So, I'm going go to Sprint to pay the 35 dollars to get my screen fixed. Would it be a big deal if they see that the phone has Cyanogen on it? Bought the phone from Radio Shack so it's not like they would tell them about it. xP
It probably depends on the store, but I took mine in the other day for a screwed up screen, and they fixed it. I know they rebooted it, because it was off when I gave it to them and on when I picked it up. So I know they saw the CyanogenMod boot screen. I'm sure other things may have tipped them off, too, but they didn't give me any trouble about it and let me sign up for their protection plan anyway.
Give it a shot. It's not like they're going to hold your phone ransom.
P.S. I did take my SD card out before I gave it to them.
As always, I recommend you unroot. We all know that rooting doesnt cause hardware malfunctions, or has nothing to do with your scratched screen. But it does void the warranty, and there is always the possibility they will catch it. I wouldnt take the chance.

Well if they do care, and they do catch it, they will permanently void your warranty, so every sprint store will see it and you will never get your phone fixed.
Maybe hold on to your battery while they fix it?
Or just take the steps to do a nandroid backup, then unroot it.
I never bother unrooting before having my phone serviced, I just do a nandroid backup and then install the RUU ROM version. Unless they boot into recovery, they can't tell and it's so much easier to restore when I get it back.
The guys at my sprint store are always fascinated with my phones when I bring them in. I had my Evo rooted before I even activated it, put CM 6.1 on it, tried to activate it but it wouldn't so I took it to the sprint store and they couldent figure it out. Brought it back home, flashed stock RUU and activated just fine, took it back and let the guys play around with CM 6.1 and they were asking how to root theirs.
I guess it just depends on the store

Don't worry, you're rooted EVO will be just fine.. Now, if it were an iPhone and you were going to the * I have Mr job's hot dog up my azz* 'Genius Bar' .. that'd be a different story..
I Called and asked if they cared that my phone was rooted and they didn't. Doesn't sound like your going in under a warranty item your paying them to fix it. They generally only care about rooted if your having software issues. Like I said call the store DON'T give them your name talk to the tech and ask him what their policy is on rooted phones. it would seem to me your paying them to fix the screen it shouldn't matter if its rooted or not. Call them and ask it wont hurt.
If you have TEP on your phone does it still cost $35 to have your screen replaced. I have a tiny scratch on mine and I'm not sure it's worth $35 but if its free I might do it.

Nope with TEP it is free. Had my cracked camera lens fixed yesterday and they new it was rooted. Free with TEP. To be totally safe just nandroid and unroot.
Sorry for the N00B question but how would I nandroid and unroot?
Any cosmetic damage will not be covered under TEP for free you will have to pay the $35 to get the screen fixed. so if the screen just has a scratch they wont replace it for free they will make you pay the $35 fee
If you are going in for a scratched screen, I doubt they would care. Just nandroid backup and flash the stock RUU. However, for software issues, the stores and refurb people are soon to be asked to check in recovery for S-OFF and void your warranty.
Half those guys in the store probably have a rooted phone themselves.
The Sprint store I go to, 2 of the guys have rooted evos and another has a rooted samsung galaxy s. Maybe go in there beforehand and talk to some of them. They dont even care about rooting necessarily; its not like it screws the sales guys or anything.

No, I'm told that if the screen isn't broken, they won't fix the screen for just scratches.

Haha thats actually not true at all. Apple replaced my iPod touch headphones 4 times while I had that device. To get them replaced they needed to see my iPod to check some setting on it. Every time I brought it in it was jailbroken, themed, and had hidden icons so I always had to help them find the settings app. Nobody ever called me out on it being jailbroken and I was never denied service or warranty coverage because of it.

