that 'leaked radio' must be whacked.
I think its worth it, but I do not update till someone makes an official rooted version in a flashable.zip, that way we don't lose root and we are up to date.
rmk40 released a leaked version but I don't think it was the final form of the OTA.

Thanks ID, this was the kind of opinion i was looking for. i unrooted today, pain in the behind to do it too, because i just flashed rom after rom and was never satisfied. Their aren't any problems with the roms, i know a lot of hard work went into them an all... just need to learn how to build so i can just have exactly what i want instead of nagging hard working, not to mention under appreciated devs, for every little detail.
Im never in dire need to be rooted, just like everything to work at all times. Thanks for your opinion and cool roms.

Hi there,
I was just wondering... Are there any noticeable benefits from the official GingerBread release? Or is it too early to tell?
I can see that baadnewz has already released some new versions of his roms (and I'm definitely gonna try them) But I'd like to know is there some improvement to be expected, or is it more like: "Nah! We've already cracked it all before"?
Cheers!
No noticable benefits, as this "Official GB" is nearly same as the old leaked one.
There will be some noticable benefits when HTC will release kernel source code.

Pretty much says it all from my perspective.
I've actually not even installed the update and probably won't, given all the posts i have read today of people unable to revert due to new HBoot etc.
I am more than happy with the Sense2.1+3.0 ROM I have now and was never really concerned with if/when the update would come...
Short answer: No, probably not.

If/when the update comes, I'm sure it'll just be sense 1.0. I seriously doubt HTC or Verizon are interested in giving us extra features on a 1.5 year old device, they'd much rather we upgrade.
Not to mention, the leaked GB update was sense 1.0, which I'm assuming would be a decent indication of what we'll see.
it is possible that we could see 2.1 with elements of 3.0 but it is not likely most likely it will be 1.0.
I would be expecting something a lot like a Z rom personally.

Very unlikely. The Desire guys over in the UK are getting a dumbed down version of sense 1.0. If we even get Gingersense, we'll get 1.0 most likely.

Yeah but the Desire has a lot less storage than the Incredible. That is why they got a "dumbed" down version of sense right? It's still very unlikely though since the Evo didn't get a newer version of sense.

I don't think we'll get gingerbread, but anyways. I don't think it will have sense 2.1 (if we get an update to sense, that's what we'd get) Mainly because they just aren't gonna bother with that. It's a rather old device, and a lot of the people who bought it are now already or coming up for an upgrade. The problem isn't our phone can't handle it. our phone can handle sense 3.0 well. But don't even think about getting that. The sense 2.1 roms are considered the lower sense roms that perform so well, it would actually probably overall perform better. Hell for an example, they put 2.1 on the wildfire s, go look at it's specs and tell me our phone couldn't run it stock. I'm just saying, we won't get it, even though we easily could.

Why would they? Then you have no reason to upgrade your phone. Root you phone and do it yourself, there are plenty of good/stable sense 3.0 GB roms available

as i said in the last thread, we, will not be seeing GB on the dinc any time soon, the phone was EOL'd in march, and if they give us that then we have no official reason to upgrade. Verizon, as a buisiness, does this to get people to buy newer phones, they tried it with the continuum, however that got froyo thanks to inmuts down in legacy playing around with the fascinate kernal.
i am on buisiness gingersense 3.0, not a very big fan of 3.0, but i LOOOVE the 3.0 lockscreen. (i can turn on the phone and get right to making a quick phonecall or snapping a pic if i need too)

