So my contract will soon end, and i shall say good by to my Sprint Hero. I'm really hoping to get a new phone., namely an epic 4g or an evo 4g.
There are a few things that attract me to the evo over the Epic 4G.

There are a few things in which make me extremely nervous about the EVO...
Battery Life
Glass displacement
Rooting Process said to be hard!
Now I must ask you all this... How much battery life would one get assuming he has the evo settings as this.
Stock CPU Clock, Bluetooth off, Wifi off, gps off, 4g off, mobile data always on Off, Screen brightness around 25%, Rooted, Running CM6, launcher pro.
I'm getting around 10to 12 hours with that set up

1. Battery Life
I get about 15 hours with moderate use, longer with light use. This consists of wifi during the day streaming Pandora, ESPN radio, web browing and 3g on drives to work and at lunch time.
2. Glass displacement
No issues here
3. Rooting Process said to be hard!
Unrevoked 3.21 does all the work with 1 click root.
So you'd say battery life is less of an issue these days with the EVO? Honestly?

If you have your data on always refreshing it can be lol My wife had her phone trying to sync everything every hour so her battery kept dying by 5pm, she of course has a backup battery though. I have a usb charger at work just in case but on weekends I do carry a spare battery just in case I get crazy with the battery. Got 2 spares on ebay for 10 bucks and they hold up pretty well.

Yeah in all honesty my battery can pretty much last as much as I want it to. Depending on usage. Like in idling the phone could probably last 30+ hours, it's just all the games I play and stuff brings that down to like 12. But if for some reason you needed it to last more you could underclock a little and just use it less.
Also, the Epic was said to have same/worse battery life. It's a tough decision though. Personally I went with the Evo, and I've been glad I did because of all the activity on here for the Evo. I don't think the Epic has a root method yet for 2.2.

I'm thinking i will likely choose the evo then... I cant stand sense though so it's i'm going to root and install cm6 on it. any advice for that guys?
I have the seido battery and it's worth it. I can go two days with moderate use without needign to charge it. Im running CM6 with snap turbo with the new acerlauncher.apk
I may be in the minority here, but the Epic's screen really doesn't impress me. It is bright, but the colors really just look oversaturated, and to my eyes, it looks like a cheap trick. I prefer the EVO's screen, but that's just my preference.
Also, the Epic is much fatter, and after using an EVO for a while, the Epic's slide out keyboard feels like I'm using an old WinMo Pocket PC.

I couldn't agree more. I was looking at the fascinate yesterday and I thought it looked cheap as well. Evo has more realistic colors in my opinion.
also, cm still isn't available on a galaxy s phone.

I only use my phone moderately throughout the day, checking facebook, gmail, some texts, one or two phone calls. With a full charge at 1PM I am anywhere from 30 to 20 percent battery life when I get home from work at 11PM. That is with 4G off. With 4G on (which I don't have anymore running Cyanogen MOD) I had to put my phone on a charger by about 6PM.
Buy an EVO and a car charger. You will love it, but don't realistically expect to make it from wake to sleep on a single charge.
As for rooting, it couldn't be easier with Unrevoked 3.

I see a lot of people constantly talking about battery life on here and how they are disappointed by what they are seeing from ROMs, kernels, or the OTA release.
I'm interested to see exactly what sort of expectations people have on the lifetime of their phone.
I've been fairly cognizant of my phone's power consumption and have done a lot to ensure I understand how I use it and what effect that has on its life between charges.
I understand that a first generation phone with the largest screen, the fastest processor available, the most processor intensive camera, with animated wallpapers, synchronization to various web services, flash, and borderline experimental next-generation wireless connectivity that can tether to multiple devices. To have all that on a unit marginally larger than my old Palm Pre and roughly the same battery size (1150mAh stock) is going to come with some compromises.
I tend to overclock, ROM flash, and beat the snot out of my phone on a regular basis. Therefore, I have a super gigantic Seidio battery that I absolutely adore. I found that even before that, I was able to get my battery life under control if I controlled my phone properly, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
Did some people just get bad phones? Are some people just being unrealistic with their expectations? What goals do you think people should be setting for the lifetime of their phone between charges?
Its an honest question.
I used to get almost a week out of an old motorola flip style phone (v500 something).
Everything since then has been downhill.
I'm not under the false impression that these new phones are going to last as long as the older "dumb" phones, BUT.....Id like to be able to get through the day without charging my phone. I keep my screen about 40% brightness, I'm usually in an area with good reception, I only sync my Gmail, I've calibrated my battery, etc. The only real USE my phone gets is texting. I unplug my phone at 5am and its more than half gone by noon. Not real great IMO.
I think this will provide valuable insight as to expectations for this phone. Personally I have used smartphones since I can remember and I was bread to expect a nightly charge.
It may be unacceptable to some that we have to "mod" our phones to get reasonable battery life, but I really dont have too many complaints. Out of the box, the EVO is running a 1gz processor and powering a 4.3" display. Not to mention if you're running wifi and various apps. I think some people are just expecting too much from these phones. Look at laptops. When my dell was brand new, I could get 2-3 hours of steady use before it conked out. The battery life our phones are getting, modded or stock, isnt really that bad. If you're unwilling to do some research and easy mods or buy a spare $20 OEM battery off eBay please dont complain about it.

