Hey everyone,
I recently acquired an old EVO 4g, and it's old as balls, and I can't figure out how to get it to upgrade - and many of the files that I find around the internet are 404 links, so I'm somewhat stuck.
The device IS rooted (s-off) with HBOOT 2.10.0001
Firmware : 2.1-update 1
Kernel : [email protected] #1 (2.6.29)
Software number : 1.32.651.1
PRI : 1.90_003
PRL : 60687
I could care less about the data on the phone, or anything about it - but I would like to get it upgraded to at least stock 2.3.5. The device can't get OTA updates, and the main problem is every link I try to follow that leads to a pc36img.zip that I want to try is dead. All I really need is a way to get this device to a place where I can fall into one of the tracks to the many guides out there.
It's S-OFF, but there is no superuser file or rom manager, and it seems the recovery is stock. Any images I try to flash from recovery throw signature verification failed. Using the unrevoked drivers, I can ADB around in the phone without a problem, but since I received the phone in this state, I'm not sure the method that was taken to get it here (hence, do not know the steps to un-do whatever was done)
I can't find any files that I have been able to successfully flash to upgrade the system, recovery, or downgrade the hboot to .76 - my thought was to downgrade to the hboot-eng then fastboot load a recovery - but that failed since I couldn't find an active link.
So amid the sea of old information and broken links, I am adrift. Anyone help me out?
Thanks!
Try installing Smelkus recovery using this link below. There are a couple of ways to do it; just boils down to personal preference, really.

If all goes well, you can flash a custom ROM. I would then go about updating the firmware.
Another thing you could try is to run an RUU to a newer software version. You'll retain S-off, so all you would have to do is install a custom recovery and then flash a custom ROM.
Also, root and S-off are two different things.

+1 Smelkus recovery
After installing Smelkus, flash the rooted version of the current Sprint ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671395 and apply any updates for the phone's PRI and network profile. You can continue to use the Sprint ROM or flash the custom ROM of your choice. There is a wide variety of ROMs still available for the EVO 4G. You can select from the ROMs lsited at http://evo4g.roms-db.com/all-builds/ for the functional features that fill your needs. Just remember to make a nandroid backup of your current working phone firmware before flashing a new ROM and be sure the phone's battery is at least 40% charged before you begin to flash the ROM!
thanks for the tips! I'll try it out when I get a chance and report back.
SmelkusMOD Recovery is the best recovery that i have used to this date!

Hi,
I am Currently running a Evo with software version 1.39.00.05.31 I didn't take the 1.47 update. I rooted/iinstall custom recovery using Unrevoked3. I want to take the OTA 1.47 so I can then apply Unrevoked 4 ever and then upgrade to 2.2 and maintain root. I downloaded the 1.47 update and created a pc36img.zip file (Used it on another evo) However when I try to flash it, it doesn't work and say something about wrong version. Wondering if anyone has the recovery.img and android.txt from 1.39.00.05.31.
Also if I can't get recovery back can I use Clockwork to apply the update that was downloaded? I would rather not restore to stock and restore all my apps and such.
Thanks

Update the radio via recovery then install unrevokedforever. Or just install unrevokedforever lol
You know your on the very first release of software for the phone right? We are all on 2.2 froyo right now where have you been? I liked 2.1 myself but the fixes alone are worth the updates

Well I'm not sure why you would want to do it that way but if your already rooted using unrevoked 3 (Not Full Root)
Then you can simply Download and apply Rooted 2.1 1.47.651.1 Rom to it or even the 2.2 3.26.651.6 (Most Recent)
But if I was you I'd use Titanium Backup to keep all your data so incase you can't use any recovery in the process at least you can restore it to any Rooted Rom or unrooted.
But to make this much simpler you need to use SimpleRoot that has Nand Unlock Option, also called 3 step Root.
This is in regards to your issue with Main Version Older Error when you tried using (PC36IMG) in bootloader.
If your gonna use SimpleRoot Make sure you have all the files included in your SD Card Otherwise PC36IMG by it self won't work.
Hope this Helps

