[Q] Disable the camera, through firmware disable - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey does anyone know a way i can disable the camera on my evo. My work does not allow us to have cameras on our phones. I thought instead of putting epoxy or something over it i could just delete the firmware any ideas?
-chris

Question, are you rooted?

Use a rom where the camera dosent work anyway
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I sorry guys I'm a bit of a noob.... when t comes to this type of programing/developing... were can I get a rom to do this... or do i have to develop my own ?
rooted meaning it is not unlocked?
-Chris

Why not just get a silicone case for your phone and sandwich a piece of black plastic (cut from a trash bag) between the case and the phone so that it covers the lens? That will render the camera inoperable but is easy enough to undo if you want to use it when you're not at work.

Front camera also for the loss. I'd go to whoever your camera nazi person is and discuss your options before potentially messing up your phone for nothing.

yeah i spoke to the camera nazi lol and he told me i need to disable it so that i am unable to reverse it.... So i know people have got away with deleting the firmware. I would rather do it this way so that if i wanted i could hard restart it and get everything back. The other option is putting epoxy over both cameras... i was hopping it didn't get to that... any ideas?
Thanks,
Chris

Well the easiest, albeit time consuming would be to root and nandroidyour current firmware, and load up a second Rom, Luke the desire hd Rom and back that one up two and just switch between the two accordingly through nand restore

[Q] What should I do?! D:

Hello everybody,
I..am...retarded. I saw a lot of dust in my microphone port so naturally i got a can of compressed air to try to "fix" it. Well it broke my microphone, it still works but i would have to scream like a woman in a porno for anyone to hear me...not an option lol. So I'm running CM7 and I need a way to put everything as close to stock as possible so that the technician won't update my phone to the newest gingerbread update. I found THIS post but I don't know which one to install (being the noob that I am). I plan to uninstall ALL of the apps that require root permissions and back them up to my sd card...then install the stock ROM and hope and pray the technician doesn't see that i'm rooted.
So what do you guys think? is that enough to fool a technician? And what rom do i need to install? deodexed or odexed? and what's zip aligned?
Sorry for the noobiness but my mind has gone blank xP
thanks for all the help
If you are S-OFF just flash a sense rom and let it ota update. If you used unrevoked to root your phone then the ota cannnot set it S-ON. Then take it in. When u get phone back flash a custom recovery and go from there. Also put in an old sd-card that has no signs of custom roms and such. That's what i would do
Honestly if I were you I would just use a bluetooth headset. If you return the phone to sprint you are going to be screwed over, for now at least, with the unrooted 2.3.3. Wait till they get a root for that, then get sprint to replace it.
Unless you get a mentally handicapped tech they will check to see if you have s-off. They see you do and you are screwed.

it only picks up your voice if you moan "OH GOD YES DEEPER!!"? lol joking aside.
your mic is built into your top panel. so replacing the phone is POSSIBLE, but check with your local sprint store and see if they can just replace the touch panel. thats what we do at my store.

-.- well here's hoping mine doesn't haha. And either way, I can wait a little while to get root again. But I'll miss my CM7 :'( I'm not much of a fan of UI skins on android. I hope sprint gets the nexus prime

You can hope all you want, but you're gonna have GB on that phone.
HOWEVER, some refurbished phones were sent in with S-OFF and they are being sent back out with S-OFF so pray to the refurbishing gods that you get lucky
You can just take it in and they will usually just replace the mic, just let them know you don't want any software update.

You better be extremely adamant about not updating the OS. Like almost paranoid about it, people upfront often won't relay that info to the tech. I'd even put a mini post it on the battery or inside the back of the battery casing saying "DO NOT UPDATE SOFTWARE" or something of the likes. lol
The sprint tech said he couldn't repair it but didn't give a reason. Since they are sending a replacement can't they just use the parts from that phone to repair mine and send back that phone?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Well my replacement turned out to be S-OFF but I didn't find that out until i got my evo 3d and got home and checked xP. I figure I might mess with it for a while, keep it, or just sell it once cm7 comes out on the 3d (or a good stripped down sense version). So if anyone is interested in buying it, I'll provide some pics of the phone to show its S-OFF so you can know its legit.

Factory reset with Syndicate ROM

EDIT: Okay, now I have a much bigger problem. I dropped my phone a few minutes ago and the floor totally raped the screen. I now can't see anything I'm doing on there, and I know for a fact that if I bring it to a sprint store to replace it or something, the second they find out it's rooted they'll tell me to gtfo. PLEASE can someone tell me what I can do? Disregard the rest of the post.
I've been having a crap load of force close problems from nearly all of my apps. I resolved to just factory reset my phone, but I need to check here first.
If I factory reset my phone running syndicate, will it mess up my phone? If so, how can I go about doing it without messing up the phone or how do I fix the problem (if any of you know).
And please, no flamers.

Anyway on to a more serious note, some stores dont care whether your rooted, but wit that bein said is better to b safe then sorry if you dont care about loosing data then pull the battery wait a little bit and get into donload mode then odin, stock ec05. I can't see any of my screen. There isn't just a crack in the screen, the only part of it I can even see is a VERY small part in the bottom right corner. Is there anything I can do that doesn't require me to see or do anything on the screen?
I'd use one of those java apps to view the screen on my computer, but USB debugging is conveniently off right now.