A nightly charge is acceptable. It's when you have to charge 2-3 times a day from moderate usage that is a little out of hand... Understandable that with heavier usage, more frequent charges would be needed.

I want to power a small village from my phone please
I want my phone to last a day. And call a typical day something like:
- l/2-1 hour talk
- 12-24 text messages
- 45 minutes - 2 hours web browsing
- 2 hours music
My iPhone 3GS would do this without a problem, my wife's iPhone 4 might do 2 days like this. The EVO just barely does this.
But.. I prefer the EVO for enough reasons I just dropped $10 for 2 extra batteries and a phone-less charger on ebay, and keep chargers in the car and at my desk, and get it plugged in for like 30 minutes somewhere during the day. I rarely use the backup batteries, but it is nice to have them.
Totally worth it for a bigger screen, 4G, more open OS.

This definitely sounds doable. If you aren't getting that out of your phone, I'd reccomend calling support. I'm going to assume your dedication has already lead you down your own troubleshooting path.
My standard was set with my BlackBerry: less than 5% discharge rate per hour under normal use, and I am happy.

okay i have alot of thoughts and questions on the htc evo battery life. first off i think the devs have done a great job with improving it but in reality we aren't there yet IMO. i mean coming from the hero after calibration and a 1750mAh battery i had what id call good battery life, even without the use of custom kernels or setcpu. even with calibration on the evo, the bottom line is the battery life sucks ass. i cannot even believe htc released a phone with such ****ty battery issues. ive even seen posts on here from people with extended batteries with crap battery life as well.
number 1 they should of shipped it with a higher capacity slimline battery. if it weren't for the devs here the phone would be unusable as i can remember the first time i bought the evo in july i had it for a week and got rid of it the battery was soo bad.
then we have battery mod scripts like calkins & the colin tweak that honestly never did much for my phone. then of course the much debated sbc mod that alot of people says created issues. my own take on it is it seems more of a visual effect or placebo than anything. yes it seems to hold a charge a bit longer but only when the phone is not in use. whats the sense of owning a phone such as great as the evo but be afraid to use it at all?
the reason i do not use sbc is because something to me doesn't seem right about the way it charges the battery. for example: my phone had 88% battery left before i flashed the sbc mod, then after reboot it was back to fully charged? how the hell can that be possible?
so im sorry for venting but sometimes i think i may look into a smaller android phone such as the optimus s or another hero. does the evo shift have these issues as well?
so now i ask for advice from the users that "claim" to get well over 24hrs battery life on stock batteries. im running myn's rls4 rom with the netarchy 4.2.2 /less havs/ no sbc kernel. if i choose to use setcpu and do not want to overclock what settings should work best? or did i hear that havs & setcpu do not play well together?
thanks for listening!
My biggest issue is that it's very inconsistent. I'm on MikFroyo 4.3. When I flashed this ROM I upgraded to all the newest radio, PRL, PRI, etc. It used the stock HTC #15 kernel and I was getting OUTSTANDING battery for the first 5-7 days. Then, literally overnight, my phone started losing 10% of its battery per hour while NOT IN USE. And, no, it wasn't the Up vs. Awake issue, I hadn't installed any new apps, none of that. So I "downgraded" PRI to 1.77 and STILL, absolutely horrible battery life. I've tried different kernels but nothing works. I can take my phone off the charger at 5am and be down to 15% battery by noon with LIGHT use. Signal strength isn't an issue either. It's just frustrating. I understand that these phones have large displays and constantly multi-task but you would think HTC would realize that these phones are going to be used by "power users" and plan ahead for it. But I suppose if our battery wasn't an issue we would just find something else to ***** about all day, lol.

