Nandroid from a previous Root - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Perhaps it was only a one time occurance, but long story short I can confirm that if you have a rooted phone, make a backup, unroot for some reason, then reroot, you can in fact restore to your backup.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

I rooted my replacement device and did a nandroid restore from my SD card with a ROM that I was running on a phone that I had to return...no problem.
Sent by that voice in my head.

is there any reason it wouldn't? your sdcard doesn't get wiped , unless you do it

Delete ROMS after a nandroid backup

Can you delete a rom off your sd card after youve installed said rom and done a nandroid backup? will that backup still bootup and run correctly
If you talking about the actual ROM zip file then yes you can delete it. If you are talking about deleting other Nandroid backups yes you can. Just make sure you don't delete the most recent nand backup.
thank you sir
I usually like to keep my ROM on my SD card so if something goes wrong, at least I have it. The only time this practice has ever been useful was when I flashed Amon Ra and tried to flash a new ROM. Went into bootloops and found out the hard way that Clockwork nand backups don't work with Amon Ra. Because I had my ROM, I fixed it easily.
Just my two cents. Nandroids usually do the trick, though.

I usually keep 2 nand backups on my SD card 1 stock sense and 1 of my current rom. If I have any other roms Ill just save them to my pc to keep room in the sd card clear.
finding this out now flashed amon ra 1.8 and doesnt see any downloaded roms on sd card, rebooted phone and i have no service. working off wifi only, rom manager is gone and I cant access the market to download ,any ideas
"the process com.android.phone has stopped"
Do you have Rom Manager? If so you can try flashing ClockworkMod...
Sorry, just reread your post...

Place the ROM on the root of your SD card. It must not be in your download folder.
I learned my lesson today and will always keep a zip of a rom on my card. The latest version of clockwork was a bust. I couldn't use my phone for almost 2 days. Thank god I fixed it.

OK. so what happens if you are running beliEVO and then flash Cyanogen. Can you restore a backup from a previous ROM without bricking the device? And if you can will app data be there?

If you had done a nandroid backup of the beliEVO rom before flashingCyanogen rom, then yes, your can restore the backup and all the apps will be there.
But it's always a good thing to backup the apps before flashing a new rom.

Awesome. Same rules apply if it was not specifically a Nandroid? I used ROM manager prior to flashing Cyanogen.
This is a helpful thread, i was also wondering this...
I have a question, can I rename my nandroid backups on my SD card so I know which backups are which?
Also, sorry to sorta hijack your thread, but I backup my apps with mybackup, and data with titanium, but how do I restore that info if/when I flash a new rom? I'm using cm6 and loving it but would like to try more... thanks!

yes, you can rename backups for both RA and CWM backups, I've has issues with putting spaces in the names though so use _ or -

Changing roms

I tried searching for this, but the app seems to have some limitations. Please forgive if this is a repost. I have been on my 3rd rom for 2 weeks now but want to check out another new release. Long story short, I don't want to lose anything installed or subsequent app data. How can I back up and restore all of the non-rom data and have all of the new goodies of the new rom laid on top of the great app/personal data/settings?
Is this a dumb question?

Thanks both for feedback. So I can back up on titanium to sd then wipe all the cache etc, flash new rom, restore?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
This is a fool proof list:
1. Titanium Backup all apps and data
2. Boot into clockworkmod and wipe data 3x
3. Flash new rom
4. Download titanium backup from market and install backups.
Thank you good sir.

Just out of curiosity, as long as you wipe the three things in recovery, will restoring old data on top of a new ROM from TitaniumBackup ever cause problems?
I've heard some people recommend not doing that, but never really gave any explanation.
Installing from titanium backup won't cause problems as long as you don't mess with system apps.

