Hello All, I did a search for this, but couldn't find any answers. I have setCPU, and it seems kind of complicated to overclock my g2, but I really only want it for underclocking. Is it the same process? As of right now, my phone will be rooted, and setCPU says it has superuser permissions, but won't actually undervolt. Any ideas?
If you want to learn how to overclock the easy way look up blackprince's root and overclock on youtube. As for underclocking, I believe you can just create multiple profiles and set the max speed below the standard 768Mhz.

What are the safe/stable clockspeeds for underclocking and overclocking my Desire Z? Also, what app do I use? Like, I don't mind paying for the app (as long as it's not too expensive)

SetCPU can be used to overclock if you're rooted. Depending on the ROM and Kernel combination, overclocking to about 1.3ghz is usually safe. Some go up to 1.5ghz or even 1.8ghz, but are often quite unstable depending on other configurations you have in your ROM.
As far as underclocking goes, some custom kernels clock all the way down to 122mhz, I've been using a streamline5 kernel on CM7 (which offers 122mhz min) and haven't had any ill effects with this.
I have the Virtuous Sense ROM (with it's default kernel, although it does have other kernels which can give other cpu speeds), right now but might try out another ROM soon (maybe) do you know what's the min and safe max for this ROM?
Also, can I just set a particular clock speed (e.g. 500MHz) and it should be ok or is there any stability difference between say 500MHz and 505MHz? Just curious. I looked at SetCPU and it looks like a good one. Also, if the clock speed I set makes things go wrong, can I revert it or can I get stuck with it and need to do a wipe?

No, there's no need to set a particular clock speed. Just whatever works for you. I wouldn't recommend going under 800mhz, as the phone will really really bog down even with normal use.
I haven't used that particular ROM, but I'm assuming anywhere around 1.3ghz should be safe on the upper limit. Like I said before, anything above that might start to cause issues. You might also want to consider the battery life implications of severe overclocking.
You can change the clock speed any time you want. If you're having wakeup or heat or any other issues just go back to SetCPU and change the max clock speed again. You can also use profiles in SetCPU to change the clock speed when the phone is overheating, or when the screen is off, or when the battery gets to a certain %. There are tons of posts detailing how others have setup their SetCPU profiles.
One last note, don't forget to check the box for "Set on Boot" in SetCPU, this way your changes aren't undone on reboot.
Thank, I think I got everything I need to know in your last reply
I'm on CM7, with the CM7 kernel, and clocked in at 1.5GHz, and have no problems, and the rom is super fast. And I use SetCPU.
So i was looking around on App Brain for some rooted apps, and came across this. Figured i would give it a shot, figured no one had tried it yet on a dinc 2. And what do you know it works, Set my clock to 1.024, of course you have to be rooted to try this app. but since there aren't a lot of kernels out there, and the one that is doesnt work well with my rom, figure i will give this a shot for a while.
Anybody try this app? Confirm this works, seems to work for me.
I have used it, but it doesn't overclock because the stock cpu clock is 1GHz, or 1024MHz. I guess it could be used to underclocking, but thats about it.
Hmm seems to run a bit better...but who knows...at least its something until i can get a working kernel.
Any little bit helps
SetCPU overclocks right? I've got mine set at 1.305 MHz, but it has no modified Kernel, so I wanted to be sure that I'm really getting 1.3 GHz out of my processor

Download a system info app. Will tell you your CPU speed
sent from an under rated phone
I use it... I love it.
It even lets you set I/O scheduler.
Also, if your phone does an "unclean" reboot, the app wont apply your setting on next boot.
Setcpu will not overclock unless you have an oc kernal. You must be using a non-stock one.

This app will give you your CPU stats so you can test, so you can underclock or overclock. Depending on what you want.
Hey guys,
I was just wondering what everyones choice of CPU configuration apps are because I'm stuck between SetCPU and CPU Control >.<
Feel free to post any experiences or comments with your chosen one!
SetCPU or Antutu
I always liked CPU Tuner. Very customisable and free
No doubt.
SetXperia
If you wanna be able to undervolt with DooMKernel, Incredicontrol is the way to go.

Take a look at SystemTuner Pro
try no frills cpu, you can set i/o scheduler as well, but you cant undervolt
Lol, the guy was stuck between two and now you give him 5 more options.
I chose SetCPU. It's a good application, updated regularly, and his developer shows appreciation for how his app should work
XPlay-Swype
SETCPU is pretty much the best imo
Incredicontrol is the best for undervolting IMO, setcpu for setting profiles for different situations. Haven't bothered with the others.

I was wondering on how exactly I do this? I looked through and seen people talking about it, but not how to do it. Can someone explain to me what it does, and how to do it?

There are actually several ways to do this. The most popular of which are to have a rooted rom, install a separate application and use that application to modify your cpu speed. The more popular applications to do this are:
SetCPU
ROM Toolbox
ROM Toolbox light
I've used all of these and if I could suggest one to you, I would say ROM Toolbox, because it gives you a lot of other tools that SetCPU does not. HOWEVER, I find that in regards to overclocking/underclocking and setting profiles, SetCPU is much more handy and offers more customization.

Is there any certain configuration that you find best? Thanks for all the links and suggestions also!
System tuner pro is also nice. There is no " right" settings. Your phone might not like my settings profile. They are all different. I do however under clock. I see no lag on cm9 beta1. I use a Max CPU of 1ghz. I also under volt everything by -25 because -50 on Evert step crashes my phone. Yours may like it. Just remember do not push the set on boot button until you are sure your phone can handle the new setting.

It is pretty much a try what works. I find that over clocking is nice for certain things, but I like to have a long battery life as well, so I have mine set up so that the CPU is usually running ondemand 800-200 and for certain programs, ondemand 1200-500 and when the screen is turned off it is ondemand 500-200. I haven't had any problems and my battery life is generally very nice. Everyone's phone is different though.

I just rooted my s3 and would like to overclock it a little. Just wondering what the best settings would be and if Set cpu is indeed the best app for this. Thanks in advance and I apologize in advance if I'm in the wrong section.
First you're going to need to flash a kernel that has overclocking capabilities. I highly recommend ktoonsez however if you are not familiar with extreme customization, then faux or lean kernel are better suggestions

I also suggest that whatever app you do use (I use SetCPU as well but they all generally work the same), DO NOT SET ON BOOT.
Since you aren't quite sure you know what you are doing yet, if you input a wrong value or your CPU can't handle "that high" an overclock or your CPU cannot handle "that low" of an undervolt and have it Set On Boot, you will be stuck and have to Nandroid back.
Once you know if certain values work for you, then use Set On Boot.