I went to the store yesterday and the guy said I gotta do it online, so from what I know, I go through the process, they send me a refurbished one, and then I send them mine. At that point would my phone being rooted even matter? I mean I couldn't see them being like "WHOA WHOA WHOA, your phone was rooted when we got it here, send your new one back or we'll sue you."

Removing bloatware without rooting device?

First off let me apologize ahead of time if I'm repeating an existing post, I searched and couldn't find his precise question.
Is it possible to remove software that comes preinstalled and is ultimately useless such as Amazon MP3 (obtrussive crud of a app), Samsung Media Hub and Nascar Sprint Cup Mobile (to name a very specific few). Obviously phones are different than computers but the first thing I do wen I get a new PC is to reinstall the OS which clears al the bloatware that computer manufacturers preinstalling but phones do not allow any chance of clearing said bloatware via this method or any other method that I've seen for that matter short of wiping the ROM. I know it's possible using root kits and new ROMs but I don't want to risk my phone or my warranty. I just want 5 or 6 pieces of software to be removed to clear precious memory. I'd accept being able to disable apps so they wuldn't auto run too if removing them is impossible.
Is there any way that any of you know? Please say yes...oh pretty please!

You will need root to do anything like that. Autostarts is a good app for stopping apps from running at boot but it needs root.
It may seem a bit intimidating at first but it really is not that big a deal. Root is not going to hurt anything and you will end up with a much better experience.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Root and then download a file managing app that will let you delete system apps. ES File Explorer is one of them.
Take less them 5 minutes. Heck you get into rooting and flashing different things you'll learn you can recover your phone phone back to a out of the box state in almost every situation.
Just make sure to read, read, read some more. And watch some of QBKing77 videos on youtube about the Epic 4G.

Trust me... as long as you do research before hand and arent a complete moron, you will not brick your phone, its very hard to do. Also, your warranty will be fine as long as you dont overclock your CPU. Rooting your phone does not void your sprint warranty if i recall correctly....just make sure you odin back to a stock ROM before getting service. Make sure buy a different USB cable at the store before using ODIN, the stock cable that comes with your phone junk and will only cause you problems. Get a blackberry cable off ebay or newegg
Yeah and never pull the cable out in the middle of Odin. If it gets stuck pull the battery.

I guess I "afeared" of bricing cause of all the horror stories I've heard about it. Not sure why people are so afraid to root... my god its the best thing you can do as a consumer... to rely on your service provider to tell you what you can and can not do with you device is ridiculous... even the feds think so that's why rooting and jailbreaking are 100% legal

I know I have done it a dozen times too but that seems to be the common element to the few genuine bricks we see. Maybe it is just their phone that can't handle it. Or maybe it is pulling the cable when it is not stuck...dunno.

as long as you follow the steps in the tutorials, even the ones from the videos that qbking77 provides, you should have absolutely no problem. study the steps a few times in the videos, just to get familiar with the methods, then apply the steps as you watch the specified video. as long as you take your time and do things slowly, you should be fine.
Videos?
The vids you speak of, are they step by step? What I mean is, does the video secifically deal with the epic 4g and does it show where to get the programs, save them and how to install? I'd prefer to have someone there to "hold my hand" while I root for the first time but barring that if the vids are near that I'll feel better about it. Also, I searched youtube and couldn't find vids for epic 4g for doing this from start to finish.
I did, however, find a plethora of vids about rooting that start from a point AFTER they put whatever files were neded on the phon and have already done something I don't really know how to describe.
The incredibly funny thing is that I work in IT and have for over 20 years yet rooting my phone seems so incredibly dauntng. Much more so than it probably should by what you guys have said. I'm sorry for being such anobbisquet and I truly appreciate everyones responses and help. I've never been flamed on XDA and that is so awesome. Nothing ever gets done when evryone just responds "you're a stoopid noob who can't read so I won't tell you how to wipe your but never mind your phone." Or something as less than helpful as that.
Anyhow, thanks ya'll. I mean it.

in order for you to remove any bloatware, you must be on a "deodexed rom", temporary root only lets you do somethings, but i believe you cannot do that.

[Q] Optimus G Sensors not responding

Hey there,
I have been having some issues with my LGOG over the past month or so and I have just started to look into possible solutions.
I first noticed that screen rotation and proximity sensing seemed to be non-functional. I always had problems with screen rotation, but it basically stopped completely after I rooted/unlocked (using manuals on XDA and FreeGee app). I was stuck on ZV8 (couldn't upgrade because root) and figured that an updated ROM would solve my problem.
I have now updated to Lifeless v11 ROM and have found nearly every sensor (including light, sound, proximity, gyro, etc) to be non-responsive. I then thought this must be a kernel problem, so I tried flashing Joker's test kernel (from Aroma) and his Stockish 2.1.1 kernel. No dice. Additionally, I tried to do a sensor calibration and was given the message "Calibration failed. Try again".
I realize there is a possibility that this could be a hardware issue, but is there any other possibility I have overlooked? I have isolated some error messages in logcat, if that would help at all.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Seems like a defective phone. You should return under warranty.

