This is really starting to aggravate me.
One being that we don't have Froyo yet and I can't install a bunch of apps all of sudden cause they're 2.2 only.
Two and most important is that devs are making 2.2 apps only and not making them backwards compatible. Has Froyo changed from 2.1 that drastically that the apps can't handle both OS's?
If they use stuff that is only in froyo, then you can't use them.
Soon froyo will be out and there is jpk that working fine. So you have to flash utter or wait.
If you need it so bad for 2.1 then contact the developer and ask him. Maby give him some money for his time.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
What about those who are stuck with 2.1 for while, I know my options but it's not good business IMO. It would be reasonable for 1.x to be coded out but 2.1 is still very prevalent.
If it's a paid for app, I'm sure they'll try and cater for the market, especially when you're going to be paying for the app. If it's a free app, then you'll have to pay them for their time to make it backwards compatible.
They're just future proofing. Instead of writing something for 2.1, they're going to write it in 2.2 and won't have to update it for another year or so.
Well its up to the developer.
I understand why they don't want to support older firmware, when they do stuff for the new one.
Have you paid for the app?

I posted this up just for a general discussion, I can't even see 2.2 only apps in my market but I have run into a bunch that I would like to buy but can't for obvious reasons. The question is what's going to happen when 2.2.1 comes out, or 2.3 etc. It took a while for the appstore to adapt to backwards comp and it's even more important now that iOS 4 can't be installed on older devices. Hopefully those with not so well supported phones won't suffer. It will be always be a small market that's negatively effected but I think for the over all health of the market it would be nice if some effort was given to backwards comp.
I agree dotty, for a free app you can't expect the dev to put in countless hours for nothing in return, then again, ads do make $$ as well.
I know nothing of how different 2.2 is under the hood and I guess this may be the underlying cause.
Well i think it's still up to the developer. If you want the program in a different firmware i guess he will make it if you pay him for the work.

I saw a bunch of news articles about it, but dont see any way to enable it in android 2.2

That was the first one I remember reading. Am I reading it wrong?
From what I understood, those demonstrations were of tech that's to be in Gingerbread, or just flat-out hasn't been released yet. Don't hold your breath waiting...
I still think it's crap how google got everyone so excited with all the cloud features for froyo(like OTA app sideloading) then didn't really deploy them...
They didnt mention gingerbread. And they demonstraited it on a n1 which doesnt have the hardware for gingerbread. Im pissed this feature hasnt been added.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I think there is a lot of this in the framework for FroYo, but what they showed were more demo level, and they are going to let developers implement these things.
Kinda like the HDMI port on the EVO, the API is there, developers just need to use it.
Buy J. River Media Center and install their free Gizmo Android app. Music streaming and more to your phone.
to the OP or others that said they are pissed... you may be pissed now but i assure you after reading a few things, the future is looking bright!!!!! as f*ck!!!!
I blv google has come to the realization that it cannot fully compete with iphone smart(coughdumbcough)phones as well as microsoft smartphones for the simple fact their proprietary music software pwns all just about in respects to itunes and zune... however with google's purchase of simplifymedia and the already implemented cloud servers... its no doubt in my mind in short time we will rule. Hell Apple aint dumb, Itunes will see cloud computing too.
In the meantime... you all should look into either mspot (music only) or zumodrive (media video included). Its basically an alternative (IMHO) until google gets its service up and running. It syncs the music on your computer to the cloud and lets you access it from within your android app. Damn near instant with cloud computing
did i mention how much i love clouds?

What makes you think it doesn't have the hardware? 1Ghz CPU, 512MB of RAM are the only requirements for 3.0 that we've heard of, and the N1, EVO, DX, Incredible, and Desire all match those requirements.
I think screen size is also a requirement for gingerbread. At least 4" I believe.

3.5", not 4". N1 has 3.7".
I think most of those features are in Froyo, but there are still a lot of frameworks outside of the OS that need to be implemented. The Android Market is still being redesigned to work from the web. Froyo has the ability, as you can see with Chrome to Phone, but the web side of things isn't ready for the public yet. As for media, I think Froyo may have it, but Google is probably waiting for their music service to be ready (which is on its own timeline) before they launch the media features. Remember, they want to sell music through the Market in the near future, and the media features mostly have to do with that. It probably won't come until Gingerbread is released, but most likely 2.2+ can use these features when the "other half" is ready.
Patience is a virtue.
I really think the phone has unexplored potential and its puzzling to see it neglected. Im also wondering if there is a way to improve the standalone GPS performance on this rig.

