Hi all,
sorry if this has already been answered somehow, but how in the name of the Lord is this possible? Why is it that the Samsung phone application does not search in my address book also the LAST name of my contacts, but only the FIRST name?!?
I really fon't get it, why is it so difficult to make the search look in the LAST name field as well. It already checks the FIRST name, as well as the phone numbers fields, so why not the LAST name as well?
Can anyone answer to me, eventually give me a solution as well? And I mean not suggestions to use 1dial etc. I know about those ones..
Sorry if I missed something, don't start to throw rocks at me, I'm just very frustrated.
thanks all.
dont know if I understand what you want, but you can change the display settings in your Contacts (Menu > More > Settings > Order of display name and change to Last Name First Name), and then you can T9 search based on last name and phone number.

thanks a lot, this is what i meant. funny thing is that, in my case, even if i select order by last name, in the Phone application it still does not select persons from contacts based on last name field.
but anyway I wanted to be able to do the search based on all these fields, just like the HTC dialer, if you know. i guess that is not possible after all...
Hi
I'm on JM1, and the last name search works just fine on my phone. Maybe you just have to wait a while for the phone to index the contact list.

im on JPK and it is not working, but even if it had been working, would still not have been sattisfied. I would like smth similar to HTC dialer. I don't see why would Samsung create such a stupid way of searching in Contacts list.
Not to mention that it would be useful to search in last dialed list as well, just in case you have dialed a number, not saved it and need it later and you only remember it started with 0722xxx, for example. HTC dialer had that as well.
Try StarContact, t9 search with nice large buttons, searches first and last name, can even search company name. I use it all the time, but especially when I can't remember someone's name but can remember who they work for.

I clicked on all options and menus but couldn't find anything giving you the choice to arrange contacts by first name rather than last.
I just can't believe there is no such option, is there anyway to make this work or should I just learn everyone's last name from now on.
Another surprise was that the alarm doesn't work when the phone is switched off
Are these Windows Mobile issues or HTC, I never had a mobile phone before not being able to do the above.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.
Scroll to the bottom of the person's contact card and select "More". It'll open up the WinMo Contact information screen (rather than HTC's). From here there is an option to "File as", select the one that has the first name out front. Lather, rinse...
Windows Mobile defaults to "Last,First" , and this is the only fix I can think of. As for changing the default, I've never found an option for it (although there may be a registry entry SOMEWHERE.
Terribly sorry if you have to do this for all of your contacts - I hope your list isn't toooo big.

Finally!!! Thank you that worked great!!!
I have the same frustration and created my own program to fix the contacts, even allowing for your own custom formats and using the Company Name field. I hope you find it helpful!

I would like to have my Contacts ordered by Last Name. From the Contact manager it's possible to change Display Name from "Firstname Lastname" to "Lastname, Firstname". That is exactly what I'm looking for. But to do so I should do it with each Contact separately! Crazy job for more then 600 contacts.
I was told that RCMixHD or AuraxTSenseHD have this issue fixed. I don't know how,but I think there is posibility to change Display Name for all Contacts.
I wondering if anyone could help me and create fix just to go through whole Contact database to change Display Name to Lastname, Firstname order?
On DeFrost I choose menu.. display options..and change "view contact name as". Sort by is here too

Moved to Q&A as not development.
Please do not make new threads in development for questions.
What is DeFrost? Is it something from new (developers) ROMs? I was not clear - I would like to stay on official 2.2. Is it possible to run DeFrost or something similar on official ROM?
added in few hours
Well, I've found that DeFrost is quite famous ROM here with different Contact Manager. Does anyone know, if it's possible to use part of the code to solve my problem (change display name to Lastname, Firstname for all contacts?)
Folks,
I need to have 2 mobile numbers in my contact for the same person.
It seems in HTC Desire is not possible. i'm using LeeDrOiD HD V3.3.3-Port-R5.
Is it possible to replace the People app with something else which support 2 or more mobil number in a contact ?
I know i can enable this if the contact is saved on google contact, but i do not want to use Google contact. Thank you.
why are you so complicated? are you syncing with outlook or something?
if not i would say you just use one of the other options...
go to contacts, edit contact, click on new, than on the white button near the number and maybe you try the "Second Number" i dont know if it serves your needs
but if someof my contact has a second number it has always a reason, so i put it to privat or work or car dunno ....
maybe i helped you deciding
Hi crendot,
Yes i tried put the second mobile number as other number such as 'work' or 'fax'.
It's just a matter of convenience.
Does anybody has a better solution ? Thanks.
Contacts - edit - add number - change fax / home what ever to mobile... put the number in....
If you can't do that... change to another rom
if its so important for you i have a other solution
its a workaround and not realy neat but it does its job
make a new contact with the mobilenumber you want, set it like you want and than go to the other contact where "mobile" is already in use.
just go at the top to the chain, to combine/link them together, here go to all contact, select the one you just made and tada both have mobile
best solution i can offer
have a nice day
is it really so complex add 2 mobile numbers in the same contact? at the moment im on cm, but even on sense rom u can do that simply..
@BigMrB
I can't do that. Do you know which rom that allows me to do that ?
@andQlimax
sense rom do not allow you to add 2 mobile number under the same contact.
@crendot
yes it's useful. but i think i'll switch to another rom. Thanks a lot for your help.

