Lost in the sea of searches! - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have searched for the past few days and have become lost in all the threads. I'm looking for what I believe has probably been answered numerous times but have been unable to find. I'm running my DINC with S-Off, .77HBoot, CWM 2.5.0.1 and Radio 2.05.00.6.11. I want to update to the latest radio 2.15 as well as update to .79HBoot and the latest CWM however I don't see anything on the forums on how to update HBoot or CWM. The radio thread in development explains how to do the radio, so I think I can figure that out, however the HBoot and Clockwork recovery, I cannot find threads explaining how to update. What prompted this was the new SkyRaider rom 3.3.1 needs the newer radio and HBoot to work properly. I am currently running 2.5.2 and really want to upgrade this rom. If anyone has a step by step, or can post some threads for me to research I would appreciate it.

How to update HBOOT to .92 with files by adrynalyne: HBoot How To. Scroll down to the heading of HBOOT .92 for the info.
Clockwork should flash by opening ROM Manager, at the top it says Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, if there is a newer version there it will say so. Remember to backup your system by making a nandroid backup first! When I updated to .92 HBOOT, I had to do a restore of my system. I've heard this is common, so remember to make a backup!

Cool, thats what I needed, thx bro.

Hey, no problems bro! Glad to help!

I wanted to report back that everything worked beautifully. I must stress to anyone doing this however make sure you check the MD5 data on all the files you use, as this seems to be one of the main reasons people have problems. Thanks again for all the help.

Thank you very much! I was looking for one of those hboots. Considering it's no longer necessary to have the ENG version for CM6 I want to have the latest version.

Sorry for the noob question but after I downloaded my phone can't find a program to open the file. Do I need to hook up my pc to the phone and open it with the pc? I'm just trying to figure out how to place the files on the root of my sd card so I can flash...right?
Thanks
Charles
Just place it on the root of your SD card, then power off and boot into Hboot by holding down volume down and pressing the power button. the phone will recognize the pc36img.zip file and ask you if you want to update. select yes, wait for it to complete. and then select yes when it asks you if you want to reboot.
How do you know which hboot the phone is running ? (I'm on CM)
what benefits does having a newer hboot give?
I still run eng 76.2000 and havent had any issues

I flashed to 2.10.0001 hboot today and my phone would not boot. I am running CM6 6.1.1. I was told that after flashing hboots you will have to reflash your kernel. This seems like very important info to know so I just wanted to throw it out there if anyone gets stuck in my boat. It's just a good idea in general to keep the current kernel you are using on your SD just in case. Hope this helps any issues
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
I am not sure what I did but I have been on an old version of Amon recovery. I got the urge to update to newer version and also flashed clockwork thru Rom Manager...
I went to go into recovery to Flash ....as most addicts do...and I could not get past Hboot. THANK YOU......Tried every pc36img I could find to no avail until finding these.
Hboot .76....

[Q] toast/kpkim: Need eng hboot that works w/ 3.29.651.5 rom and 2.15.00.09.01 radio

