[Q] Updates? - Windows Phone 7 General

I'm really interested in the Dell Venue Pro, as I'm sure others are too. The thing that concerns me is their two Android devices, the Aero and Streak shipped with Android 1.5/1.6. This shows that Dell isn't really that interested in provided us with the latest and greatest in OSes and updates.
My question is this.. Who decides whether or not my new device will get WP7 updates and how soon? Carrier, manufacturer, or Microsoft?

from top to bottom priority if your phone is locked to a network.
1. carrier
2. microsoft
if your phone is unlocked like mine
then microsoft handles the updates alone.
even if your phone is locked, the carrier would release the update ASAP and tell microsoft to update all it's customers on wp7 unlike android since update is created by microsoft and carrier just has to test it on their hardware.

So Dell wont have any say in this, unlike on Android?

nope. even if dell makes dell hubs on wp7 and it's buggy or whatever, dell would only need to release the update in their own hub marketplace itself.
e.g almost all hTC models have this bug in their new wp7 phones in the hTC hub. hTC has pulled the app from their hub marketplace and will release the app again in their hub marketplace again once it's fixed.
so the main OS and main wp7 marketplace are separate to carrier/hardware hubs and their marketplace inside their hub.
and the nice thing is that anyone can uninstall carrier/hardware bloatware from their phone if they wish to even if their phone is network locked.

That's a relief. Thanks!

Only if it's unbranded. Weve unlocked Vodafone devices here in Belgium.

The one I get will most likely be locked by T-Mobile.

Carriers can delay WP7 updates!

Well it seems we have another broken promise here: "The truth about Windows Phone 7, software updates, and carriers’ ability to block those updates"
Hey Microsoft, where did remain the equal user experience on every WP7 device in the world? Why are you allowing every OEM/carrier to ruin (again) the whole thing? Really, WTF you're doing?
Actually, this has been discussed at length in mutliple threads.
The carriers can block OTA updates, but updates through Zune come directly from MS and are therefor unblockable - which is the way base OS updates arrive.
Wrong. They can block the WiFi/Zune updates as well. Just read the article. So for example, it's very likely that all of those, who bought a phone now (they are available only through carriers) won't get the major update at January.
There is still debate over this.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-20022445-75.html
All will be reveled after the first update.
But, if the carrier can block it, can't you just unlock the phone and then install the update via Zune?

Stick in a different sim card and then they can't block the update via Zune
Cutting through the FUD about Windows Phone updates

and they can only block the update for that round, not indefinitely. if they request a block at one round, the next will include that previous update. so really if MS update it frequently, the most you'll ever be behind is the last update.
Exactly and I am hoping by then we will have custom ROMs
..............................
Camn down mate
There will be a solution to this all. If not then there are some really good ppl out here who will have custom roms.
Miss Information
I actually think this is all a giant furphy.
Currently on all aussie HTC W7 phones you can remove HTC and Carrier apps if you don't want them (I'm guessing this would be the same world wide) I have done this on my mozart a few times now. The HTC hub is (in my opinion) is crap and on my phone it is gone. Same with the telstra stuff.
While that is allowed, and given the current MS criteria of having the phones locked down the way the appear to be I doubt anyone will be able to control updates except MS themselves.
my 2 cents worth and you won't convince me otherwise.

The info comes from Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president and director of Windows Phone Program Management. So if he doesn’t know how the updates would be rolled up, I can't imagine who knows
Another good article on the topic: "Has Microsoft put Windows Phone 7 updates in the hands of the carriers?"

Belfiore knows very well but the ZDNet guy didn't properly interpret Belfiore's statement. Did you read janemanno1's post in the first page?

Would love to hear the logic that led you to this conclusion.
Even if a carrier could block an update, I don't think they would do so without very good reason because it would cause a lot of negative press. If all WP7 users received, for instance, cut 'n' paste in January, but Orange blocked the update, all the fools on Orange would be incensed as their non-Orange mates taunted them mercilessly. Big no-no.
It's probably a minor concession Microsoft made to carriers and it might be there just to give them time to protest to Microsoft about, for instance, an update that includes tethering or VOIP.
I wouldn't get my knickers in a twist over it if I were you. Just buy an unlocked phone and switch carriers if they block an update you want. If you lock yourself into a two year contract then I'm afraid you'll just have to suck it up.
Question
Did any one received an update for WP7???
It's end of January already!!!!
Let me know.