+1. I get better battery life with my EVO running MIUI than I did on my Motorola Renegade clamshell phone, and probably twice the life I got with my Hero. I replace my battery with a charged one every morning and I generally still have 50-60% life left when I do that. I have gone 2 full days on a charge. I did not get this kind of battery life out of any sense ROM I have tried.
You say, MIUI, I say CM6 or 7. All depends on what you like, really in regards to ROM.
I can say that I do get better battery life on CM vs something like Myn's. My phone does stay on for more than 24hrs with somewhat light usage. That means the display is on for about 2-2:30hrs in that time while I browse the web or look at videos, but the rest of that time, it has all of its radios on and is constantly pulling down updates for Twitter, FB, NYT, and Yahoo Mail.
I haven't had any sudden drops in battery life, but if I did, I'd probably buy a new OEM or near-OEM quality battery to replace it.
My BB Tour used to do far less and yes, it lasted longer, like days without a charge, but it didn't have all this stuff going on. So yeah, comparing this large bar phone with its huge display, on-going processes is sorta unfair.
That said, I do wish it lasted 2 or 3 days with light usage.

Coming from Myns rls 5 to cm7 both with stock kernels I could honestly say I see better battery life wit no OC on the CM7 rom. From my experience using warm 2.2 roms, I could get nearly 40 hours on the phone but in order for that to happen I have to barely use it. Which basically means its pointless. I mean if that's the case I might as well leave the phone turned off. Not to mention how much of your time that gets consumed searching for the perfect kernel to fit to your liking and phone.
I really do think the battery sucks on the evo but there are ways and roms to make it manageable. Sooner or later the new duel core & Tegra processors will be here soon, so bad battery life should be a thing of the past. Only because the CPU wont work so hard while sharing the strain we put on are phones. Lets just all sit tight and let technology take its coarse.

+1 for MIUI. This is the best battery life I've ever seen. To the point where I stopped carrying my charger around. I still keep and extra battery just in case but I haven't had to use it in weeks. I get through the day easily on a full charge and I have no problem charging mine at night...I've been doing that since back in the day with flip phones. I thought everyone charged overnight while sleeping or is that not the norm?
Its also a norm for me if it needed it. Another reason I think MIUI and CM Roms are good on battery life is because ultimately they don't have 4g. I've been on the same charge all day and I still got some juice left to flash the new nightly for cm7. U gotta love it.
r0cky.Da.3v0.SU.-
Doesn't CM have 4G now? Even when I was on Sense roms I rarely ever used the 4G though. Same here though, I took my phone off the charger around 3pm, got home from work around 4am and still had plenty of juice left to back up, flash the new MIUI rom, and set it up. Seems like battery is getting better with every new release. No complaints here.
I don't get 24 hours battery, but I don't lose any battery while idle on a sense rom either. I'm on mikfroyo, with net's 4.3.1 cfs havs nosbc kernel. I'm using setcpu, and my screen off profile is 245 min and max smartass. With the screen off I barely lose any battery at all. I charge my phone periodically throughout the day, but I've gone 10+ hours off charger (with moderate usage, but no gaming or anything like that) and still had a good 40% battery left.

Honestly anything over eight hours is descent especially if u still have juice left over. Even with that said and speaking for all the cm users, I can honestly say that netarchy kernels are definitely not needed using this rom. Even though its a great kernel, That would be kinda suicidal towards my battery life.

I'm thinking I can get a good full day + of heavy use before charge is needed.

See, I really don't like the whole money hungry apple. If people are getting good battery life, and an overall good experience, then I want this phone. I have a screen that is messed up, and I love the Galaxy line.
Why would anyone go back to using an iphone with those small ass screens after using the Epic touch, plus all the customization of the android os. Apple makes good products but the iphone screen is too small and not being able to customize the phone is a big turn off

Please answer if you got the Epic Touch.
Battery Life
I bought mine at 10:30am (even made an appointment and reserved the phone) from Sprint upgrading from the Epic 4g - Walked out of the store at about ~40%. Took it home and put it on the charger until about 11:45 when I had to leave for work. While at home I connected it to my Wifi - began downloading all my apps connected to Spotify to sync just under 2,000 songs then went to work with about ~50% battery. Unfortunately where I work is an old hospital so my phone is roaming practically the minute I walk in the door. Needless to say normally if I forget to put Spotify in offline mode my Epic 4g my phone is dead in 20 minutes and the phone is basically a PDA as I get 0 signal. Basically I forgot to turn off spotify - I was AMAZINGLY impressed as #1 It continued to roam and sync. Very slowly I might add but it still continued to sync meaning I HAD SIGNAL! #2 I realized this about 6 hours later and it still had 22% battery life! I don't know about others but coming from the Epic 4g to the Epic 4g Touch the battery life is PHENOMENAL!