They were probably embarassed you had to help them find it.
My store, one rooted Evo, and one rooted Intercept. Here we don't care about it too much.... unless the customer is a straight up ass.
Store I use to work at, rooted Evo, rooted Epic, rooted Hero, but they don't do S&R there.
Is there any way to fix this? The guy at the Sprint store said all it needed was a little soldering. Since I do not have the screw driver required or know how to solder how can it be done? My dad can solder so he could probably do it, but where would I solder it to and where can I get the screw driver? Thanks.
The sprint store should fix it for you, if it's a repair center. Do you have TEP? If so, it should be free. If not, its 35 bucks. Dont try to fix it yourself, its not easy.
The guy said he can't because it is rooted. And he said he can't work on it. I have insurance. Its 100 dollars for a new one

WHY would you take it to Sprint while it was rooted? I say unroot and try to take it back.
Yea, I'm not sure why you would take a rooted phone to a sprint store, knowing that rooting voids your warranty. We all know that rooting isn't the cause of some hardware failures, like your broken port or a bad screen. But to sprint, it voids your warranty.
Hopefully, the guy didn't flag your ESN. If he did, you are screwed, because no matter where you go, they will see that and wont fix it. My advice, completely unroot, flash back to stock rom, then try a different store. If it works, it works. If not, then you have learned your lesson.
I thought as long as it isn't a software issue, rooting the phone doesn't void the warranty?
my sprint store fixed mine for free. most of them just heat gun it.

Again, WE know that a hardware issue isnt caused by rooting. But to sprint, it doesnt matter. Rooting voids your warranty. It's their warranty, they can say whatever they want voids it.
I did not take it, mom did. And the guy said I could get my phone for insurance and it costing 100$, but if I ever rooted it again it would be a no go. But I mean, is there any video or something that I could see where to solder it at?
And Idk if the guy woulda flagged it, he was pretty cool about it.

The same thing happened to Mr and those bastards didn't want to fix it for some reason so I pay the $100 the biggest problem was to unroot my phone without the charging part, it took me a while but I did my best and now that I have ver 0003 (instead 0002) the screen is different but it was brand new even cane with memory card which I kept both lmao but don't do it yourself if you try to fix and mess it up then insurance probably wont cover it and I recommend you to past it as a stolen phone instead, I feel your pain man

Because some Sprint stores are cool about it. My local Sprint store is the busiest in the nation, so you'd think they'd be strict. When I asked about having a problem if I were rooted, the tech told me not to worry as he whipped out his evo running Virus Z and the salesman whipped out his running Cyanogen.
So could I unroot via that method I mentioned above? And the tech said something like they could still tell if it was rooted if the codes were still on it after I unrooted.. Any idea?

You could just run over the thing and have it replaced. They wouldn't know it was rooted then!
I think I will just save up for a new phone. The reason I didn't want to was because I didn't want a new hboot version and go through the process of the root because I am not sure what you can/'t do. But with mine I can do anything (figuratively speaking). But Yea I got 60$ saved up, only 40$ to go
Ok so im having the loose usb port problem with my phone and im going to be sending it in for warranty exchange. One thing is i rooted my phone and the S-off shows up if you look. Also i never installed custom roms or anything so it looks like a normal evo if you flip through the menus and stuff. Superuser is also gone and no root apps or anything is on the phone just that it shows s-off if you look. So will sprint look for the s-off when i ship it back to them a charge me or anything?? im also running the OTA 2.3.3

Different stores have different standards for root. My store here in knoxville told me, of course after I've unrooted sadly enough, that they do not check for s on. They only look to see if you have a custom Rom. And especially if it is a hardware, the rep told me they don't normally care either way. If it is software related, they will not work on a device running a custom Rom.

I'm curious as to why you are sending it? Going to the store is easier. And also, if they don't fix rooted devices, all they can do is tell you no and send you away.
But personally I don't think they will check. Especially because your issue seems to be a major hardware issue.

I also have had bad experiences at Sprint stores. They all seem to treat you like you're dumb, but soemtimes you get lucky and get to speak with a nice respectful rep.
Here is what I would say/do.
First, do you have insurance? That is very important.
If you do, try this. But proceed with caution.
Take your micro usb cord and really jam up your slot. Like, really bend the attachment piece out of place.
Go in and tell the rep that your device does not charge properly and really needs repair or replaced. Ask nicely. I'm sure those peeps deal with jerks all day long. Prolly why they dish back out to some of us nice folks.
Show the repair tech the damage.
If you have insurance they will be more than happy to help you.
If you don't have insurance please please please do not take this route!!!