No one has received one yet, because it hasn't been released yet. In fact, Microsoft never confirmed an update was coming in January. The closest they got was having the web page for the patch have "january-update" in the URL, which they soon changed. Apparently the page itself said "January Update" but I don't recall ever seeing that, and even if they did, it has since been replaced. It's still coming.

AT&T Mango Release News 9/27 Rollout for Most.

AT&T begins Mango update program September 27th. Full details.
For all of you on AT&T and awaiting Mango, we have some big news for you, so grab yourself a seat, because you're hearing it here first. Looks like that earlier info about "being on time" was accurate.
We just received a series of emails exchanged between some higher ups at AT&T and an anonymous source (the source is anonymous to you, but known and verified by us). The emails give, in detail, AT&Ts plans for their Mango updates, including schedule according to device. The original emails are attached as images with all names and times redacted.
In short, here is the plan. "Starting September 27, 2011, Microsoft has approved and is planning to release a new “Mango” update to AT&T customers using..."
HTC Surround (SKU 65212)
LG Quantum (SKU 65205)
Samsung Focus (SKU 65203) [More on this below]
"A subsequent release is projected to be available for customers with the HTC HD7S (SKU 65255) in early to mid October. A subsequent advisory will be provided for the HTC HD7S after the MR update has successfully passed TA."
The update requires two steps: download new Zune software and plug in your phone.
Now the bad news. The Samsung Focus is still divided into two camps, depending on the hardware revision. Revision v1.3 will get the update on 9/27 while v1.4 will have to wait till end of October:
The Samsung team came back an provided this information about WINDOWS 7.5 for the Samsung Focus devices.
rev 1.3(Micron): Windows 7.5 update will be available through Zune on 9/27.
rev 1.4(LSI) : Update has not entered the AT&T SPE lab yet; however, Samsung is targeting for 10/17 lab entry and 10/31 TA
So there you go folks. The only thing missing from the above is the Dell Venue Pro, but we're under the impression that Dell will handle that directly. More info as it comes in. And thanks to our tipster for the excellent information and timely communication! Full emails after the break...

yeah, well, if it turns out to be true. This will prove that I was right that MS is not holding back Mango so they can roll it out to all devices/carriers/oems together as people have been saying.
So I have to wait till first or mid October since I have a hd7s

I know that AT&T isn't a "bad" company. I was an AT&T employee for 10 years. But in the wireless market, they have always been somewhat clueless about what makes good customer service.
This is a welcome surprise for me, and I can't wait until next Tuesday.
Hey, AT&T werent last (Australia's Telstra was 2nd last), so I was <i>more</i> shocked when Telstra was waiting for MS' approval to push Mango 0_o
If you de-branded, dont forget to re-brand to ensure you get the update. If you use the LG Quantum, check this link. I provided the instructions incase you forgot... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1273826
What about non-branded phones. I remember MS was saying those devices are getting updates first, so does it mean we should get it before 27/9?
This is excellent need and shows att holding true to their statement about being the first to update. Hopefully Samsungs don't run into any snags likelast time. Can't wait to finally get mango.

Is there a difference between Mango official update via Zune and the leaked ones? I have a HTC trophy and I flashed the official shipped ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254384
When will unlocked devices get Mango?

Apollo recommends HTC HD7 on hardware basis.

For all the HTC HD7 holders concerned about not getting Apollo update like myself and not ready to upgrade should read this article to calm them down;

All the first gen devices use the same base hardware profile. The only thign the HD7 has is like 64MB more RAM which shouldn't be a big deal given even second gen devices are shipping with 512...
The only thing that would stop other 1st gen devices from getting the update is the OEM or carrier refusing to license or support the new version.
Also, the post also mentions the Samsung Focus.
Seems like what has been touted on a few places lately.
All devices to get the update - only the hardware inside your device will limit the functionality you recieve.
T-Mobile doesn't even have the 8107 update pushed to these phones, I wouldn't hold my breath on Apollo...they pushed it to the Radar, and they told me to buy that instead lol.

T-Mobile USA pushed 8107 to all WP7 devices already. Why do people keep spreading these false facts. I had the official 8107 on my HD7 before I decided to go with a Full Unlocked ROM. There are others who have gotten the update too. The updates seems bugged or something though as I know the Lumia 710 has gotten the update, but when I tried updating my roommates' new 710s, it showed them as up to date.

