Hey guys,
Picked up a desire yesterday and its great, though I'm having some issues with sms. I notice I don't receive any texts until I send a text first, then I'll receive 2 or 3 texts, timestamped in the past, up to an hour ago!
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks.
edit: unrooted on o2
i get a similar problem, i know i should have received a text message but it doeant show up for hours.
unrooted on tmobile uk
Most likely when your phone is connected over GPRS the text don't come through till you disconnect, used to happen on my N95.
So if my phone is operating in GPRS mode, until it decides it doesn't need the internet anymore and disconnects, it won't retrieve texts... right. So any workarounds or fixes for this?
Prety much, after I use GPRS I just made a call and during or after the call my text came in.
Been getting this all day, are people really just dealing with this or is it only a few people that have this issue?
I am having another problem... on T-mobile, my phone won't download MMS messages. It will just say Download error, General Network Failure... After it expired (3days) , I was sent a link to the T-mobile website, where I am able to see it for 14 days.
Another problem that I am having, the phone is struggling sending long text messages... 4 or 5 normal lenght messages 500-600 characters... I am using the Text App provided with the phone.
I have a problem that I dont think is an actual problem I think its just how the phone works, and tbh its a bit rubbish.
If you dont have signal when you hit send (im my office at work I only get signal on a little square of the desk) the phone says "message not sent". Sometime when it gets signal it will send the message, but if it doesnt get signal quick enough it seems to just give up sending.... a bit lame really....
I'm going to post a message up with the T-mobile UK MMS settings so people in future can find it on search. Have a look in 5 mins.
JAmes.
I've got the same issue with my HTC Desire.
My operator is a Belgium one, namely Mobistar.
I've got the impression that when i open the sms box, i start seeing the messages. Don't know if it's the communication that goes wrong, or the 'throughput' in the phone (screen, alerting...).
After installing (and using of course) chompSMS, this problem is gone... yipppie...
Just been speaking to a guy from work who in the same situation as me, hes on orange, im on t-mobile, and basically, about 1 in every 10 messages sent, doesnt send, or some send twice etc...
Iv just installed a new rom and rooted, and if anything my issues are getting worse.
As i text a lot, this is rather annoying and i now it not just me!
So question is , is it a software issue or hardware?
and can it be fixed, or helped?
many of my messages are only sent half since i have my desire.....
I get the same. I kinda thought it was because I flashed with a stock ROM instead of the Orange one but when HTC sent back from repair with the Orange ROM it did the same bloody thing!
It only happens when I text Vodafone or O2. Orange, Virgin, 3 etc. are fine.
To be honest I think it's a network issue. Either that or your phone is in a weak 3g area, and as you are sending the text, it is changing from hsdpa, to 3g etc. That might cause it to double send, or fail.
Try setting it to 2g only and test it.

Yeah he's rite its prob ur signal, i get it when im on one bar hsdpa rather than, 4 bar gprs lol also data affects txt msgs, it sometimes happens when my fone is sending or receving data
if its signal why does it happen on my tmobile phone, and my friends orange phone???
I turn 3g off most of the time, makes no difference , still messes up.
Both networks share the same masts don't they? If you are both in the same office and connected to the same mast that would explain it. Also this thread only has people complaining from tmob, and orange. I'd say that is a pointer. I'm on O2 and have never had this problem. I also don't remember seeing any other threads on the same issue.
I'm by no means saying this isn't an issue for you, but I'd be looking more at the network than the handset. Have you rang Tmob and asked them what might be up?
For me, this issue is related to spesific contacts. When I text some of my contacts, I always get an error message. I have reentered their number in phonebook, but it does not help.
This is rather annoying, as one of the contacts is my wife...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Not a network issue. It also happens on Vodafone. I don't have so many messagee broken as you to but one out of eight is not sent. I think it desires problem.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yep same on my unlocked unbranded desire on 3 uk getting pissed off with it
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Im on orange generic non-branded phone with bog standard Sence ROM, I noticed I get this and as I have notice will all phones it only tends to happen if im sending a text at the same time I receive it, Of course actually getting it to resend is a bugger! and normally requires a battery pull, Im used to it these days but
Has anyone who is having problems tried a different messaging application, e.g Handcent?
Regards,
Dave
I've posted all of this before and there are loads of threads on this topic already
If you uninstall chomp/handcent (or any third party messaging app - even the HTC sense one) and use 'messages' instead this problem goes away.
Like you, I would get send failed/multiple messages received quite often, but since using the default app i've now sent 1, 127 messages without 1 problem I used to get this all of the time and this is what has cured it for me
1) uninstall any messaging software you have downloaded from the market
2) download sms unread count and sms popup from the market
3) put the sms unread count widget on the homescreen
4) configure sms popup to your liking
5) send messages to your heart's content
This uses the default 'messages' app rather than anything else and works perfectly
For me this happened continually, regardless of if the phone had just been hard reset and only had the stock message app.
In my case it was an issue with a local mast and the switching between WCDMA and GSM signal.
The issue went, as some other people have said, when I switched the phone to GSM only - keep in mind just turning Mobile data OFF isn't the same thing, you must go into settings and select 'GSM only'.
Give it a try and see if the issue remains.
There does seem to be several causes for the same issue so what works for me / someone else may not work for everyone

