Solution for "Low on Space" notification found!!! - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT - I'm still getting low space now at 339MB free...I've never gotten it this low before though. Wonder what the issue is now?
So I've been a victim of this problem like many people and I did something counter-intuitive that ended up finding the solution. I remembered I never had a problem before Froyo and how people had this issue at varying storage levels. Taking a wild guess, I moved any and ALL apps that were on the SD card back to the phone.
Yes makes no sense right? Well guess what, it works!! It seems the Froyo build we have on our phones (I'm running Stock 2.2) has some nasty bug in App2SD that causes this issue. Want proof?
I was always getting the error at around 430-450MB free recently. Randomly of course.
Now? after moving all SD apps back to phone I'm down to 345MB with no issue. I even installed Fennec (was always a hassle before) straight on phone and ran it without getting the notification!!!
Hallelujah - this issue was pissing me off but I'm glad there's a solution that's this simple.
I recommend the following steps:
1. Make sure you aren't getting the low on space notification now
2. Go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> SD Card tab
3. GO into any and each app you have on SD card and hit Move to Phone
4. Verify the SD card tab is empty
You should be good to go. Enjoy!

So I found the problem according to Root Explorer the /data/data directory where apps store data is only sized to 150MB. I currently have 132 used and 17MB free. meanwhile the /data/app directory is what the phone reports which for me is 345. So basically I can continue installing apps as long as they don't use up the space in /data/data

How i got rid of that damn annoyance was i just downloaded cachemate and that seeemed to do it. I have cachemate do a clear daily and i haven't seen that little symbol since.

Bingo?!

Wow... this is the first I've heard of it and it makes sense... great find! It makes getting the darn "low space" notification easier to take knowing WHAT was causing it (not the lack of space on the 748MB internal which frustrated many of us, just the 150MB partition)...
Now, how do you move stuff from data/data or increase the partition of data/data....

Actually, it appears more to do with displacement. I have tried several roms on both 2.1 and 2.2 and started fresh with all of them.
The ceiling appears to be about 500mb total. It seems to not matter where the weight of apps is. Example with 500mb of apps:
1. 380mb on device and 120mb of apps on sd = low on space
2. 500mb on device and 0mb on sd = low on space
Displacement also explains why the "low on space" error tends to happen at about 500mb on 2.1, since no apps2sd to displace the total, but the ceiling "moved" downward on 2.2 (displacement due to apps2sd).
Apps2sd is a placebo on the Incredible and to make matters worse, you can not even use the 748mb it supposed to have even without apps2sd.
Almost seems like 512mb was allocated, even though the OS shows 748 in the firmware. I think the 748 is as fake as apps2sd is on the Incredible.
Data downloads for games like Quake, Nova and Let's Golf are not a problem, since not part of the contained and installed apk- data downloaded to sd is treated as external data and not part of the total size of the app in Android.

What we need is a way to increase the size of the data/data partition, even if it means taking it from general pool of available RAM. I'm at 15.9 MB free and if it dips below 15 I get the message. 133.10 MB used, 15.9 MB free, I'm running out of room fast.

Reviving this. It's definitely /data/data.15mb or less, low space error every time. There must be some way to specify a larger partition for /data/data?

I'm finally getting around to applying the November OTA and I was just about to start a thread asking if it fixed this...guess not

I used to have this problem all the time until I deleted Google Earth. Not 100% sure this is the fix but I haven't gotten the message since.

I don't even have Google earth installed and I get the error. Google earth probably caches a lot of info to /data/data. Anyone can verify this issue easily if you are getting the error. Get root explorer, go into /data/data and you will see that you have less than 15 MB of the 150 MB partition available. As soon as you get below 15 MB it gives the error. Go into applications and delete the data of a couple apps, get that number above 15 and *poof*, error goes away.

Wow, thank you for this! I went through every app and deleted all of the data over a megabyte, and now I have 30 MB left in data/data. The error is gone, but I where is the rest of the 120 MB in data/data? I would like to delete more so I can install some more apps (some apps just really fill up the data/data folder for some reason).

I had this issue BAD when I first got my phone. Had to keep resetting my phone to factory. Couldn't figure hat the issue was. I have plenty of space left, only a couple apps installed. Wasn't allowed to install more apps from the Marketplace or anything as my phone thought it was out of space.
Found out the stock Mail client was sucking up over 120MB of space and had hit the limit the phone would allow. Stopped using the stock Mail app and got MailDroid (free version from Marketplace). Never had that issue again!!

What we need is for someone to tell us how to change the partition size, OR how to make /data/data part of the same partition apps install to.