5 hours off a full charge. Screen has been off maybe 30 minutes. Played about an hour of games, been on xda for a good hour, downloaded a ton of apps, 2 phone calls totalling 30 minutes, tons of text, facebook a good half hour, and alot of data heavy stuff. Down to 69%. So basically extremelly heavy use could net me 15 hours. My evo woulda been dead by now on my 1800 battery. This is just nuts. Ive never seen a smartphone run like this. I woulda been happy at 8 hours with this usage.
Best comparison i have is on my evo one hour of drag racing premium would destroy a full charge. I just played about 40 minutes and lost 10%.

I got it with about 60% battery (at 11am when I left Best Buy), used it all day texting/short calls/downloading apps and it got me home at 6pm with battery left.

If I didn't turn on my EVO it would look the same as well. Once I would turn it on though, that's when the game changed!
What I would like to see is people show their screen on time and how much battery they have left. That is the stat I am most interested in........I am thinking it is averaging about 3 hours of total screen on time...
I love the people that claim like 7 hours on screen time even with the EVO 3D. Do people really think this is believable with stock batteries that ship with the device.

I will post a screenshot tomorrow of my battery life, but I get terrible coverage at school, so that will factor into my results b/c the phone is (obviously) CDMA... thats the one thing i really cant stand about CDMA phones lol

Yeah, bad signal....might as well forget about that stat. lol
So if a GSM phone has bad signal, it won't be affected like a CDMA phone? If so, wonder why that is.
Here is the thread detailing the known battery glitch
There is no fix for the sprint version yet. Someone made a kernel for the international version that fixes it.
I returned my phone over this issue and I'm waiting for it to be patched before I can use it
Yesterday I kept my 4G radio on all day, sent texts, made a few calls, surfed the web, streamed Slacker and Spotify, checked FB and twitter, and hit 20% after 16 hours.
My stats for today.
Phone of charger for 13 hours and 47 minutes.
Screen on time - 3 hours 25 minutes.
Battery left - 9%
Used wi-fi, 4g, and 3g throughout the day. Screen brigtness set to 40%.
I'm getting a good solid 10-14 hours of use. I'll get 6-8 hrs if I'm pretty much using the phone nonstop.
Have you guys tried the battery calibration app from the market? A fellow xda member made it and it resets your battery scripts (needs root). I just did it this morning before I unplugged the phone since I flashed a new rom.
Battery life on this phone is so much better than the evo 4g. Stock battery life on this phone rivals my evo 4g with 3500mAh extended battery!
I am fortunate enough to have the phones I want. I have an S4, HTC One among others.
Been using the S4 since it came out on Verizon and decided to give the HTC One a try. I always liked HTC.
So far I really like the phone, love the HTC keyboard, love the display and camera. I am also very surprised by how much I like beats, either speaker or Bluetooth. I also like the simplicity of sense when compared to touchwiz. As a Google music user, I love the lock screen controls, it matches the whole look of the phone and I wish I had something like this on the S4.
I really don't care about the materials used to make the phone but I do have to say, the One looks amazing. The more I look at it, the more I like, however, the S4 feels better in the hands, has a more comfortable grip.
I really don't like BlinkFeed and I miss sense's weather widget on 3rd party launchers. Dislike not having a brightness slider in the notification bar, hate not changing my battery.
I really miss some features of the S4 wish the S4 had some features available on the One.
By far, the best HTC phone I ever used but I don't think this phone is better or worse than the S4.

Some stuff that bothers me, based on my usage.
Battery life isn't as good as the S4, I expected this however because I knew this phone had a smaller battery. But I feel the drop in battery life is worse than I expected. What makes this more annoying is the fact that charging this device TAKES FOREVER. If I am using it as a GPS device, whether it be Waze or Google maps. I can't even get it to charge. It will either hold it's charge or loose some. This is with a 2amp car charger.
Other than that, I love the slightly smaller screen. 4.7" is a good stopping point. haha. And the speakers on this thing, wow. It's not insanely louder than my S4, but the clarity is insane for a phone. Love it.
Display is superior than that of the S4 as well. I don't know that I will want AMOLED screens anymore.
Sense trumps Touchwiz, I think we all knew that. I almost want to say I prefer this look than Stock AOSP.
Now if only I could get root, so I can remove the Verizon bloat.