We are at a freeze... Why do work on a soon to be outdated system when 2.2 its coming within the next month
What I suggest? I suggest emailing, calling, faxing, and whatever else to the main man HIMSELF...
ask Samsung if they can incorporate these features...
All of us have to do it though if we want anything done xP
I personally would want the ticker to lock itself when typing, because I constantly hit the weather icon xP

not that its the same as roms/kernels obviously...but i gave up updated the gb theme until 2.2 comes out

I'm busy with real life stuff, and among other things, and not everything is simple to do. My kernel source is on Github, feel free to download it and add in whatever you want. Submit a pull request and I'll add it into my tree then. https://github.com/imnuts
would it be correct to assume that once 2.2 comes out, more ROM's and whatnot will come out and developers will start working on this phone some more?

Yes and no. I doubt it will have the number of ROMs available that the Fascinate or most of the HTC phones have, but there will be more stuff going on. It's mostly pointless putting a ton of effort into Eclair stuff now when 2.1 is all but done, and the update is likely less than a month away.
^^^ this
but i think realistic expectations once froyo goes out is a clean/debloated rom with adryns tweaks, voodoo kernels from imnuts
and reboot options, a few themes, aosp lockscreen, remove clock from status bar mods, etc
Will the official update be an OTA update?
Yes, that's how Verizon rolls...
so...
its obvious now that samsung nor verizon have any interest in updating this phone. will people begin developing roms for it? or has everyone in fact returned or sold their phone. cause if so then why this phone listed on xda?
Verizon has not declared end of life on this phone. We will get the Froyo update and likely get Gingerbread as well.
Hey everyone!
I am formerly of the Windows Mobile camp and finally made the jump over to Android. My Droid Incredible 2 comes in [hopefully] by the end of this week. I've played with Android as a dual boot on my HTC Touch Pro2, but it certainly doesn't compare to the look and feel of a real Android device.
So, I have a few questions that have been burning in my mind, maybe some folks could help me out.
What are the different versions of Sense on HTC's Android devices? I hear good things about the newest version, but I am told that the DInc2 doesn't have the latest and greatest.
Does anyone playing with the leaked Gingerbread ROM know if the Sense version was updated at all, or are there hardware requirements stopping that from happening?
What is up with HTCSense.com, I hear the DInc2 won't be compatible with the site, any idea why? It seems like a really good value-added type of feature.
What are some of the benefits of the upgrade to Gingerbread?
Any good suggestions for managing notifications? My fiancee just got the DInc2 and she charges it in a different room. I like to use my phone as an alarm clock, but I noticed notifications going off all night on her phone. Any way to stop notifications between certain hours or even just toggle them on and off easily? Ideally I would like to automate this with a way to override sometimes.
Any general advice that folks have for the phone itself?
Thanks everyone, and sorry for the extremely noob questions.

Kind of like Timeriffic??
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alfray.timeriffic&feature=search_result
sense was not and will not be updated throughout the gingerbread roll out for the dinc2, probably any bugs or issues in the system will be addressed but i don't see them giving us a different version at all.
Thanks for the help folks!
Shush and Timeriffic seem like they might be what I am looking for. I'm not too hung up on Sense being an older version, I think what I was thinking of was when I heard HTCSense.com and its backup utility was said to be not compatible with the DInc2. From other things I have read, it appears that it will purposely never be compatible because of Verizon.
I'm also really really hoping this phone gets the ability to play Netflix Streaming. If the original Incredible can get it, I can't see why they can't find a way to make it compatible with the newer model.