What I would like is a way to move them to the sdcard...I've tried moving the application, but it doesn't move it from the /data/data directory. I really would like a way to move these off to the sdcard or like has been suggested to repartition the space.
In the meantime, I've uninstalled Google Earth on my phone as that and the other top app on here, I really don't use. Some of the others, such as HTC facebook... I might just remove that account and just uninstall the app... Facebook app takes care of it.
Here's the worst offenders on my phone and the command to run if you're interested:

If you're rooted try out beta app NotEnoughSpace (nexus.zteo.com/projects/beta/). It's specifically designed to address the data/data space limitation.

Thanks! That app was extremely helpful!

Agreed, very helpful app. Doesn't quite solve the problem on its own, moving .lib files or some of the other real space hogs breaks apps, but moving databases doesn't seem to cause issues so far... I freed up a few megs.
Where the app really came in handy was showing me which apps were eating up all that space.... Gameloft games HANDS DOWN are the biggest trouble makers, averaging 5-10 megs in /data/data PER GAME. I uninstalled two games and freed up 20 megs

Definitely.

In all of my searching, this has been one of the few threads to get to the heart of the matter. Thank you all for that! It seems like most other Incredible owners are continually battling this notification by deleting programs, moving programs TO the SD card (if only they knew), and other temporary/indirect fixes.
I have some more questions, because I would like to upgrade to the HTC Thunderbolt if HTC has properly addressed the issue:
1. Has HTC admitted that this is a problem yet, and are they trying to fix it?
2. Are any of the other HTC phones afflicted with this ridiculous issue?
3. After the HTC Thunderbolt is unveiled on Thursday at CES, should we be able to tell from the specs whether or not it will be affected?

diamond main storage problems...

iv seen many ROMS show free storage as 50 mb but what baffles me is what they shows as how much main memory really is... example many newer builds shows as max main memory as + - 90 mb or close thus the titanium 6.5 endup using half of that and remaini9ng 40 50 mb is not enough if i then install tf3d 2.1 tachi and other stuff say R33 theme. and ill endup at 2 to 4 mb only and annoying warnings.
now if i see many builds thats includs tf3d 2.1 still ends up at 40 50 mb free how come? when it still shows 90 mb or so main memory.
but then few like benko's, boggysoft's, Don Salary's ROM shows 130 mb main memory storage and then it uses half of it giving more then half of that free. benko's even 100+ with tf3d.
why im asking many good newer builds like 23071 when used from many cookers, shows less then 100 mb max storage to start from and all are clean titaniums only, thes doesnt work for my uses.
i got tired about thinking about the main storage space, so i installed the clean version of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=553844.
At the moment i have 135mb free storage space on the main storage.
u didnt get my point... thats exactly what im asking why this benko's ROM have so much space left when it has tf3d 2.1 + a lot of stuff, and why a clean titanium only ROM doesnt?

Insufficient Memory Problem (Just rooted)

Hello, I am a total noob and could not find a similar problem listed. I just rooted mt3g slide and can't install more apps due to insufficient memory. Seems I have 416mb dedicated to ram and very little left for use to install apps. I moved as many apps as I could to the sd card yet the amount of space I have is really low. I am running CM6.1. Any help would be appreciated and thank you.
Are you using DarkTremor's apps2ext or Froyo's built in apps to sd feature?
I'm using the built in feature of froyo. I don't have any issues moving the apps just not enough room to install new ones.

Open termnial emulator and type the following as it appears:
su

And paste the output here. It should show the sizes of your different partitions, although if you are still s-on these should be normal. Try clearing your app caches and stuff, how many apps do you have installed anyway?

That shouldn't give you low space, but it could I suppose. You have 148 mb for memory, I have 320 or something, since I repartitioned my phone. Since you have less than half the space I do, and I have 159 app elements, (77 user apps). That gives me about 80 mb of free space. I suggest you hop over to this thread to repartition your phone. If you are running cm6 or cm7, just follow the 140mb system 1.5 mb cache scheme, it gives you BOATLOADS of room for user apps, as you can probably gather by the fact that I have 77 user apps.

Thanks. This worked out really well. Have CM7 RC1 running with tons of space. Did have to play around with the cache setting - I'm using 140mb system 20mb cache. Thanks again!

[Q] Ram Leak?

Can someone clear up something im tryna figure out? The rhodium has 288 mb of ram right? I was wondering why my phone says max ram is 185 and only about 90 free ram left with all programs closed. On different roms it would say 136 free with all programs closed. In xandroid it would slowly decrease as if its leaking to nowhere even when i close all programs. Is this normal for android or does my windows build effect the ram in android?
To clarify my question, im asking why is it so low in winmo and is it normal? Also is it at a normal level in android and does winmo's reading of ram affect xandroid? Thanks
Nobody knows? Well could somebody tell me what their max ram says and is it normal? Mine says 186 with 90 free
I am using the stock AT&T rom from this past August. I show max ram as 187 and typically have about 92 megs after a soft reset. I have gotten it as high as a little over a hundred depending upon what I run at startup. That extra RAM under the 187 is being used by the OS and by HTC. Sense is a real memory hog but if you are at 90 I am guessing you have Sense turned off. The Start menu uses 10 mega itself.
Thank You! All I wanted to know lol. So mine is normal phew. I use titanium energy rom. Didn't like sense ui or touchflo3d

What the*#*# LOW memory issue with avail Ram vs total ram??

