After a year of playing with the Hero i am now on the desire from Cellular South. i have rooted using unrEVOked and got Soff using unrEvked forever tool. im not a big fan of the CM6 and AOSP roms from the hero so i figure i wouldn't be very interested here as well so i have decided to just run my stock 2.1 rom. plus (unless i have read them wrong) most come with radio and im not really comfortable playing around with that setting.
Here are my questions.
1) i would like to use a custom kernal but it seems everything i have ran across is for GSM or have i overlooked it somehow? i cant get wireless tethering to work without it.
2) i have found a2sd already but before i go to it i want to get rid of some of this "junk" Csouth has installed. what programs can i safely remove with adb without causing problems.
3) if there are any roms that are "tweaked" 2.1 stock for the cdma could somebody be so kind as to point me to it as i cant seem to find one.
Thanks for any help y'all can offer.

hi all.
well im expecting to get abuse and called every kind of noob under the sun, BUT
im prepared to take it as normally someone will eventually give me the answer.
Currently i have a Desire - running Stock Froyo 2.2
i have rooted my desire using Revoked 3, so i have clockwork installed.
i have downloaded a few diffrent roms, but im getting confused with the instructions on exactly what to do to flash the actual rom on the phone.
Many people are saying about using diffrent tools/mods/processes, hench why i thought id come to the experts..
im intending on trying 4-5 diffrent ones to find the one i prefer, hench im looking for a general "do this, this, and this, reboot, bingo"
i have downloaded;
DeFroST_4.3
LeeDrOid_V2.1_A2SD
SuperFinal
(looking for OpenDesire, but cant find a dam download link which works)
i have used the nexus one (pure 2.2) and i really liked it hench looking for something fairly close to that.
can anyone help me please.
I think you need to read more pal, but essentialy the steps are:
1 reboot into recovery
2 wipe all your data (factory reset)
3 use the install from zip file option
4 enjoy your new ROM
however I would recommend you reading and studying the methods cause there's always a chance of bricking your phone

OpenDesire 4.0.33

It's the actual Rom install part I'm
unclear on.
Rom Manager
hi all, just to say i have been given the best advice going on another forum
ROM Manager, as it connects directly into Clockwork and enables everything that way, that should make flashing sooooooo much easier.