This was part of my problem too as my signal at home constantly moves between 3G and E, however, the method I posted above has fixed this too

Same issue for me one contact can sms me but every time i try to reply it fails other contacts seem to work just fine.
Sorry but how do you uninstall the sense messaging app?
This is defiantly a problem with the desire not network. I've never had this problem before with any of my phones. but since got the desire it happens a lot. it seems to be when I try to send multiple texts very quickly. plz stop blaming the network it didn't happen when I had an iPhone so how do you explain that.
I also have an issue sending multiple sms. My Desire is on Vodafone, unrooted.
Whether I use the default messaging app or Chompsms, if I try to send a message to multiple people it immediately fails to most of the recipients.
The phone will give me repeated warnings (vibration/failed msg reports) again and again, until it has managed to send the sms to all recipients. It will generally complete the request eventually, but in the process it's thrashing my battery down as I have to keep checking if the new notification is a warning or in fact an sms that I have received from someone else.
This behaviour is absolutely AWFUL, and although I used to forward on jokes that I received to a list of about 20 people several times a day, I just cannot do it any more. The same action using the same sim in my old Dream completes fine without a hiccup.
how do you uninstall the htc sense messaging app?
do you just mount /system and remove the Mms.apk from the App folder?
will this still mean that the default messaging app is not removed?
UPDATE: I've found a fix for this issue - AWESOME!
Just go to the Android Market and install the SMS Time Fix app by Matt Precious.
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-mattprecious-smsfix-pAFq.aspx
It works perfectly, and updates the time stamp on all messages to relfect PHONE time and not network time. HINT: Make sure the "Last Resort" option is checked in the settings and offset is set to zero. This little app now makes the Evo Messages app usable. Finally...
Hope this is helpful info
So, I've been reading and experiencing several issues with SMS timestamps on the Evo 4G.
It seems there are three distinct issues with SMS timestamps on the the Evo and I believe they all have the same root cause.
Issue 1: When roaming texts are received with the wrong time stamp, offset by several hours (typically 4 or 5 hours off). This causes them to not be threaded in the conversation correctly. Very annoying.
Issue 2: When receiving SMS messages on any network (Sprint or roaming), the time stamp is off by an hour. The result is the same as Issue 1, but a less extreme example.
Issue 3: When texting back and forth in quick succession, SMS messages are not logged in the order in which they are received, and received text messages ALWAYS appear before sent text messages if they are sent during the same minute, regardless of which one was actually sent first. This is also very annoying.
I believe the root cause is that the native Sense UI messaging app is using the timestamp of the tower of each SMS rather than using the time stored on the phone. To prove this, if you use Handcent and set it to use "phone time" and ignore the tower time, it works perfectly. The thing is that I don't want to use Handcent and I want to use the native app. Is there a setting that can be tweaked to fix this? Has anyone talked to HTC or Sprint about the issue and is a fix in the works?
For such a major problem, I am surprised more people haven't come forward. It's a pretty significant bug...
Thanks,
Matt_TX.

Trying updating your Profile and PRL.
if that doesn't fix it, dial #2
I also have noticed issue #1. I even called Sprint to ask about it and they referred me to a 3rd party app in the marketplace to fix the timestamp.
I have been using Handcent ever since to get around the issue.

