So I tried searching for this, but couldn't really find it, I basically just want someone experienced to explain a few things to me.
My friend says the G2 has one-touch rooting, or something, is this true?
Same person says the G2 is unbrickable, because of rooting-protection put in the phone.
And that it can be overclocked to 1.4ghz.
I bought a G1 and bricked it while installing DANGER SPL, I now want to buy a G2, and want to know what the risks of rooting and installing custom firmware on it is.
If someone could basically give me a detailed run down on it, that'd be great.
I'm pretty good with computers, I figured out how to use ADB and etc. I know my way around linux command line and stuff, but I'm pretty new to android.

Yes it is a one touch root app. There's really a lot to it technically wise but here's the jist. No custom firmwares yet. Root only lasts till you rebot. There's a new security feture and everytime u root your phone and delet any files on /system or make any changes it erases on reboot and goed back to normal. It doesn't mess with your /data at all all the changes you make screen brightness, sound settings, apps you download will still all be there but /system is write protected and you have to re root again and everytime you reboot. But the one touch root app makes this simple. Yes you can oc to 1.4 gz but its via a module witch again you will have to re apply the module wen u reboot. The module will still be there you just have to run a command via terminal to initiate it. G script will help you a lot
Edit: not sure if its unbrickable I'm not gunna give an answere on that cuz I don't know for sure. I'm sure there's always a possibility to brick wen u have root but in the case of the g2 I'm guessing it will be very hard rite now
There is no Danger SPL to use for rooting the G2 (I bricked my G1 as well..) As the previous poster said, there is an one touch root, but it only lasts till you turn it off. This means you can't flash any roms or anything, you can just run apps that require root.
Ummmm....besides the whole "G2 is unbrickable" question, try searching the entire HTC Vision: G2 forum....i.e G2 Android Development . Im pretty sure all of your other questions will be answered.

So I finally got my G2/Vision, I want to perm-root my G2. But I fail so much, I can't even put Visionary into my G2.... I downloaded Astro, but I need to place Visionary r14 in my SD, but I can't find a place to put it.
When I look in my SD through windows, it shows me a LOST.DIR, .Trashes, .Spotlight-V100, .fseventsd, .android_secure, Android, etc. etc. But I still can't find the spot to place Visionary, Help?

Haha, I figured I'd just dl it off the internet through my G2. It worked. Configured it.

If you used Visionary and it worked for you, then that's great.
I also try and steer folks away from Visionary myself. Quite a few seem to end up with a lot of problems after using Visionary. The "rage" method of rooting is a lot more reliable, it's just that it looks a lot more "scary" to newcomers because there are commands you have to type in and run on your PC and phone. But if you read up on it, and ask questions if you don't understand, then follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine - and even if rage goes wrong then you won't end up with a semi-brick, you just won't get root (until you fix the problem).
Ohhhh, Ok. Yeah I couldn't get Visionary to work until several tries. Took me a while. I was supprised I hadn't bricked my phone already. But now I'm pretty satisfied with CM 6.1 w/ MattedBlues theme. Sucks though I couldn't get it to work with Virtuous. I really like Sense alot more than the stock Rom (I consider CM 6 to be pretty stock)

I am very new to Android,...I've only had my G2 for about 2 months...I ran Visionary temp root without issues (r10). When I tried to install in r14 to perm root, I encountered a myriad of errors, and decided not to root.
But I just couldn't give up on it....two weeks ago I got food poisoning, which rendered me useless and home bound, I decided to attempt it. I decided to use the rage method, but found that the instructions assumes that you know something about rooting. There are alot of people on this forum that are willing to help (steviewevie was one of them) to get you your through what ever hurdle you encounter.
Personally I found the rooting process very rewarding as I now have less of a vague idea of what is happening in my phone (ie not as lost as before).
Some of the basics:
- Install adb on your pc (not that scary), and read a bot on it...understand what some of the basic commands are trying to do. (see the rooting guide for those commands)
- set your path on your PC to point to the correct directory from where you are pushing (There are a few forums here that will guide you setup by step on how to do this)
-Follow the instructions to the T, and you should be ok.

NOTE:This Path should point to the location where you have your adb tools and location of the files you are trying to push to your phone.
Post #17 goes step by step on what you need to do, and how the lines on the terminal should look like.
This is really not that difficult once you get your bearings, and for me it was a lot of fun...actually a little bored with the phone after having done this.