I am kinda surprised at all the comments about this having bad battery life. I got 6 hours of screen on time (100% wifi with 20% brightness) a couple days ago: http://i44.tinypic.com/24b7vw1.png
Yesterday, I got down to about 50% (100% LTE with 20% brightness) with nearly 3 hours of screen on time. The phone was unplugged at 8am and plugged in around 10pm at 50%. My previous phone (Droid Bionic) would be LUCKY to receive 3 hours of screen on time on a single charge whether it be on wifi, 3G, or LTE.
Today, I am currently at 60% (100% LTE with 20% brightness) with 2.15 hours screen on time and the phone has been unplugged since 8am.:http://i43.tinypic.com/x1f37n.png
Seems pretty good to me!
I am not sure what the deal is with the battery hate either.
I go all day and still have ~30% to spare at bed time.
Nothing compares to the HTC Rezound I guess.
I get amazing battery life as well.
Also, I totally disagree that the S4 feels better in the hand. To me, the One is just... Awesome. The feel of the metal vs the cheap plastic feel of the S4. Blah.
Good post though. Always nice to hear others opinions.

Oh man. That fantastic cool sensation you receive when you pick up your HTC One in the morning is just amazing, right?
Having both the S4 and the HTC one, the HTC just blows the S4 away IMHO.
I love it.
The feel, the build quality, and HTC Sense.
I also feel the S4 will never get boot loader unlock while the htc one has a much greater chance of getting unlock and hopefully even S-OFF.
I also personally feel that the htc one feel WAY better in hand than the s4.
I do feel like I can toss my S4 around though and not worry while I don't feel the same with the htc one, I may have to actually get a case
i find the battery to be good, it comes off the charger at 5:30 in the morning and i normally have around 20% left when i go to bed around 11. But i'm used to the galaxy nexus which couldn't last half a day.
I have been swapping between the One and S4 since Thursday...the S4 trumps the One in in screen size...I definitely prefer 5 over 4.7 in most situations but not all haha...expandable memory and removable battery are nice to have but non-factors to me...I'm rooted and been on a custom ROM since day 1, so u have never experienced the supposed "lag" from the stock software...also I never accepted the OTA, so I can flash all I want
The one is like a jewel though. I never used cases on any my phones, but as soon as I held the One in the store, a case was an instant cop. Speakers on the One are amazing, the clarity is ridiculous. Battery life is OK, I have about 65% on my S4 after work compared to 50% on my One. The build of the one is nice, but is a non-factor to me...
I like both phones though, I feel bad leaving my S4 at home when I use my One for the day and vice versa...

haha I feel the same way, never use a case, but the htc one I just feel I might have to. not sure yet, need more time with it.
I feel bad even leaving my s3 behind, that phone is still killer haha.
S4 will never get unlocked, but at least the htc one I have faith, I will be selling s4 after 6 month period of no boot loader unlock, i give it 6 months then move on.
I guess we can add "battery life" to the common issues of death and taxes Reality is comparing each other's battery life has too many variables to compare, so seems surprising folks keep attempting it. Huge weighted factors combined equals no practical way to compare except your own use with a previous device.
Network area strength in relation to where using the device
Apps used and duration
Data radios on in weak area when not being used
Social apps and any background updating
Display brightness
Streaming cloud data (big battery drain compared to local content)
What other radios being used or on at time
Animations in UI
Wallpapers (live ones are not battery friendly)
Seriously, how on earth can anyone compare within 50% and be accurate (at even 50%)? Answer is only if a fluke will you be anywhere close to relative.
Sorry, double post. Having issues with xda app running like puke.
Hey my friend has the Verizon one and her battery is terrible compared to my att one her GPS is shown as always on solid blue bar on the power menu in history. Thing is it's off and even location is disabled can anyone help me I have no idea what's causing it

I absolutely love the speakers. I have a phone mount on my bike and it was okay with my old Dinc (it has some felt pads so there's about a quarter inch of space to bounce the sound back and amplify it a bit) but not only do those front speakers sound perfect me but I get turned heads from pedestrians
Even goofier, I put it in the sink while I'm showering in the morning, and can even hear the bass that way.
As for battery life, went out riding this morning to take pictures at a parade, was still at 80% when I got home. As a medical student I'm almost always at home or at school or in the hospital, thus always on wifi, so this thing is great. Looking at the battery graph the only rapid drops come when the 4G signal is weak.
