Gingerbread will be android version 2.3 not 3.0! - Desire General

so what do you guys think about google announcing the next version of android is 2.3 not 3.0, we all know that with version 3.0 (now honeycomb) will come with all the new ui changes, but what do you think will be included in 2.3?

gpu acceleration for the UI would be a serious performance boost - at least as far as 'feel' goes.
beyond that, bug fixes

I didn't think that Google had officially matched dev names to release numbers yet?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

to the same or lesser degree that 2.2 had on 2.1 users?

When did they announce that? And wasn't Eclair both 2.0 and 2.1?

ive read it still could be either 3.0 or 2.3 they havent really decided yet

Gingerbread is the update with the new UI. And there is nothing confirmed that Gingerbread is 2.3, just one message from some Google guy that includes '2.3' in it but not the word 'gingerbread'.
2.0 and 2.1 were both Eclair. Maybe 2.3 is still some froyo update?
Btw for the people that dont know, google has put the big Gingerbread statue in their HQ. It's close now.

sorry i should of rephrased my op better, it not official but has been leaked by numerious sources inside google and also in a faq for the webm video format the "gingerbread os version 2.3 will arrive 4Q 2010 We all knew that google was going to seperate android into 2 branches, the 2.x series for low to mid end devices, and the 3.x series for high end devices.. so maybe 2.3 and 3.0 will both be called gingerbread,

I think so too. After all maybe that's the only way they can preserve their "superiority" to both ranges,low/mid-end and high-end.Cheaper devices will be able to have the latest software while preserving a good functionality and high-end devices will be albe to show their true potential.
That's my opinion only though...

Who cares? The features matter, not the version number.
If 2.3 brings a GPU accelerated UI, that will be awesome! I also think it could have the new media player that they've shown during the Froyo announcement.

Who cares if the name is 3.0 or 2.3. We all know that we'll get 90% better performance anyway.

The last I heard, GPU power was the prime reason it wasn't done so priorly. So I'm very skeptical. If it is implemented, they may enable it only with specific tasks where it has greater power efficiency than currently.

[Q] flash player / google earth & cm6 ???

is there a workaround for getting adobe flash player on the slide with CM6 ?
what about google earth? - is there a way to run either of these apps?
The only possible way to get any sort of Flash Player on our phone right now is to use a HTC Sense ROM. Stock 2.1 and Stock 2.2 (CR_MOD) both are modified Sense as well. Keep in mind this is Flash Lite though.
nope..it has to do with the hardware of the phone..either Google or adobe needs to release support for our phones.

They don't support our hardware for a reason, it isn't as capable as armv7 devices, not on the stock 600 mhz clock at least. The faster armv7 devices can handle it just fine though. They won't spend time and money developing for phones and hardware that can hardly handle it to begin with.
but don't you think they would do it if/when we get official 2.2?

No, it has nothing to do with the android version, it has to do with the version and capability of our processor. Since most of the slides out there are used by regular end users on the stock software, unrooted, the CPU clock runs at 600 mhz max. That isn't enough to do heavy processing, compared to the faster armv7 800 mhz-1.2ghz devices. Plus, HTC has already developed a flash lite app that they include in the Slide official ROMs, so adobe sees no reason to develop it. It just won't happen. I do wonder though, since we have the leaked froyo build, if the htc flash lite could be ported to cm6 or even cm7. I remember someone tried it porting it to cm6 from 2.1 stock, and wasn't successful, but maybe now it has better chances of success. Who knows.
well that kinda makes sense but I'm not expert or anything

No HTC sense 2.1 (and 2.0) for HTC Desire

It's confirmed by Frandroid (FRENCH SITE):
No updates for older HTC smartphones
We have just had confirmation from a representative from HTC, former Sense HTC smartphones (HTC Desire Desire Desire Z and HD) will not have access to the new HTC Sense (2.1).
HTC prefers to focus on new phones in the words of the Taiwanese brand. As a reminder, HTC Sense is the custom interface from HTC that includes many features missing from the interface "pure" Android.
Nevertheless, news of Gingerbread are mostly irrelevant for smartphones HTC Sense. As a reminder, Gingerbread brings a new keyboard, a different interface, the NFC ... a lot of features built into HTC Sense.
Update: Do not confuse the version of Android (Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.2, etc.) and versions of HTC Sense (1.5 with Desire Desire 2.0 on HD and Z, and 2.1 on the new ones) .
This is the orignal link:

And the google traduction:
http://translate.google.fr/translat...ises-a-jour-pour-les-anciens-smartphones-htc/
It's not what I understood from:
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/htc...t-for-android-23-gingerbread-update-50002752/
If they are going to update to 2.3 it doesn't make much sense not to put a new version of sense on the top otherwise they will have so many different threads going off...
It's the 2.1 sense interface and not the 2.3 gingerbread update. Those features are (according to http://androidspin.com/2010/09/15/htc-announces-htcsense-com/)
Locate your device by remotely calling your phone which will allow your device to ring even if previously set on silent
If your device ever becomes lost or stolen, HTC will offer a remote lock and wipe feature
Backup your devices’ contacts, text messages, call history, data and even customization
Share and edit multimedia content shot from your phone
Using your computer, you can send messages to your lockscreen
In 2.1 you can alose add a quick button setting (and 2 or 3 others features)
What I mean is why would they push out a Gingerbread update without Sense?
If they push out a Gingerbread update it'd have to be either;
1) gingerbread no sense
2) gingerbread with old sense
3) gingerbread with new sense
if it has old sense surely it means the HTC devs will have double the amount of work to do to make sure its compatible - when DHD/DS etc. will all have similar/same hardware and different UI to manage and maintain...
Of course we'll get the new Sense if we're getting 2.4 on the Desire - be a pointless update otherwise

According to them, it will be choice 2, maybe because they want to do the same strategy than Apple: new phones have new things, older one will not have them, even if it's possible.
Hopefully http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-huashan-gingerbread-dump-with-sense/ will bring a nice new rom with Gingerbread and sense to our lives sometime soon...
A lot of work would be needed but you never know, might be soon
I personally prefer to wait for a Desire S dump but we'll see
EDIT: Taking a look at the files now, see what I can do with it
Quick look...
- No HTC apps and it has the Lanucher2.apk so no idea what going on there (EDIT: It has some HTC apps but no widgets)
- It does have the HTC wallpapers/bootanimation files, etc
- Wouldn't know where to begin to port it over so don't ask!
sounds a bit fishy?
Oh well
It's a test build so probably not complete but I'd like to see a video of it running before doing anything with it. Im sure someone will release something at some point

Think it's more likely to be option 4) gingerbread with updated (old) sense same as they did with wm update the core and slap a newer upgraded sense over the top but still not the same sense as the newer phones.

there was already a report on that - they said it should come out around 3 months after the Desire S .... and basically said that could be any time between May and September
Wouldn't Desire HD still be superior to Desire S? It makes no sense to me to put new Sense into technically inferior device.

It's already been confirmed that the Desire, Desire Z and the Desire HD will all be receiving the latest version of Sense with the Gingerbread update, in fact it's already rolling out in some places. The UK will be receiving it tomorrow, as the last country in Europe to receive it. Desire and | updates will follow shortly after.

[Q] Android 2.3 with Sense port from HTC HuaShan possible?

now that there's a 2.3 build with sense for HTC Sense leaked out there, i wonder if it's possible to port it to our devices?
Dump source:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11379272#post11379272
was hoping port a port too.. maybe it would take up to 2 months to go for an official update.. a ported version would suffice
Actually it should be possible, but since the DHD has the Adreno GPU it could result in the same little issues CM7 has. Some 3D Apps do have trouble and performance isnt really the best for everyone (different results from user to user). There are no official Gingerbread drivers out for the Adreno Chip.
But, considering how well CM7 already runs on the DHD, it should be no problem after all.
Lets just hope some talented devs can look into it and get a stable build together until the official stuff gets released by HTC.

Hope the fonts are small like the regular desire hd roms & not gigantic.

Gingerbread 2.3.4 on Desire ?

