[Q] Pairing bluetooth elm327 with no code - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
i’ve bought one elm327 bluetooth adapter from Ebay, my problem seems to be that i should pair it to my HTC Desire using no code at all(blank code), this seems not to be possible since the ‘ok’ button is greyed out if i do no enter any code. I’ve tried enter ‘spacebar’ and ‘spacebar + backspace’ with no result, first one complains about wrong password, second one just gives me an error when it tries to pair.
The device i am using shows up as ‘CHX’, and the manual states i should use code ’5678′ which does not work at all.
I tried to pair to my macbook and pairing seem to work if i choose to not use any code at all, but i can’t test to see if it actually works because i can’t find any sw for os x.
Anyone have a clue what to do?
TIA
[Edit]
*Solved*
Just for the record if anyone come across the same problem with a device that identifies itself as 'CHX' the pairing code for my unit were not what the documentation stated, but instead 6789.
Discovered this after trying all logical codes i could think of.

Thank you!!!

The same 6789 worked for me!
Thanks!

Thanks! My bluetooth dongle got here today and I tried it out and couldn't get it paired for the life of me, but 6789 did the trick. Going to have to write that puppy down.

Thank´s for the tip, i was beginning to think my new unit was defective.
You have just saved my day.

yeah the more we get this info out there the less people will be like us, thinking we got a defective unit from ebay!!
6789 worked a treat for me too...

ufff strugled to find it in my car just few minutes ago...
tnx to xda dev everything solved...
you rock guys...

Bah, I got mine today but 6789 does not work
nor does 0000, 1234 and about a million others I have tried.
got mine from here

Try 6789 or 7890

And if you're got it paired but still can't "connect" - some cars need to be fired up and not just key turned to accessory mode.
BMW - Year 2000.

Well 6789 worked after about the 300th attempt.
Doing my head in. Eventually gave me some error message about not connecting properly and resorting to default something...any it worked.
I had tried my old HTC Hero but that simply does not even see the device.
I don't think these things are at all well made but it was cheap.

Hi!
I bought Elm327 a few days ago.
When I try to find it with Htc Desire bluetooth, it doesn't apper in the list.
And so I can't pair these two
However, when I used it with my computer it was fine!
Any idea why this happens?

Hi, I have same problem like lina_k I can pair ELM327 with LG P500 (android), with Mio A501 (windows mobile 5.0), but with T5388i - HTC Touch Diamond 2 clone (windows mobile 6.5) I can't see ELM327 device. Bluetooth is ok, because I use bluetooth handsfree. Can anyone help? Thanks.

i'd love to buy one, somehow my car isn't supported.
vw golf mk5 tdi (CAN BUS),

thanks to this thread for letting me know the 6789 passcode for my cheap ebay obdII reader.

It's nice to know that it works for you.

6789 worked for me too, just got in from work to find the dongle waiting, now to charge phone up and put some fuel in the car lol

I got the same unit as you from ebay.. The pairing code appears to be 1234, but running on a mac, so far, I have not gotten it to work. It ID's as an ODBII bluetooth device and functions as an additional serial port. I am trying software from h t t p://w w w.yhasi . com called movi, but am about to give up and switch to windows mode to make sure it really functions.
(Since i am a new poster, i cant post the url correctly)

This thread saved me as well. I tried 0000 and 1234 while repeatedly telling my friend how no device ever uses codes other than those. Thanks!

Thank you! Cd that came with the dongle was broken, and 0000 or 1234 which.usually have worked with other devices, didn't work with this one.