It's nice for dev's to work on the official updates rather than leaks/ports, though.
True, although I use the gingersense leak for my roms and it is smooth as butter.
I doubt we see anything more than 1.0, but its not really an issue with all the ports out now. Would be curious to see if a dev can take the update and load 2.1/3.0 items into it though.
Hey guys.
I have a Gnex and I don't have the latest firmware. Its 4.0.2 and my friend has 4.0.3. Strange. Someone told me there is a Samsung updated nexus and a Google updated nexus. I got this phone specifically for the Google experience and knowing I get updates well, as soon as they come out. So what the go Google? Haha.
Anyone know what the go is here?
Thanks.
4.0.2 is the latest OTA firmware. Your friend has a custom ROM if he's got anything higher.
If you're curious, download this simple app: https://market.android.com/details?id=de.cbruegg.officialupdate
This app tells you "where" your OTAs are coming from. It should be noted that Samsung ones will only be a couple weeks behind the Google ones, so it depends how worried about it you are (most people worry too much). Either way you'll always be up to date and won't be left behind for having a non yakju build.
That being said, if you want to go to pure yakju from yakju**, it is extremely easy. There are bundles of guides and videos showing you how to accomplish this. Just read up on it first, please.
Thanks heaps for your reply. = )
Argh ok. But he hasn't touched his phone he said at all, he's pretty android savvy so I'm a little confused. As in no rooting just pure stock nexus rom.
So you can make your phone "Google" if its "Samsung"??
Well that's good news, if you decide to do so. = )
Sorry.... A really noob question but I'm guessing yakju is Google's stock rom? Just haven't heard that before. Haha.
Thanks.

The updates are slightly slightly different. No one has really figured it out but the idea is that there wouldn't be separate regional versions if they were the exact same. Some of the differences are simply different radios.

I used this guide, it will walk you through it. All of the guides are pretty similar. Honestly the biggest hassle is getting working drivers to have the phone properly recognized by the computer. I spent 50min getting drivers to work and 5min actually flashing it.
The basic premise is downloading all of the stock images, recovery, radio, etc. from Google then flashing them all appropriately.
I suggest you read up on this first and decide if its what you want to do before you go with it. Understand your risks and rewards. I'll tell you up front that this process 100% wipes your device (as you'd expect it would).
Hey,

No rooting. Just unlock and flash all of the stock images. If you ever intend to root again then don't relock the bootloader when you're done. Unlocking wipes the device and you won't wanna deal with that again just for deciding to root.
Oh OK. I see.
Thanks for your time and patience man, much appreciated.

It's getting a little sad that there is still no credible rumors on an official update for Verizon Nexus Owners. The 4.04 update to GSM owners may have caused some issues for them and Google jumped on it and fixed in a few weeks. Would love for Verizon/Google to show us a little love too.
Nope I already have 4.0.4, and have a ton of customization options that I wouldn't have with stock.

Nope. I come for the comedy of threads like this.
good day.
Verizon is the holdup, not Google. The only upside is that the firmware for the VZW version will probably not be prone to some of the same problems the GSM version has had due to the extra testing.
It's equally frustrating for VZW Xoom owners. The WiFi-only Xoom got ICS in January. The VZW Xoom is still on Honeycomb. Apparently Google finished the ICS build for it a while ago but Verizon hasn't finished testing because it isn't a priority device for them.

I prefer stock myself because I don't like the "everything AND the kitchen sink" mentality of custom ROMs. I like the "less is more" mentality. Plus, stock ROMs may not have quite the performance of a custom, but stock ROMs generally work better as daily drivers because they're more stable. In addition, kernels are a touchy subject for me as well. I sort-of have trust issues with developers writing kernel tweaks for hardware of which they have no documentation. Only OEMs truly know what a device's hardware is capable of and what its limitations are.
I also keep my stock ROM unrooted because root access doesn't really give me any functionality that I'm interested in. I'd basically root because I can, and that's not really very appealing. *shrug*
Different strokes for different folks.

Yes, I prefer stock myself to, however... one of the main reasons I got the Nexus was for "timely" updates.
4 months is not timely when the rest of the world has an android version newer than my "flagship" device!!! I finally got fed up with Verizon's phone support/approval process so I unlocked/rooted/flashed AOKP and franco kernel.