Ouch! Really? So no method is any "safer" yet then? Was planning on return to stock then Rage today. I take it I can't update my radio without full radio s-off? Or can i"?

If you know how to read, you can safely root using rage. Just read over the instructions a couple times first.
If you know what your doing both methods are as safe as each other. From what I can see there is a larger margin of error using Rage, however its entirely in your own hands, so as long as you make sure you input it all correctly it should be fine.
Both "bricks" yesterday were recoverable, and both times the user was sure they followed it all correctly, it just seems that their rom corrupted during the process so ended up stuck on a bootloop.

Are you sure the corruption didn't stem from an earlier unsuccessful attempt to root with Visionary ?
I've yet to see a thread where someone has done something bad to their phone via rage, all it does is fire up a ton of process to use an exploit which gets you root. That can't corrupt your phone on its own.

Hi, I'm sorta a noob with rooting so bare with me. First, what version of visionary should I use to root my device? Will it work after the ota update? What are the chances of visionary bricking my phone or doing anything that would make my phone unusable? Will it put SU on my phone? And now for the main question, how will I get cyanogen on my g2? As far as i know visionary is not gonna brick your phone ,in regard to changing your rom you also need to s/off your phone, and to do that you need to setup ADB on your computer i suggest you read this posts first ,you will find all the answers you are after

After you root and s-off your phone you need to setup rom manager so you will get clockworkmod recovery and you can boot in to that and flash a new rom or kernel through there.
and i am not sure about the question you had about the update.

Ok, first there are already many threads on this subject, so next time you should try a search first,

Next the following links will help walk you thru rooting your phone using visionary r14. I have not had any problems with it, many people have rooted this way. If something goes wrong it is usually operator error. This method is for after the OTA. All needed files and links are in the video instructions.
Visionary has bricked phones before when not properly used, the videos show how to use it properly, use all the same settings in the videos.
This is the visionary method, but works perfectly when done correctly..
No adb needed.
Follow the videos to a "T", remove visionary and superusers from you phone if you already have them installed from a previous temp root before following the videos, start fresh, follow the videos starting with temp root then onto perm root then onto flashing a rom. Do everything just like the videos start to finish and you should have no problems.

Everyones still waiting on gingerbread, but it looks like Cyanogen is in the lead for releasing it.
Any time you flash a new rom you need to wipe data/cache in recovery. Updates to the same rom a wipe is not needed.
As far as what you want in a rom, my suggestion is to start flashing diffrent roms and give them a try. I thought I didnt like sense but I am currently running a sense rom (Virtuous). So you dont know till you try.
1) Don't use Visionary. People have had brick after brick when using it. Use the rage method.
2) There's a beta version of CM7.0.0 out. The devs are still working out the bugs in it.

1)Show me one brick from someone following the videos I posted and Ill take the links down. Yes a lot of people have bricked using visionary, but thats because they assumed they knew what they were doing when in fact they did not. Visionary causes bricks when not properly used, the videos shows how to use it properly. You must follow all the steps from start to finish including the temp root settings they use in the videos.
2)and yes there is a beta version of gingerbread out CM7 but Cyanogen did not officially release this version, and there are so many bugs in it I hardly think a noob needs to flash CM 7.0.0.

I recommend you read this thread and make informed desicions, if you know how to use ADB, then this is another method. But if you dont the method I posted above is your other option, it doesn't require the use of ADB.
As far as ADB goes this is something I highly recommend learning, but we all know some people just dont get it. It took me a lot of reading and watching videos to understand ADB. Now that I know how to use ADB its pretty simple, but I remember when I first started with rooting ADB was like reading greek. But I really cant stress enough the importance of learning ADB.

Oh, and another thing, if i root with visionary or rage, that only gives me root access. But if i flash a rom then i will also have cyanogen? And i was reading, since i wanna oc, whats this kernel stuff? Please forgive my noobish ways

I used the videos to root my G2, there have been a lot of bricks using Visionary but I have yet to see anyone say they followed the videos to the "T" and it bricked there phone. As for the Rage method, there have been almost no reports of bricks from this method, but I have seen a few bootloops (stuck on the HTC screen). It requires using ADB, so if your ok with ADB use the Rage method, if not, you'll have to weigh the risks based on your own ability. My suggestion, watch the videos, all of them and if its something within your skill range go for it.