Bluetooth pairing process is different, 6.0 vs. 6.1

The device is Holux GPSlim 236. The phone is Hermes. The phone will pair without question on a 6.0 rom, does not matter who cooked it.
It will specifically not pair with 6.1 roms.
I can see the device when scanning for bluetooth devices, i can choose it, it asks me for passcode, but will not accept the "0000" as the passcode. (tried hardware and software keyboards). IF i type in a passcode OTHER than "0000", it appears to pair, i can see the spp slave service and select it, but once the gps software tries to talk with it, it asks to pair again.
Something is definitely different in the pairing process between 6.0 and 6.1.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Also see thread about it here from the Himelaya:

Thanks,
Rock
Did you select it as a serial port? You have to do this after you pair the device with the phone!
I am not familar with gps units, does it have a pairing mode like a headset? I know with my Plantronics headset, if I let my phone discover it without the headset being in pairing mode, the phone says it pairs with it, but it really doesn't, so I put it in pair mode then turn on bluetooth on my phone and pair up as normal(0000 passkey) and all works fine.
I have exactly the same GPS unit and have no problem pairing it with the probably 15+ WM6.1 roms I have tried.
Try leaving the battery out of the 236 slim for a few minutes and see if that helps. (can't remember is there is another way to reset it)
Bluetooth Pairing with 6.1
In the latest PC Pro magazine in the UK, there is an article on WM 6.1. It says:
"There's another neat feature in WM 6.1, namely that when you try to pair the phone with something like a GPS dongle or hands-free kit that has a fixed PIN, the operating system will cycle through a set of common codes (0000, 1234, 8888 and so on) to try to find the right one."
It goes on to say that there is the potential to get locked out of the pairing if it goes wrong.
I have to say that I have not had any problems pairing with my GPS unit and my car kit, using a number of 6.1 ROMs. Indeed I have seen no evidence of the above software routine trying to pair for me. Possibly, that routine will only appear in the production ROMs, rather than the development ones which we use on XDA Developers.
I had issues with the same device on some roms. I eventually changed BT drivers from WM6 and all went back to normal.
On some WM6.1 roms things went OK though.
Try not using any password when you try and pair it manually.
If it asks would you like to pair your device automatically select no and do it manually.
I was having this problem but WM6.1 does not require a bluetooth passcode for most devices.

I reverted back to the 6.0 and it pairs without issue. I am thinking that alot of these cookers do not pay much attention to the development of bluetooth in some of their roms. Its not like I changed something on the GPS, so something must have happened with the software.... Still investigating. I hope it works on schaps new rom.

this method paired my jabra automatically, it didnt even ask if i wanted to do it auto, i juck clicked "pair" and there it was.
When pairing the holux 236 on the other hand, it would ask for a passcode, then reject it if you put in the correct code of "0000". If you canceled it, it would appear in the connected devices list!!, but still ask to pair once the gps application tries to connect. VERY jacked up.

Did that article describe any way of disabling that feature? That functionality could easily trick a simple bluetooth device if it is not expecting such a rampage of codes...

Wam, which rom are you using now that it works with? id like to download and try it. The 5 or so ive tried did not work.
I power cycle the device without any change in pairing succession.

bluetooth problems?