Oh.......
Here is the deal. I've asked several different sprint reps about this over the phone as well as in the store.
Once you purhase your Evo, sprint gives you a 30 day warranty. Within 30 days, you are eligible to return phone, trade phones, or replace phone with a brand new one if there are manufacture defects.
After 30 days, your Sprint purchase warranty ends. But HTC also has a warranty. It is a one year limited warranty. It is mainly for defects and other various issues. Basically, you send your phone ($6 shipping handling) to HTC and they diagnose it. If it is manufacture defect, they either repair or send you a refurbished device without charge. If they decide it is user error or you damaged phone, they call or email you to inform you that you have two options. A. pay full price for repair and shipping back home. B. Pay 35$ fee to get phone back unrepaired.
The deal is this. Sprint offers you the service and guarantees you service and only the service. Your device was not made by sprint but by HTC, and being so, issues must be dealt with through HTC...unless you purchase insurance.
This is my advice to you. Call sprint. Ask them about insurance. It is $7 a month. Ask them how soon it takes affect after you purchase it. Usually is immediate. Then, in the next week or so, go to sprint store. Now you have insurance and they will deal with you and repair your phone right there and then. And if you want, later after your device is fixed, you cancel insurance.

I'm 100% positive I just bricked my phone. I was not thinking last night and pulled the battery while flashing a radio update. I know that I've got a literal brick on my hands but I had a couple quick questions:
Can Sprint tell that my phone is rooted at all if I take the SD card out when I bring it in?
Is there are actual solution to this problem that involves NOT taking my phone to Sprint?
I'm prepared for ****ty answers, but I've got high hopes that I'll just eat the insurance cost and get a new one.

Did something like that to my captivate on at&t and all I did was take it in and told them that when I woke up there was a black screen and I couldn't do anything, and I just acted really stupid and told them that I had no idea what happened to it. I appreciate it. As for the brick restore methods, unless there's one for a "completely dead, USB doesn't recognize it, and LED doesn't turn on" brick, then I'm just wasting time. I looked at most of them, and they all require the phone to actually do something... which mine will not.
Damn, sorry to hear that. Yeah if its not doing ANYTHING I would just bring it in an claim insurance on it, tell them you have no clue what happened, just woke up and it was like that (like someone else said to do). Good luck. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I wouldn't worry about it. If the phone won't turn on and you take it in & just play dumb, they'll give you a replacement. You won't have to pay the deductible. You lost whatever data you didn't have backed up, but other than that you don't have much to worry about.
There's no coming back from pulling the battery during a radio update, and I doubt Sprint will make it difficult for you. If they do happen to tell you that you have to pay the deductible, argue against it or take it to a different store. Most likely they'll just file a claim and get you a new (or refurbished) phone within a day or two.
Good luck!

I went to my Sprint store the other day. They said they don't care if it's rooted or not. Just bring it in and they will look at it. They said usually they can fix most problems.
Just to update you folks that may have also been interested:
I went in and played stupid. I also pulled my SD Card so they couldn't use that against me. This was the dumbest thing I've ever done to brick my phone, but it looks like all is well. As of today they said they've already ordered me a free replacement due in on Monday. Apparently it won't even cost $100 due to having TEP. I'm not sure that I believe that, but that's what the guy said on the phone. If anyone is interested I can update this once I know more.
Sprint openly supports rooting.. Idk if anyone else knows that.. After the new policy kicked in, they might as well just say that seeing as how the TCs are required to work on rooted devices. If they can't fix them, its a DHRP. that's the word on the street anyway

That's good to know. I took my phone in 2 or 3 weeks after the Gingerbread update and all the tech did was ask if it was rooted. Someone looked at it the day before and and I had just unrooted it about an hour before that. Someone else was telling the tech to look for the s-on/s-off. I really don't think the tech cared. Glad they might have changed.
Yet my friend Rachel, who is a tech at the local store confirms yet again that they are NOT authorized to work on Rooted phones......