I have a rooted version OTA 3.29.651.5 (had stock 3.26, upgraded with OTA, then used UR 3.21 one-click root and gained root and permanent nand unlock, lots of thanks to the unrEVOked team for making it that easy), everything is fine, I don't really have any problems removing bloatware and doing things that root allows you, I'm not a custom rom kind of person, so I am happy keeping the rooted stock rom with the newest radio / PRL / PRI. However, I was doing some research on how to get a custom splashscreen installed with the "fastboot flash splash1 xxxxx.rgb565" command while in fastboot bootloader.
I did that, and I would get something like "send: ok, write: failed, remote: not allowed". I did some research on this, and realized it is because I don't have the extended eng fastboot commands with the 0.79.0000 fastboot (dated Aug 20, 2010). I did some more research, and used the instructions by kpkimmel from "forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=800859" (thanks for the great and clear instructions) to put 0.76 hboot with the extended ENG commands on as my bootloader (I did it through sdcard root folder and fastboot with PC36IMG.zip). As I was kind of worried about already, the phone would not boot up after I installed 0.76.2000, I assume because the new radio version I have is not compatible with 0.76.2000, the text file in the PC36IMG.zip that I used seems to refer to rom version 1.32.xxx or similar, so it must need an older radio. Well, I don't really want to downgrade the radio or prl on my phone just to get a custom boot screen. Anyway, after successfully installing 0.76.2000 (title said hboot 0.76.2000, ENG S-off), my phone would not ever go past bootloader, I could get clockworkmod recovery to work, but my nandroid restore would fail, it would say "failed loading boot image".
So from what I kinda thought about the radio or something else being incompatible with the older 0.76.2000, I just flashed the custom screen (it worked perfectly with 0.76.2000), then extracted the 0.79.0000 hboot.img (dated Aug 2010) and the text file from a 3.29 rom, put it in a new PC36IMG.zip, and flashed hboot again through bootloader, it went back to 0.79.0000 still with nand unloacked and root, and then the phone booted up just fine, back into my rooted stock 3.29 rom, didn't even have to do a nandroid restore, my phone was exactly as it was before the 0.76.2000 bootloader flash, same radio, kernal, everything, obviously now with a new splash screen, different from the black text on white background stock splash screen.
Sorry for the long expl, wanted to give everyone a background. So my question is: Can I avoid having to flash 0.76.2000 every time I want to flash a new splash screen, and have eng extended fastboot commands while maintaining a bootloader compatible with my radio and rom version? What I'm asking is, is it possible to have a 0.79 hboot version WITH the extended commands? Would anyone, maybe like toast or flipzmod, be able to make that, so there is no need to pull the sdcard several times while in hboot, switch PC36IMG.zip with different hboot versions, then go back to the original after flashing the new splash screen? This would really make things a lot simpler.
Why didn't the nandroid restore work by the way with 0.76.2000? Isn't that a bad thing if even nandroid won't get you back to where you were? I got lucky going back to the stock hboot fixed it.
Thanks
u cant nandroid restore a backup unless ur using same hboot u used when creating the nadroid restore for instance i installed cyanogenmod6 with hboot 76 i couldnt restore my fresh nandroid it kept failing till till i put the hboot back to version 93 then i could restore the nandroid since when i created the nandroid i was on hboot 93 so i had too update my hboot just to restore my nandroid
my solution is to have the diffrent versions of hboot pc136img on your sd so u can flash them on the go see thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801568
so basically if u create a nandroid with with hboot 76 and your on hboot 93 u cant restore it till ur on same hboot vresion u created it with i dont believe its something devs can change it has to do with md5 errors that dont check out prpoperly unless same hboot is used when creating nandroid hope this helps u out a bit feel free to pm me
Simply re-flash your ROM's kernel or the ROM itself, really. That fixes it. Doing a nandroid won't work. I've run into this issue a couple times and that fixed it.

If I flash an older rom, can I then use an older RUU?

I wasn't sure about the answer to this question, so I thought I'd just go to Q&A and ask. I searched and didn't find anything on this specifically. I'm a bit worried about using the latest RUU since the whole 2.02 HBoot thing (though I'm not sure if it would update older phones to that version). I was wondering if I'd be able to use the recovery to flash an early rooted rom and from there use an RUU and unroot it to that earlier version.
Sorry if that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, I'm just wondering if I can trick the RUU into letting me install an old version. A botched unrooting left me with the 0.93 hboot instead of my usual .76 eng hboot.
I don't think that this will work for ya, you need to downgrade your hboot. From my experiences by downgrading my hboot i was able to flash older ruu files.

Oh well, I'll just flash the latest PC36IMG.ZIP. I found it on the 2.02 hboot thread. It doesn't really matter, I only need to unroot this thing long enough to have Sprint accept it. It's been rebooting so much lately that I can barely use it for longer than 30 minutes. This was my last resort after wiping repeatedly, changing SD cards and other things.
just remember to flash the Unrevoked S-On tool too.

First time user of CM7... a few questions.. help!