Anyone else having bluetooth problems or is this operator error?
I can switch bluetooth on, make my handset visible, pair with other devices and receive files from other handsets, however when I try to send anything, I can't connect to paired devices and bluetooth hangs meaning I have to switch my handset off and on.
I was using bluetooh last night and all was ok
but unlike my last phone c902 the bluetooth is on a timer then turns off visibility
Working fine for me. Paired up my bluetooth headset and will still be working hours later even if I haven't interacted between them.
It's strange, devices show as paired but not connected and I can't make them connect.
Have been able to use BT for file transfer between my Desire and laptop and HD2. Also connected to my Plantronics BT headset. I think you need to have an appropriate BT driver for some devices like BT keyboards.
I too am having minor issues.
The wife's hands free kit (Parrot CK3000 evo) in the car supports voice dialling by sending contacts to it and then recording a tag which is associated with the contact. This way the kit can do the voice dialling for handsets that don't support it.
For some reason the Desire refuses to send contacts to the hands free kit claiming it doesn't support the correct bluetooth profiles. This obviously isn't the case as all the other phones we have tried work perfectly with the CK3000.
Only a minor issue, as in my car which has the CK3300 everything works fine (including syncing the phonebook to the car kit). It's more of a problem for the wife though, as she wants to upgrade to the Desire on Saturday when her contract is up for renewal but at the minute won't be able to voice dial from the car.
Dae.
Strange. I'll try connceting to my laptop later.
I too am having difficulty sending files over bluetooth. I can accept files fine, from any source, yet cannot send from my HTC Desire. First the notification says complete, but 0 files sent. Then going inside it shows it has failed. And then clicking it and retrying shows Unknown file. What's going on??
Tried sending to two mobile phones, and a Windows 7 laptop. Easily works the other way around. Also, sometimes I can't turn my bluetooth off properly, it just crashes the chip while turning off and can't turn it on or off until I reboot. Thought it might be Advanced Task Killer, but tried the same thing immediately after a reboot and still can't send files. Any ideas?
still no closer to solving this, I think it may be going back tomorrow.
I'm also having problems...
I have the Parrot CK3200 LS-COLOR and it connects to the phone ok, or vice versa and then it always falls over when trying to sync the contacts... It shows my facebook profile pic and then it fails.
If I dial a contact through the phone, or receive a call, it comes out fine through the speakers.
So I'm wondering if it's something to do with the way the the desire handles contacts.
Sorry if there's been a resolution to this, I did search first
me to also having the same problems. spent 4 hours on google last night and still no closer.
Weird as it might sound, I had no issues connectiong to car stereo. But when I tried to pair it with friends mobile, SonyEricsson c902 - it crashed!
I was trying to send a picture file I have downloaded using bluetooth.
Also, can anyone tell me how to send a mp3 file I have downloaded off the internet to another mobile using bluetooth?
Thanks
Have you enabled FTP under Bluetooth advanced settings? I have no problem transfering files to and from PC or other mobile phone. Also make sure the device is dicroverable and paired.
I had a similar problem which I wrote to HTC about: I paired and connected the Desire with my bluetooth car head unit and it works fine for phone & audio, but it will not auto connect each time I get in the car and I have to go through the pairing process and enter a code each time. Voice dialling also doesn't work. My previous handset (Touch HD) connected automatically if the bluetooth was on so I don't think it's a problem with the head unit. Someone suggested it might be due to an old bluetooth protocol on the head unit (I'd like to avoid having to replace it if possible).
i managed to send a file to another htc desire today, last time i tried, i admit i didn't enable the ftp service, however I could not send via bluetooth to a nokia n96 but to be fair, my desire probably just didn't want anything to do with it . but on a serious note I cant seem to get it to send to my windows 7 x64 disto.

take that back .. apart from the N96 joke.. reason windows was not accepting was because avast anti virus was blocking it.

Pairing Desire with Parrot CK3100 bluetooth issues

I'm having trouble pairing my Desire my with Parrot bluetooth car kit. Keeps saying pairing failed on the phone, which is set to discoverable. I've tried 0000 and 1234 as the codes and neither seem to work. (Can't remember using a code for the iphone) I have also cleared all paired devices on the parrot to start from scratch and no luck
any ideas?
Just managed to fix this, and for anyone having issues the reason it wasnt pairing/accepting the 1234 code was that I was holding the letters to input those numbers, switched the keyboard to numbers, input it, and it paired first time..
confirmed: when it pops up to enter the bluetooth code, change the keypad to numbers and type the 1234. It will pair immediately.
not sure where is the bug on HTC or Parrot side... but at least we have a workaround

slightly odd isn't it! at least there's a way to do it!
There is no bug, the keypad simply shows the location of the numeric characters on the alpha keys for when you do switch to the numeric/symbol pad. I'm presuming you had it on alpha when entering numbers. My 3100 connected no problem.