So guys ... what do you think .... which is the best......
Old market is faster and not as crowded.
I reckon the new market will eventually come into its own for the newer generation of smart phones.
eventually................
Before, I could look at my applications/updates in one click from main interface. Now I need 2 screen taps: menus -- > My Applications
Also, from time to time, it reverts to another secondary account: even more taps as I need to change account
It s**ks really, I hate the new market
I think the new market really sucks.......so complicated.......so slow........so grey........
mmmmmmm........i don like it.........
today i encounterd a problem which is common with sgs and new market, that u cant download files over 30mb. that made me revert to old market and now everything works flawless. hate new market
I believe that most of the people hate the new market......
I agree with that. Although it's much better on more powerful phones (sgs2, touchpad) in my experience.
I also have that freaking annoying bug where it swaps to your other google account
New market is crap. Use it to download " OldMarket".
Older version. Loads a lot faster, and not as cluttered IMO...

Otherwise another OS war on Tech Sites

Ha Ha. I agree completely
Old market was way better.
Not a fan of those windows phone tiles alike. They never offer anything usefull anyway. Also find it much harder to actually find stuff if i'm going through categories (as opposed to using search directly).
Performance wise, ever since i installed cyanogen 7.1 stable(on a SGS), this improved to nearly lag-free (not including the time it takes to download images). Not sure if it's just cyanogen that's faster or if this is a modified market version, or something else. Used to be really terrible with other roms though.
Simplicity to use still speaks louder and is more than enough to make me want to go back to the "OldMarket".
I've tried both, and I definitely prefer the Old market.
The old market loads a lot quicker, and I've noticed that the new market sometimes hangs when trying to install apps via the phone.
Usually I do the same thing that mickeko does, I'll browse the Market on PC then download the apps to my phone via the PC. Still, its nice to have the best version of the market running on your phone (in my case 2.3.6).
tried both.....the old one is working and the new one is eye candy but extremely slooooooooooooooow
I notice that whenever I download a picture from Chrome, and then go to the Gallery, the picture will not show up. However, if I go into the file manager and move the picture to a different directory, it seems to move. It seems to me as if the Gallery is not updating it's database of pictures after Chrome downloads. Is this a normal issue on the GS4 or is this something particular only with my phone?
Keep in mind im un-rooted and on stock firmware

Hm, never heard of Tizen. However, "fully closed source OS" means its not Android. And i wont be using it lol. That is 99% of the reason i love android. Same reason i loved windows Mobile 6.5.x. I made custom ROMs for it, was able to change colors/etc via Registry edits, was easily able to write my own apps with C# (as i can do with android in Java) so a closed source OS will totally kill them. Granted, Samsung is a great company. They just better NOT get rid of Android all together. I have been diving into some of the securities with Android. And samsung is doing a great job keeping their stuff closed source by simply writing .c code and putting the compiled version into System/bin and have the system run its special code. So they are still staying closed source to a point
In their defense, i don't blame them. If i create something that is out of this world and beyond all others, i surely would want it to be copyrighted and unable to be repliated to other devices (IE Smart View, and the other things they made) I just fear everything will be "controlled" the US Government is already trying to overtake the internet and crap like that. Oh can't forget about the Verizon call info being shared with the Government. Bleh really strayed off there xD

Oh it is still android based as only the kernel needs to be open. here is a part of the info. They recently had a developers con for it
Presented originally as an open source operating system, Tizen 2 has a complicated licensing model. Its SDK is built on top of open source components[31] but the entire SDK has been published under a non-open-source Samsung license.[32]
The operating system itself consists of many open source components. A number of components internally developed by Samsung (e.g. boot animation, calendar, task manager, music player applications) are however released under the Flora License which is most likely incompatible with requirements of the Open Source Initiative. Therefore it is not known whether the native application framework and its graphical components can be legally utilized for Free and Open Source Software such as GPL applications.

Just take a look at their unrootable kernels, locked bootloaders, and lack of interest in working with the developers. They used the Devs to make them popular and now couldnt care less. I have a feeling Samsung will go the way of Nokia if they keep this up.

I noticed that the locked bootloaders and unrootable kernels were only carrier specific. I didnt have an unrootable kernel or a locked bootloader with my T-Mobile S4 variant but noticed other carriers had issues. Hmm. But yes if they keep it up i will not be buying any samsung device in the future. Im tryna make the S4 last me a good 3 - 4 years.