Its the tower issue mentioned at the top of this topic. Updating your PRL, (Preferred Roaming Location), is usually helpful when you are traveling and lose signal, this will help catch another carriers tower or at least one a bit closer, also, updating your Profile, (Data profile), only will refresh from your device the settings matching your NAI (ID address) with your carrier and refresh your data settings...ie > HCM/SPS>OMA, these tactics are unnecessary, and you can do both with a quick power cycle. The best thing for timestamp correction is to use your phone time as the stamps source & to make sure only to use for future time dated messages. As for dialing *2 or #2 as in this thread, it will get you no where with the issue, they will only refresh your device in their system, in this case meaning Sprint, you can do the same, unless, of course you are running specific roms which clear Carrier IQ, you may then run in to some trouble with those device self updaters, but as mentioned earlier a power cycle will do the same all at once.
The Time Stamp Fix, from the Market works just fine
Does this fix work for when you have your phone off or in Airplane mode? I hate getting my text messages when I turn my phone back on are they are all timestamped to when I turned my phone back on not to when they were actually sent.
thank god i saw this, i have a vzw prl and my timestamp is always 4 hours in the future. works great.
Oddly my sms timestamp is fine on aosp roms, just on sense it is off...
Hi
I am having a problem with my Desire at the moment, regarding SMS messages.
I am currently in a 2G area, which is very sketchy at the best of times, and I seem to be having trouble receiving SMS messages.
Sometimes if I am on my phone using a 2G data connection, any text messages I receive during this time will not appear on my phone until I have either sent an outgoing text or made / received a phone call. Then I could get loads at once, as my phone has not gave them to me during the data connection, or even after I have finished actively using the data connection (APN still turned on though).
I currently have CM Nightly 09102010 with baseband version 32.47.00.32U_5.10.05.23.
Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening and get my text messages when they are sent, and not hours later?
Thanks
Stewart
No-one?
Doesn't anyone else experience this?
It sounds like a network problem, I had the same thing happen with older phones, not with my Desire though.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Backstory: last 3 weeks, I've noticed that some text messages I've been sending haven't been going through (without the "resend" notification), and haven't been receiving some of them as well. About 3-5 texts a week that I don't get and about the same amount that people don't get from me so not a big deal, just annoying.
Just got off the phone with Tech Support at T-MO. Went up to the 3rd level, via flow chart the tech support person determined that some app or software I'm running is causing a corruption that's messing up my mms/sms.
I've been running ILWT for quite sometime as my stable rom, but have switched between virtuous quattro ICS, HTCClay's Rom, CM7 RC's over that period of time. Each time doing a superwipe as well as the clockworkmod wipe. The problem hasn't gone away or changed with the different roms, and it's getting frustrating.
Automatically, T-mo attributes this to rooting my device, and I could care less if they replace my phone.
Has anyone had this problem before? If so, did/how did you solve it?
Temporary fix for anyone having this problem. In handcent, turn on both delivery reports and handcent delivery reports. When your text sends successfully, a green dot with a check mark in it appears next to it, if it doesn't a yellow dot appears. At least you'll know when your messages aren't really going through.
Might be a long shot.. but have you tried to take a log cat during the time that it happens? start log cat, send it a text, and send a text, may be tedious though since you'll have to repeat till you get that rare chance that it happens... What are you doing when you don't receive the text? Have you tried Ghostly SMS?
I have this same issue. It usually happens to me when I am in an area with low signal. I have learned to live with it.
T-Mobile customer service has become fairly unhelpful lately. It usually takes me a few calls to get what I need (last time they did not have my phone registered on the network for data access, though it is in my plan, and it took me 4 calls to get that straightened out.) I would not expect much from them.
Have you noticed the messages do not send when you are in a specific area or signal strength?
Naturally, now that I spent 2 days trying to logcat it, I haven't had the failure. Called t-mo yesterday and got my upgrade pushed up a month because of all my problems. Getting a Galaxy S2 on tuesday.

I have also noticed that if my battery is low and I am in a fringe area this happens to me, the message will show draft and when I charge and am in a better area it sends with no problem.

It may be memory related. As mentioned, Ghostly SMS is helpfull to fix this for recieving message. But for sending message I don't have any idea.. just to enable confirmation messages