All,
I've had my Evo for a few months and have almost pulled the trigger for rooting and tinkering with the phone a few times, stopping each time to read more and more about concerns like backing up the WiMax radio, and other things. Having read as much as I can until my eyes bleed and my brain hurts, I have two remaining questions:
1) I'm wondering if there's any reason to wait until a Sprint-blessed Gingerbread update gets released. If rooted and on some 3rd-party ROM, is there ANY reason to think that anything undesirable might happen to my phone when this update is released? I assume rooting methods might change, but I guess it won't matter if I'm already rooted (?). Anything at all, other than not receiving Sprint OTA updates?
2) I know there are multiple ways to root. To me, the differences boil down to Unrevoked (one-click) and everything else. I don't mind extra steps if there's reason to perform them. The only "con" that I've found to using Unrevoked (assuming I have a compatible Evo) is if "something goes wrong, you will have a bit more trouble trying to find out what went wrong" ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865204 ).
I'm very concerned about having a WiMax radio backup and not losing my keys, and was planning on using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448 as xHausx mentions that explicitly, something I haven't seen very much. There seems to be some confusion that nandroid backups did/didn't backup your radio, or that only certain versions do/did.
Thanks for reading, I appreciate it.
Well im not an expert but this is what i know. First if you do root be prepared to go nuts. Once you get the hang of flashing roms/kernels you might get addicted and be flashing a rom or kernel way too often. Now all roms are basically the same with little differences that dont really matter. One is not better than the other you just have to find the one YOU like best. There are three types of roms. Sense based roms like Myns 2.2 or Fresh Rom. They are basically just like your stock phone with different apps and tweaks than sprint puts in. AOSP roms like Cyanogen Mod or Vaelpak. These are basically stock android (no sense) with little tweaks and apps thrown in. Then there is MIUI Rom which is basically iphones iOS for android phones. I tried all three and went back to sense roms cause everything works. Now for gingerbread. No doubt it will be better and faster than froyo. But it isnt going to be nothing evolutionary or anything. We thought froyo was going to be and its just a little better. Which will probably be the case with every new android update. So if you root you cannot get gingerbread when it is sent OTA, unless you unroot then update your phone. If your rooted you have to wait for the devs hear to cook up a rooted version of gingerbread. Which will take maybe a week after its official release. When i rooted i used unrevoked 3.21. I had to run it twice and it worked no problem. Flashed a rom and was on my way. I would say to use toasts method to root not unrevoked. Only because in order to run cyanogen mod. Which youll have to try. You have to downgrade your hboot to .76. Unrevoked does not do this and yes if you do have issues its kinda hard to figure wat is wrong. I did downgrade my hboot after and everything went fine, but i have seen alot of people having problems doing the way i did. Toasts method does this in the rooting process so youll be able to try any rom as soon as your done. Also youll get familiar with using adb shell, which i still dont know how to use because i used unrevoked. Now with the radios/rsa keys. As long as you dont try to flash a new radio or prl you wont lose your RSA keys. Ive never flashed one and my phone is fine. You dont have to update these. But if you decide you want to. Make sure and use amon ra 1.8 as your recovery and not clockwork mod. Amon will backup your rsa keys when you make your first nandroid backup after rooting and clockwork will not. One thing to remember is just cause some new version of a ROM or kernel or radio or whatever comes out and people are saying its so great doesnt mean it is going to be great on your phone. Some kernels will work great on your phone and suck on mine. If your phone is working great and youve found a rom you love and a kernel that gives you great speed and battery life stick with it. Everytime you flash something..you can have problems. Most are easy to fix by restoring a nandroid or wiping the phone and reflashing the rom. But still its not a good feeling. For instance i run Myns Rom 2.2 RLS3 his new version RLS 4 is out now and everyone says its great. But im sticking with RLS3 because it has the look, feel, speed, battery life i need and want and theres no reason to upgrade. Only when he releases a gingerbread version of his rom. Sounds like you have been doing your research which is good. I studied for a couple months before rooting. Everything in this post is what ive come to understand, but everything in rooting is development so nothing is set in stone. I may not be 100% right on all this stuff jus tryin to help
P.S. i used the videos made by djr3z over at http://www.thedroiddemos.com when i rooted.
Evo - Myn 2.2 RLS 3 - Clockwork - HBoot .76
Hey guys,
I'm looking at upgrading from the desire to a level up. Possibly the Incredible S or maybe the samsung optimus black.
Just wondering if you think the Incredible is a good way to go because I rooted my Desire with the greatest of ease, however, the other two I've been looking at seem to be more of a challenge. Don't get me wrong, I like a challenge But I want to be able to just flat out root *snicker* and then just flash different ROMs to see which I like the best.
Also, it's quite surprising that I had such an easy time rooting the desire. Basically because what I've read in the forums about needing radio, HBOOT's etc. Just to give you an idea, I only just rooted few weeks ago and these are the stats on a year old phone:-
Telstra branded (Only evidence of that left is a logo before bootanimation, which I would absolutley love to get rid of if anyone can help)
BRAVO PVT1 S-ON
HBOOT 0.93
RADIO 5.17.05.23 (flashed this straight after I rooted)
running Cyanogenmod 7.0.3(recently flashed nightly build#88)
Basically, I used Unrevoked to root (also had to get a driver to use that bleh!)
With ROMs that people are discussing that they need PVT3 or 4 I have been able to use on this one(flashed multiple ROMs and found I like Cyanogen the best)
Even if you have suggestions other than the ones I'm looking at let me know. Main interest in these two is because of the cameras.
Oh... and if you wanna flame, be my guest cause I've probabkly made it obvious that I'm a noob at this point lol
Any opinions are appreciated to say the least
I'm late on the bandwagon.. my first android phone, Evo4g running GB.
I've had it a few weeks now and also accepted the latest ota a week or two ago.
Hboot 2.16.0001, radio 2.15.00.0008, broadband 2.15.00.0808, kernel 2.6.35.10-g13578ee (or was it cc). Sw 4.53.651.1
what are my chances of rooting and putting on CM71? Base.d on the wiki, it looks like I'm out of luck, even with unrevoked. What about htcdev.net for obtaining s-off?
I'm also confused on how to get back to stock if I ever need to take the phone back (yes, I've read the readfirst doc), including getting rid of cwmod - back to 100% stock. Is there a way to backup my existing rom/kernel/?? and using that as opposed to an older img?
There's just too much info and old threads saying 'latest' to make it confusing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
As far as what mod to use, I'm anticipating cm71 basically because it looks about the most full featured and stable. I have no idea what 'sense' is other than being htc's launcher. I prefer goLauncherEx so if there's something that sense provides that my underprivileged mind doesn't know about feel free to enlighten me.
thanks tons!!
I second this question, I was given a HTC Evo 4g as a replacement phone from sprint after having 3 Epic 4g's and 2 Nexus S 4g's in 7 months. I would like to root this because it has so many unwanted apps.
Noob wants root? Noob should do some searching first. Answers to literally every question up there are already asked and answered 500 times.

If you have 4.53.651.1, then UnrEVOked should work... not sure on 4.54.651.1, which was the latest OTA security update package, though.
Have you even tried UnrEVOked, yet? Or HTCDEV.com? I would imaging that there is always a way...
ok first of all there are a lot of people here willing to help, but first you need to help yourself. do the research, and find out what method will work to root your phone. then read it at least 3 times. then when you start rooting your phone and get stuck people will be more willing to help. i personally rooted my phone a while ago so i have no idea as to what method would even work for you. second make sure you do a nand back up from your recovery when you get one. that will at least take you back to your stock rom, and to get back to s-on well like i said do the research and read read read. good luck and happy flashing

With latest ota, use revolutionary like a couple has posted. Unrevoked will not work on the gingerbread firmwares for the EVO. You need revolutionary.
It's simple and straightforward.

Thanks to all!
The issue was the overabundance of information and trying to weed out the non-current... not that I wasn't searching and reading.
I'm now up and going with synergy RLS1 (non-godmode)+chopsuey9.2.7+Amon RA Style Supersonic recovery 3.07.
Again, thanks for the assist!
right on glad you made it even if you were late to the party have fun and remember to make a back up and wipe wipe wipe happy flashing
Hi People, I'm A Softly Experienced Rom User. (Been Flashing Since Blackjack 2's Were Out...) But I've Run Across An Issue. I Updated My Evo, (Taking Me To HB 2.18) Rooted It Using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473373 & I Didnt Do The S-Off Process Because It Wasnt Neccessary For Me To Use A Custom ROM. I Flashed Energy ROM & It Worked Pretty Decent, But I Would Rather Have The Stock Rom. But I Can't Seem To Find Away To Go Back. I've Tried The RUU Method But That Doesnt Work Period For Me. It Always Errors Out. I've Started From The Bootloader but it just tells me my battery isnt charged enough even after i fully charge the phone. Im Completely Lost, Can Any Of The STRONGER ROM Ninjas Help Me?
If you want the stock rom, go to the dev section and look for either brad / miserinmotion / tommytomatoe's stock rooted rom. No need to unroot.
I Stumbled Upon Miseryinmotions Stock Rom. Thanks Man I Was Ripping My Hair Out Trying To Find It.