Ok, get rooted first then you can worry about kernels, I believe Cyanogen 6.1.1 already comes with an overclocked kernel up to 1.42GHz. So all you have to do is flash CM 6.1.1 his latest release, then down load a cpu controlling app from the market like setcpu(which I use) or cputuner(free) and set the parameters you want your cpu to run at.

Not always hopefully if this happens you have gotten far enough along to put a recovery on your phone, or sometime you can stock recovery factory reset but if those options arn't there guess what you would have to have AndriodSDk installed on your computer with ADB, but you would have to do everything in fastboot mode which is giving commands from your computer to you phone. So it wouldn't be adb because you have to be booted into Andriod to use it, it would be fastboot and run commands similar to ADB, so for this purpose you would have to know how to use ADB. And even then no guarantees. So if you are looking for a guarantee you wont brick your phone there are none, and I wont give you one, these methods have been proven to work if you follow them exactly, mess up and you have a brick.
I know most people dont have $500+ laying around and I know I dont but for me the rewards far outweighed the risk. I just got a pm from another member that followed the videos and guess what he is rooted, he did it today. I asked him to post in this thread with his success story, so hopefully he will.

That has nothing to do with visionary, thats has to do with ClockworkMod recovery, if your phone is powered off and you plug it in to charge it boots into recovery, if you want root you have to deal with this issue untill they fix the bug in clockworkmod recovery. Also the phone shuts off fine unless its pluged in. Everyone with a htc vision phone who is rooted has this issue. as for me I charge my phone while it on so it doesn't bother me.

So, I looked through the forums and didn't find anything that applied to the G2, or told me what I needed to know, so I need some help. This is my first Android
device and I like it so far.
My first question is about the "VISIONary" App. I installed this about a week ago and along with it I installed "Titanium Backup", "Shoot Me", and "SuperUser" just showed up somehow. I've been seeing many people say that "VISIONary" isn't too reliable. So, if I want to try out, the RAGE version of the temp/permaroot do I need to uninstall all of these apps? Or Just Visionary?
Also, to uninstall visionary, so I need to press the "UnRoot" button, and then uninstall, or can I just uninstall.
I also thought that, "adb" was the same thing as rooting. According to the Wiki , they aren't. So I need to do both to successfully root the G2?
Is "OverClocking" a completely different thing too?
What do I have to look out for while trying to root my phone? Any precautions to not brick my phone.
Also, I found a really good youtube turorial - /watch?v=zdmtkHkrgLE - to Root, a Droid, are these the same instructions to rooting a G2?

You need to read and read and read some some.
I would suggest you check the wiki and look in the dev forum. There is plenty of info you have to look for it.

I'm no expert myself, just an average user who depends on the work of this awesome community to learn a little bit more about how these things work, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt.
I think all that matters for rooting purposes is removing VISIONary as the wiki states. As for how exactly to do this, not sure since I've never used it myself. Since it's just a temp root anyways, I'm pretty sure if you uninstall it and reboot at any time, it will be unrooted anyways. Titanium Backup will not even work without root, so you might as well remove it too (although not sure if you have to). I'm not sure what Shoot Me is. If you're in doubt, removing it before you root and reinstalling might help, but I doubt it's necessary.
The rooting instructions for the G2 are very specific. Do NOT use the same instructions for the Droid from that youtube video. I'd only recommend following instructions specific for the G2 you find on this site. This right here is definitely the best way I know to do it:

I'd had some experience playing around with rooting my G1, but I never needed to deal with adb and was also initially confused. It's basically a shell that you can use to communicate with your phone when its plugged in via usb to your pc, using a command prompt or terminal or something. The instructions for setting it up aren't 100% clear from the wiki, but this guide was amazingly helpful in learning how to set it up in Windows:

Once you have that running, following the recommended rooting method from the wiki (rage/gfree) is seriously a breeze. Just follow it carefully and you won't brick your phone. The devs have really simplified the process for us in a short period of time.
This was also a really helpful FAQ that pretty much answered all my initial questions when it came to rooting, if you read through all of this carefully, you'll be able to figure it out pretty quickly:

Also, if you plan on installing a custom rom like cyanogenmod (highly recommended), you may want to back up your copy of swype cuz you'll lose the swype keyboard when you do it. Here are some good instructions on how to keep that:

Overclocking is a completely different game. Once rooted, you can use an app like SetCPU to speed up the clock speed on your phone's processor (stock is 800 MHz). I've seen some people able to achieve speeds of 1.9 GHz or so, but what's more common is around 1.4 GHz if i'm not mistaken. Obviously, for the increased, performance, you'll take a hit in battery life and such, you probably dont want to push your phone's cpu too far if its not necessary. Rooting gives you the option though.
Lastly, if you want to unroot, there are more complicated methods posted if you use the older rooting method which is currently not recommended. For this method, you can basically follow the instructions in this post:

Small corection to the post up. Am not expert but I just did.
Set cpu will allow U slow down to 245 Your cpu or go 806. To go more then stock speed U have to flash new kernel and this metod is permanent overclock with will keep settings after reboot phone. Second metod is easy way using scripts. U can find scripts on xda. This will give U 1400.
Don't forget to setup profiles on SetCpu with save U Battery

since my first thread got close so fast;
as the other thread says, i tried Visionary+ and z4root, and now also Rage(or "gFree" as 3rd poster called it);
when i come to the 2nd stage of this thread ( [GUIDE] Instructions to Root G2 [Temp Root]) i close the terminal emulator, and when i start it again, it tells me i need to force close it, i do that, try to launch it again, nothing happends, the phone hangs, it becomes uber-slow and wont start anything, the only thing to fix that is rebooting, it seems, but then i have to rage it again
so, anyone wants to explain what to do?

Like the other poster said using the gfree method worked for me but I did use visionary for temp root to get the files I needed to where they had to go.
I hate to tell you to go to a different site but I used the new unlockr.com method which is the same gfree method with a mix of some of the true s-off guides.
because some file pushing commands where annoying so once you get a video guide on what to download and a writen guide over here just put the 2 together.
I moved the gfree file,busybox,data file to your data/local/tmp directory and moved the superuser apk on to the root of the sdcard and then followed the commands that actually use the file that you placed into your data/local/tmp directory.
you will need visionary just to get temp root to access the data privalge you will also need a app called rootexplorer you'll need this to get into your data/local/tmp but after you've read the directions a thousand times you'll know what I had directed you to do and why its easyier to move them manually.
I know that was a lot to read but that is plain an simple ways to manually move the files to the spot you need them without commands to move them you can do it your self but read this and the true root directions and the unlockr.com guide for this phone 3 times before attempting.

But your trying to get temp root and that's it and nothing else like your goal is to get garbage apps off your phone and to wifi tether or your aiming to flash roms and kernels?

FYI...They locked down his other thread because you are not suppose to post a Q and A thread in the Dev section. The Dev. section is only for posting ROMS, GUIDES, REF, RADIOS, KERNELS and the alike, Questions belong either in the Q and A section which he has now posted in or the Dev. Q and A thread started by Mod Captainkrtek HERE.

Which phone do you have, G2 or Desire Z? If Desire Z, which rom version is the phone running?

well, yeah, i want to get rid of garbage apps and tweak some files, such as gaining my own shortcut key as it was removed to fit Scandinavian language keys.
also, wifi-tethering exist under the name "portable wifi hotspot" in Desire Z

Desire Z, i'm running the rom that came with it.
Android 2.2
build number 1.82.405.1 (<- rom?)
Ahh now I know what your goal is then I could try and help a little more. but the rooting part if you read one part and execute it it won't take long. how far have you gotten did you download all the files need to root the phone from any guides yet?

you lack of dots, commas and question marks makes it really hard to understand what you are typing.
and i have no problems with using adb at all.
not to mention that your "guide" is almost the same as the one i used in the temp-root part.
the only difference i can see is how chmod is done and if u do /data/local/tmp/root after it .
@ comoba The problem is you have to downgrade your desire Z rom to 1.34 in order to temp root and root. Heres the downgrading instructions. You have the 1.82 rom and Im not sure if the downgrading will work for that rom, others have asked this same question on downgrading the 1.82 rom to 1.34 but I have yet to see confirmation of this.
@prittyboy203 you are giving wrong advice on rooting, you are telling him to push a file specifically for the G2 to his desire Z, you might want to do some research before giving advice.

You should get the prompt asking you to grant permissions. If you got the prompt, congratulations! You have permanent root!

Sorry for the double post but I wanted you to see this,
The method I gave you above to Downgrade your ROM HERE is confirmed to work with 1.82 rom even though the instructions were written to downgrade from 1.72 to 1.34. Heres the post confirming this.

if i was doing that; temp-rooting the first time, to get everything installed etc, would i still be able to temproot if i upgrade the rom back to 1.82? or should i do perm root because it would be better?