Yeah, just saw that too, funny how I got it over a month ago & I wasn't the only one. They are also saying that the Lumia 710 hasn't gotten the update where I know people who have got it. Maybe it was some kind of bug? ::shrugs::

Actually, it just rolled out today, I'm updating as I speak, so I will retract my previous statement. As far as the Lumia 710, no update yet http://www.wpcentral.com/t-mobile-us-rolling-out-windows-phone-8107-htc-hd7-update.
I think the 1st rollout was tmobile in europe. Tmobile USA was today.
TMOUS seems to be the carrier that cares most about WP, the others sure don't.
I guess I'll un-cancel lol.

LG Quantum
HTC Surround
Dell Venue Pro
But why are some first gen devices like the HD7 and the Focus chosen over the Quantum, Surround, Dell etc to get the Apollo update? All have same specs except HD7 with extra 64 MB. So what's so special about my HD7 and the focus? And if it's about OEMs, why would HTC choose HD7 over Surround? Really want to know those reasons. Any help?

I sincerely doubt US carriers will allow Apollo updates to be pushed (even if MSFT releases them). I plan to use my first gen wp as a zune with wifi.

Do Windows Phones (starting Windows Phone 7) get free updates?

Whenever Apple releases an update for iOS, all iPhone owners can download and install the updated OS for free. Updates for Android phones work in different ways. As an owner of any Android phone you are at the mercy of hardware manufacturer (Samsung, HTC etc) to get Android update. Most Android hardware companies release a few update and most companies don't release updates at all. So, once you buy an Android 2.3 device, even though Google releases next version of Android, most likely you will have be be happy with that as there will be no update from your phone manufacturer probably. My question: Do Windows phone (starting Windows Phone version 7) owners get free OS updates like iPhone owners ?
It's more like iPhone way. Currently, your Windows Phone can have the last update released by Microsoft, but depends on your carrier. If your device was bought in a classic shop (no carrier firmware), you will have all the updates. On the contrary, the carrier could stop an update but has the obligation to do the next one.
Updates are free, in that you do not have to pay for them.
However, "official updates" are indeed carrier dependent. Meaning that if your carrier opts not to make an update available to your particular phone on your particular carrier, you cannot get the "official update"
However, as soon as an "official update" such as Mango, or even now Tango, becomes available, there are ways for you to install the update yourself, even without having to have any sort of "rooting" or "unlock."
I was worried about not being able to get the official update when it came out, after installing early on my own, and had no problems (just loaded an old backup version).
Hope this answers your question!
Hopefully this will change in the future (carrier dependent updates, not free updates). As WP is growing, they may have more leverage and bypass the carrier like apple. Not likely though, IMO
there are ways for you to install the update yourself, even without having to have any sort of "rooting" or "unlock."

Upgrade to Mango or loose the Marketplace.

Hello everyone, we might have all seen the latest news on the windowsteamblog.com.
So, I've been thinking....I know Mango was made available to all current phones so I don't really see how one shouldn't update. But what if Mango was an update that most devices couldn't get? Let’s take the Apollo update for example; incase the update comes and current devices are not able to upgrade due to some reasons whatsoever (eg: Multicore compatibility) and we get people with Mango and Apollo all in the ecosystem and then Windows Phone 9 comes and Microsoft once again wants to upgrade & improve the Marketplace so all devices should upgrade to Windows 8 or loose the Marketplace....what happens to the WP 7.5 consumers? Will we be foreced to get newer devices? It's been bothering me and thought I ask.
Sent from my HTC HD7 using Board Express
That's a very good question, However by that time I am sure we will all be coming to the end of Contracts etc and gagging for an upgrade, Enjoy the moment and try not to threat about what's around the corner.
Good but the thing is not all countries support contracts. In my country, phones are unbranded (non-carrier based) and you can imagine....they cost like hell. I bought my HTC HD7 at a price of $800 when WP came out and its currently $500 since new devices with Mango are out...so you really need to take care of your phone so it lasts till you can save again to buy another if only you can. So for us in this situation, we really need to hold onto our phone for years and wouldn't like to be ignored by the OS...would still like to receive updates and stuff.