I have an EVO that has S-OFF. I was going to try the steps listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755035
To update to the latest OTA...basically so I don't have to run an RUU and lose all of my settings. I run a fully stock ROM, just rooted and some bloatware removed. I'd like the newest ROM for the Blockbuster app and some of the fixes that people have been reporting.
There's some discussion about the current recoveries not working correctly with the 2.10 partitions. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Any information surrounding this and whether Clockwork and Amon-Ra are going to release updated official versions?
Like in evo development and its two versions you can flash and not loose root but read before you flash
Swyped from Eva running Myn's RLS4!

I guess I'm not following you. I don't want to flash one of the two in evo dev for two reasons:
1. They wipe your phone
2. Radios have to be flashed separately
I've got the OTA downloaded to my phone. I just wanted to use it in Clockwork to update my phone to the latest version. Just wondering if this will work? I know it will overwrite my recovery, but can't I just flash a new recovery later on since I have S-OFF?
The question about the recovery still remains though, like I asked in the OP.
Thanks for any help.

If you have S-OFF then yes you can flash a custom recovery after updating. Your custom recovery must be in a PC36IMG.zip and flashed through the bootloader after the update. I would not install the OTA through a custom recovery though because it contains new radio, hboot, etc. You may need to restore all the bloatware you removed so the OTA can apply all it's patch files correctly instead of giving errors and closing. You may also need to flash stock recovery before trying the OTA.
Why wouldn't you just use titanium backup to save the data you need and then update the latest all in one radio and stock rooted 3.70? It's a lot less hassle.
Hello all
I've done a little researching, sorry if i've overlooked something.....
My question is, i want to de-brand my Orange DHD, to remove all the Orange crap that comes with it, and install a stock ROM, then maybe a custom ROM after.... so o i basically get the Radio S-Off then i'm good to go?
Would i need to follow this first?
(cant post outside links yet but here is the title: [TOOL][VIDEO] One click Radio S-OFF, SimUnlock (Easy Root & S-OFF Guide)
My handset info is:
Baseband: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel: 2.6.32.21-gf3f553d
Build: 1.40.61.2
Software: Same as above
Bootloader: 0.85.0007
Thanks for any help.
I'm not an expert by any means as I'm also figuring out how to do all the flashing stuff.
But this is what I "think" you need on top of the radio s-off.
The sequence I followed is as follows
1) install visionary
2) temproot
3) permroot
4) s-off through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
5) radio s-off using your posted thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
6) install titanium backup through market and do a backup
7) install rom manager through market and backup current rom
something I did extra
8) install sms backup & restore through market and backup
I think from here, you should be ready to flash a new rom and radio
And the instruction for flashing should be on the individual thread the rom you are trying to flash.
Maybe you can update your own steps so that it can be a guide for newcomers including myself
Thanks for the reply, i am a little bit worried though as of the different kernel versions and software versions which you need to be on etc? or doesn't it matter?
AFAIK, the radio and custom rom should be compatible.
i.e.
You install a particular rom, the thread will specifically recommend which radio to install.
As for the kernel, it should be together with the rom.
So, you just need to flash the rom and radio, and you will get rom, kernel and radio unless you want specific kernel with different rom.
Then, you will just download just the kernel and flash it.
For me, the most impt this is first do a backup of your stock rom and data.
I've done it
I done the S-off and the rooting, put the 1.32 stock rom on my sd card and booted into the bootloader and installed it, running fine
Thanks guys, i might look into custom ROMS next, i do that via clockworkmod right?
I did back up the rom via cloclwork before i installed the stock ROM but i don't know if it backed up correctly, the file size is only 4meg :/
I did download the update (Android ver. 2.2 ; Software # 1.83.415.4)
but can't install it (my DHD is rooted)
it crashed when restating the phone (in visionary+ I did the "unroot now" option)
Please Help
Have you done a factory reset?
I believe you need to return your phone back to stock. Remove any modifications and restore any system apps that you may have removed. Reset S-Off back to default. You can use one of the HTC WWE updates to return the rom back to factory default but beware this will wipe all data. Have a search on the forum and you should find plenty of info on how to carry it out.
Im sure the update contents will be rolled into custom roms soon anyway so there really should not be the need to go through all this bother.
two days I'm trying to find a way to update
my software is 1.32.405.6
and for two days I'm trying to find a way to update still nothing
(this is my first android phone)
and this what I did:
I finished from Titanium Backup
then ROM Manager and CWM Recovery (it took me some time to figure what is CWM , DHD is my first Android phone)
then backing-up the system and transfer it to my hard-drive
then updating using ROM Manager
when trying to update using ROM Manager and CWM Recovery
it restarted the phone to CWM and when trying to install it got an error and aborted the installation
********
so dose that means the the only way is to reset back to factory?
and how is it done??
will it take my ENG S-on to ENG S-off?