[Q] Restore old Nandroid backup with Clockworkmod 3

I was running Clockworkmod V2.5xxx (?). My DI was replaced under warranty. I was planning on restoring my nandroid backup.
Question:
- Do I have to load CWM 2.5xxx to restore my nandroid, or will CWM 3.xxx do it?
Sorry - I have googled & searched on the forum, but have not been able to find the answer or threads pertaining to this...
I don't have the zip with me but it is on the warm z thread to change back to 2.5 temporarily. You can then flash the recovery and when you reboot make another backup through 3.x
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
From what I've read you can restore your backup but it apparently will restore the phones unique android ID which can cause problems if your previous phone is ever going to be used.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
THANK YOU!
Will try to pull down .apk from Warm Z thread & try to restore. Old phone has a blown earpiece and is back to VZN, so hopefully will never be used again
ANSWER
Found an easy answer.
Had a new replacement phone. Rooted with Unrevoked3. By default, CWM 2.5.1.2 is installed. Voila, could restore my old backup no problem.
Thx all-
They're most likely just going to replace the speaker and send it back out as a certified like new replacement.

It's not "no problem." By doing so, you're cloning the android_ID from your old device, which is simply going to be refurbished and sent to someone else as a CLNR, onto the new one. This represents a pretty substantial self-inflicted compromise of your data. Best practice would have been to back up and restore your apps with TB and perhaps your texts with something such as SMS Backup+.

Easily restore all apps.

Hi everyone. I have two questions today.
First, is there a way to put all of my apps and data on my phone very quickly after flashing? I hate going through titanium and restoring one by one.
Second, has anyone heard about Windows phone 7 development progress? I Can't seem to find the thread about it.
Thanks.

*IF* you're flashing a nightly build, reflashing the same rom cleanly or flashing a very similar rom, all you have to do is boot into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik and then create a nandroid backup consisting of only your data, and android.secure and sd-ext partition (if you have your 3rd party apps stored there). When the backup is compete, go ahead and do a full wipe and flash the rom you desire to flash. Afterwards, boot into your homescreen, bypass the sign-in process and remove the default widgets from all of your homescreens. Now reboot into recovery and restore the backup you just made. When you boot back into your homescreen, your apps, data and screens will be as they were.

Aright, so nand data and android.secure (I don't put apps on sd). Wipe everything. On new ROM get rid of all widgets. Restore nand. Done.
Dude thanks. This will save me so much time.
Yes, but just so we're on the same page, when I say remove the default widgets, I'm only referring to the widgets that are 'displayed on your homescreens' when you initially bootup after a fresh install.

Spend the $6 for Titanium Pro, and you don't have to restore them one by one. I resisted for awhile because $6 seemed high for a single app, but it's worth it.
Use mybackup root. It does what titanium pro does but it is free. There is a paid version if you like it to donate. I would just make backup, wipe then download mybackup again from market and restore. Don't have to do one by one it does batch on its own.

As for your second question. I thought I read they deleted it due to it not going anywhere. I may be wrong though because I just came over from the hero forums. I read that in another forum someone else may be able to tell you more.

Nandroid backup using CWM recovery

Ok I use Nandroid recovery to restore my phones instead or a backup app simply because (1) I'm a cheap bastage and (2) nandroid works from one phone to another as long as I root it, and I have a question. How do I delete a nandroid backup? I have three on the phone right now and I want to delete them and make a new one.
If its on the sd card somewhere, PLEASE be as specific with the file path as possible because I'm as literate about these things as a dead frog.
Al that I am sure of is rooting my Epic is easy as long as I watch qbkikng videos and whoever made cwm recovery is a friggin genius
Nandroid backups only work with the same model phone. I.e. you have a nandroid backup before flashing on an Epic, the flashing bricks it so you get a new Epic, you can restore the backup as long as you're rooted. Also the file path using CWM recovery is /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup

Thanks, I know it only works with the same model phone, that makes sense to me I got my second replacement Epic in 6 days yesterday and had to root it to make it work the first one wouldn't connect to the network so it was defective according to Spring and this one basically was a good as a dead cat before root, now it runs like a champ but Titanium backup dumped 70% of my apps, so luckily for me I remembered make a nandroid backup only thing is now that everything is updated, I want to make a NEW backup just in case.
I see you already got your answer, but please next time post questions in Q&A section not development, Thanks!
Kenny, mind moving this when you get a sec?!?!