Just got myself a GN and I was a bit disappointed with the dialer.
With my old phone I could just spelling the name of a contact and the dialer would list contacts.
GN just puts in the numbers no direct search ??
Is it some option or something I am missing or do I need another dialer??
Love the feel of it just wish I did not have to go to contacts to find a number...
The stock dialer does not support T9 Smart dial. Either use another dialer, or use the google search bar to search for the contact you want to call.
Or spend a minute amount effort and tap the search icon in the bottom left of the dialer then start typing the name. It's not really much time wasted...

I also wish the T9 dialer was built into stock Android as it is with HTC Sense, Touchwiz and MIUI.
If you would like Google to change this, star the following threads in the Android issue tracker:

http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars

While it may not be much more effort, it is quite clear that this feature is available in other stock dialers, then why not in google's own?
I also store my contacts on the sim card and if anyone has noticed, then you cannot import all contacts into phone at once. You have to manually go through all contacts which again is a sore point.
I think that is a valid point to expect in the dialer, not whether searching seperately is an option or not!

Why not synchronise your contacts with google, so if you:
1. lose your phone.
2. Phone gets broken
3. Somebody steals it
it only takes 2 minutes before you have all your contacts again.
There are a lot of Contacts apps around on the market, and i bet even 1 of them supports transferring your sim contacts to the phone.
Earlier i used GO Contacts, but they don't support ICS yet. So for now im using DW Contacts (looks ok, only used it for an hour though).

Yes and accepted, but that behaviour has been standard all along. Rather than make me select one contact at a time from my hundred contacts, that one simple click would have been better. Anyways I prefer not to upload contacts into the cloud because
1. I may not have the consent of some of the ppl that I hold details for, e.g. bosses and they may not prefer it and
2. I personally do not know who or how this data is used/accessed in which case I would rather not. And personally judging by Google's appetite for gathering our personal data, I would rather opt out. Its just me....
Sorry OP to have hijacked your thread..
Correction - User error Apologies, I have just read the manual and it does allow for an 'import all' option to copy all contacts from SIM to phone.
To bad wish they would put that in its a very nice feature I seen no reason to be left out.
Anyone know a good dialer to use instead ?? Would love one with the same look if possible ???
Perhaps it is some sort of lawsuit infringement that prohibits them to build it into the dialer. I don't think Apple has this either, right? Maybe Microsoft has the patent on it.
3rd party dialers have this feature. In fact, I just install the MIUI dialer because it is just awesome. It is in the market and not listed under "MIUI Dialer" but "e9" or something. It works great.

I know from gingerbread that 3rd party apps can't clear unanswered calls. Some if the apps solves that by using the stock dialer list when selecting the notification.
Anyway its limitations in the OS and not the apps.

Hi,
I can search in contacts app using the name of the contact. It works.
When I search for a number, search returns empty.
Say, if I have a contact ABCDE with number 333 444 6677
When I search for CDE, app will display contact ABCDE. When I search for 444, it doesn't list the contact.
I am coming from Samsung S5 and I could search contact using name or number.
Thanks for your help.

Type the number starting with the zip code. That's how the stock Google app searches numbers.

It is kind of annoying. I enter +1 for all my US numbers and I have to enter +1 when I search for them in Hangouts and in Contact app.
Phone app does partial incremental match though, from the Dialpad, but not the contacts search.

Thanks. I am able to search from dial pad.
I am actually looking to find all contacts which has the search number anywhere in the phone number. Like I mentioned in OP where 444 is in middle of the phone number. Google being a search company, this should have been basic feature

Right, I understand what you want to do. I was pointing out it could be done from the dialpad, which presumably has access to the same list of numbers as the contact app.
I'm sure there is some regular expression like area of code that tells the app whether to match starting at beginning of phone # field or anywhere in the phone # field so I think it would be trivial for them to modify the behavior, probably just a few character change in the regular expression.
I was also agreeing that searching numbers from the beginning of phone # field is even more annoying if you are in the habit of entering + and country code (so the same phone # works even if you are overseas) because +1 is even less natural to enter on a search when 90% of one's contact list has +1.
So my solution is to just search from dialpad.
Also, for me, if my contact's name is JohnABCDE Smith, I actually need to enter Jo... to find them in the contact app. I can't enter CDE like you seem to be able to.

Small correction. When I looked at it again, I see what you said is correct. My search string should be first characters of first or last or middle name.