Hi,
will Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 run on HTC Desire ? The background of this question is the new discovered dataleak in 99 % of all android based smartphones.
http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/99.7_of_android_devices_vulnerable_to_data_leak/
can we expect a 2.3.4 Gingerbread Rom or ist it not possible to port it to the HTC Desire ?
Gegards,
Frank
I think there are some custom ROMS based on 2.3.4 - mainly AOSP ones at the moment I think already.
I'd like to hope that when the official HTC Desire GB rom comes down it will be running the latest 2.3.4 rather than the current TEST ROM that was leaked of 2.3.3 - but also I'd like to hope it has a slightly updated Sense UI too - but only time will tell...

You're only at risk if you use unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots. 3G is fine as are personal/work Wi-Fi so unless you're just dumb you won't be in any risk
My Desire runs fine with Cyanogen Mod 7 NB #77 which is Gingerbread 2.3.4 and there is no problem.
this thread is useless. there are already 2.3.4 roms out for the desire and hes linking to an article from a website that pretty much smears anything not apple.
The BBC have also covered the story but, again, it's just there to scare people
MIUI ROM is GB 2.3.4, for example:
MIUIXJ
Running it without probs, only FM Radio app is not there, but it will be fixed by original devs from miui China.
adamg's oxygen rom is also gingerbread 2.3.4

2.3.5 Will be official

Here's the response i got from HTC today,
"In regards to your enquiry kindly note that, yes, the update Android 2.3.5 and HTC Sense 3.0 is available for HTC Wildfire S. The exact date of release for each country is not confirmed at the moment as we work with different operators in different countries to make this release easy and fast as possible. Please soft reset the phone (take the battery out and put it back again) and then go to menu> settings> about phone> Software updates. If update is available please follow the instructions and please try to use Wi-Fi connection (recommended)."
So no need to root and other ****, just be patient.
Errr, no-one had to root or 'other ****' to get 2.3.5 ... it was an official RUU install.

I think it's normal that the 2.3.5 RUU doesn't support Chinese language and input. It's made for the European market...
I'm almost sure that they mean Gingerbread 2.3.5 + Sense 2.1 + Sense 3.0 lockscreen. It would be too good to be true to have Sense 3.0 on a "cheap" device like the WFS. However I am positive and will wait for the officialization of the update. In the meanwhile I can wait with my manually updated phone.
I wouldn't want the update by Vodafone anyway... comes with too much crap software and very small user memory available.

I think that the update from htc is actually the 2.3.5 RUU.
HTC is always behind, and I think it will be the same in this matter.
The differences between sense 2.1 and 3 are minimal (except lockscreen).

Sense 3.0? That's too good for a phone like this....
Hope they ACTUALLY add 3.0, i really don't like 2.1.
If that's true, probably we don't have any tiny chance of Ice-cream Sandwich

Judging a post by HTC Turkey on Facebook it looks like some of the new but not so new HTCs will be getting the long awaited Gingerbread 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0 update. Those smartphones will include the Desire HD, Desire S, Wildfire S (with Sense 2.1 instead) and the Incredible S. There will also be an upgrade to Honeycomb for the Flyer tablet as well as smaller updates to the Salsa and ChaCha.
Here is the full list of upgrades as well as an approximate ETA:
HTC Desire HD - Android 2.3.5 with HTC Sense 3.0 - 15 December
HTC Desire S - Android 2.3.5 with HTC Sense 3.0 - 15 December
HTC Incredible S - Android 2.3.5 with HTC Sense 3.0 - 10 December
HTC Wildfire S - Android 2.3.5 with HTC Sense 2.1 + new lockscreen - 10 December
HTC Flyer - Android 3.2 Honeycomb - December
HTC Salsa and HTC ChaCha - system update, which brings improved wireless and Twitter - December

I don't think so.HTC Explorer has Sense 3.5,and it has same specs as Wildfire S.The problem is that HTC will not spend time to bring 3.5 on a low budget phone.
The HTC Explorer has a cut-off version of Sense 3.5 as Wildfire S has a light version of Sense 3.0 (Sense 2.1 + Lock Screen 3.0). If you compare the interfaces of HTC Rhyme and HTC Explorer you will see what I mean. Still, both devices claim to have Sense 3.5... These are all just numbers in the Software information and that's all.
Personally, I prefer the Wildfire S's interface to the Explorer's one.