There is a good guide here which talks through the process of rooting. It also discussed how to return to stock. You might find that you have problems with your backups if you return to stock. You need to be running as root to restore the backup with titanium. As far as I know there is no easy way to gain root with the latest update (Visionary no longer works). I had to go through the downgrade process to allow me root access.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537&highlight=stock
If you decide to keep root and wish to try a custom rom I would recomend that you follow through any bits on the above guide that you have not done yet and try Android Revolution. It has most of the HTC stuff included + some more improvements. It runs faster than stock also.

Good Luck
I use it also (revolutionHD) is has latest Android version.

I am stuck in Stock "Firmware Version 2.1-update 1" with Software Number 1.47.651.1 and even though I constantly check for OTA updates, the phone says that there are no updates for my phone.
Here is how I got here: I got my Evo 4G a few days after it came out. I was an early adopter of Unrevoked and Unrevoked Forever (S-Off). Things were great. Eventually, an OTA slipped by and forced my phone into a boot loop. I was able to use Clockwork to restore one of my backups and then avoid further OTA's.
I decided that I wanted to go stock, and get to the newest OTA. I used the RUU method to get my phone back to its stock rom. Then, the phone found two OTA updates. I thought that it probably had to update in several steps instead of jumping right to the latest update, so I just accepted the first two OTA's that it found. Unfortunately, the phone will not find any more updates and I am stuck with 2.1 (1.47.651.1).
I also noticed that when I boot into recovery, there is no "recovery" there. I see the word recovery, but when I select recovery it takes me to a red triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. I tried to download and install the 2.3.3 OTA Rom by renaming it to update.zip and putting it on my sd card, but I got some errors and it would not install.
I wonder if having S-Off has anything to do with the phone refusing to find the newest OTA updates? Or maybe I need a new radio? But if I reverted all the weay back to stock, wouldn't all of this been taken care of during the RUU method?
If anyone can help me get to the newest official version of Android, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks very much!
You need to install a recovery, I suggest amon-ra, then download a rom and flash it through recovery. Sounds like you just don't have a recovery installed
We're comin from a pure power source.
But am I unrooted now that I went back to stock with the RUU? If so, can I flash a recovery?
Thanks!
once u get to the little evo with the exclamation point, hit volume up and power at the same time. It takes u to a stock recovery. Or just flash a custom recovery as said above as a PC36IMG.zip flash a custom rom and viola! Or the other method u can do is take it to a sprint store and have THEM run the stock 2.2 RUU, get you to 2.3.3 and you should be able to update to the OFFICIAL AOS but of course as with anything stock, you run the risk of losing full root. But I doubt it because I just rooted a stock evo with the latest 4.54 OTA update just fine. hope this helps. Good luck with any way you choose to go.
Whether you are s-off or s-on doesn't matter to run the latest 4. 54 ruu. Download it and run it. U will then have latest software. Then if ur not s-off go to revolutionary.io and get s-off'ed