So I'm currently running Senseless revolution 2.0 ROM on my incredible. I'm looking to try out the CM7 nightlies and I looked in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916881 and it says "Third, make sure you have updated HBOOT (.92), radio images (2.15 series). The newer seem to be working much better." Are both of those necessary to use CM7? How would I go about doing this with my current rom installed? Would I simply put everything on the root of my SD card, boot into CWM, backup my current ROM, install HBOOT, the radio and then the ROM all at once? What would be the correct way of doing this exactly.... Thanks!

cm7 has worked for some without upgrading hboot or radio......but.......if you have any issues with things not working, the first thing that will be suggested is updating hboot and radio. you can flash the rom and see if works for you or not, then decide if you need to update hboot / radio. the links to get the latest of both hboot and radio are in the cm7 thread in the dev section. you need to to one at a time.....I would do hboot first......reboot and then update the radio, if needed.

ok so hboot and the raido update will install from boot loader and not recovery. if you are running revolution 2.0 Im pretty sure you have the updated radio. but to check go to settings -> about phone -> and it should tell you under " Baseband version"
for hboot. you will need to download it from here http://dougpiston.com/?p=44 then check the M5D sum because if this is corrupt then your phone will be toast.

let me know if this helped you
Thanks! I guess I already have Hboot .92 as it came with Senseless Revolution 2.0. I'm looking at the thread for the new radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874355 but it doesn't say how to install it??
edit: nevermind, found it... thanks guys!

Same way you would hBOOT. Download the radio zip. Place it on the root of your SD card. Check the m5d sum. Astro file manager can do this for you. Then turn off the phone turn it on while holding volume down. And it should pick it up and ask you to update. But please make sure you check m5d. If the file is corrupt in any way and you try and flash it will brick the phone. And nandroid will not help.

[Q] Old spring evo 4g - unable to flash/upgrade/fix

Hey everyone,
I recently acquired an old EVO 4g, and it's old as balls, and I can't figure out how to get it to upgrade - and many of the files that I find around the internet are 404 links, so I'm somewhat stuck.
The device IS rooted (s-off) with HBOOT 2.10.0001
Firmware : 2.1-update 1
Kernel : [email protected] #1 (2.6.29)
Software number : 1.32.651.1
PRI : 1.90_003
PRL : 60687
I could care less about the data on the phone, or anything about it - but I would like to get it upgraded to at least stock 2.3.5. The device can't get OTA updates, and the main problem is every link I try to follow that leads to a pc36img.zip that I want to try is dead. All I really need is a way to get this device to a place where I can fall into one of the tracks to the many guides out there.
It's S-OFF, but there is no superuser file or rom manager, and it seems the recovery is stock. Any images I try to flash from recovery throw signature verification failed. Using the unrevoked drivers, I can ADB around in the phone without a problem, but since I received the phone in this state, I'm not sure the method that was taken to get it here (hence, do not know the steps to un-do whatever was done)
I can't find any files that I have been able to successfully flash to upgrade the system, recovery, or downgrade the hboot to .76 - my thought was to downgrade to the hboot-eng then fastboot load a recovery - but that failed since I couldn't find an active link.
So amid the sea of old information and broken links, I am adrift. Anyone help me out?
Thanks!
Try installing Smelkus recovery using this link below. There are a couple of ways to do it; just boils down to personal preference, really.

If all goes well, you can flash a custom ROM. I would then go about updating the firmware.
Another thing you could try is to run an RUU to a newer software version. You'll retain S-off, so all you would have to do is install a custom recovery and then flash a custom ROM.
Also, root and S-off are two different things.

+1 Smelkus recovery
After installing Smelkus, flash the rooted version of the current Sprint ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671395 and apply any updates for the phone's PRI and network profile. You can continue to use the Sprint ROM or flash the custom ROM of your choice. There is a wide variety of ROMs still available for the EVO 4G. You can select from the ROMs lsited at http://evo4g.roms-db.com/all-builds/ for the functional features that fill your needs. Just remember to make a nandroid backup of your current working phone firmware before flashing a new ROM and be sure the phone's battery is at least 40% charged before you begin to flash the ROM!
thanks for the tips! I'll try it out when I get a chance and report back.
SmelkusMOD Recovery is the best recovery that i have used to this date!