Cyanogenmod 9 has been stable for months now as they have been focusing on it as a main priority. Not to mention obvious extra features that they have been adding once they have been deemed stable. I use GLaDOS kernel and easily get 3x the battery life and way faster than any stock rom's kernel. Custom kernels like GLaDOS and Lean Kernel never had the "signal drop" issue with 4.0.4 because they patched it in their kernels a along time ago.
Root doesn't add any functionality that you are interested in? Have you heard of LBE Privacy Guard? https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5sYmUuc2VjdXJpdHkubGl0ZSJd

Yes, I am waiting for OTAs. Modifying my primary means of communication scares the crap out me, espeically with the chance of making it a $300 paperweight. I understand that tens of thousands of people modify their Android devices every day without issue, and the risk of bricking is extremely low. However, there is still a risk and due to that, I choose to wait. The reward does not outweigh the risk for me.
I just gotta say this. THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM. NONE. ZERO.
Why do you think android is open source? The arguments against rooting/unlocking and installing a custom rom are laughable. If you run stock, and complain about not being on the cutting edge, you have to realize that this is YOUR choice.
AOKP M5 will be JUST AS STABLE as stock, but with better performance, battery life, customization, etc.
If you are still on 4.0.2/4.0.3 you have nobody to blame buy yourself.

If you use the toolkits to root/unlock, and flash custom roms, the risk of bricking your phone is 0%. This is assuming that your phone is not a lemon.
There is NO risk to rooting/flashing custom roms, ZERO. Even if you did something stupid like pull your battery while flashing something, you can ALWAYS restore.

Hopeful
As much as I hope it is released for our phones, a single person who does live chats all day may not be the most rock-solid source. Any number of things could turn out to have happened, from misreading an information sheet before giving you said information to her being just plain wrong.
Thank you for posting this though, it is important that up to date information like that is made public. Its just that I'm not sure if one representative saying it is on its way is a complete confirmation.
Does anyone know how reliable these live chats usually are?

Not very reliable in this case since they are not allowed to give too much information out to the public. I posted a thread after I talked to one of Samsung's live representatives and they told me that the update would come in a matter of weeks. You can check my thread out if you want.

Ah yes I found that thread. Well if it was more than just one confirmation that adds too the legitimacy :good: I don't want to get my hopes up but its looking good!
I'd love for this to be true. I'm holding off on updating to a custom rom in case they push KitKat and it doesn't work after using the stock restore posted.

I was talking with AT&T repair regarding my phone freezing when switching from portrait to landscape since the 4.3 OTA and they told me they were not aware of a fix coming out for this, but that 4.4 will probably come out in a couple months and it may replace whatever is causing the problem. When I went to the Samsung Experience center to let them force the OTA onto my phone again to see if that would fix the issue, that tech said the same thing about 4.4 coming out, but he thought my freeze issue is hardware related.

I just went to change my sim card to one with secure element, and ask guy at At&t store ( is said "manager" on his name tag) about kitkat for S3. He answer
We don't have any specific date, but I heard it should be at mid May.

.
Make sense since S5 will be release in April so they can bust sell of S5 before they let us have it KitKat on S3.
Can anyone explain what would be the advantage of an official kk rollout from AT&T?
At this point in time AOSP kk roms are fully functional, no need to hang with an ugly fat chick like touchwiz haha

I've been using kk with pwncake's Quantum ROM for so long now, that I'm not very inclined to go back to touchwiz either. It's just too late.

Until there's an official update rolled out, I won't believe it

Kit Kat does bring down memory usage, so if you use or want some of the S applications and features that Touchwiz has, you should see better performance due to released memory.
Theoretically that is, I've been on CM11 nightlies for awhile now.
Some cant work with non stock roms...

Or, like me, simply do prefer them over AOSP ROMs
Anyway, Xposed now fills the gap of what's missing in most cases

Its not really important since most stock TouchWiz roms are total ****, especially those from samsung.