Say what ?
When you press and hold an alpha key, say "R", the number 4 is displayed in green, tap it and it enters the number "4" into the input box.
HTC Desire + Parrot 3100 and 3300 + SatNav
Hi
Was wondering if anyone who has the Desire and a parrot carkit has tried any satnav apps with it? I have and the results are a odd! First of all the instructions are not routed through the car stereo which they were with previous winmo devices (this is not a big problem for me tho) however they ARE routed trhough the car stereoWith NDrive and Sygic Mobile Maps ONLY when IN A CALL!!! which really IS a problem since you can not hear a thing the caller says during the voice instructions it is that loud!! Any ideas how I can stop the app using the bluetooth connection for instructions when in a call?
It seems totally the wrong way round.. voice instructions through the phone speaker when not in a call and through the car when in a call
i'm also wondering this.. best to start a new thread i think.

Hi, i'm also having difficulty paring my devices. I note your comments regarding using the correct keyboard. I'm only presented with a numeric keyboard and i've tried everying to get a different one so i can try what was suggested above for paring.
Any help anyone can provide me with this would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I just found on another forum, that you have to delete other old paired devices from Parot CK3100 in some cases to pair with a new phones.
Try this and let us know.

Bluetooth not alive when phone is locked?

All,
I have this small issue with my HTC Desire and the Parrot CK3000 Evolution. Until now, everything works perfectly (calling, sending contacts, voice dialing, ending calls,...)
However I have one small issue. When I enter my car, and my phone is locked, the Desire will not pair with the Parrot. From the moment I activate the screen, pairing is done within a few seconds. I already tried to leave it there for half an hour, no pairing, touched the screen, pairing within a few seconds.
It looks to me like the bluetooth is not active / alive when the phone is locked (or in sleep). From the moment the pairing is done, everything works fine, also when the phone is back in lock / sleep.
Anybody has anything similar or has a solution for this? I searched the market for some kind of Bluetooth-keep-alive application, but could not really find it...
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Speedygerre
Small bump, nobody any idea for a solution or somekind of workaround / app?

I have a similar situation with my Audi A5 (factory BT kit).
It will connect when the phone is locked (screen off etc) but it can take anything from 1 to 10 minutes before it does connect.
Like yourself, my Desire connects immediately if the phone is not locked.
Strangely, it appears to work OK in my Mazda MX-5 which has a Kenwood DNX8220BT system (Bluetooth, SatNav, Ipod, coffee maker etc) - and the Bluetooth is a Parrot system. Having said that, I haven't used the MX-5 much since I got my Desire so it might not be a representative sample.
There is definitely something amiss though.
I have a Parrot CK 3100, and whilst I am happy to report that I do not have the same problem as you, I did have a problem syncing my contacts.
Check out this site, and download the software to udate to the latest firmware. You will need a laptop with either built in bluetooth, or a seperate bluetooth dongle.
http://www.parrot.com/uk/support/onlinehelpguides
I updated the firmware on mine, and now my contacts sync properly.
There is a good chance that updating could fix your connection problem as well.
Sorry forgot to add, that updating the kit really is a doddle, but their software is Windows 32bit ONLY and definitely no MAC!
Thans pergolesi, I hope your suggestion workshop, I will try it when I have some time one of the next days.
However I still think it has something to do with the Desire, since syncing workshop perfectly when Desire is not locked...

I don't know about the Bluetooth but I know my wifi deactivates after about 5 minutes when it's locked even though I have it set to never turn off. Maybe the Bluetooth is doing the same.
Perhaps not much help, but I sometimes play music from my Desire on my car headunit using Bluetooth streaming, and that continues to work fine when the screen goes off and the phone is locked. It also still responds to commands from the headunit (skip, pause, etc).
Once it's connected, everything works OK for me as well, it just is the connecting moment which apparently does not always work

Can I ask what year your A5 is? I've got a 2010 A3 and BT doesn't work properly with my Desire I can get it to pair, but then it will disconnect a few minutes later and the only way to reconnect seems to be to unpair/repair or switch the car off/on. When it IS working it can make calls, etc. fine - but I just can't get it to stay connected I tried my Audi dealer but they just said it's not on the Audi list and there's no update to support it, so interested to hear you got it working on your A5.