After closing out 29 apps with ram manager, im yielding 1.05gb out of 1.78gb total,
Im literally watching the 1.05 fluctuate to 1.06 1.10 .1.12 back to 1.05
This phone I mean is it that much more packed with system apps/data vs where I remember every other s3 and note 2 I owned had like 650-750mb used out of a total 1.78 available even after closing all apps and clearing ram.
And that was even with BLOATWARE.
I bring this up cause im getting a Low Memory notification out of nowhere?!

After closing out 29 apps with ram manager, im yielding 1.05gb out of 1.78gb total,
Im literally watching the 1.05 fluctuate to 1.06 1.10 .1.12 back to 1.05
This phone I mean is it that much more packed with system apps/data vs where I remember every other s3 and note 2 I owned had like 650-750mb used out of a total 1.78 available even after closing all apps and clearing ram.

low memory as in RAM or low memory as in storage.
if its storage im having the same problem.
If its RAM, use something like rom toolboxes task manager to see whats running. im only using between 700-800 mb of ram, without clearing it
first off... android was designed to use Memory in much the same way linux does, (memory that isnt being used is wasted memory). Task killers actually cause more harm then good... they send a SIGKILL instead of SIGTERM. Its along the same lines as shutting your computer down every day vs just yanking the power cord out...

My only guess in regards to the warning would be a malicious [side-loaded] app trying to run an exploit... or killing running processes constantly has caused a memory leak somewhere via corrupted database/config file... or there is a bug somewhere if you are running a custom rom.
Just let the system handle your memory... it was designed [from the ground up] to be incredibly good at this.

Low memory has nothing to do with how large or small the rom is or how many apps you have in the system/app folder.
Think of memory like this, a computer can have as little as 2GB of memory modules, but people want faster
computers with a lot more RAM in the memory modules which plug into the computers motherboards.
That's why a lot of people have 8 or even 16GB of memory inside their computers to make them faster.
When your talking about how many apps there are, or how large or how many megabytes a rom takes
up in space you are not thinking of it in the proper terms, think of it as "hard drive space".
If you get a larger hard drive you will have more free space for applications, games, music, videos & a lot of other things.
Bloatware also takes up space on the sdcards just like it would on a hard drive, but none of these things use any more or
less of the available memory in your phone. (RAM)
None of these things have anything to do with your low memory notifications, there is a notification in the phone
which notifies you if your low on space on your internal and external sdcards (they are like solid state hard drives).
If you are getting low memory notifications from no where, it must be some rogue apps or
app that you installed which is misbehaving and or is not 100% compatible with your phone.
I found out Why I had lowmem
Went to file manager and checked storage space...
My twrp backups were taking up 5.86gigs of internal ya Thats a Crap ton of spce to use up on nandroids ...I think its cause all my backups had backed up /system

For future reference (after hearing your fix/reply)... you were running out of storage space (where user accessible data goes), not memory (RAM).
if you keep calling the storage space memory, your gonna keep confusing the hell out of everyone.

1: it depends how many, & what type of applications you're using
2: might be a memory leak; you can check by running the "top" application from busybox.
Just copy it over to /data/local/tmp, chmod 755 & run ./busybox top
But taking into consideration the fact that the memory doesn't go down to 0, but hovers around the 2Gb mark, I would cross this one out.
3: using the RAM is the proper strategy - it's much more efficient (application opening speed, power usage) to retrieve applications from RAM instead of initializing them each time from the storage. So I wouldn't count this as an issue, but rather as "working as designed".
not 2 gigs iv gt left around 234 MB ram left.
2 Gigs free would not affect performance so much.

I almost guarantee you installed a poorly written app that is causing memory leaks. Uninstall the least reputable apps one by one until your problem is fixed. Alternatively, in case you werent already aware, you can hit the recent apps button and click the boost button in the bottom right corner (looks like a rocket). This will clear your memory and close all non essential running apps

Problem is i'm using build in process manager but it isn't cleaning more than 2 megs out of 4 GIg that should be free
recent not working ether, only restart frees all ram
this is probably some system app drain

It is likely an app that you installed that is causing the memory leak as my phone doesn't have this issue and I left many of my Asus apps enabled because I like their functionality.

Perhaps you should Factory Reset the phone and start from scratch
I suggest you install like "3C toolbox" which have a page showing what process are using which amount of RAM. (any similar App will do but I just happen to like 3C toolbox). In this case you could see which App cause the problem.
As you could see from picture I attached, Amazon Kindle used most memory (179.82M) in my case (and this is normal). This is very handy tool to finding out ill-behavior app.