Well that's funny seeing as how I am a TC for a corp. Store in Texas. Hmm... Seems like we're getting two different stories from the same company... Our superiors within our region have confirmed what I have said verbatim. We are required to work on them if they are rooted. If we can not fix the device we must replace it.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Best bet is to fully unroot just to be on the safe side. Then whether or not techs are authorized to work on the phone is moot.
Confirmed by three stores in Connecticut, 2 corp stores, 1 authorized reseller/repair store.. That they do not support rooted phones.. Had to unroot to get my replacement phone when the USB started only partial charging and was clearly a hardware defect and had nothing to do with software.. They opened it confirmed so physical damage after I brought it back unrooted.
Didn't mean to abandon this post guys. I just simply forgot about it. Sprint replaced my phone free of charge since I truly did fry it. They couldn't recover anything and I didn't leave the SD card in for them to check.
Best bet: unroot if it works at all or brick the **** out of it. Also note I had TEP. So, that's important. All in all I think Sprint is still a bit douche on the root business, but they handled this situation relatively easy and painless.
Basically, here is what happened.
Was flashing a new ROM with CWM, and I was using the new CWM touch (which I though was cool at the time). When I flash my ROMs, I usually have it on a SD card ready to go, format everything (ext, system, interal_sd, dalvik cache, battery stats, etc) but when I flipped my phone over to pop in the MicroSD card, my index finger hit the reset button. Oops...I thought no big deal at that moment, until I realized that my phone wouldn't do anything now.
So yeah, when I hit the power button the blue LED comes on, but screen stays black. Have to pull the battery to get it to go off. So I went to radio shack, bought some 100k resistors and made a jig...didn't work. When I pop it in, it just gives me the blue LED immediately, but that's it. I thought my jig was bad, so I bought one from usbjig.com, which does the same thing as the one I made. Either the one I made was bad as well as the one I bought, or my phone is beyond fixing? I am infuriated with CWM Touch, which I thought was great...but it's the reason I'm in this predicament. Any hope of fixing, or should I just activate my old Plam Pre until I can get a new phone?
Hope you bought insurance.
CWM touch destroys our phones. There are only a dozen or so threads telling people to stay away from it.

Hey OP, its not looking good my friend... I am a little confused though, why was your SD card out while flashing? Is that how you had been flashing ROMs: take card out, wipe, then insert card and flash ROM? As all of that is unecessary, when you wipe the phone it does not wipe the ext sd card as well. Second, does your computer recognize the phone at all, when you plug into the USB do you hear a "ding"? My guess is that a trip to the Sprint store is in your near future. Ultimately, not a huge mistake just $35 out of pocket if you dont have insurance.
you bricked it. warranty, insurance, or sell. i lost $200 due to a bricked device and no warranty.

So I spoke with someone at the Sprint store, and they basically said that if it required a replacement, I would be getting a refurb and it would be Wed at the earliest before they would have one for me. Instead of going in and dealing with them, I'm just going to do an insurance claim.
per #13 use the mobile tech videos web site. i have several friends that have used them for this very issue and works like a charm.
MobileTechVideos was able to resurrect my epic 4g too! I give them two thumbs up!
i had the BLOD( blue light of death) and nothing will fix it! no jig and no JTAG
I had a problem with my USB port not recognizing mtp/Mass strorage. They replaced it for free with a refurb. No problems since. As for touch recovery, tried it once while on gb. Nearly bricked my device back then. And no ICS was available at the time. Thank goodness. Used sfhubs one click about 7 times before it finally booted . Just my opinion, and i apologize to any devs working on a touch recovery, but touch recovery is the devil to the E4GT. I won't ever use it. I do have a few versions on the pc for Library reference, but will i ever use it..even the new one, you are playing with fire. Ya won't ever find that recovery on my phone. I hope this is a lesson learned. Take it to sprint, use your insurance (that's what its for) and chalk it up to experience.