My A5 is a 2008 model with SatNav and therefore MMI High. The Desire paired straight away with no problems and both the car and the phone remember each other - it just takes awhile sometimes for one or the other to realise it and connect.
I'm pretty certain that it is the phone that has the problem as I had no such problems with several Sony Ericsson phones previously.

Thanks - interesting. I wonder how many different BT stacks Audi run - I was hoping they'd share some common code and therefore be updated quickly but it sounds like this isn't the case given that it's working fine on your A5. Thanks for the info though!

sync contacts with car (audi a5)

hi,
i made i bluetooth pairing between my desire and my car. unfortunatelly it has synced my facebook contacts, too, so i have a lot of double accounts listet in my car. how can i turn off syncing facebook accounts to my car, because they have almost all only email addresses, and i don't want to write emails in my car.
How did you manage to sync your Desire? I have an A6 (2006 model) and I cannot get a pairing. I have read that Android does not support the correct rSAP bluetooth protocol, so pairing in theory should not be possible. Is yours a new car, or does Audi (US) install different software?
I am in the UK and have 2006 Audi A6, Desire syncs perfectly with Bluetooth in the car.

That's very encouraging! Any tips on how you got it to work? Can you possibly describe the sequence you used to get it paired up - for instance did you have to clear the car phone book menmory, or any stuff like that? Thanks in advance.
2008 B8 A4 as well, and connects like a charm...
Did nothing special, except enable discover mode on desire, and search for phone in the MMI...
Is you MMI updated completely?
2009 Q7 and contacts, call lists etc sync fine. Just set it up by browsing for the MMI on the phone within 1 minute of powering up the MMI.
One problem though, the Desire can take several minutes to re-connect if it's not on (ie screen on) when the MMI is next enabled. If it is on it connects at once.
My wifes Nokia connects at once despite being in standby. Anyone else seen this and have a fix?
Cheers

In terms of connecting, I can't add much more - on the phone search for Bluetooth devices, and you then are talked through the pairing.
Yes I have the same quirk that phone pairs immediately if the screen is on, if the screen is off there can be either a delayed connection or no connection at all
I can pair and use it as a regular handset... (Audi A4 B8 2008) On my MMI it's showing the phone icon and the signal icon. What I'm looking for is the SIM icon, which means that rSAP is working and that the roof antenna took over the phone antenna.
With the SIM icon (rSAP connected) you have sms notification appearing on the MMI, you can even read them on the screen..
Do you guys have this SIM icon appearing?
I don't think my 2006 Audi A6 MMI has that functionality. If you have a fixed phone in the car, you can read SMS, but not I think with any paired phone?
I think my problem may be the security code - it doesn't respond to 0000 nor 1234, so I suspect I'll have to get a dealer to extract the code for me. My phone is recognising the Audi "handset" but won't pair with it.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the code without having to visit a dealer?
On my 2009 A6 there is an option to change the security code: select Tel, Setup on the car AV system then change the code to whatever you wish.
first pairing with the car should happen within a few minutes of the car being switched on, I can't remember whether it's two or five.
Hope this helps

I agree with Andrew, you set the Bluetooth pairing code in the MMI system - you can change it to whatever you like
I seem to recall that I had to change PIN to get it to pair with my new phone, but as said above you can do this through the MMI Phone Settings (one of the few things you can do )
Watch the time out though on the MMI BT I think it might even be as short as a minute!
Thanks for all the replies - you have to have the old code to allow you to change to a new one, and it's the old one that I think is holding everything up. It's a low priority at the moment, but I'll get round to asking a dealer to sort it out for me. then I can try again. Good to know that it does work though!