Awesome, will do. Do you know if they will give me trouble for having messed around with things? I suppose I could always just restore my old backup I made with the stock ROM and re-lock the bootloader and unroot.
Do you think I need to go through that? Not that it's the end of the world.

Honestly I would just in case. Ya know? They could say you messed it up with whatever you did and whatnot.
Just for kicks and giggles.. What ROM are you on and what tweaks did you add?
Scratch that. Try reflashing the ROM after a system, cache, and dalvik cache whip. Very well could have been a bad flash. If that's not the case then clear, lock, and unroot.

Very cool, thanks for your great advice!
I was on Lifeless v.11. I tried your suggestion (wipe caches/system and reflash), but unfortunately no dice. I also tried rolling back to my stock backup and there is still no functionality. Seems like I have a broken unit. :/
I'm going to roll everything back as much as I can and cover my tracks so I can try and get a replacement this weekend. Hopefully they don't jerk me around too much in the process!
Thanks again, and have a good week(end).
EDIT:
BTW, I had installed all the tweaks that were installed with Lifeless (quite a comprehensive list). I thought that might be the issue as well, but seeing as how my stock backup is still giving me issues, it looks like it's strictly a hardware issue...
If you have insurance through Sprint you honestly should not need to worry about them knowing you had the phone rooted or anything. They asked me if I rooted the first android phone I had, but said they didn't care, they just had problems with reflashing rooted/unlocked versions of the phone before so were being safe. Now it's to the point where I just tell them I broke it lol. I took my LGOG in yesterday after a failed update/flash back to stock at work. Told him exactly what I did, they ordered me a new phone (New, not a refurb cuz they were on backorder ). I was actually able to get it fixed, and even let them know, and they said they already ordered it so I'll have a new phone on Monday either way lol.
I try to flash back to stock still, just in case that one day they decide to change policies without me knowing. But if I'm in a hurry I don't worry about it.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
dont think you are gonna walk in and walk back out with a phone. the G is on backorder. I've been waiting on a replacement since the 16th and still nothing.
Just for future information:
I went into the Sprint Store this afternoon and found, just as others suggested, that they would need time to replace it. They kicker was that they told me that there was no way that I would get a new phone as a replacement. I could expect a refurbished model of unknown quality.
I finally found out that I could take up the issue with LG directly, so I opted to do so. They informed me that as long as there was no impact or water damage (which there isn't), they would do their best to either repair or replace the phone. The problem is that I have to pay to ship the phone to their Texas plant and then wait for up to a week while they repair the unit.
This isn't the best of circumstances, but I figure this might be the better solution. I will be taking photos before I send it to be sure that whatever I get back isn't a random refurb with cosmetic damage (mine is almost pristine).
I'll keep this thread posted with how everything goes.
Same problem
guyz i got the phone from my teacher..he told me that every time he try to factory reset error comes"boot secure error" and phone cant factory reset and also rotation sensor not working ..i flashed official v19G and after that evert single one sensor no working, literally every sensor in showing 0 value through exilar app..any solution which can solve this ..???
my phone model is F180K

[Q] Does a stock FW restore the kernel if it was changed?

When I switched over from a black to a white Xperia Play, I ended up having to go with a used one. The bootloader was unlocked and it arrived running some version of ICS (which I immediately got rid of after finding out some of my most played games didn't work right).
The front camera has never worked for me. The back one works fine but if I even attempt to switch to the front camera, I get a prompt reading "Can't connect to camera," the app crashes, and I end up having to clear the camera's data and reboot before I can even use the back one properly again. The flex cable had been replaced, and from that it seems easy to deduce that my front camera issues might have been caused by an improper flex cable replacement.
I'm wondering though.. could it be a kernel issue caused by whatever kernel was tied to the ICS rom this arrived with? I used FlashTool to put the stock 2.3.4 generic NA rom on here (same one I've always used) and figured that would restore everything to normal.
...the front camera isn't scoring any high marks for quality, but I miss video hangouts on Google+
Its been a common problem for me the front camera broke on all three of mine :/ the two that survived one has a green front camera now and the other just doesnt work (cannot conect to camera)
I must say Im abit heavy handed and all of them have had a tough life lol
So it seems like the previous owner maybe was the same
And yes a full ftf flash will wipe kernel theres even a ftf to flash that will re-lock bootloader but personally I wouldnt its fun testing different Roms and conparing them to stock
I allways do witb my 2 xplays
P.s I miss your videos

Thanks for the response! That eases my mind a bit. This Xperia Play has a couple physical blemishes so I'll probably just buy another one sometime soon and be free of that camera issue that way.
BTW, holy crap! Time does fly... doesn't even feel like I've been half a year with no uploads. Now that I don't have finals on my plate anymore, I'm probably gonna get back to making videos.

Hey TLRtheory, I am a seller on ebay and despite me having a perfectlybfine xperia play I do always keep an eye out for xp stuff. You want me to keep an eye out for a white xperia play? If so what's your limit, your welcome to PM me that part.
